Het conflict tussen Noord- en Zuid-Korea sleept al tachtig jaar voort. De dreiging voor Zuid-Koreanen is in al die tijd nooit verdwenen, ondanks de wapenstilstand. Zo werd in 2010 het eiland Yeonpyeong aangevallen door Noord-Korea, een aanval waarvan de aanleiding nooit officieel bekend werd. Toch gaan mensen in Seoul en andere delen van Zuid-Korea soms bijna lacherig om met de dreigingen uit het noorden, of die nu bestaan uit kernwapens of kruisraketten. Tegelijkertijd zijn de vormen van propaganda veranderd of verdwenen. De luidsprekers langs de grens zijn uitgezet en er worden minder Zuid-Koreaanse goederen de grens over gesmokkeld. Ook geven jongere Zuid-Koreanen steeds vaker aan dat zij geen hereniging met Noord-Korea meer willen, een standpunt dat de Noord-Koreaanse regering deelt met een deel van de bevolking in Zuid-Korea.
