From downtown uptown intown Toowoomba, the epicentre for the Darling Downs Radio Club. Right off the bat comes the important action item. If your watch tells you that today is Sunday 7 June, then hot-foot down to Bunnings Toowoomba North in Ruthven Street and help us make our BBQ fundraiser a brilliant success. We're there from now until 1530, and our sausage sangers are way more edible than RG8. Hi - I'm John VK4JPM Secretary of the Club, and I'm here to invite you to COME ON DOWN because THE PRICE IS RIGHT! Seriously, your warm body at Bunnings can help us in at least three different ways: we might still need a person or two to help with the roster. Hard to tell right now because QNEWS is filed days ago. But look, a bit of extra help never hurt. we definitely want you to buy a sausage sanger or two, and the price IS right! * when you turn up, you can smile and help tell everyone what a great club the Darling Downs Radio Club is. There's nothing like a personal recommendation. Sunday 7 June from 0800-1530 local time, which is most likely today if you're listening to the morning live broadcast. Tomorrow night is our club meeting, and we're doing something both important and special. Firstly, we're meeting at the Guide Hut in Harristown. Hut makes it sound way smaller than it really is. This is a bit of a test and we'd like your input. Three important items on the agenda for the meeting 1. we're bringing some of the stuff that has been gathered, and we'll be selling it on the night. There will be a couple of pretty good ICOM transceivers, some mixed electronics, cables, and whatever else we pull out of the storage space. Plus you can bring your own gear to add to the sales effort. 2. it's time we had a discussion about future plans for the club. All good, but your committee thinks it would be helpful to have a one, two, five and ten year outlook so that we can make strategic decisions on your behalf. What do you think the club should look like in five years? What activities would we regularly be doing? Is the monthly meeting format the right way to go? What education and training should the club deliver, and how often? What would your ideal meeting topic be? These and more questions need answers, and it's your club so we can go in any direction that you can support. and 3. bring along your latest toys for show-and-tell. Always fun. We'll have tea, coffee, timtams, and lots of good cheer. It's at the Guide Hut at 18A Memory Street in Harristown, with tons of parking. And if your street memory isn't so good, check out all the details at the website: ddrci.org.au and click through the calendar entry for the meeting. VK4RDD is located southeast of Toowoomba on a high spot. Output frequency 146.750 with -600kHz transmit offset and no tone (although CTCSS won't hurt). This is Kevin VK4UH. With Glenn VK4GMI I am the manager for the Harry Angel Memorial 80m Sprint. The “Harry Angel” is an annual 80m contest event, first established in 1999, to commemorate the life of Harry VK4HA who at the time of his becoming a Silent Key, at the age of 106, was the oldest licensed amateur in Australia. The contest has three sections, Phone, CW and Mixed. Certificates are awarded to the three top-scoring entries in each section. Place winners are also eligible to claim points towards the WIA Peter Brown Contest Champion Trophy. This year 36 logs were received which represents a consistent participation rate over recent years. This is particularly gratifying as this year's contest clashed with the WIA AGM and Conference in Albury and a number of other significant sporting events on the same weekend..

