Podcast host and life coach Andrea Morton knows what it's like to have bad days as a Mom... not only is she a mom of 3 herself, but she also spends a big part of each week working with overwhelmed, stressed mamas in midlife to help them find real balance and healthier relationships. However, it's not always possible to talk things through with a life coach when YOUR real life is getting crazy - which, more often than not, tends to happen somewhere between Friday at 5pm and Monday morning... while everything is closed for the weekend!  (If you even HAVE a life coach to start with!!! Which everyone should!)That's why this week in the podcast, Andrea will walk listeners through a self-coaching process; explaining through a very personal example how you can begin coaching yourself through a crummy day or in a tough situation by:- exploring how to isolate the thoughts that are really bugging you or bumming you out- figuring out what meaning you are making from the way you are thinking  - helping you to see how to lighten your own load, so that you are no longer reacting from a place of pain- learning how to process your hardest feelingsWhen stress gets heavy, it's natural to yearn for easy comfort or a dopamine surge.  That's why eating ice cream and shopping are so popular with overwhelmed moms!! Those activities don't create lasting feelings of goodness, however.  At best, they are a temporary fix. The ideas shared in this episode can help you permanently stop buffering and avoiding... take back the reins during your own crazy days, and start coaching yourself toward balance and emotional health!

In her groundbreaking book "The Highly Sensitive Person", Psychotherapist Elaine N. Aron, PhD writes, "Most people walk into a room and perhaps notice the furniture, the people... (but) Highly Sensitive Persons can be instantly aware, whether they wish to be or not, of the mood, the friendships and enmities, the freshness or staleness of the air, the personality of the one who arranged the flowers."Oh boy, did she ever nail me. THIS IS ME.  And long before I knew the label 'highly sensitive person,' I knew that not only am I weirdly intuitive in social situations but that I also become emotionally flooded and overstimulated more easily than a lot of the people around me. As Aron shares, when people like me get overwhelmed we become 'distressed, clumsy and confused.'  I am super affected by other people's moods and emotions, and sometimes that has led to reactions I'm not proud of.Yet this same heightened intuition, sensitivity, emotion and empathy also served me well as a teacher, friend and daughter. It was only when I became a Wife and a Mom (surrounded by squabbling kiddos and other people's emotions 24/7) that I REALLY had to face living as a highly sensitive person and figure out once and for all how to better navigate my relationships and manage my own mind and emotions... for the health & well-being of my family.  That is how I found my way to life coaching and (later) the career of my dreams coaching overwhelmed, stressed out mamas like me!Today's super vulnerable podcast is the most personal, powerful thing I've ever shared live.  I hope you'll pass it along to all of the other sensitive, emotional mamas that you may know and love, so they can learn from my funny stories, true confessions and mistakes.(This episode was recorded LIVE in Austin, Texas at The Life Coach School - Mastermind 2022.)

As one of eight children, Crystal Haitsma always thought she'd become a mother someday AFTER she completed her degree in psychology and started her career.  So when she and her husband discovered that they were going to have a baby while she was still an undergrad at university, they had to dig deep to figure out how they could both finish their degrees while figuring out how to be parents.  By the time she graduated Crystal was pregnant with their second baby!During these years Crystal read, "Hold On To Your Kids," by Gordon Neufeld and learned about the attachment theory of parenting.  The theory (aka positive parenting, conscious parenting or intentional parenting) became a bedrock for Crystal and her husband over the coming years as they continued to raise and homeschool their (now) four children. Crystal spent more than a decade reading and taking courses, becoming an expert in the field, and earning her certification as a life and parenting coach.  Today she is a highly successful parenting coach specializing in what she likes to call 'radical connection parenting,' and running her popular By Design membership program.Crystal shares here the poignant story of her second son and his journey toward a diagnosis with Autism Spectrum Disorder and ADHD... and how building an intentional relationship with him based on these innovative parenting principles shifted their family experience away from out-of-control tantrums, stress, loneliness and sorrow into one of connection, growth and mutual understanding. This beautiful episode is a must-listen for all parents!!!  You can enjoy listening to more of Crystal's work and stories on The Freedom Moms Podcast.
