Happy Feast of St. Vincent de Paul! If you've been a listener for awhile, you know that means it's time for the new season to begin! Welcome to season SEVEN!To kick off the season, we have Sister Theresa Sullivan, DC. Sister Theresa is the Director of Daybreak, a ministry of Depaul USA, that operates as a day resource center for those experiencing homelessness in the area. Sister Theresa is the third director of Daybreak and our very own Sister Elizabeth Greim, DC, just so happens to have been the first. Between the two of them, we hear all about the founding of Daybreak and just how much it's grown since it's founding in 2011. Between adding new buildings and gaining the support of the whole community, it's clear there's been a lot of love poured into this ministry!

A couple weeks ago, as I was scrolling around on Instagram, I saw photos from the recent grand opening of The Bridge Cafe in downtown San Luis Obispo. This isn't just any eatery, though. In collaboration with the Cuesta College Culinary Arts Foundation, The Bridge Cafe is a social enterprise, providing culinary training and employment for people who have previously been incarcerated. As I looked at these photos, one face stood out amid the crowd, beaming with a little extra light. Turns out it was the face of Sister Theresa Harpin, Executive Director of the organization Restorative Partners, which helps people move from inside the justice system to outside it, and which oversees the administration of The Bridge Cafe. Theresa is a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet, a Catholic congregation begun in 1650 around a kitchen table in France. She is kind, articulate, and her clear-eyed way of seeing the world is positively infectious. Listen to Sister Theresa talk about growing up in the Carl's Jr. family, how she decided to become a nun, her work inside the justice system, and how she dreamed about establishing The Bridge Cafe eight years before it became a reality. Sister Aletheia was profiled by the NY Times in “Meet the Nun Who Wants You to Remember You Will Die” reviving the Memento Mori movement. Memento Mori is the practice of intentionally thinking about our own death as a means of appreciating the present and living a better life now. Sister Aletheia's path to the convent was anything but conventional. She was a rebellious atheist who loved punk rock and spent her 20s volunteering, then working in Bay Area tech before finding her way back to the church. Her Catholic order - the Daughters of St Paul - are known as the #medianuns for their use of social media (even TikTok!) and other modern tools to spread the gospel. Sister and I talked about our society's avoidance of death, her ongoing wrestling match with God when it comes to the world's suffering, and why reflecting on death isn't a morbid affair, but a healthy and healing practice that can help us accept the inevitable with hope. "Social media can be addictive. There is so much darkness online. That's the difficulty of my religious order's charism of being in the middle of media. In this chapter, Jillian and Jerry are placed in the very awkward position of analyzing the nutritional nature of celery and peanut butter. Also, we try to figure out if the director knows the difference between tough guys and punks. No? I didn't think so. Also we tackle the serious subject of stalking, obsession and candy clowns. I had a wonderful conversation about friendship recently with Sister Theresa that I’m so excited to share with you. It’s such a grace to talk about this very important topic with wise women, and we hope you enjoy listening in to our podcast! Sr. Theresa Aletheia Noble, FSP is a former atheist who, thanks to the grace of God, has returned to the faith she was raised in and now tries to help others bring their loved ones back to the faith. A few years after returning to the Church, she heard God calling her, so she left her job in Silicon Valley to join the Daughters of St. Paul. She is the founder of the Memento Mori project and author of The Prodigal You Love: Inviting Loved Ones Back to the Church. She now lives in Boston where she serves at the Pauline Publishing House in the Editorial Department. “Reflecting on death is not a morbid affair,” believes Sister Theresa Aletheia, “it is a healthy and often healing practice that helps us accept the inevitable with hope.” Sister Theresa is a self-proclaimed #MediaNun with the Daughters of Saint Paul and the founder of the Memento Mori Project, an online revival in which she offers daily reflections about death. This week, we talk to Sister Theresa about her faith journey and why Catholics should imagine their deaths, especially during Advent. Inspired by Blessed James Alberione, the founder of her order, Sister Theresa placed a ceramic skull on her desk and began tweeting about memento mori, Latin for “remember you will die,” in 2017. She says it’s impossible to value life without paying proper attention to what it means to die, and that the practice has enabled her to be more present in her daily life. In Signs of the Times, investigators in Texas executed a search warrant at the offices of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, headed by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, following complaints from survivors on how DiNardo and his staff handled their abuse allegations. In a soon to be published book, Pope Francis is quoted as saying that he is worried about homosexuality in the priesthood. Catholic priests in England and Wales received new identification cards. Finally, we discuss Pope Francis’ thoughts on consumerism: “Consumerism is a great disease today. I am not saying that we all do this, no. But consumerism, spending more than we need, is a lack of austerity in life; this is an enemy of generosity.” How should we reflect on these words during the Christmas season? Jennifer Fulwiler talks to Sister Theresa Noble, a former atheist who is now a nun. Their discussion about how to talk to nonbelievers about faith takes a turn for the interesting when Sister Theresa points out that Catholics shouldn't be afraid of doubt. She opens up about how she's a "natural doubter," and offers tips for other believers who occasionally wonder if God even exists at all.
