Volunteering to be the best scout leader you can be will always leave a legacy. Many scout leaders “pay it forward” through selfless service to others. Adult leaders must understand the level of their commitment to preventing burnout. Long or short-term leaders need to have a game plan. Developing a leadership team within the unit is critical to success. Adult leaders throughout the year should have activities that focus on the fellowship and teamwork of the leadership. Being recognized for their achievements has more significant when awarded in a leadership team.

We discuss the difficulties of finding people who understand the intricacies of a job in the veterinary profession, and the embarrassment of accidentally recounting  disgusting work stories to non-vet friends over dinner. After qualifying in 2006, Carly has worked within farm, equine, first opinion practice and the referral locum scene. We cover a lot of ground with Bob on this episode.  We dig into his upbringing, overcoming a fear of swimming at West Point and how he deals with fear in general, how he thinks we should measure success as a leader, what he was laser-focused on at Proctor & Gamble, how he stays motivated during tough moments, and much more.  Bob served Procter & Gamble for 33 years with the last four as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer.  During his tenure as CEO of P&G Bob helped to expand the footprint of the company brands such that one billion people became new customers of a company product. Following his career at P&G, Bob was selected by President Obama in 2014 to head the Department of Veterans Affairs.  While at the helm of the VA, Bob was able to help transform the agency into one that truly delivered better care for our Military veterans. Bob McDonald is the recipient of numerous leadership awards and Honorary Doctorate Degrees that include: Hampden Sydney College, University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, Robert Morris University, and Drexel University. In 2010, the University of Utah Alumni Association named Bob a Distinguished Graduate. The West Point Association of Graduates named McDonald for its admired Distinguished Graduate Award in 2017, recognition provided annually to “West Point graduates whose character, distinguished service and stature draw wholesome comparison to the qualities for which West Point strives.” With that distinction, Bob joins Academy graduates like Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway, Gen. William C. Westmoreland, Gen. Alexander M. Haig Jr., Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, Mr. R. James Nicholson, Gen. Eric K. Shinseki, among others. In 2014, The President of the Republic of Singapore awarded Bob the Public Service Star for his work helping shape Singapore's development as an international hub connecting global companies with Asian firms and enterprises. Lastly, Bob has received an award as Scout Leader from the Boy Scouts and Far East Council. Bob McDonald is personally and professionally committed to values-based leadership and to improving the lives of others. He is Chairman of the Board of RallyPoint Networks, Inc.—an online community of active duty military members and Veterans—and serves on the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Public Service, Audia International, Inc., the Association of Graduates of the United States Military Academy, the Boulder Crest Retreat Foundation, and the McCormick Research Institute in Orlando, Florida. Bob and his wife, Diane, are the founders of The McDonald Conference for Leaders of Character at West Point—an annual gathering that brings together the brightest young minds from the best universities around the world and partners them with senior business, nongovernmental organization, and government leaders in a multi-day interactive learning experience. In July, 2020 Bob became the April and Jay Graham Fellow of the George W. Bush Institute.  In this endowed role he serves as a key member of the Bush Institute's Military Service Initiative team, advocating for post-9/11 Veterans and building awareness for the issues that affect their successful transitions to civilian life including employment,  education, and health and wellbeing.  In September, 2020 Bob was appointed to the Biden Transition Advisory Board, to ensure a smooth administration transition if Vice President Biden is elected. Bob McDonald graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the top 2 percent of the Class of 1975. He served as the Brigade Adjutant for the Corps of Cadets and was recognized by The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturing, and Commerce as the most distinguished graduate in academics, leadership, and physical education. In 1978, Bob earned his MBA from the University of Utah. An Army Veteran, Bob served with the 82nd Airborne Division. He completed Jungle, Arctic, and Desert Warfare training. And he earned the Ranger tab, the Expert Infantryman Badge, and Senior Parachutist wings. Upon leaving military service, then-Captain McDonald was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.

