As Americans have begun to make their mark in the Dakar Rally over recent years, few have more potential to become long-term icons of the event, or the sport of rally raid, than Seth Quintero. Dominant in American desert racing as a teenager, winning events from the Mint 400 to the UTV World Championship, Quintero earned the call from Red Bull to compete on a global stage for the first time in 2020, and he debuted at Dakar in 2021. In his first two Dakars, he won 18 combined stages in the Light Prototype class, including a record 12 in 2022, before finally scoring his first overall podium with a second place last year. For this year, he's been promoted to the T1 class with Toyota Gazoo Racing, where he replaces defending event winner Nasser Al-Attiyah.Listen Now: Check out this episode featuring Seth from August 2019! If you were to split Brian Deegan's career into three pieces—motocross, short course, and rallycross—most top racers or riders in each category would be happy to settle for what he accomplished there. On two wheels, Deegan was a pioneer of freestyle motocross whose ghost ride across the finish line in Los Angeles birthed a whole new sport; in off-road trucks, he scored numerous wins and titles, including the Crandon World Championship; in rallycross, he was a regular title contender in Global Rallycross who added multiple medals there to his FMX haul, including gold in 2011. But Deegan's proudest accomplishment may be that three kids are following in his footsteps. Hailie has parlayed her off-road successes into multiple NASCAR rides, Haiden's prowess on a 250 earned him the inaugural SuperMotocross title, and Hudson continues to excel in youth motocross.Listen Now: Check out this episode featuring Brian from May 2019! His third career Funny Car title in 2022 was extra sweet for multiple reasons: not only did it come in Capps' first year of team ownership, it also made him the first driver to win back-to-back titles in 20 years. Jean Shepherd was born on July 26th, 1921 on the South Side of Chicago to Jean and Anna Shepherd. He grew up in Hammond, Indiana, which according to Shep was a “tough and mean” industrial city. As an adolescent, Shepherd worked as a mail boy in a steel mill. He began his radio career at the age of sixteen, doing weekly sportscasts for WJOB in Hammond. That job led to juvenile roles on network radio in Chicago, including that of Billy Fairchild in the serial “Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy.” One of the programs that later came to symbolize Shepherd's childhood, thanks to his 1983 film A Christmas Story, was Red Ryder. During World War II, Shepherd served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps, installing radar equipment and furthering a lifelong dislike for authority figures. After the war, he studied acting in Chicago at the Goodman Theatre and briefly engineering and psychology at Indiana University. He left Indiana without a degree to take a radio gig in Cincinnati, which led him to a series of radio jobs, each better than the previous. After working at WTOD in Toledo, Ohio, Shepherd spent the early 1950s at WSAI and WLW in Cincinnati, and had a late-night broadcast on KYW in Philadelphia. He moved to New York for WOR and debuted on February 26th, 1955. WOR is a fifty-thousand watt clear-channel AM station and was the flagship affiliate of the Mutual Broadcasting System. Mutual Broadcasting had formed on September 28th, 1934 as a cooperative of stations WOR New York, WGN Chicago, WXYZ Detroit, and WLW Cincinnati. The members shared telephone-line transmission facilities and agreed to collectively enter into contracts with advertisers for their network shows. After a deal with Don Lee's chain of west coast networks, Mutual went coast-to-coast on December 29th, 1936. The other major networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, were corporations. When World War II ended, domestic manufacturing restrictions were lifted. TV became a focal point as the other networks pumped their radio profits into the new medium. Mutual's cooperative status meant it never had the resources to move into TV, although affiliates like WOR did run a local TV station in New York. Mutual remained a cooperative until 1952 when General Tire became the parent company. By 1955 radio was changing. Drama, which had dominated the dial for more than two decades, was on its way out due to both its and TV production costs. More and more network programming was being turned over to local affiliates. These local affiliates employed a new generation of hosts that had grown up with Jack Benny, Fred Allen, and other observant humorists. Shepherd's peers were Johnny Carson, Jack Paar, Rod Serling, and Steve Allen. Shepherd was working an overnight slot for WOR in 1956. Facing a lack of sponsorship, he was about to be fired when he did an unauthorized commercial for Sweetheart Soap who didn't sponsor his program. WOR immediately canned him. But, listeners complained in droves and Sweetheart actually offered to sponsor him. WOR immediately brought him back. The overnight slot allowed him to riff with little need for the kind of corporate oversight that faced daytime and primetime hosts. That year, during a discussion on how easy it was to manipulate the best-seller lists, Shepherd suggested that his listeners visit bookstores and ask for a copy of a fictional novel called I, Libertine by a Frederick R. Ewing. Fans of the show planted references so widely that there were claims it made The New York Times Best Seller list. It led to an actual book deal with Ballantine. Theodore Sturgeon wrote most of it with Shepherd's outline guiding him. Betty Ballantine finished the novel when Sturgeon fell asleep during a marathon writing session to meet the deadline. Famed illustrator Frank Kelly Freas did the cover art. The book was published on September 13th, 1956 with all proceeds going to charity.

