Beau Martonik sits down with Bill Vanderheyden of Iron Will Outfitters — 10 years of engineering broadheads and arrow systems built around what a setup actually needs to do when conditions are not perfect. They open with Bill's Colorado elk hunt — 10 miles back in the wilderness, a 4-hour chase into dark timber, and a frontal shot at 30 yards through a 3-inch window in the pines. From there the conversation gets into the science behind why that shot worked and what most hunters are getting wrong before they ever get to a moment like that. Topics include what actually makes a bow setup forgiving in hunting conditions, why FOC doesn't tell you what most people think, the physics of penetration and the speed vs. heavy arrow debate, why mechanicals on elk are a bigger risk than most realize, steep shot angles, effective range, and how to practice the shots that actually show up in the field. 00:00:00 – Intro 00:04:37 – Colorado Elk Hunt — 10 Miles Back, Frontal Shot Through the Pines 00:21:41 – Pin Setup and Shot Confidence in the Field 00:24:24 – Bighorn Sheep Hunt — Steep Cliffs, No Rangefinder, 55 Yards 00:34:10 – What Actually Makes a Hunting Setup Forgiving 00:44:42 – Penetration Physics — Momentum, Arrow Flight, and Blade Geometry 00:57:13 – Why Mechanicals on Elk Are a Risk Most Hunters Underestimate 01:02:29 – FOC — What the Number Actually Tells You and What It Doesn't 01:10:15 – Whitetail vs. Western Setup — How Much Actually Needs to Change 01:14:20 – Moving Deer and Shot Timing 01:25:05 – Steep Shot Angles — Tree Stand and Mountain Scenarios 01:32:55 – Holding Under Pressure and Practicing Real Scenarios 01:41:21 – Effective Range — How to Actually Define It for Your Setup 01:47:42 – The Iron Will Wide Broadhead on Elk 01:51:36 – Axis Deer Hunt in Hawaii — Setup Considerations 01:54:58 – Closing + Where to Find Iron Will Instagram: @eastmeetswesthunt @beau.martonik Facebook: East Meets West Outdoors Shop Hunting Gear and Apparel: https://www.eastmeetswesthunt.com/ YouTube: Beau Martonik - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQJon93sYfu9HUMKpCMps3w Partner Discounts and Affiliate Links: https://www.eastmeetswesthunt.com/partners Poncho Outdoors - Poncho Outdoors makes tough, sharp-looking, no-BS apparel for hardworking outdoorsmen who put in the time year-round. In This Episode Most business owners don't actually own a business—the business owns them. David Finkel believes systems are the key to changing that reality. In this episode, Adi Klevit interviews David Finkel, CEO of Maui Mastermind, about how entrepreneurs can scale companies that are not overly dependent on the founder. David shares his personal journey from Olympic athlete to entrepreneur, explaining how his early businesses were built largely through hard work and force of will before he learned how to create scalable systems that reduced owner reliance. Adi and David dive deep into why systems are essential for growth. David introduces a powerful analogy comparing businesses to an old house: systems that worked for a small company often fail once the business grows and additional demands are placed on them. Formalizing and documenting systems allows leaders to identify inefficiencies, streamline operations, and create consistency across the organization. The conversation also explores the often-overlooked challenge of implementation. David explains that fixing a process is only the first step. Through his "FOC" framework—Fix, Operationalize, and Culture—he emphasizes that leaders must continue reinforcing new systems long enough for them to become part of the company culture. Without that reinforcement, businesses end up solving the same problems repeatedly. Adi and David also discuss AI and automation, agreeing that while AI is an incredibly powerful tool, it cannot replace strategic thinking, leadership, or the nuanced expertise required to build exceptional businesses. Instead, AI should be viewed as a partner that enhances execution while business owners continue driving the vision and direction.

Todays Episode I get to talk to Dave Wielgosz as he brings us the revenge tale Showdown for Ignition Press. As a Editor for DC Comics for over 10 years and also has had the chance to intern at both Marvel and DC, jumping into the writers chair was always in the cards. In this book, Trish Sullivan returns to her hometown with a goal in redeeming the man who she says is to blame for her younger brother's death. Harvey Harlowe is just reeling from the death of his father, so grief is playing deep in the minds of them both. What takes place in this setting of a small town where you can't escape your past even for a second is a Mano y Mano psychological battle until a final means to end for one, the other, or maybe them both. In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitchell is joined by Chris Romano for a deep and wide-ranging conversation that starts with fatherhood and quickly transitions into the evolving world of archery and bowhunting. From raising young kids and introducing them to the outdoors to sharing moments through music and everyday life, the discussion highlights how hunting often intersects with the bigger picture of family, growth, and passing on tradition. It's a relatable look at how priorities shift over time, and how the outdoors continues to play a meaningful role through every stage of life. The conversation then dives headfirst into the science of arrow flight — breaking down everything from arrow spine and FOC to drag, vane configuration, and real-world performance on animals. Chris shares his journey down the “rabbit hole” of optimizing archery setups, challenging conventional thinking and exploring how modern equipment and deeper understanding can improve both accuracy and effectiveness in the field. More than just a technical discussion, this episode emphasizes education over ego, encouraging hunters to understand their equipment, question assumptions, and continually strive to become more ethical and effective in their pursuit. Jace takes a look at the first three issues of D'Orc from Image Comics, breaking down the story, humor, and overall execution to evaluate whether the book's rapid rise in the aftermarket is supported by the actual reading experience. With discussion of the creative work from Brett Bean, Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and Nate Piekos, the episode examines the structure of the first three issues, the use of familiar fantasy elements, and how the tone balances cartoon-style violence with comedic intent. The conversation also explores how low initial orders, FOC attention, and social media momentum contributed to the book's visibility, along with whether that attention reflects long-term value or short-term demand. A comparison is made to a key past fantasy humor comic to provide additional context for how a similar concept performed over time.

