Gaza has an incredibly young population, with pre-war estimates suggesting around half of those living in the territory are under 18, according to health ministry figures. When the conflict began in October 2023, Israeli authorities told civilians to move to a 'humanitarian zone' to ensure their safety. But, BBC analysis shows that this area was targeted almost 100 times in an eight-month period last year - the Israel Defence Forces say Hamas fighters were operating there. Now, a new BBC documentary filmed in the zone shows what civilian life in the midst of war is really like, as three children fight to survive.Jonny Dymond is joined by Jamie Roberts, a co-director of the film. He introduces us to Zakaria, an 11-year-old living alone at one of Gaza's few functioning hospitals, al-Aqsa.

Dr. Lara Zakaria is an integrative pharmacist, nutritionist, professor, and public health professional specializing in Functional Medicine. A graduate of the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, at Rutgers University, she spent 20 years in community pharmacy practice. After developing an interest in nutrition, she earned a MS in Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and subsequently qualified as a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) as well as an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner (IFMCP). Lara currently practices as part of a multi-disciplinary Functional Medicine practice and supervises a professional mentorship program for nutrition and FxMed. Lara is passionate about prevention and reversal of metabolic and autoimmune disease and working with pharmacy professionals to leverage their unique expertise in medication management, drug-drug/drug-nutrient interactions, and genomics to optimize patient medical and nutritional programs. Together Lara and I discuss the role of the independent pharmacist; drug nutrient interactions and depletions; and Lara's passion about the prevention and reversal of metabolic allergic and autoimmune disease as well as her passion for teaching about the practical application of nutrition and supplements into community pharmacy practice. We explore ideas for providing foundational support for patients, including personalization offerings and consultations; the critical need to evolve and change the way that pharmacy is done while still meeting the needs of patients; and the impressive herbal medicine research findings from a global, cultural and historical perspective that support the work of both pharmacists and functional medicine nutritionists. I'm your host, Evelyne Lambrecht, thank you for designing a well world with us. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent reporting from the West Bank. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Day 1 of the DNC (and the protests it was met with), Blinken's pseudo-ceasefire, Dems' economic agenda, Elon's Twitter flop, the legal woes of Bob Menendez and George Santos, and Mexico's judiciary, before parsing through Shawn Fain's fantastic performance at the DNC, and the stark differences between AOC's disappointing “reference” to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, and Warnock's willingness to call out (even with both-sidesism) the mass deaths. Jasper Nathaniel then joins, diving right into how the complete appropriation of the Genocide in Gaza for domestic culture war purposes in the US pushed him to go to the West Bank for a more grounded approach to covering this one-sided conflict, tackling his level of understanding about Israeli apartheid and settler violence before his arrival, and how that was sharply upended when he was met with a constant and totalistic pervasion of cruelty and terror, be it from soldier or settler, enacted upon the Palestinian populations in the West Bank. Expanding on this, Nathaniel contextualizes his time in Masafer Yatta within the villages' history as a supposed “military training zone,” something Israel enacted in the 1980s with the explicit intention to eventually claim said land themselves, something they advanced with decades of allowing settler gangs to roam uninhibited by law and unaccountable for their violence, culminating in Netanyahu's recent decision to completely hand over West Bank rule to settler rule under Smotrich. Next, Jasper walks Sam and Emma through a devastating, first-hand recounting of the violence he witnessed in Masafer Yatta, with a settler's shooting of unarmed teenager Zakaria al-Adra, and the active obstruction and inaction from the Israeli regime in charge of holding said settler accountable, before wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the pervasiveness and extremity of the settler terror regime. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through some more highlights from Night 1 of the DNC, including Gov. Hochul's tough crowd work, the stronger elements of AOC's speech (and what it tells us about her future), and the importance of Biden acknowledging his ideological break with the Dem's neoliberal ideology. John from San Antonio dives into the biggest obstacles to a Harris presidency, and Charlie Kirk gets schooled by the very demographic he's supposed to appeal to. Lucas from Delaware on platforming Lina Khan, Drew from Wisconsin on Harris' LGBTQ+ policy, and Mike from Vancouver on Harris' theoretical support for UNRWA. Sizable electorates around the world are flocking to populist candidates who promise power, domination and a return to better times. The global experiment in liberalism seems to be suffering a setback. In his latest book, “Age of Revolution,” journalist Fareed Zakaria teases apart the foreign policy decisions that got us to this point. Several U.S. missteps, such as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the 2008 financial crisis, eroded trust in the vision of the American project, he says. And growing individual liberty and choice sparked a backlash among those mourning a cohesion they believe their society used to enjoy. New York Times columnist David Brooks, interviews Zakaria and takes questions from the audience. aspenideas.org