Happy Wonder Wednesday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Looking Back On My Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast. Today, I covered S1E6: Be Prepared, which aired on October 27, 2021. In this episode when Coach Long and Bill take the boys on a camping trip as part of their newly formed scout troop, their starkly different approaches to the outdoors show Dean that his father isn't good at everything. I really enjoyed this episode as we saw Bill totally out of his element in the woods, but he took on the role of Scout Leader for his son Dean, because it meant so much to him. I loved seeing Bill and Cliff (Coach Long and Corey's father) butt heads with each other even though Cliff was an Eagle Scout growing up and 1/16th Cherokee and knew the woods so much better. I found it hilarious that Bill basically broke the bank at the supply store with a start of the art tent which Bill tried and failed to put completely together even with Dean's help and instead of hotdogs Bill bought freeze dried beef stroganoff (apparently the same as what the astronauts eat, according to the supply store clerk), really it just looked like undigested oatmeal. Join me next week when I cover S1E7: Independence Day (Coincidentally the same title as the series finale of the original Wonder Years.), which aired on November 3, 2021. In this episode Bill comes up with a solution for Kim's car desires, but the solution is only pleasing to him; Dean is worried about seeming uncool when Clisby ends up chaperoning him and his friends. Have a great week everyone and as Bill William's (Dean's Dad) likes to say: Be Cool! To EMAIL The Podcast GO TO; lbomwonderyearspodcast@gmail.com

The Boy Scouts motto is "Be Prepared". I was a Boy Scout for about 3 months, actually I was a Webelos Scout, I guess that is the scout for the awkward stage between Cub Scout and Boy Scout. We would go to Kristian Wilkins house every Thursday and Kristian's dad, our Scout Leader, would give us all kinds of history and information for the Beatles, and let us know why they were the greatest band of all time. We never really learned how to "Be Prepared" when being attacked by a bear, or how to set up a tent, but I always enjoyed our lessons on the Beatles. Mainly I wonder what Kristian did with the 50 cent dues we brought every week before our Scout Pack folded after 3 months! ;-) There are so many things to be prepared for in this life, but nothing is more important than being prepared for Christ when he returns. This week we discuss the return of Jesus, and how we should "Be Prepared".

There are many forms of training within scouting. During this pandemic time, Scout leaders have been concentrating on their online learning. There is more to training than just online classes. many times there is training that needs in-person instruction or physical demonstrations. It would be very difficult to do Introduction to Outdoor Skills, Wood Badge, or NYLT all online. One of the nice benefits of Scouting that it's been around a very long time and everything is written down, so there is no need to reinvent the wheel. All training classes are continuously reviewed and updated. As we leave the pandemic lockdowns we need to dedicate ourselves to live training.

Sofa King Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2020 105:10

On this episode  of the world famous Sofa King Podcast, we talk some true crime and look at the life, murders, and death of Dean Corll. Called the Candyman or the Pied Piper, Corll had a reputation in Houston for giving candy to teenage boys from his family candy shop. He was loved by his community, and he didn’t seem to have anything in his background that was typical to trigger a serial killer. A divorce and some suppressed homosexuality were in his background, but none of the madness that usually forces one to kill. However, he became one of the most prolific killers, racking up at least 28 deaths in his time. Oh, and he had two teenage accomplices. Corll was raised by middle class parents and moved around a bit since his father was in the military. His folks divorced, remarried, divorced again. His mom eventually took the advice of a traveling pecan salesman (like you do) and started a candy company in her garage. A teenaged Corll worked there after school, and it eventually became big enough to move to a proper factory. Corll was drafted during Vietnam but served stateside as a radio repairman. He was discharged early on the grounds of family hardship since he needed to run the factory. Once home again, he put a pool table in the back of the factory and would often take batches of boys to the beach as a sort of “Scout Leader” persona. Eventually, the candy competition was too fierce, and the candy shop closed. Somehow in the year or so after this, he went from a model citizen to a maniacal sex crazed serial killer. He recruited two youths to help Dean Corll scout and bring him teenage boys for $200 a pop. They were David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley. They saw him as a father figure and thought that the sex that was happening with Corll and their recruits was consensual. At least at first. Eventually, the rape and murder started. And eventually, Henley and Brooks helped hide the bodies and got involved at every part of the killings. This one leaves a lot of unanswered questions. First off, what set Dean Corll off? He went from mild mannered to monster in merely months. Second, how did they get so many teenage boys to come over to the house? Jill Dennin seems to be everywhere and has played many roles in her mission as public servant. While Motherhood derailed her legislative ambitions for a "few" years, she's been busy: volunteering--for over 25 years as Girl Scout leader, as our coordinator for the Bear Fever community art project and Studio B Art Mobile scheduler, as substitute school teacher, as caregiver and Meals on Wheels driver, and Boyertown School District School Board Director for almost 8 years--just to name a few organizations that she served. Today she's campaigning for PA's State Representative. All labors of love. Tireless, dedicated, and knowledgeable from the "ground up," Jill cares about kids and families--first and always. Yup, I'm a fan! Visit JillforPA.com to learn more about her and become a fan too!

