Friend of the podcast Tim Amos rejoins Jagbags to tell about his visit to the famed Brickyard for the running of the Indianapolis 500, considered the "greatest spectacle in racing". Tim talks all about what he saw at the race, from the crowds, the smells, the EDM concert in the middle of the infield WHILE THE RACE IS HAPPENING, the nearby museum, the differences between Indy cars and NASCAR stock cars, and the history of the Indy 500 itself. He also compares the Indy 500 to the NSCAR race held last year in Chicago. This episode is the next best thing to being there!
There was a time when the winner of the Indianapolis 500 was a household name in America. AJ Foyt, Al Unser, Bobby Under, Mario Andretti, Rick Mears to name a few. Legends of the sport and none were any bigger than Johnny Rutherford who won the 500 in 1974... and in 1976... and in 1980... that's right, he took the checkered flag 3 times in 6 years... but on the Past Our Prime podcast, he'll tell us about the one that got away in 75 that still eats him up to this day... We'll talk about some of the scariest crashes of his career including one where he somehow avoided disaster when two others died at the Brickyard in 1973... and the one in 66 that kept him from racing for years... until he returned better than ever. The biggest wins and disappointments from one of Auto Racing's all-time greats... Lone Star JR recollects on the highs and lows of a career that 50 years ago became immortalized when he won the Indy 500 for the first time. Learn more about your ad choices. On the 30-year anniversary of his last Indianapolis 500, Penske legend Rick Mears joins The Race IndyCar Podcast for a special episode. The four-time Indy 500 winner discusses his dirt-racing roots and how that helped him carve out almost immediate success at the Speedway, winning just three years after his first attempt in which he failed to qualify for the race. He discusses turning down Bernie Ecclestone's offer to race for Brabham in F1, his wait for a second Indy 500 win and how the burns he received in pitlane at the 500 impacted him in 1982. Of course, his 1991 victory is also covered, Mears' favourite win given it helped him join the four-time club, but also how he rebounded from his first Indy 500 crash - that wasn't his fault - the day before qualifying. Mears also describes his role as a driver advisor at Penske which he has held since retiring, how that stacks up in satisfaction against his own Indy 500 wins, and Scott McLaughlin's rapid IndyCar rise under Mears's tutelage.
Mark Glover, the long-time Sacramento-based journalist, will continue his passion for motorsports this week. He will attend the Indy 500 for the 58th time. It will be a family affair. Glover's son will accompany his father for the 30th time. The 106th Indy 500 is scheduled May 29 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Glover is our guest on this episode of The Weekly Driver podcast. Co-host Bruce Aldrich and I talk with the Indy 500 historian about his legacy at the race, the event he first attended with his father when he was a young boy. Glover was also our guest on Episode #39 in 2018. We also talk with Glover in Episode #227 about iconic drivers. From four-time winner A.J. Foyt to Hélio Castroneves and his chances of breaking the career-win record shared by Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. Indy 500: Veterans, Rookies Intriguing We also discuss changes in the race and its evolving cars, Mark's favorite drivers and memories from the race "I'm kind of chomping at the bit because I missed the two," says Glover, of the Covid-19 altered event. "Of course, no one could go in 2020; And last year, they didn't want you to go through airports and it was still shaky and I didn't go. "I am literally starving for my Indy 500 fix. What really intrigues me this year is the mix of veterans and young folks. You have some very capable older drivers, multiple winners of the race, names that are instantly recognizable throughout the field and then you have a lot of kids. Indy 500: Unknown Winner? "It is possible this time around that on Sunday race day you could have a winner, a young man who 98 percent of the sporting public has no idea who he is." Glover is also a long-time automotive columnist. Read his new car reviews and automotive features on his website AutoGlo. The 106th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled Sunday, May 29. Four-Time Indy 500 Winner Helio Castroneves will try for a fifth in a couple weeks. A fifth win would put him above some of the greatest drivers to race at Indy including A.J. When a Motorsports icon walks into the room, that room changes. Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis welcome four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears to the table for a fascinating discussion about his storied racing career. From the streets of Bakersfield came a young man, with a motorcycle and a thirst for competition. The sensible influence of a mother, added two more wheels underneath Rick Mears. Little did she know that it would lead to being one of the fastest racers on the planet. First, young Rick honed his skills on the dirt of Ascot Park, jumping and sliding around in Sprint Buggies. The world of off-road racing took young him to the desert, where races like the Mint 400 and the Baja 1000 introduced Mears to some of the giants of Motorsport. As his reputation grew, so did opportunity. Bill Simpson plucked Mears from the dirt into open-wheeled racecars. Two years later, this quiet Californian was attempting