Okay... we're going to do a little lesson in Greek for our SPIRITUAL SUNDAY episode. That's right! We're talking about a specific Greek word that's used in Ephesians 3 of the New Testament of the Bible. (It's also tattooed on my right arm!) The word is: perissou. Roughy translated... it means: "exceedingly abundantly." According to linguists and theologians... this word is a rare double compound that's not found in older Greek literature but is found in biblical writings, is an adverb... that means "exceedingly and very highly." Now... why does THIS word matter? Well... it's tucked into one of my favorite verses in the Bible... and it speaks to the AMAZING things that can happen in... through... with... and for us... when we start to realize how much God loves us! Here's the verse: Ephesians 3:14-21 14 For this reason I bend my knees before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, 16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled to all the fullness of God. 20 Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly (or exceedingly... abundantly) beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, 21 to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations [p]forever and ever. Amen. That's right. Did you catch it? The Bible is saying that when we realize how much God loves us (which the scripture also says it's too much for us to understand!)... THEN we can DO MORE than we could hope... dream... or imagine. EXCEEDINGLY... ABUNDANTLY... more. How cool is THAT? Meditate on THAT today. Just see where it takes you! Stay encouraged and we'll talk tomorrow. _______________ Be sure to hit me up with questions at www.encouragingtheencouragers.com and I'll answer them as we go! Roughy is one of the greats of our game and we are very excited to bring this conversation to the Men of Words community. In this conversation we talk about his career, challenges throughout and his very public battle with cancer. He can look back now on not only his career, but his health battles as well and appreciates the perspective he has gained from it all. He's got a great understanding and appreciation of Mental Health and is very proud of the work that St. Kilda are doing in that space. We love Roughy. We hope you enjoy this conversation. MOW.
Welcome to Season 2 of the Spot On podcast. In Season 1, we focused on the fundamentals of skin cancer, interviewing some of Australia's leading clinicians on the topic. In this season, we're focused more on the human side of a diagnosis. MSCAN is thrilled to have renowned journalist Deborah Knight involved and interviewing patients about their journey with skin cancer and the road ahead. In this episode you will hear from Jarryd Roughead who faced a diagnosis of advanced melanoma, and Dr Donna Milne from his treating team. Jarryd Roughead Jarryd is well recognised as an AFL superstar, and a very successful football career playing for Hawthorn. He's also overcome advanced melanoma. Jarryd was first diagnosed with a melanoma on his lip in 2015. The melanoma was removed, and life continued along well. During a routine check-up in 2016, a scan showed that the melanoma had moved to his lungs. Jarryd was treated with immunotherapy. Despite some challenging side effects, the treatment worked. Jarryd Roughead's journey of advanced melanoma is detailed in his book Roughy. Dr Donna Milne Donna is a registered nurse and has worked at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne since 2002. For the last 12 years Donna has worked as a clinical nurse consultant in the melanoma and skin service. More recently she has also taken on a nurse consultant team lead role and is part of the nursing leadership team at Peter Mac. Donna is also involved in national committees and advisory boards providing advice on patient resources, education for nurses and optimal care for patients with melanoma. Donna's PhD investigated the perceptions of palliative care services held by people with advanced cancer. Her other research interests include understanding the needs and experiences of patients with melanoma receiving targeted and immune therapies and their family members.