Inclusive design addresses among other things the needs of particularly vulnerable user groups. Through this, concepts are developed that are beneficial for a much wider range of users by incorporating additional sense and creating more holistic experiences. Alexandra Verdeil is a specialist for inclusive design at tactile studios. In this episode, we discuss the specific paradigms, methods and goals of inclusive design taking tactile studio's projects as examples. We have a look at various applications and challenges and deep dive into tactile studio's speciality – museum and exhibition design. If we imagine a truly regenerative museum in the future, what might it feel like to walk into that space? We recorded a series of episodes for a special series of Museums and Chill – The ICOM Podcast from ICOM Dubai 2025, a moment where museum thinkers come together to reflect on the role of museums in a changing world. This episode engages with two of the Conference's key sub-themes: New Technologies and Intangible Heritage. As museums navigate rapid technological transformation alongside shifting social, environmental, and demographic realities, questions around innovation, responsibility, and cultural continuity are becoming increasingly central. This conversation explores how museums can embrace new technologies to enhance creation, preservation, learning, and engagement, while safeguarding the integrity and authenticity of intangible heritage. It reflects on how institutions can integrate digital advancement thoughtfully, not only to improve operations and audience experiences, but to ensure that living traditions, knowledge systems, and cultural expressions remain meaningful and resilient within rapidly evolving communities.Every three years, museum professionals gather at the ICOM General Conference to listen, to question, and to exchange ideas. Across these conversations, we explore how museums are evolving, how responsibilities are shifting, and how culture continues to connect communities around the world.Join us while we discover how regenerative thinking goes beyond reducing impact, toward restoring ecosystems, strengthening communities, and reshaping institutional mindsets with Adib Dada. This episode's guestAdib Dada is an internationally recognized regenerative advisor, environmental architect, and founder of theOtherDada (tOD), an advisory and architecture practice, pioneering nature-based design rooted in biomimicry and systems thinking. His work bridges architecture, ecology, and art to regenerate cities and restore biodiversity, advancing a new paradigm where the built environment develops into a living system for all of Life to thrive. This episode's hostAnapaula García Soto is a Communications Coordinator at the International Council of Museums Secretariat in Paris, and producer and host of the ICOM podcast Museums and Chill. She works on editorial and storytelling initiatives highlighting diverse museum perspectives. She holds a B.A. in Communication and Digital Media and a Master's degree in Creative Project Management, Culture and Design.DisclaimerThe views and opinions expressed by our podcast's guests are their own and do not reflect the opinions or views of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and its bodies and entities. Was macht sie richtig?

Foundations of Amateur Radio When you start the process of getting your hobby off the ground, either for the first time, or after a hiatus, you might be left with the impression that the only way to "do amateur radio" is to have a shack, a place where you can set-up your gear, and connected to that gear using coax, one or more antennas. While that's a common scenario, it's not the only one at your disposal. We are after all in the game of communication and over the past few decades options have exploded. Starting closest to the traditional radio, coax and antenna, is to consider indoor antennas. There's many to choose from. You can install one in the same room as your shack, or, you can build your antennas in the roof space, either way, invisible from the outside can sometimes be a requirement. Stealth is a topic all its own, and no doubt we'll get to that another time. A word of caution. If you do have an indoor antenna and associated coax, consider your transmitter power levels, since it's likely that given the close proximity, you'll exceed emissions safety standards, or you'll cause harm to other electronic equipment in the building. QRP or low power is a good way to go if this is something you're considering. If we step away from a traditional radio, coax, antenna configuration, you can build your shack in other ways too. For example, you can use a local repeater which you might trigger from a local handheld radio. Often dismissed as being for local communications only, there are thousands of repeaters across the globe offering a variety of bands, frequencies and modes. Often you can access a local repeater that can be connected to a remote one using a bewildering array of technologies, some using the internet, some using traditional RF. You'll find repeaters on 10m, 6m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm. There's nothing stopping you making your own repeater. You don't even need to go through the effort of making it completely standalone, for example, my Yaesu FT-857d has a detachable face-plate or head, connected to the main body by a short cable. There are plenty of other radios with a similar configuration. Presumably designed for the installation in a vehicle, where the head needs to be near the driver and there's unlikely to be space for the body, you can run a longer cable from the head to the body and install it somewhere more convenient. In my case it was bolted underneath the removable floor into the boot next to the spare tyre. There's several solutions that replace the connecting cable with an internet connection. Now, that internet connection can be across the room, from inside your shack to your garage, or between your shack and a remote hill where you have permission to put up a bit of gear. In fact, the same type of setup can be used to connect to shared radios, and companies like Elecraft, Flex Radio and ICOM make