to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. His first 500 attempt came with failure. The experience of not making the 33-car field came with learning opportunities and a random meeting that would change the course of Mears' life. Enter Roger Penske. The famed racing team owner tabbed the virtually unknown racer to pilot one of his open-wheeled beasts. The duo blossomed into what became one of the most successful driver-car owner combinations in the sports' history. Mears' style was calm and calculated. Rick admits that his demeaner led to an embarrassing and potentially dangerous moment in the opening laps of his first Indy 500. It was so bad, that he didn't even want to cue the radio to tell Roger Penske. It's a story you have to hear to believe. Rick says that "being strapped to a bomb," inside of an Indycar, will teach a racecar driver to go to the limit of speed and not go over. How did a young Mears deal with the ever-present factory of fear and develop the uncanny ability to walk a car to the edge of disaster so successfully? While his early career was pretty clean, disaster did strike Mears eventually. He admits to Dale Jr. and Mike that the horrific crash at San Air in Canada that left his feet shattered, was caused by driver error. Mears survived the crash but endured through most of his career feeling the pain caused by the incident. Mears became a four-time Indy 500 Champion, a feat only accomplished by three other drivers in the 104th running of the world's most famous race. But during some of those wins, Mears viewed Indy as just another race. It wasn't until later in his racing life, that he learned to appreciate what Indianapolis truly meant. Out of a curiosity created by filming the tv show "Lost Speedways" Mike Davis inquires about Rick Mears' take on the USAC / CART split in 1979. This question leads to Mears revealing that he had once tested a Formula-1 car and even had a signed contract with Bernie Ecclestone. Why did Mears stay the course in American open-wheel racing rather than a move overseas to the world of F1? Mears opens up about his disastrous 1992 Indy crash and the change in his mindset that led to hanging up the helmet. While many wanted him to go for an unprecedented 5th Indy 500 win, Mears knew it was his time to walk away. OPEN SEGMENT Before Mears entered the Bojangles Studio, the DJD gang took a fresh new swing at the "Open Segment" of the show to talk about: Kyle Busch leaving his racecar on pit road and walking away to the garage at Darlington. Joey Logano's controversial last lap contact with William Byron for the win. Is Joey doing it right? How should Byron handle it moving forward? Dale Jr. and Rutledge Wood's role in the Kentucky Derby broadcast and the awkwardness of interviewing Jack Harlow and Drake. What should the "Open Segment" of the show be called anyway? ASKJR presented by Xfinity Hannah Newhouse serves up fan questions about: Miami's F1 Weekend Strange Things Dale has autographed. North Wilkesboro Speedway News Dale's Rich Strike moment and more! #MediaNetwork #Complete #Sports #NBA #UFC #Exciting #Countdown The launch is upon us for the Complete Media Network!!! The level of excitement has reached a fever pitch here at our headquarters. Complete Sports Media is excited to be joining the prestigous Complete Media Network. Jason and Darren had their weekly podcast and they had a very fun and entertaining conversation. The two sports analysts eventually looked over the new website that will have an official soft launch tomorrow at 9:00 AM. It is great to see and hear Jason's reaction to the many elements of the site. The guys started talking about their mutual love of food and it will make you laugh! They began the sports talk with the Indianapolis 500 race that ran yesterday. The race track worked with the local health authority and they agreed on a fan capacity of 40% of the max capacity. That figure is 135,000 patrons and it brought an energy to the race and festivities that hasn't been seen in 14 months. The Pandemic forced the sport to go without fans for a stretch and has slowly started allowing more and more people to attend live races. This was extra special and was historic as Helio Castroneves won his 4th Indy 500 race at 46 years young. He tied legendary racers AJ Foyt, Al Unser Sr. and Rick Mears are the ony drivers in history to have 4 wins at the famous brickyard. Castroneves said in the post race interview that he felt great to be part of a kind of geriatic sportsman club with 43 year old Tom Brady and 50 year old Phil Mickelson who both won major championships this year! The talk turned to the huge game 7 in the NHL playoffs between the overwhelming favorite Toronto Maple Leafs against the underdog Montreal Canadiens. The Leafs seemed to have this series well in hand until the Habs won two straight overtime games to stave off elimination and force a deciding winner takes all game. The Winnipeg Jets await the winner of this series. The first round of the NBA playoffs is just a week old and all 8 series are in full swing. We broke down all 4 matchups from each conference with only one decided so far. Watch the breakdowns as there is some great insight from the boys! This past weekend was a rare weekend off for the UFC but the top MMA organization is back at it next weekend. The guys analyzed the Main and co-main event as well as a few others. Tanner Boser a recent podcast guest here at Complete Sports Media will be in action against Illir Latifi in heavyweight clash on the preliminary card. Enjoy, Take Care, Love yah, Bye for now!

