On August 26 2017 two kayakers on the Red river in North Dakota, came across a body wrapped in plastic and duct tape hung up on a log around 545pm. It was later determined to be 22 year old Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind. A native woman who was reported missing on August 19. A couple was arrested earlier that week on suspicion of conspiracy to commit kidnapping. They were also in possession of a newborn child that the police believed was Greywind's. Join us today in this horrific true crime edition of Nightmares of the Americas. Our women, girls, and two-spirts are being taken from us in an alarming way.  As of 2016, the National Crime Information Center has reported 5,712 cases of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls. Strikingly, the U.S Department of Justice missing persons database has only reported 116 cases.  The majority of these murders are committed by non-Native people on Native-owned land. The lack of communication combined with jurisdictional issues between state, local, federal, and tribal law enforcement, make it nearly impossible to begin the investigative process. According to some tribes, red is the only color the spirits can see.  By wearing red, it is everyone's hope that we can call back the missing spirits of our Indigenous sisters and daughters and lay them to rest. For more information on the MMIW movement follow the link belowhttps://www.nativewomenswilderness.org/mmiw Merch store- https://indigenoustales.threadless.com/Email us at info@behillnetwork.com Also check out our Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/indigenous_tales/And our TikTok -https://www.tiktok.com/@indigenous_talesAmanda Bland Dallas area Bakeryinstagram - https://www.instagram.com/cupidsweetsbakes/Cupid Sweets- https://www.facebook.com/cupidsweets

Sometimes a crime so heinous occurs, it is hard to wrap your mind around how any human can be so evil, especially towards the most vulnerable.   In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast we discuss the murders of Ashley Bush and Savanna Greywind for their unborn babies. TW – child murder, pregnancy loss. In October 2022, Ashley Bush was struggling with her latest pregnancy.  She had three other children and her partner was unable to work.  She was asking on social media for help with baby supplies and was looking to find work that she could do to earn some extra money.    Ashley crossed paths online with ‘Lucy Barrows' and that was the beginning of the end.  Ashley met with Lucy (real name Amber Waterman) and lost her life.  Amber tried to pass of Ashley's baby as her own, even going as far as to stuff Ashley's placenta in her underwear.  The baby did not survive the ordeal and before Amber's diabolical lie was uncovered, she actually held a funeral for Ashley's baby, passing the child off as her own daughter. Savanna Greywind was 8 months pregnant when she agreed to help a neighbor, Brooke Crews, with a sewing project.  What actually happened when she arrived at Brooke's apartment is unclear due to differing versions of events, but Savanna lost her life.  Her baby was brutally cut from her womb, but thankfully survived.  Brooke and her partner William managed to hide the evidence of their crime, as well as the baby from police for days before their horrific crime was uncovered.  Savanna's daughter Haisley is now a thriving five-year-old, in the care of her loving father. Savanna Lafontaine-Greywind had no reason to suspect her neighbor, Brooke Crews, was up to something. Brooke claimed she just needed a quick favor. Would Savanna come upstairs and try on a dress she'd been making? Savanna was eight months pregnant and about to sit down to dinner, but she told Brooke she'd help her out. It was the last thing she ever did. Then Kristin tells us a story that illustrates the dangers of becoming a confidential informant. When police discovered marijuana and ecstasy in 23-year-old Rachel Hoffman's apartment, they leveled with her. She could go to prison for up to four years. Or she could become a confidential informant. Rachel chose the latter and soon found herself at the center of a very dangerous drug bust. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. On August 19th 2017, 22-year-old Savanna Greywind, of the Spirit Lake Tribe, who was eight months pregnant with her first child at the time, decided to visit a neighbour who lived in an apartment upstairs for a dress fitting when something truly horrific happened. Her neighbour, Brooke Crews and her husband, William Hoehn, murdered Savanna in cold blood, ripping her unborn baby from her womb and deciding to keep the healthy baby girl as their own. Eight days later, Savanna's body would be found in the Red River, North Dakota, her body wrapped in plastic and duct tape, signs of strangulation present on her neck and her womb sliced open. Crews and Hoehn were quickly established as the last people to see Savanna alive, and fell under the direct veil of suspicion by police and Greywind's family. Despite various searches of their apartment turning up nothing of significance, an anonymous tip led to the discovery of Savanna's baby girl in Brooke and William's apartment, thankfully alive and well. Following Savanna's murder, Savanna's Act was passed in 2021 which will allow Native Americans and tribal communities better access to federal crime information as well as creating a standardised protocol for how the police and other investigative forces should handle missing and murdered Native American women and their cases in an effort to prevent this from happening again and to help crack down on the high number of missing indigenous women cases across the nation. Homicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for indigenous women, along with many other alarming statistics. Today we tell you about two women's homicide stories. Because of those cases, laws were put in place to start heading in the right direction of recognizing these issues and stepping into a future of bringing more attention to the cases of all Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women. After sharing their tragic tales, we spotlight a girl who is missing right now (September 2021). This young woman has received almost zero media attention, Kiana Klomp.  Social: TikTok: @truecrimeexposedpodcast  Instagram: @truecrimeexpod Twitter: @truecrime_pod Sources: https://www.talkmurderwithme.com/blog/2020/4/20/savanna-greywind https://people.com/crime/savanna-greywind-baby-cut-out-box-cutter/ https://www.distractify.com/p/what-happened-to-hanna-harris Organizations: https://mmiwusa.org https://www.nativewomenswilderness.org

A few months back, we covered the 2004 case of Lisa Marie Montgomery--a woman who murdered Bobbie Jo Stinnet as she brutally cut open Bobbie Jo's abdomen to take her unborn baby. This case made national headlines, and in 2021, Lisa Marie became the first woman to be executed by the federal government in decades. Our case this week follows a similar trajectory. A 22 year old pregnant woman was lured into a neighbor's apartment, only to be attacked, killed, and had her unborn baby stolen from her womb. It’s MMD’s third Thanksgiving episode, and it’s about time we look at the forgotten half of the holiday’s equation: America’s indigenous people. It’s heartbreaking, but true that Native Americans - Native American women in particular - are at a higher risk for violent crime, especially violent crime at the hands of people outside of their ethnic group, and this week’s episode explores two of those stories. Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind and Hanna Harris were two young mothers taken away before their time, and this week’s episode explores their stories.
