Send us Fan MailA lot of people picture an NHRA Top Fuel driver as someone who grew up with unlimited passes and a polished pipeline to the pros. Our conversation with Jasmine Salinas tells a different story, one built on work boots, family pressure, and a scrap business in San Jose, California that taught her how to grind long before she ever went 334 miles an hour. We talk about what it really feels like to enter drag racing later than most, then have to “fast track” your learning in front of fans, sponsors, and competitors. Jasmine walks us through the moments that changed everything: discovering Top Fuel for the first time at an NHRA national event, realizing women were already winning at the highest level, and deciding to climb the ladder the right way. We get into the unglamorous but essential steps, from licensing and Top Alcohol Dragster seat time to learning how a race team functions day to day. She also shares why she turned down an early Top Fuel opportunity, and how patience can be a competitive advantage when you're building confidence, consistency, and control. We also go deep on the business reality of motorsports funding. Jasmine explains how Scrappers Racing mixes NHRA and IHRA events, why eighth-mile racing can be a smart strategy for part-time teams, and what fans often miss about the cost of putting on a show. If you care about women in motorsports, drag racing sponsorship, or the mindset behind elite performance, this one delivers. Send us a textIt happened! We officially have somebody from my Wishlist of guests on the podcast today. And, that person is none other then multi-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion, Brittany Force. I am still baffled that this all happened, but so appreciative that it did. Brittany is a rad human and I hope everyone that listens takes something away from our conversation. Multi-time NHRA Top Fuel World Champion, Brittany Force, drives for John Force Racing. “You're gonna get fired anyway, so you might as well start racing!” Clay Millican was a forklift operator. He quit that job to chase a dream in drag racing, and now he's an NHRA Top Fuel legend. He's also our very first guest on It's Not the Car! This show's format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Guest Teaches Us a Thing"—in this case, what it feels like to have 11,000 hp under your right foot. If you like it, don't worry—there are plenty more to come whether you like it or not. Related Trivia: Top Fuel racing can be absurdly violent. Clay's car once vibrated so much that it shook his dental crowns from his mouth. Mike, INTC's producer, wrote this episode description late at night with approximately four functional brain cells, and he will probably suffer the same fate simply by continuing to miss his dentist appointments. This episode was produced by Mike Perlman. ** Support It's Not the Car: Contribute on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/notthecar ** Topic suggestions, feedback, questions? Let us know what you think! We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts. Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine. We don't love racing for the nuts and bolts—we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel. New episodes every Tuesday.