Pit Pass Indy is loaded with content this week as the “Month of May” kicks off this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway with three full weeks of activity culminating with the 105th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday, May 30. But action kicks off at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Friday with practice and qualifications for Saturday's GMR Grand Prix on the IMS Road Course. There have already been two races this May, however. Texas Motor Speedway hosted a doubleheader weekend with the Genesys 300 on Saturday night, May 1 with Scott Dixon driving to another dominating victory for the second year in a row. On Sunday, May 2, 21-year-old Pato O'Ward scored his first career IndyCar win in the XPEL 375. Today's show will take a look back at the Texas doubleheader. It was going to be the theme of last week's Pit Pass Indy, but with the passing of three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser at the age of 87, we created a tribute to one of the biggest names in Indy 500 history. After the two Texas races we take a post-race “Pit Walk” featuring on some of the biggest stories that came out of the Texas doubleheader including race winners Scott Dixon and Pato O'Ward, Team Penske rookie Scott McLaughlin, four-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Rick Mears, Team Penske race strategist Jon Bouslog, Graham Rahal, Tony Kanaan, Will Power, Colton Herta and Arrow McLaren SP team owners Sam Schmidt and Ric Peterson as well as team president Taylor Kiel. Our featured guest this week is Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles, who discusses the plans for 137,000 fans at this year's Indianapolis 500, making it the largest sporting event in the World since the COVID-19 Pandemic began last year. We also discuss a variety of interesting topics with Miles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
This week begins with some sad news as three-time Indianapolis 500 winning driver Bobby Unser passed away late Sunday night after a lengthy illness at the age of 87. Upon reflecting on the life of this Indy 500 legend (who is also a 10-time Pikes Peak Hill Climb champion), a line from Dr. Seuss comes to mind: “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Not only was Unser one of IndyCar racing's most legendary drivers, he was also one of its greatest personalities. He was fast and fearless on the track, and talkative and controversial outside of the car. He won 37 IndyCar Series races in both the United States Auto Club (USAC) and CART. He also won 52 poles in his career. His Indy 500 wins came in 1968, 1975 and 1981. Once his racing career was over, Unser became part of ABC's television crew that telecast the Indianapolis 500 and other IndyCar races on TV. His personality and bombastic style made him a fan favorite. The episode of Pit Pass Indy is entirely devoted to Unser as host Bruce Martin gives his highly personal reflections on a driver who was a hero as a youngster and became a close friend in life. Racing legend and 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner Mario Andretti, a friend with Unser for most of his career and one of his fiercest rivals, gives his thoughts on Unser. Also, four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears pays tribute to his former teammate at Penske Racing. Instead of recapping the doubleheader action at Texas Motor Speedway this past weekend, those interviews will be part of next week's show on Pit Pass Indy. Learn more about your ad choices. It's Part 2 of the Week In IndyCar Listener Q&A show, using listener-driven questions submitted via social media, with our new format of answering about an hour of prioritized submissions for those with limited time to listen before moving into overtime to handle the majority of the remaining questions. A sampling of the submissions: "MP, when you look at the overall health of the series(which feels like it is still upward trending) what is the one realistic step you think could be taken to help solidify its future? Possibly not realistic and it's expensive but a series along the lines of the F1 Drive to Survive would be amazing for recruiting fans and raising awareness. Plus a win for sponsors due to the exposure." "Hey MP, what would be the most awesome car/driver combo you can think of? How about Senna in a non-winged sprinter? Rick Mears in a group B rally car? What ridiculously silly car could we stick Alex Rossi in that would befit his ennui?" "Recently, it seems like more drivers shuffled out of F1 are considering IndyCar as an option. In the long-term, do you think this is a good thing for the series? Or is the influx of ex-F1 drivers keeping seats away from deserving Road to Indy drivers?" "MP, I was watching the 2011 Indy 500 the other day and I completely forgot about the double file restarts! What were your thoughts on them and do you think IndyCar will ever bring that back?" Two-time Indy 500 winner and IndyCar race steward Arie Luyendyk returns to The Week In IndyCar show to share insights on life inside race control, handling driver conflicts, and his illustrious history as a driver spanning open-wheel and sports cars, all powered by questions submitted by fans via social media. A sampling of the items posed this week: "Arie, Colton Herta had some really not so nice things to say about you on the radio after Rinus Veekay passed him at WWT Raceway, how do you react to the insinuated conflict of interest? Do you contact Colton directly and talk or is there an intermediary? In race control do