An unknowing Scout Leader came to town and lead a group of 6 boy scouts and went camping with them in the Dunlora woods, but strayed too close to the property and all hell broke loose after that.Belinda goes on to talk about the Ouija demon that is constantly contacted on through spirit board and automatic writing sessions, Zozo the Destroyer. ♫“Back to Gilwell O’Happy Land… I’m Going to work my Ticket if I can.”♫ Wood Badge is the highest level of adult Scout leader training available in the World. The first Wood Badge training was organized by Francis "Skipper" Gidney and lectured by Robert Baden-Powell and others at Gilwell Park in the UK in September of 1919. The first course in America was held at Schiff Scout Reservation in 1948. Scouters wanting to take the course must be fully position trained with current YPT. All levels of Scouts BSA are encouraged to take this high-level training. Wood Badge is set up as a 6-day course. One full week or two full weekends of training. After completing the course members of Troop 1 start working their “ticket” to complete the training. On completion, the Scouter is awarded the Gilwell Wood beads, neckerchief, and woggle. Warning, this is high-level training. I have seen it change peoples point of view of the world. Your critter and patrol members will become a special part of your scouting life.

Exempting Disabled Students from Safety Drills with Attorney James Sibley

The Safety Doc Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 29, 2019 95:05

Attorney James Sibley is a potent advocate for special needs students and their families fighting for fair treatment. In this episode of the Safety Doc Podcast, Attorney Sibley and host David Perrodin discuss the sprawling practice of limiting or exempting students with disabilities from school safety instruction, drills and access to threat reporting systems. James and David employ authentic stories that educators and parents will relate to in this vibrant discussion that is not about assigning blame and all about a more informed way for parents, educators and students to think about how to calibrate inclusive school safety. REASONS FOR EXEMPTING CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS FROM SAFETY INSTRUCTION. Attorney Sibley explains that educators think they are somehow "protecting" students with special needs by limiting their participation in safety drills. Many of these students present unique challenges during emergency situations and they shouldn't just be included in regular safety planning, there should be specialized safety plans in place for them. And, for those plans to be successful there needs to be preparation and practice. Dr. Perrodin adds that the hyper-realistic design of contemporary school intruder drills also prompts educators and parents to limit students with special needs from exposure to these types of drills. However, the question also arises of the appropriateness of these drills for all students and staff. Has the threshold of “reasonable” safety drills been crossed? LAWS FOR STUDENT SAFETY INSTRUCTION: IDEA and ADA. Attorney Sibley describes two of the primary laws that impact student safety instruction. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is a piece of legislation that ensures the approximately 8 million students with a disability are provided a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is tailored to their individual needs. Students with disabilities that receive special education or related services have a plan developed by the school team and parents to meet the needs of the child. That plan can, and should, include specific instruction and supports to ensure the student's safety is maintained during a crisis situation. The other significant piece of legislation addressed by Attorney Sibley is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). People commonly think of this in terms of ramped entrances and accessible bathrooms. However, he brought awareness to Chapter 7 Addendum 2: The ADA and Emergency Shelters: Access for All in Emergencies and Disasters identifies that one of the government's (including schools) primary responsibilities is to protect people during disasters and emergencies and to provide shelter that accommodates all persons, including people with disabilities. INCORRECT APPLICATION OF THE IEP PROCESS RELATIVE TO STUDENT SAFETY. First, you can't do something in the IEP that would violate the ADA. The IEP has a portion that includes testing accommodations and Attorney Sibley mentioned that as teams discuss this section it is sometimes incorrectly broadened to include participation in safety instruction. Ultimately, students can't be