Every time we go to Mass, we hear the words: “This is my body, given up for you.” But what does that mean for us—in our marriages, our families, and our daily choices?   In this powerful homily, given during Natural Family Planning Awareness Week and on World Day for Grandparents, we reflect on the bold witness of St. Pope Paul VI in Humanae Vitae, the beauty and challenge of living God's plan for love, and how surrendering our bodies in love—whether in parenting, grandparenting, marriage, or spiritual sacrifice—mirrors Christ's gift to us in the Eucharist.   We also explore: Why the Church continues to teach openness to life The pain and witness of infertility How grandparents (like Saints Joachim and Anne) shape the faith of future generations Why “witnesses” are more powerful than words   Whether you're a parent, grandparent, single, married, or longing for children, this message reminds us all: we are called to give ourselves in love, just as Jesus gave Himself for us.

Gospel Matthew 13:24-30 Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. “The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?' He answered, ‘An enemy has done this.' His slaves said to him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?' He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”'” Reflection Many of us have paused and questioned why? Why is there evil in the world? It's because it's God's plan. And what we realize is that the work that we have is a way of exposing illusions, the half truths, the lies in evil. And we have to grow together with those that are evil. And one of the things, that seems to me, this reading is so clearly trying to say is everything ultimately will be exposed. That which produces good, abundant fruit and heals and helps and feeds people will be shown. And those who have not produced anything of any worth for anyone else will be shown, and they will be destroyed. And those who gave life to others will flourish. Closing Prayer Father, at times we can become impatient and worried and afraid when we see evil all around us. People lying. People not being who they claim to be. Keep us from fear when that happens, because what's happening is evil is being exposed, which is a way in which it is destroyed. Help us to trust in your power. It always overcomes evil. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Friends of the Rosary,Today, July 26, is the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the grandparents of Jesus, and the patron saints of all grandparents. They played an important part in the work of the Redemption. In their home, the Virgin Mary was educated to be the Mother of God. The Scripture is silent about the grandparents of Jesus. The Protoevanglium of James (c. 150) relates the story of Anne and Joachim, who were cured of their infertility with the gift of the child Mary.Joachim was a prominent and respected man who had no children, and he and his wife, Anne, looked upon this as a punishment from God. In answer to their prayers, Mary was born and was dedicated to God at a very early age. The Veneration of Anne and Joachim in the East dates from the 7th century. From the Middle Ages, numerous churches, chapels, and confraternities were dedicated to St. Anne. In the West, Anne became popular in the Middle Ages, invoked by infertile couples and women in childbirth.Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Offer to God praise as your sacrifice and fulfill your vows to the Most High; Then call upon me in time of distress; I will rescue you, and you shall glorify me. Offer to God a sacrifice of praise.A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Mt 13:24-30, today's readings)."He replied, ‘No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, “First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn.”'”Jesus speaks to the crowds in a parable about a sower who sows good seed. The seed sprouts and grows, but an enemy of the sower comes at night to sow weeds throughout the wheat. When the slaves of the sower ask if they should pull up the weeds, he tells them to let the wheat and the weeds grow together and at the harvest separate them. They will then gather the wheat into the barn, but the weeds they will tie up and burn. At the harvest, the final judgment, Jesus will come to separate the weeds from the wheat. The Gospel acclamation reminds us to receive the word of God and realize the kingdom of heaven now and eternally for the life of the world to come: "Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you and is able to save your souls."Father in heaven, help me today see the the kingdom of heaven already here and yet to be. Like a planted seed, the word has in it challenges to life along with the potential for life brought to fulfillment at the time of harvest. Give me the grace to live the present moment with enthusiasm and in hope of the fulfillment of the word in the eternal kingdom yet to be. In a world where good and evil coexist, help me, Lord, hold onto the hope of the ultimate triumph of your kingdom in its fullness through Jesus Christ, your Son. Saints Joachim and Anne, pray for us!Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Delivered by Elyanne from the Parish of Saint James in the Diocese of Surabaya, Indonesia. Sirach 44: 10-15; Rs psalm 132: 11.13-14.17-18; Matthew 13: 16-17.LONGING TO SEE GOD The title for our meditation today is:Longing to See God. A long history of salvation illustrates the life and growthof the faith of those called to fulfill the will of God. Their communicationand relationship with God were manifested in the covenant that God would revealHimself as the savior of mankind. God always spoke and promised, for example toAbraham, Noah, kings and prophets, but He did not show up as a human being thatthey could meet face to face. A communication or relationship thatstill exists as a promise always gives us the consequence to wait for itsrealization. This is true with all the stories in the old testament. All thosewho accepted the promise and understood it very well can only hope in faiththat the promise of the coming of the Messiah, the awaited messenger of Godcould be realized. They all had the desire to see God. Their longing was notsomething empty but a real one, because God Himself already spoke about that, divine miracles and many other signs had really strengthened their faith in thecoming of the One sent from Heaven. But until they all died and left thisworld their dreams and wishes had not been realized. This illustration can helpus to reflect about this. There were two grandparents did not see one of theirgrandchildren to become a priest and if possible a bishop. They did not seewhat they had dreamt of. They had already died when one of their grandchildrenafter following all his formation proceses then to be ordained as a priest. This situation is similar to the people in the old testament. About these people, there are someexceptions. The scriptures only record a number of persons who did not directlyexperience the coming of the Messiah into the world. The parents of John theBaptist, Zakaria and Elisabeth should belong to this category. This includesalso the parents of Our Lady, Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, whose feast day wecelebrate today. This couple and grandparents were certainly very happy andproud because the Son of God who was born as Jesus Christ, is from the womb ofMary, their own daughter. When Jesus says, "Many prophetsand righteous people want to see what you see", He actually points this toSaints Joachim and Anne, and all other people including us, who see andexperience the incarnated God in this world. Jesus wants to say that by seeingand experiencing Himself in a real and personal way, this makes us a people sospecial and blessed. Therefore, we must be always grateful and happy. Let's pray. In the name of theFather ... O Lord Jesus, may through the intercession of Saints Joachim andAnne, we will remain faithful to You in all our lives. Glory to the Father andto the Son and to the Holy Spirit ... In the name of the Father ...

