"Someone might say, I don't understand music; but most people experience music emotionally and would agree that music is an abstraction. You don't need to put music into words right away—you just listen. Cinema is a lot like music. It can be very abstract, but people have a yearning to make intellectual sense of it, to put it right into words." - David LynchSomeone might say the world lost a giant earlier this year, when the beloved David Lynch shrugged off this mortal coil and bid farewell to the world. As sad as David's passing is, we're beyond lucky to have access to his art and we can experience a work of David Lynch as many times as we want. We can also have a great discussion and a fine playlist that highlights some of the best Lynchian musical moments. Here in Top Ten Songs From The Works Of David Lynch Part 2, we reveal picks 5-1 and wrap up our epic tribute to the man. Matt Dinan came through for us as always with some great banter and praise for the Master himself. If you missed Part 1, get it where you get your podcasts or here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-664-top-ten-songs-from-the-works-of-david/id573735994?i=1000703450054Listen to and enjoy the official Top Ten Songs From The Works Of David Lynch Spotify playlist:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6NwKljTcVUWGZykQA9RW6p?si=9bf0fbbd4c3b44ecIf you've never seen the trailer for Matt's indie short film After The Flesh, give it a look see:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APlUmuDuqs4And don't forget to visit the LA Frankenstein YouTube channel for general Dinan-ness:https://www.youtube.com/@LA_FrankensteinWe've lowered our prices, but not our standards over at the ATTT Patreon! This week, Greg has locked David and Alex out of the recording room, and replaced them with Kierkegaard scholars Rob Wyllie & Matt Dinan. Together, they dive into Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments to examine what it means to become a self, whether truth can be received as a gift, and why Socrates might need a divine upgrade. It's a lively exploration of paradox, passion, and the mysteries at the heart of religious existence.
Earlier this year, the world lost a giant. We here at ATTT HQ are big fans of artists. Artists, complicated and strange so they may seem, are the lifeblood of creativity and man-and-woman-made joy on this bleak planet of ours. In the realm of film & television, David Lynch is in the pantheon of artistic creators, especially when you consider how expertly he incorporated music in his output. Here in Top Ten Songs From The Works Of David Lynch, we're joined by longtime friend of the pod, the immaculate Matt Dinan. We had a blast going through The Master's catalog and highlighting some of our favorite Lynchian musical moments. Picks 10-6 are revealed here in Part 1. What would you imagine this entails for the plot? What do we learn that we would not learn from a ‘one-sided' love story? In the episode, we speak quite a bit about ways of living together.
We're all about trying new things on this here podcast. Thanks again to listener David Fryear for the suggestion to continue our Classic Albums Worst To First series that we started last year with The Songs Of Ok Computer Worst To First. This time we have our sights set on what is arguably the best album from the legendary R.E.M. - 1992's Automatic For The People. 2 of our beloved regulars Matt Dinan and Gabe Scalone return for Part 2 and the cream of the crop in picks 6-1. Our unflappable Worst To First formula has yet to let us down and the final list of these songs in their official WTF order is scientifically proven to be accurate, unless you disagree. With this episode Enduring Interest inaugurates a new occasional series on chapters or parts of great books which tend to be ignored or not much talked about. Matt Dinan is back to discuss a series of brief and fascinating chapters in Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics on the social virtues: gentleness, friendliness, truthfulness and wittiness. Check out Matt's essay “Be Nice,” first published in the Fall 2018 issue of The Hedgehog Review, where he touches on some of these virtues. Matt is an associate professor in the great books program at St. Thomas University in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He does research on classical, Christian, and contemporary political philosophy, and is currently writing a book called Kierkegaard's Socratic Political Philosophy. His essays and reviews have appeared in Perspectives on Political Science and The Review of Politics. Matt is also a contributing writer to The Hedgehog Review. Matt also has a Substack called PREFACES. Matt discussed Kierkegaard's Two Ages with us about a year ago. When I conceived of the idea for this occasional series on underappreciated parts of great books, I thought each of these episodes would be quite short—brief, quick hitting chats about something very particular. Well, as you'll hear, Matt gets rolling on social virtues—as advertised—but our conversation covers lots of ground! Matt talks about what makes the Ethics such a rich book, Aristotle's distinction between moral and intellectual virtue, and the place of these nameless virtues in his full list of moral virtues. But that's not all. We also hit on the niceness of Atlantic Canadians, the importance of laughter to freedom and community, toddler humor, Norm Macdonald, Shakespearean humor, and a theory of Larry David. No micro-episode can contain Matt—plus I'm much too nice to cut him off. So here's a very nice, normal sized episode, full of wit and wisdom.