In the wake of the deadly Bhola Cyclone, 50 million Pakistanis go to the polls on December 7th, 1970 and cast their votes in a national election, which yields unexpected and destabilizing results. As the emergent factions fight for control of Pakistan's nascent democracy, the political process slowly disintegrates and the gulf between East and West Pakistan becomes irreconcilable. Author and journalist Fareed Zakaria joins Margaret Hoover to talk about his recent book, “Age of Revolutions,” and how past periods of progress and backlash inform our present revolutionary moment. Zakaria, host of CNN's “Fareed Zakaria GPS,” reflects on a full-blown cultural backlash against decades of social and political change that has fueled the rise of Donald Trump. He also discusses the next industrial revolution driven by artificial intelligence and the progress and disruption it may cause. Zakaria comments on the challenge President Biden faces addressing the crisis at the southern border. He also addresses campus protests over Israel's actions in Gaza and what he sees as the failure of Biden's efforts to influence Israeli policy. Assessing America's place in a changing world, Zakaria makes an argument for aggressive U.S. support for Ukraine and voices concern about the impact of emerging Republican isolationism in a second Trump presidency. He discusses the race between Trump and Biden, the prospect of a historic political realignment, and the parallels between 1968 and 2024. (NOTE: This interview was recorded on May 1, prior to the announcement that the U.S. has put arms shipments to Israel on hold out of concern that American weapons would be used in an assault on the city of Rafah.) What can we learn about the polarized and unstable world in which we live by exploring the revolutions―past and present―that define our age? Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, war, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk―the early decades of the 21st century might be one of the most revolutionary periods in modern history. But it is not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What are these revolutions, and how can they help us to understand our fraught world? CNN host and bestselling author Fareed Zakaria has investigated the eras and movements that have shaken norms while shaping the modern world. He says three such periods hold profound lessons for today. First, in the 17th-century Netherlands, a fascinating series of transformations made that tiny land the richest in the world―and created politics as we know it today. Next, the French Revolution, an explosive era that devoured its ideological children and left a bloody legacy that haunts us today. Finally, the mother of all revolutions, the Industrial Revolution, which catapulted Great Britain and the United States to global dominance and created the modern world. Zakaria, author of the new book Age of Revolutions: Progress and Backlash from 1600 to the Present, probes four present-day revolutions: globalization, technology, identity, and geopolitics. For all their benefits, the globalization and technology revolutions have produced profound disruptions and pervasive anxiety and our identity. And increasingly, identity is the battlefield on which the 21st century's polarized politics are fought. All this is set against a geopolitical revolution as great as the one that catapulted the United States to world power in the late nineteenth century. Now we are entering a world in which the United States is no longer the dominant power. As they find themselves at the nexus of four seismic revolutions, people can easily imagine a dark future. But Zakaria says pessimism is premature. If we act wisely, he says, the liberal international order can be revived, and populism relegated to the ash heap of history. As few public intellectuals can, Zakaria combines intellectual range, deep historical insight, and uncanny prescience to once again reframe and illuminate our turbulent present. Join Jim and Greg for a few quick thoughts on the solar eclipse and then martinis covering the Middle East, the hidden truth inside the March jobs report, and a senator trying to push a Supreme Court justice into retirement.First, they applaud former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett for fending off the biased questions of CNN's Fareed Zakaria and repeatedly echoing his political rival, current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in saying that Israel must destroy Hamas once and for all.Next, they shudder at the truth behind the supposedly good March jobs report - that virtually all of the jobs created last month were part-time positions. They discuss what this means and why it explains Americans' disgust with Biden over the economy despite good unemployment numbers. Finally, they get a kick out of Connecticut Sen.
