On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Kristi Gole, EVP of Strategy at Global Hotel Alliance (GHA), about the importance of collaboration and how the alliance helps these hotels compete against the world's largest brands. Kristi shares examples of brand partnerships that GHA's loyalty program has allowed them to start with complimentary luxury brands, and she gives us a great formula for evaluating partnership opportunities. What You Will Learn in This Episode: How GHA became the largest alliance of independent hotel brands and the benefits this provides to its members. Why the GHA Discovery loyalty program was transformed into “Discovery Dollars” and how this new approach is more rewarding for members. What strategies Kristi Gole used to attract high-net-worth customers and enhance customer engagement. How the collaborative environment within GHA helps independent hotel brands compete globally, share best practices, and grow. Why Kristi values deep relationships over standard partnerships and how aligning with like-minded partners can lead to successful collaborations. What key technological and operational challenges GHA faced, and how ensuring tech compatibility is crucial for a seamless customer experience. A Collective Strength in Hospitality Formed in 2004, GHA's mission was to aid independent hotels in competing globally against large hotel chains. Today, it's the largest alliance of independent hotel brands, comprising 40 brands and 800 hotels across 100 countries. This alliance offers a collaborative platform for these brands to share resources, best practices, and cross-promote services. The alliance provides tools and platforms for independent hotels to remain authentic while benefiting from a larger network. This unique value proposition has enabled GHA member hotels to retain their independence and character while being part of a valuable global support system. How Strategic Partnerships Elevate the Customer Experience A core aspect of GHA's strategy is building deep, strategic partnerships that enhance customer offerings. The collaboration with Regent Seven Seas Cruises, for example, attracted high-net-worth customers by offering Discovery Dollars usable at hotels. Launched publicly in 2010, the GHA Discovery loyalty program was designed to provide customer value, encourage cross-promotion, and increase bookings through profitable channels. In 2021, GHA revamped the loyalty program into “Discovery 2.0,” transitioning from a points-based system to a cash-back model called “Discovery Dollars.” This shift aimed to make rewards more accessible and appealing to a broader audience. Scaling and Innovating for the Future GHA plans to continue expanding and iterating on the Discovery Dollar currency. With a goal of reaching 100 million members, the focus remains on signing new brands and growing their partnership network. Kristi emphasized the importance of aligning with partners with a similar mindset and targeting the same luxury segment. She shares why GHA looks for partners who are agile, entrepreneurial, and approachable. The group comprises unions, the Federation of Small Businesses and the Chamber of Commerce, and their equivalent counterparts from Spain. Kevin Ruiz told us more. The GHA is once again supporting the 'Stoptober' campaign, encouraging smokers to quit for 28 days and beyond. The campaign follows the NHS campaign in the UK, where research shows that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to improve public health and reduce smoking-related illnesses. We spoke to Director of Public Health Helen Carter, and Aiden Lane of the GHA's Smoking Cessation clinic to the studio. There's a big charity event this weekend raising money for the GBC Open Day fund. Ian Howes and our very own Stefan Borge will be "Rocking around the Rock" on Saturday morning and encourage you to get involved. LifeCome Care, a company providing domiciliary care for the GHA, made the news yesterday after complaints on of changes in carers, claims of no vetting, and various other issues. Ros Astengo spoke to Opposition member Atrish Sanchez for the feedback that they've received from the public. Local navy enthusiast Michael Sanchez was a teenager in 1982 when the Falklands war broke out between Britain and Argentina. Sensing that Gibraltar would play a vital strategic role for the British Armed Forces, he began a diary chronicling the events which would last for 74 days. Now, over 40 years later, Michael's published it as a book... it's called "Falklands conflict - A diary from Gibraltar".What is 'Gibraltarian English'? Why is it worth studying local authors and their writing? Professor Elena Seaone of the University of Vigo has been studying variation in World Englishes, including interactions between Gibraltar English and Llanito. And, the International Day of Older People has been marked by the Ministry of Equality. How do older people on the Rock feel and are they stereotyped? Our reporter Kevin Ruiz asked people for their thoughts along Main Street this morning. Hosted on Acast. There is no treaty deal yet. The talks continue. We're trying to make sense of what emerged from the meetings in Brussels. Some have said it's positive that the process continues and that there's still good will to make it happen. What is the Chief Minister's verdict on how yesterday went? He was on Viewpoint last night: our reporter Christina Cortes has been listening back to Mr Picardo's comments. We also hear reactions from the Leader of the Opposition Keith Azopardi, editor of the Gibraltar Chronicle Brian Reyes, former GSD Minister Peter Montegriffo, and Diario Area editor Pablo Gomez. It's Wear Purple Day, and the volunteers at the Gibraltar Alzheimers and Dementia Society and the GHA are encouraging everyone in the community to show support and raise awareness by wearing purple. Raising awareness of dementia reduces stigma, it fosters understanding and promotes early diagnosis and support for those affected. We spoke to the Chair of GADS, Jeanette Ochello, and looked ahead to a 24 Hour Memory Walk event that is planned for tomorrow.Jose Mari Ruiz told us the latest in local sports, including news in the world of boxing, a lookahead to rugby where Gibraltar national side are in action this weekend, and Lincoln player Liam Payas has become the youngest player to ever feature in the UEFA League competition at 14 years old. The GHA has confirmed some of its services have been impacted by the global IT outage. Its medical computer system is not working. GBC understands this is used by GPs to book appointments, view patient notes, order prescriptions and make referrals. Shelina Assomull and Jonathan Sacramento told us more about the outage, and we also spoke to the GHA Director General Kevin McGee. Cyber Security is a hot topic right now - both locally and globally - over the last few days we've been reporting a number of incidents of telephone banking scams with the total amount of money scammed now in the millions. Then this morning, news broke about a massive IT outage, affecting airports, businesses, transport links, supermarkets, and broadcasters around the world. It's an issue which is difficult to understand, it often - quite literally - goes over our heads. Peter Bassill shed some light on the situation. The UEFA conference league qualifier between St Josephs and Shelbourne FC at the Europa Point Stadium was unfortunately overshadowed by chants of “Gibraltar es Espanol” by the Shelbourne fans before the game and after the fulltime whistle was blown by the referee. Jose Mari Ruiz was at the game and heard the chants first-hand. And, on this week's edition of "Llanitos Abroad", we're going about as far afield as possible. We caught up with teacher Lynette Pritchard in Australia where it was nearly bedtime! She told us about what life is like down under. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on the hemp podcast we learn about the Global Hemp Association's variety trials that span eight states in six geographical regions. Our first guest is Mandi Kerr, founder and CEO of the Global Hemp Association, which, according to Kerr is “a platform of entrepreneurs, manufacturers, farmers, distributors that have come together to support and build the industrial hemp industry.” One way GHA is building the hemp industry is by conducting variety trials. In conjunction with Kansas-based Performance Crop Research, GHA is growing 10 varieties of fiber hemp in various geographical regions across the country with the intent of providing its members with solid data about which varieties do best in each region. Our second guest is Melissa Nelson-Baldwin — field scientist, hemp farmer and owner of Performance Crop Research — who has assembled a team of crop specialists specifically for these trials. “We're working with research scientists within the National Alliance of Independent Crop Consultants,” Nelson-Baldwin said. “This is what everyone does full time. And so we chose crop research scientists that either had hemp experience or a lot of experience within the research space.” This is the first year for the trials, but they will be conducted over many years to provide as much data as possible for farmers and processors.