exempted from school safety instruction or drills for any reason. ASKING QUESTIONS IS THE WAY TO LEARN ABOUT A STUDENT'S SAFETY INSTRUCTION AT SCHOOL. Attorney Sibley believes much can be learned when parents adopt an inquiry-based approach to learning about their child's school safety instruction and participation in drills. He gave the example of the following questions a parent might pose to school staff: “Are these drills designed to increase and enhance the safety on the campus? And if the answer is yes, is there some reason that you don't want my child to be safe – as I want them to be safe and I assume you do, too.” WE UNDER-ESTIMATE THE POTENTIAL OF CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES DURING CRISIS SITUATIONS. Dr. Perrodin gave accounts of educators that exempted children with special needs from drills only because they anticipated that they would not perform well during the drill. In fact, the student had never been afforded the opportunity to demonstrate competency in the drill. Attorney Sibley added a story of when he was a Scout Leader and the Scouts, including some with disabilities, needed to respond to a rapidly rising river. Although the Scouts hadn't practiced for that specific scenario, they had practiced for unforeseen situations and also recognized a chain of command. They processed the flood without panic and, as Attorney Sibley underscores, students with special needs will surprise us with how well they can handle emergency situations.  FOLLOW DR. The Harold & Maudecast reviews SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, Now Streaming on Amazon Prime and other VOD services. Ben (Tye Sheridan), Carter (Logan Miller), and Augie (Joey Morgan), scout buddies for life, put their friendship to the test on the eve of their camp-out when they find themselves in the midst of a, yup, zombie apocalypse. After Ben and Carter abandon Augie to seek out cooler prospects at the cool kids party, Scout Leader Rogers (David Koechner) turns up zombie-fied as does much of the rest of the town. The boys gotta put their scout skills to the test to save the town. Luckily a hot but baddass cocktail waitress Denise (Sarah Dumont) is armed and ready to kick ass. Zombie purists will not like the liberties they've taken with the lore, we say, get over it. It's good campy fun with a few over the top scenes, that still made us laugh. And this film has some great action. Not so gory, not so PG13 either. It sits right in between hardcore zombie guts and glory and watered down for mainstream audiences horror/action. Cloris Leachman's performance as the bitch cat lady neighbor turned zombie is worth the price of admission. And big shoutout to Koechner who crushes it like the comedy pro he is as Scout Leader zombie who just won't die. 7/10 on our Justice and Doom Movie Meter. Jim Egan is the author of a revolutionary book.. The High School Graduates Owner's Manual .He spent a lot of time working with young people and observing what makes them tick before he decided to put that experience to work for high school students and their parents with the release of The High School Graduates Owner's Manual. Jim wore the uniform of a Scout Leader for 8 years as his son Jay went from Tiger Cubs through reaching the rank of Star Scout in the BSA.  Over the years, Jim served as a Den Leader, Cub Master, and Boy Scout Troop Leader.  Jim also served 10 years as the Co-President of the housing board for a fraternity in Madison, WI, and also as an advisor to fraternity members Jim's take: the time to be aware of many of the topics in the book were before huge mistakes were made shortly after high school due to lack of supervision, combined with a lack of experience/knowledge, and peer pressure from uninformed friends and influencers.  The idea for The High School Graduates Owner's Manual came next. The High School Graduates Owner's Manual will provide the Graduate with tips, shortcuts and clues to help make smarter decisions for the transition from adolescence to adulthood.   Please check out this website https://gradgiftnow.com/ to peruse the Chapter contents and the Chapter Summaries. Many aspects of grown-up life are examined, including investing, credit, college, reputation, giving back, and more. Jim also writes a blog for parents, available here https://gradgiftnow.com/blogs/news

Our Resident storyteller from South Bristol recently informed us that he was a Boy Scout troop leader when he lived in upstate New York a while back. When prompted to tell us about some of his experiences, we had the tape rolling, as it were. The statute of limitations about the exploits of his...challenging troop of boys has passed--we hope.