Saints Joachim & Anna lived their entire adult life bearing the shame of barrenness as they could not conceive a child. Daily they asked God to grant them mercy by providing them a child. God gave them beyond what they could ever ask or imagine. He not only gave them a child, but their child would be the Mother of Christ our God. They were given mercy beyond all hope as St. Anna became pregnant at such an old age. We are all given mercy and being granted salvation beyond all hope.

Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lectionary: 399The Saint of the day is Saints Joachim and AnneSaints Joachim and Anne’s Story In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Not only is his mother's family neglected, we also know nothing factual about them except that they existed. Even the names “Joachim” and “Anne” come from a legendary source written more than a century after Jesus died. The heroism and holiness of these people however, is inferred from the whole family atmosphere around Mary in the Scriptures. Whether we rely on the legends about Mary's childhood or make guesses from the information in the Bible, we see in her a fulfillment of many generations of prayerful persons, herself steeped in the religious traditions of her people. The strong character of Mary in making decisions, her continuous practice of prayer, her devotion to the laws of her faith, her steadiness at moments of crisis, and her devotion to her relatives—all indicate a close-knit, loving family that looked forward to the next generation even while retaining the best of the past. Joachim and Anne—whether these are their real names or not—represent that entire quiet series of generations who faithfully perform their duties, practice their faith, and establish an atmosphere for the coming of the Messiah, but remain obscure. Reflection This is the “feast of grandparents.” It reminds grandparents of their responsibility to establish a tone for generations to come: They must make the traditions live and offer them as a promise to little children. But the feast has a message for the younger generation as well. It reminds the young that older people's greater perspective, depth of experience, and appreciation of life's profound rhythms are all part of a wisdom not to be taken lightly or ignored. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. Gospel Matthew 13:18-23 Jesus said to his disciples: “Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.” Reflection We learn something about human nature here, that the work of becoming who God calls us to be, to be authentic, to be who we really are, is not an easy thing. And It takes work and takes time. But it seems that if we believe it, if we believe that the things he's asking us to do or to understand, if we know that that's true, then there's going to be a capacity to do this work of receiving the truth in a way that will not be destroyed by our human weaknesses. Jesus said, it's the one who hears the word and understands it. That's the key. Closing Prayer Father, you reveal yourself as a God that is a Trinity. God the father, the creator. God the son, the Redeemer. Then you have this mysterious Holy Spirit, which is the one who is there with you to help you understand, to help you to see. That's the purpose of the Holy Spirit, to be that catalyst in us that opens our eyes to see what is true. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. Friends of the Rosary, Today, July 26th, is the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus. The couple's faith and perseverance brought them from the sorrow of childlessness to the joy of conceiving and raising the immaculate and sinless woman who would give birth to Christ. Joachim, a wealthy member of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, and his wife Anne were deeply grieved by their childlessness. They regarded it as a surpassing misfortune and a sign of shame among the tribes of Israel. Joachim and Anne began to devote themselves to rigorous prayer and fasting in isolation from one another and society. An angel would later reveal this to Anne: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be spoken of in all the world.” Joachim and Anne decided that Mary would be offered to God as a consecrated Virgin and enter a chaste marriage with the carpenter Joseph. The Catholic Church invokes this saintly couple as the patron of grandparents and a model of Christian marriage. Our devotion to Anne and Joachim reflects our affection toward the Blessed Mother. Known and Unknown Saints: Sunday of All Saints 2024