specific remote heads that can operate remote radio equipment, marketed as RF decks, without needing to install and maintain computers at either end, but more often than not, this equipment is brand or model specific. Which raises another option. You can connect to remote equipment across the internet using your computer, which means that your shack might be a computer, a laptop, or a mobile phone and your gear might be in a different country. Many radio clubs have discovered that their often extensive radio shack is virtually unused during the week, and have installed remote equipment to allow you as a member to connect, sometimes as part of your membership, sometimes with an extra fee, since there are costs associated with setting this up and keeping it running. At some point you're going to discuss this with other amateurs and you're potentially going to hear someone tell you that this is not "real radio". Considering over a century of radio evolution, from spark-gap through valves, transistors, integrated circuits and software defined radio, where exactly is the "real radio" line drawn? Is using WSPR, RTTY, FT8, Hellschreiber, Olivia, SSTV, PSK31, Domino, MFSK and thousands of other digital modes "real radio"? If the answer to that is an emphatic "yes", then ask yourself, how do you actually use those modes? The answer looks suspiciously like a computer running digital mode software, either connected to a physical radio in the same room, or connected to one across the internet. In other words, with the proliferation of communication alternatives, amateur radio is evolving. No doubt it will evolve further. So, today, a perfectly viable, and some might say, modern, amateur radio shack might not actually have any traditional RF based radio gear, though perhaps a hand-held might be something to consider when you next treat yourself, not because without it you're not a real amateur, but because it opens your world to other means of communication, something which I think is perhaps even more important than building the perfect shack. In other words, you are not required to have a shack to be a radio amateur, it's just that it brings with it another dimension of engagement and activity. Speaking from personal experience, I miss my functional shack, but it's evolving, so there's that. Next time I'll take a look at antennas, stealthy or otherwise. I'm Onno VK6FLAB

This is part 1 of a 3 episode series. Part Episode 1: Personal Journey & Church History Get early access to all of the 2025 RENEW Gathering Breakout Tracks: https://reallifetheologypodcast.supercast.com/ Visit RENEW.org for great resources on Disciple Making and Theology. Today's episode will help us understand the journey, challenges, and vision of Black Christian leaders as they build community, overcome obstacles, and create a more inclusive future for their churches. This episode centers on a hosted gathering of African American members of Christian churches, led by Lamont Francis, senior pastor of Delta Bay Community Church. The session's primary aim is to foster a nationwide network and fellowship among Black Christian leaders, addressing both the challenges and opportunities unique to their communities. Lamont Francis opens by sharing his personal journey, beginning with his upbringing in San Francisco's Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Raised by a single mother in a lower socioeconomic environment, Francis's early life was marked by resilience and faith. His academic path took him from the projects to Pepperdine University, where he experienced a significant cultural shift and met his first Black professor, Dr. David G. Holmes. This mentorship inspired Francis to consider ministry, though his initial ambitions were in media and entertainment. Francis recounts his formative years in ministry, starting in Bakersfield, California, where he learned humility and servanthood by performing tasks like driving the church van before being allowed to preach. This experience taught him the importance of knowing and serving the congregation before assuming leadership. Eventually, he returned to the Bay Area, taking on ministerial roles in small congregations and navigating the complexities of church leadership as a young, unmarried man. A pivotal moment in Francis's journey was his congregation's displacement due to racial tensions and resistance to integration within predominantly white Churches of Christ. After being asked to leave a shared church space, his group moved through various temporary locations before ultimately purchasing the very building from which they had been expelled. This full-circle moment underscored both the challenges and triumphs of Black congregations seeking stability and autonomy. The episode delves into the broader context of Black churches within the Restoration Movement, highlighting the isolation and legalism experienced within the Churches of Christ. Francis describes the difficult decision to leave this fellowship, motivated by a desire for greater inclusivity, growth, and freedom in worship practices. The transition to the Independent Christian Church was facilitated by connections with leaders like Gary Shear and organizations such as the Solomon Foundation, which provided support and a sense of belonging. Francis also addresses the lack of representation and support for Black congregations at national Christian conventions, such as ICOM, and the need for spaces where their voices and histories are recognized. He recounts efforts to build networks and host rallies focused on urban service and fellowship among Black Christians, though these initiatives faced challenges and eventual decline. A recurring theme is the importance of documenting and preserving the rich history of African American involvement in the Restoration Movement, particularly within Independent Christian Churches. Francis calls for the creation of resources, websites, and books to ensure this legacy is not forgotten. The episode concludes with a vision for the future: building a nationwide fellowship that honors the past while addressing contemporary needs, fostering unity, and creating opportunities for growth and leadership among Black Christian communities.