“Do you see?” We never imagined discussing an Event Horizon comic on the podcast, but the moment the notion was floated, we were enthralled. The original 1997 movie, directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, struck a chord back in the day, but it was also a movie that was obviously jumbled about and fumbled in the editing room. And since the story relied on the device of a spaceship lost in a black hole/literal hell for decades, it so easily allows for prequel expansion. All that's required are the perfect creators to expand the material. Maybe even mend some of it. Christian Ward and Tristan Jones are the perfect creators for Event Horizon. If you've read their work, especially Ward's time on Batman: City of Madness and Jones' time on Aliens, you're probably already subscribed to the new prequel series from IDW Publishing. Event Horizon: Dark Descent tells the story of the original starship crew who ignited the Gravity Drive, popped into the space between spaces, and found their damnation in the abyss. It's always a pleasure to have Christian Ward on the podcast, but this week, that's especially true because we're all geeking out about the original movie, discussing how it influences all of his work, and why prequels are a damn good narrative delivery system. Yes, we talk about trauma and therapy, but also demons and personifying hell in the most joyful comic booky fashion. Event Horizon: Dark Descent is the best book you didn't expect in 2025. Let's all go to hell together. Event Horizon: Dark Descent is written by Christian Ward, illustrated by Tristan Jones, colored by Pip Martin, and lettered by Alex Ray. Variant Covers by Jeffrey Alan Love. Issue 1 is now available from IDW Publishing, and FOC for Issue 2 is Today (9/1/25). Call your shop and get subbed. Also, continue this conversation with Christian Ward by visiting his Website and following him on Blue Sky and Instagram. The wise King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes that a triple braided cord is not easily broken, and there are three biblical strands — three threads — that we’re going to weave together: the need for devoted servant leaders, the power of hope, and the ways we’re called to care for the crushed and broken around us. This week, we’re bringing these three things together to launch a new ministry focus for Covenant Life called the Hope Initiative. Together, we will explore ways to help widows, orphans, the elderly and those in poverty by providing opportunities and experiences that can serve as the breeding ground for hope.

Everyone has a Batman opinion. Inside your imagination is a definitive Batman: a Batman who should behave this way, and a Batman who should not behave that way. Your tight grip on your Batman is why Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's carefully considered Absolute Batman works so damn well. They fully understand and appreciate how the character has congealed over the last eight decades into a rock-solid idea. For the last eight months, alongside collaborators like Gabriel H. Walta, Marcos Martín, Frank Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles, Snyder and Dragotta have chipped away at the quintessential Dark Knight. They've altered elements of his origin, removed his social position, and rearranged his relationship with his rogues. Their Absolute Batman is a Bruce Wayne in motion, moving toward the impenetrable idea in your head, but struggling to match it. Here is a character growing into something, evolving into a recognizable hero for 2025. After confronting Mr. Freeze in issues seven and eight and facing the final days of Matches Malone, Bruce Wayne must reassess his war on Gotham City crime. What lessons did he learn from that awful day at The Zoo? Do his nights as Batman honor his father's sacrifice? As he fights to find himself, a grotesque demonic doppelganger appears - Bane, the nineties sensation who once broke a bat from another universe. FOC for Absolute Batman #9 is today (5/19/25)! Tell your retailers to order a copy for ya. With this comic, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have cooked an undeniable banquet. As the best alternate reality stories should, they've weaponized your knowledge of these characters against you, subverting in radically compelling ways, while delivering what should never be manipulated. Today's podcast features two conversations. Up first, Scott Snyder joins us for a lengthy look back at the last eight months of Absolute Batman. We discuss Bruce Wayne's continuing development into the Dark Knight, his complex relationship with Joe Chill, his father's killer, and why Bane had to arrive sooner rather than later. Secondly, Nick Dragotta pops in for a conversation about his ultra chonky Bane design, and how what we've seen so far is only a hint of his true monstrosity. Absolute Batman #9 will finally arrive in stores, courtesy of DC Comics, on June 11th. Follow Scott Snyder on Bluesky and Instagram, and subscribe to his Substack.