you automatically recuse yourself of incident review when it comes to Veekay? "Setting the 4-lap record at Indy: Did you know that speed was in the car that day? What were the indicators - practice speed, engine tune, aero, setup? What was the driving experience like? Was it balanced & you felt ahead of it, or at any point was it at the absolute handling limit?" "Arie, any good stories of diving with Rick Mears in his prime? What can you tell us about the Menard-powered beast you drove in 1995?" "Arie, what seems more crazy to you now with the benefit of hindsight: Lapping IMS at 230+ mph in an open-cockpit open-wheel car, or doing fractionally lower speeds on the pre-chicanes Mulsanne Straight in an enclosed Group C Nissan prototype?" John Andretti's visit to The Week In IndyCar show in January of 2018, not long after his colon cancer diagnosis was revealed, was my favorite episode back then and remains so today. After listening to the listener-driven interview after his loss on January 30, 2020, I wanted to take another shot at editing the episode to fix some technical glitches and to trim the show down to the best parts where John spoke on his amazing, multi-faceted career. Please enjoy the warmth, talent, and humility that endeared Andretti to so many, starting with: Update on his physical condition (starts at 6m19s) Leading colon cancer awareness initiative (9m15s) Toughest Indy 500 competitor and birthday story (11m44s) Vehicle he always wanted to race but couldn't (15m56s) How his father Aldo would have fared as an Indy 500 driver (18m07s) Favorite race car liveries he's represented (20m31s) 1990 Porsche IndyCar program and 1991 Jim Hall Lola-Chevy IndyCar effort (25m08s) Dealing with cancer and future goals (38m50s) #CheckIt4Andretti (46m29s) Favorite Jim Hall stories (52m36s) Favorite street car (59m43s) Thoughts on Richard Petty (1h02m14s) Driving for legendary team owners (1h06m53s) Memories of following cousin Michael and Rick Mears during their 1991 Indy 500 duel (1h12m01s) Trying his hand racing in the NHRA (1h14m26s) Riley Children's Hospital (1h23m48s) Driving styles (1h35m00s) Racing at the 1988 Bathurst 1000 (1h45m56s) Subscribe: https://marshallpruettpodcast.com/subscribe Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/MarshallPruettPodcast

His career has taken him around the world countless times to report on everything from Formula 1 to World Rally to Indycar. While the happy mistake of falling into television as a Formula 1 pit-lane reporter in the United States for the SPEED channel and later NBC Sports, followed by his current role as the first Digital Presenter in F1 history, has made him one of the most recognized faces and voices in the sport, his first love was and remains writing. Buxton lives in Oxfordshire, England. Behind the Scenes, Race Car Driver Insights Will's new book, My Greatest Defeat: Stories of hardship and hope from motor racing's finest heroes, is a collection of honest and revealing insights into 20 of the greatest living racing drivers, legends of the worlds of Formula 1, Indycar, NASCAR, Le Mans and Rally. The Need for Design & Speed When we think of speed and the movement of horsepower and race vehicle designs on the track, history has proven that many can truly compete and dominate. From the early years of 1867, races were organized to prove time trials among man and machine, and ultimately progressed to competition with manufacturers, as specialist cars were designed for maximum speed. Throughout race history, from Sprint Cars to NASCAR, to IMSA, and the famed Monaco Grand Prix, this common mantra runs through the racing bloodline across the globe. Porsche Life: The Racing Intensity & History of Bruce Canepa Among the storied history of race legends and designs, there exists a common pursuit of attention to detail and the drive for an impeccable approach to win. From the 2001 Truck Hill Climb of Pikes Peak record breaking run, to pairing up with motorsports icons Rick Mears and Monte Shelton at the 24 Hours of Daytona, then co-driving with Gianpiero Moretti in the famous MOMO team Porsche 935 at Daytona, Mid Ohio, and Riverside in 1980-81, Bruce closed out the 1980's successfully competing in his own Porsche 962 at West Coast IMSA events. In 1988, he purchased his first Porsche 959 and began development of the U.S. legal version. We are honored to have Bruce Canepa, CEO of Canepa Group Inc., http://bit.ly/BruceCanepa, as this week’s special guest to explore his life of racing, design, restoration and the Canepa Museum, a section of the 70,000 sq.ft. Canepa facility.

Howard Holley Presents Against All Odds: How Successful People Overcome Adversity
Rick Rinaman's entrée into the world of Indy car racing came by way of racing go-carts outside of Pittsburgh, PA and carrying tools for Paul Newman's engine builder. Eventually, he landed an entry level, truck-driving position for Penske Racing in Reading, PA. From there, Rick went on to be one of the most successful Chief Mechanics/Crew Chiefs for Indy 500 winning teams that included Helio Castoneves, Emerson Fittipaldi, Al Unser, and Rick Mears. Rick had great successes while with Penske, but he did not achieve success on his own. In 2009, Castroneves said of his crew, “Some of those guys have been here 10 years. They know my style; they know what I like, and they know what I don’t like. But the good news is that we’re a team. We lose together; we win together." In this interview, Rick shares his thoughts on the importance of teamwork, and he reminds us all that sometimes failure just isn't an option.