This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Hello, again. This is Trey. Welcome to part 3 in my Cheap Yellow Display (CYD) Project series. You can find Part 1 in episode 4472 and Part 2 in episode 4488. We previously left our handy hero searching for a solution to an amateur radio signal propagation dilemma, while he is trying to become proficient with Morse code. The CYD technology is simmering in the back of his brain – an answer in search of a problem. Hah! I love trying to create the feel of a vintage radio or television series with the intro and outro for these episodes. But I am by no means the hero. I am simply Trey – a grumpy old man and tinkerer. Instead, the real hero in this episode is Keith VE3SVQ-THE SHAKY KEY on YouTube. So.... Let's see. Where were we? Oh yes. I have been trying to learn Morse code -.-. --.- -.-. --.- (CQ CQ) That was me, tapping out "CQ CQ" in Morse code using the practice set I keep on my desk. This consists of a set of code paddles, connected to an Arduino Nano, which I built several years ago based what I learned watching Code Practice Oscillator; Aka: The Three Arduinos on Jmhrvy1947's YouTube Channel, and based on the code from his GitHub https://github.com/jmharvey1/ArduinoCPO . I did need to make modifications, both to support the Ardunio Nano on which I chose to run it, and for my own sanity, as the way that I learned to write code for Ardunio is very different. I focus on readability and flexibility. You can see these changes on my own GitHub ( https://github.com/jttrey3/PracticeOscillator/blob/main/PracticeOscillator.ino ) Anyway, I have been studying. I have been watching videos. I have been practicing. I might actually be learning some of this stuff. If you are interested in more details about the resources I am using, leave a comment for this episode, or drop me an email using the address in my profile, and I may record an episode about it. The result is that I have been learning. But also, the google and YouTube algorithms have been learning about me. And they have started to feed me more videos about Morse code. It is both helpful, and super creepy at the same time. So one day, when I opened YouTube, a title in my feed caught my eye. " NEW CW OP USE THE REVERSE BEACON NETWORK TO IMPROVE YOUR CODE ". I said to myself, "Self, this could be interesting." I watched Keith's video and learned about the Reverse Beacon Network . According to their website, "The Reverse Beacon Network (RBN) is a revolutionary new idea. Instead of beacons actively transmitting signals, the RBN is a network of stations listening to the bands and reporting what stations they hear, when and how well." Let's pause for a second and discuss amateur radio beacons. These are stations which repeatedly broadcast their identity on dedicated frequencies. Other operators around the world, who hear a beacon, can evaluate the signal propagation between their station and the beacon location. The RBN is just the opposite. Here, the station operator can transmit a test signal with their call sign, using CW or other digital modes. Then, they can look at the RBN website to see which RBN listening stations received their transmission, and even get a signal report. On the main page of the RBN website, one can observe a world map with paths showing where signals were received, and where they originated based on the registered grid square of the originating call sign. The table displayed below the map reveals the sending and receiving call signs, their distance apart (In miles or kilometers), the frequency, the mode, the type of transmission, the signal to noise ratio, the speed of the transmission, and the time/date using UTC. This information is collected by a network of volunteer reverse beacon receiving stations all over the world, which monitor the various radio bands, decode transmissions of CW (Morse code), RTTY (Radio Teletype), and PSK31 or PSK63 (Digital modes using Phase Shift Keying). These receiving stations report what they receive as well as the signal strength back into the Reverse Beacon Network to be recorded and published over the internet. Dave Casler discussed the RBN back in 2016 on his YouTube video The Ham Radio Reverse Beacon Network, AD#32 . This gives very good detail of how the network works. This sounds like exactly what I have been looking for. All I need to do is come up with a way to reliably, accurately, and consistently transmit "CQ CQ CQ TEST DE" followed by my call sign three times at a constant 20 words per minute (WPM). If I can do this a few times, I can then check the RBN to see where I was received. By including the "TEST" string, recipients know that I do not wish to start a conversation. I can get accurate reporting of where my signal is going and how strong it is. But remember that my morse code skills are still inadequate. And my radios do not have "Keyer memories" like those which can be found in higher end transceivers like the Icom 7300, enabling programmed messages to be sent at the touch of a button. But there is a fairly inexpensive solution to this problem. One which has been nagging at the back of my mind. Maybe, I could use the Cheap Yellow Display to effectively add "Keyer memory" to any of my radios by simply plugging it in to the code key input port. These stored messages could be transmitted by simply touching their specific icon on the touch screen. Now we have a plan. But how will we do it? What else will we need to learn? Will it even work? Tune in to the next episode in the series to find out the answers to some of these questions and more! Provide feedback on this episode.
