Show Notes:This audio excerpt from Turn Left at the Cactus/Cactus Call introduces Cari Shaw, who is organizing the dogfood drive called "250 for the 250" to benefit the San Felipe Dog Rescue, coinciding with the SCORE Baja 250 off-road race. Cari, with help from volunteer, Barbara Fenski, and others in the area are seeking donations of 250 bags of dog food to help the overpopulated dog rescue, especially during puppy season and the summer months when donations typically decrease. They have established multiple drop-off locations, including the San Felipe Brewing Company, downtown at Fat Boys, andthe San Felipe Dog Rescue facility itself, and encourage both racers and the general public to contribute, noting that beef, lamb, or salmon-based food is preferred due to border restrictions on chicken. Beyond food, the rescue alsoneeds volunteers, fosters, and help with constructing new facilities as well as bedding, doggie essentials, kiddie pools (for summer heat), and monetary donations.Drop-off locations for dog food include:The SF BreweryFat Boys PizzaSan Felipe Dog RescueLink to SF Dog Rescue:https://sanfelipedogrescue.org/KEY POINTS:• Cari's 2nd-year aiding dog rescues• Over 110 dogs, half are puppies• 250 bags of dog food goal• Volunteer & construction of facility extension needed • Ongoing support needed year-roundApologies for the quality of the phone conversations. Off-roading has been part of Jennifer Morton's life since childhood and has been built into her DNA for generations. Not only is Jen a beloved wife and mother, but she's also a (badass!) off-road dirt bike racer in the 1600 class.Since 1998 she's been competing and winning numerous events, for example, competing in the SCORE Baja where she came in 3rd on an all-woman team in 2008. After taking time off to concentrate on raising her son (now in his 20s) Jen came back to racing in 2016 with the NORRA Mexican 1000 where she earned 1st in the modern lights class and 5th overall bike! Jen was the only woman who had ever raced that route with both a bike AND a car.In her 26 years of racing, Jen has experienced amazing wins and devastating losses. She has learned from incredible mentors and had to make crucial, tough decisions. She's made big sacrifices and prioritized her family. Yet Jen has seen and experienced many things that most Moms have not, as one of the leading women in the field of off-road racing. Today on the podcast, Jennifer Morton will challenge you to get out of your comfort zone & create your own amazing legacy!Need some coaching feedback about your own life? NASCAR Xfinity Las Vegas Winner Riley Herbst doubled down on that victory with a win in SCORE Baja 1000 (winning his class, and 8th overall), which spanned from La Paz to Ensenada, totaling 1,310 miles. Herbst and his father Troy Herbst fought their way to victory. Herbst drove the middle section while his champion father Troy started the race for the first time in six years while devoting his time to his son's NASCAR career. Another third-generation Las Vegas desert racer Jordan Dean, 25, finished the race. Listen...
Bryce Menzies capped off a dominant 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship over the weekend by earning the overall win in the 56th SCORE Baja 1000, teaming up with Tavo Vildosola and Andy McMillin to conquer more than 1300 miles up the Baja Peninsula from La Paz to Ensenada. The win made him the 2023 Trophy Truck class champion with three wins in four races, as well as just the 10th driver in history to have won the Baja 1000, Baja 500, and San Felipe 250. Menzies' accolades extend far beyond SCORE or even just the desert, though; from short course championships in multiple classes, to a pair of wins in the unique Red Bull Frozen Rush, to a 379-foot jump over a New Mexico ghost town to set a Guinness World Record, his name is a consistent presence in record books of all types.Listen Now: Check out this episode featuring Bryce from March 2018! In this episode, Tricia and I were treated to a morning with Dave and Nicole' Cougher at their beautiful house and gardens in El Dorado Ranch, north of San Felipe. These two came down to San Felipe in the early 2000s, immediately fell in love with the area, and began planning and constructing their retirement home. They are a tight knit family with strong ties to their children. They successfully home schooled their youngest son in San Felipe. In addition to becoming big aficionados of off-road racing, they have participated in the SCORE Baja 250-- and won their division. They are extremely public service oriented and have done much to develop ties between the foreign and Mexican national populations of our community. Dave is soon to become the first foreigner to be granted Mexican citizenship in the newly established Municipality of San Felipe. They are extremely gracious hosts--Where else would you get a breakfast treat and mezcal at 10:30 in the morning? We hope you will have as much fun hearing their stories as Tricia and I did. Today's podcast discusses GHA Racing's Class 11 Championship winning Season. While most racers start racing slower and less expensive vehicles and move up to faster and more costly classes, GHA began in a Spec Trophy Truck and decided to move down to a Class 11 Beetle. Driver and team owner, Alex Gonzales, laughs as he says they have “Racing dyslexia, --but you haven't lived until you're flying through the air and you look over, and there is another bug 5 feet from your door flying along with you!” I met the GHA team after their epic 42 hour and 44-minute SCORE Baja 1000 run. They lost their transmission early in the race; and spent two and a half hours replacing it. After spotting the field a 2.5 hour head start they put the pedal to the metal and finished a scant three seconds behind the second-place car. They were filthy and exhausted when I saw them, and as much as I wanted to interview them right there, I let them clean up and get some rest, and we spoke the following day. The GHA team supports The City of Refuge, a private home in Tijuana that houses 16 formerly homeless children. You can read about it and donate through their Miracles per Miles program. "Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible." — Doug Larson In today's podcast, we meet Mike Steel from Idiot Racing. His dream was to race the Baja 1000 in a Class 11 VW Bug built with his own hands. He documented the build on his Instagram page and won many fans and followers. His first race was the SCORE Baja 500 on June 13, 2021. The team of rookies took the green flag and made it to the first dirt section. Then, at mile 35, the trouble began. They snapped a balljoint and were stuck on a steep hillside. A group of locals formed an ad-hoc pit crew. They held the car on the hill, fixed the balljoint, and towed them to the top. At race mile 50, trouble returned. They did a field rebuild of the carburetor and jury-rigged the failing alternator. A few miles later, down on power, another hill climb finally ended their race. The chase team arrived and, given the location, decided to drive back to Ensenada and grab the trailer rather than tow the broken car with only a strap. They removed all the valuables from the VW and went to get the trailer. When they returned, it was gone. Was it stolen or towed by some good samaritans? They searched for the car vainly. Mike's wife Cynthia made an Instagram post alerting the world to their situation. The offroad racing community sprung into action. By the middle of the following day, a local Baja citizen had located the vehicle -stripped and abandoned but reportedly in pretty good shape. Since recovering the car, Steel has been fixing the damage and making the rounds to the So Cal VW community. He's stocking up on parts and plans to be back for the SCORE Baja 1000 in November 2021 Follow his progress at Idiotracing.com and Idiot.racing on Instagram.