Sermons from St. Sophia, Bellingham, Washington

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 30, 2024 14:30

The Sunday following Pentecost is dedicated to All Saints, both those who are known to us, and those who are known only to God. There have been saints at all times, and they have come from every corner of the earth. They were Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets, Hierarchs, Monastics, and Righteous, yet all were perfected by the same Holy Spirit. The Descent of the Holy Spirit makes it possible for us to rise above our fallen state and to attain sainthood, thereby fulfilling God's directive to “be holy, for I am holy” (Lev. 11:44, 1 Peter 1:16, etc.). Therefore, it is fitting to commemorate All Saints on the first Sunday after Pentecost. This feast may have originated at an early date, perhaps as a celebration of all martyrs, then it was broadened to include all men and women who had borne witness to Christ by their virtuous lives, even if they did not shed their blood for Him. Saint Peter of Damascus, in his “Fourth Stage of Contemplation,” mentions five categories of saints: Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets, Hierarchs, and Monastic Saints (Philokalia [in English] Vol. 3, p.131). He is actually quoting from the Octoechos, Tone 2 for Saturday Matins, kathisma after the first stichology. Saint Νikόdēmos of the Holy Mountain (July 14) adds the Righteous to Saint Peter's five categories. The list of Saint Νikόdēmos is found in his book The Fourteen Epistles of Saint Paul (Venice, 1819, p. 384) in his discussion of I Corinthians 12:28. The hymnology for the feast of All Saints also lists six categories: “Rejoice, assembly of the Apostles, Prophets of the Lord, loyal choirs of the Martyrs, divine Hierarchs, Monastic Fathers, and the Righteous....” Some of the saints are described as Confessors, a category which does not appear in the above lists. Since they are similar in spirit to the martyrs, they are regarded as belonging to the category of Martyrs. They were not put to death as the Martyrs were, but they boldly confessed Christ and came close to being executed for their faith. Saint Maximus the Confessor (January 21) is such a saint. The order of these six types of saints seems to be based on their importance to the Church. The Apostles are listed first, because they were the first to spread the Gospel throughout the world. The Martyrs come next because of their example of courage in professing their faith before the enemies and persecutors of the Church, which encouraged other Christians to remain faithful to Christ even unto death. Although they come first chronologically, the Prophets are listed after the Apostles and Martyrs. This is because the Old Testament Prophets saw only the shadows of things to come, whereas the Apostles and Martyrs experienced them firsthand. The New Testament also takes precedence over the Old Testament. The holy Hierarchs comprise the fourth category. They are the leaders of their flocks, teaching them by their word and their example. The Monastic Saints are those who withdrew from this world to live in monasteries, or in seclusion. They did not do this out of hatred for the world, but in order to devote themselves to unceasing prayer, and to do battle against the power of the demons. Although some people erroneously believe that monks and nuns are useless and unproductive, Saint John Climacus had a high regard for them: “Angels are a light for monks, and the monastic life is a light for all men” (LADDER, Step 26:31). The last category, the Righteous, are those who attained holiness of life while living “in the world.” Examples include Abraham and his wife Sarah, Job, Saints Joachim and Anna, Saint Joseph the Betrothed, Saint Juliana of Lazarevo, and others.

Even as we remember the birth of our Lord's Mother, as with any remembrances of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we see something so wondrous and joyful about Christ's salvation of our souls. Saints Joachim & Anna lived in the shame of barrenness, even to an old age. After pleading a lifetime with God for mercy and for their shame to be taken away by the conception of a child, our Lord goes beyond their request. He grants them a child; a daughter who was chosen before time to bring forth for the salvation of the world the Son of God. The Blessed Virgin's parents' barrenness was made fruitful. Today we rejoice that the barrenness of our soul has been made fruitful. We were once devoid of true life, but Life Himself has been poured into our barren souls and now our souls can be fruitful bringing His salvation to the souls around us.

Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Mt 13:1-9 - On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And He spoke to them at length in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear." Full Text of ReadingsMemorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, Parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary Lectionary: 397The Saint of the day is Saints Joachim and AnneSaints Joachim and Anne’s Story In the Scriptures, Matthew and Luke furnish a legal family history of Jesus, tracing ancestry to show that Jesus is the culmination of great promises. Friends of the Rosary: Today, July 26th, is the Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and also the grandparents of Jesus. In the home of Joachim and Anne the Virgin Mary was educated to be the Mother of God. Joachim was a prominent and respected man who had no children, and he and his wife, Anne, looked upon this as a punishment from God. In answer to their prayers, Mary was born and was dedicated to God at a very early age. Our devotion to Anne and Joachim is an extension of our affection toward our Blessed Mother. The couple early became models of Christian marriage. We, too, owe a debt of gratitude to our parents for their help in our Christian formation — as long as they are able to transmit the faith! The Church invokes this saintly couple as the patron of grandparents. Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Sts. Joachim and Anne, Pray for Us!