Employee rights. While investment managers tend to exercise most voting rights in corporations, bought with pension, life insurance and mutual fund money, employees also exercise voice through collective bargaining rules in labor law. Increasingly, corporate law has converged with labor law. The United States is in a minority of Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries that, as yet, has no law requiring employee voting rights in corporations, either in the general meeting or for representatives on the board of directors. On the other hand, the United States has the oldest voluntary codetermination statute for private corporations, in Massachusetts since 1919 passed under the Republican governor Calvin Coolidge, enabling manufacturing companies to have employee representatives on the board of directors, if corporate stockholders agreed. Also in 1919 both Procter & Gamble and the General Ice Delivery Company of Detroit had employee representation on boards. In the early 20th century, labor law theory split between those who advocated collective bargaining backed by strike action, those who advocated a greater role for binding arbitration, and proponents of codetermination as "industrial democracy". Today, these methods are seen as complements, not alternatives. A majority of countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development have laws requiring direct participation rights. In 1994, the Dunlop Commission on the Future of Worker-Management Relations: Final Report examined law reform to improve collective labor relations, and suggested minor amendments to encourage worker involvement. Congressional division prevented federal reform, but labor unions and state legislatures have experimented. Corporations are chartered under state law, the larger mostly in Delaware, but leave investors free to organize voting rights and board representation as they choose. Because of unequal bargaining power, but also historic caution of labor unions, shareholders monopolize voting rights in American corporations. From the 1970s employees and unions sought representation on company boards. This could happen through collective agreements, as it historically occurred in Germany or other countries, or through employees demanding further representation through employee stock ownership plans, but they aimed for a voice independent from capital risks that could not be diversified. Corporations where workers attempted to secure board representation included United Airlines, the General Tire and Rubber Company, and the Providence and Worcester Railroad. However, in 1974 the Securities and Exchange Commission, run by appointees of Richard Nixon, rejected that employees who held shares in AT&T were entitled to make proposals to include employee representatives on the board of directors. This position was eventually reversed expressly by the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 §971, which subject to rules by the Securities and Exchange Commission entitles shareholders to put forward nominations for the board. Instead of pursuing board seats through shareholder resolutions, for example, the United Auto Workers successfully sought board representation by collective agreement at Chrysler in 1980, and the United SteelWorkers secured board representation in five corporations in 1993. However, it was clear that employee stock ownership plans were open to abuse, particularly after Enron collapsed in 2003. Workers had been enticed to invest an average of 62.5 percent of their retirement savings from 401(k) plans in Enron stock, against basic principles of prudent, diversified investment, and had no board representation. This meant, employees lost a majority of pension savings. For this reason, employees and unions have sought representation simply for investment of labor, without taking on undiversifiable capital risk. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

Much Ado About Nothing is set in 1945 as soldiers return from the war in the Pacific, this contemporary setting of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is a unique combination of classic Shakespeare and modern Broadway.  In the style of a 1940's musical, this version of Much Ado About Nothing was a run-away hit for the Nashville Shakespeare Festival's 2012 season. Shakespeare's timeless humor combined with these expertly crafted original songs by two of Nashville's premiere musical theater songwriters make this a slam-dunk audience pleaser. Fred Wallace Blanchard, 88, was received into the arms of Jesus on Monday, January 2, 2023. The family will be receiving visitors on Tuesday, January 10, from 6 – 8:00 p.m., at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive,Waco. A service celebrating Fred's life will be held at Meadowbrook Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 11, at 10:00 a.m. There will be a private family burial at a later time.Fred was the seventh child of nine siblings born to SW "Dick" Blanchard and Bertha Anderson Blanchard on March 21, 1934, in Mound, Texas. He grew up attending Mound Schools and helping on the family farm until he enlisted in the Army in 1954. He served for two years and met the love of his life, Joy McCarver, when he was home on furlough in 1955. They corresponded through letter writing until his discharge in 1956. Fred and Joy married on September 22, 1956. Joy is convinced she wooed him with her ham sandwiches and sodas while working at the Gatesville Drug Store. Once married, they moved to Waco. Fred and Joy were blessed with two boys, Craig Wallace and Brad Dean. As the boys were growing up, the family joined other families and took many camping, fishing, and hunting trips. Fred taught the boys important lessons like how to drink black coffee and eat SPAM as well as respect for the wildlife and the natural Texas reserves. He also taught them the importance of a strong work ethic, how to serve others, how to treat others with dignity and respect, and how to be a man after God's heart. Fred worked at General Tire, advancing to a Supervisor position in the shipping department. He retired from General Tire after 32 years.During retirement, Fred worked at Clifton Upholstery for several years and then served many people by fixing their lawn care equipment from his home workshop. He really enjoyed people coming by the house to visit while dropping off and picking up their equipment. He could always be found "out back." Fred was an avid Texas Rangers baseball fan, watching the games as much as possible. He and Joy also attended the Lady Bears basketball games. They enjoyed travelling with friends across the United States, seeing sights and having fun. Fred was a longtime, dedicated member and Deacon of Beverly Hills Baptist Church. He was instrumental in starting a successful bus ministry through the 70's and 80's. He and Joy served faithfully at Beverly Hills Baptist Church through multiple ministries for over 50 years before joining Meadowbrook Baptist Church in 2008 and serving as an usher.Fred was preceded in death by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joy Blanchard of Waco; his son, Craig Blanchard (Diana) of Waco; his son, Brad Blanchard (Sharon) of Waco; grandchildren Matt Blanchard of Waco, Kristen (Blanchard) Holland of Waco, Taylor Blanchard (Heather) of McKinney, and Collin Blanchard of Waco; two great-grandchildren, Cohen and Reese Holland; sisters, Wyona Miller of Grand Lake, Colorado and Sue Magee of Gatesville, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews.Pall Bearers are Taylor Blanchard, Collin Blanchard, Frank Wallace, Mike Hardcastle, Tracey Patzke, and Mark McCarver. Matt Blanchard will serve as an Honorary Pall Bearer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Fred to Meadowbrook Baptist Church or Baylor Scott & White Hospice.
