Breht listens to, reflects on, and critically engages with a public lecture by the late philosopher Michael Sugrue titled Marcus Aurelius' Meditations: The Stoic Ideal. He discusses the philosophy of Stoicism, its insights as well as its limitations, its commodification and bastardization under late capitalism, the dialectical inversion of the philosophy of a Roman Emperor for proletarian revolutionaries, Virtue Ethics, Mahayana Buddhism and The Four Brahmaviharas, the importance of courage and discipline and responsibility, Momento Mori, the Cardinal Virtues, equipping ourselves mentally and emotionally for a lifetime of class struggle, seeking the balance of the Middle Path, Marxist Dialectics, and much more! Professor Sugrue passed away last year, and Breht has always found his free, public lectures on philosophy to be helpful and really well done. In the spirit of free and open access to education, Breht offers his knowledge of philosophy alongside this offering by Professor Sugrue. The use of this lecture series falls under the protections of the Fair Use doctrine. They delve into a story about a man who had to escape from a moving rollercoaster after his safety bar malfunctioned. The discussion then shifts to an light-hearted debate on whether religious music must contain lyrics. Next, they explore the fascinating 17 Hz tone experiment and address the serious impact of lead exposure on approximately 151 million people in the U.S. Wouldn't be a show without heavy metal for your filthy earballs! In this episode of BJJ Meditations, host Joe Hannan shares a personal narrative that intertwines health scares, the challenges of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and reflections on mortality. After an alarming eye exam leads to a series of medical evaluations, Joe contemplates the fragility of life and the importance of clarity in training. He discusses the emotional weight of injuries, particularly knee injuries, and how they force a confrontation with one's own limitations. Ultimately, Joe emphasizes the journey of becoming in Jiu Jitsu, highlighting the balance between love for the sport and the pain it can bring. Takeaways -- The importance of health checks and being proactive about health. -- Experiencing a health scare can lead to profound clarity. -- Training in Jiu-Jitsu can provide a sense of purpose. -- Injuries force us to confront our own mortality. -- The emotional weight of injuries can be overwhelming. -- Jiu-Jitsu is a journey of becoming, not a destination. -- Life continues, but the fear of missing out on training persists. -- The duality of Jiu-Jitsu: it can be both nurturing and destructive. -- Clarity in training can enhance performance and enjoyment. -- Jiu-Jitsu will always be there for those who love it. The Sound and The Fury is most commonly known as a hard rock band founded in 1995. The band featured Jeff Wood (guitar and vocals), Aaron Ogle (guitar), Jay Kassen (bass guitar and vocals), and Nathan Russel (drums). Three albums of existing music will remind you why TSATF were among the best working bands. Songs like “Armageddon's Parade”, “Millionaire Losers”, “Bullet Factory” and “Addiction” are the evidence! The band's music will once again overwhelm your senses, reminding you of what's missing in modern rock. There latest EP is titled Momento Mori. In today's episode, I am chatting with Jaime Jo Wright. Jaime is the author of ten novels, including her latest novel, Night Falls on Predicament Avenue. We had a wide ranging conversation on this episode from momento mori photography, fashions we hoped to never see again, which of her ten novels was her favorite to write as well as a sneak peek at the title of her next book coming April 2025. This was such a fun and delightful conversation, I hope you enjoy it too. Happy listening!

My conversation with guest Devin Moss was so rich and expansive, from our shared passion for the big existential questions to his rich and complex podcast series, Momento Mori (that dives deep into mortality), to his unexpected journey to becoming a Humanist Chaplain. He shares one of the most unique experiences of a bedside death I've ever heard. Soon after becoming certified Devin said yes to a request from an inmate on death row to have a non-theist chaplain accompany him in his final months on earth. Devin Sean Moss is a Humanist (nontheist) Chaplain unwavering in his pursuit to relate stories that connect us to our humanity. A natural explorer, he uses playful inquisition to examine the complexity of the human condition and the intrinsic meaning of life. Moss maintains an interdisciplinary practice of storytelling, street philosophy, and practical altruism. In 2015, Moss created The Adventures of Memento Mori podcast.. The consequence of this deep meditation on impermanence was life-changing. Uncertain of what happens after we die, Moss has dedicated his life to the positive changes that can happen while we're still alive. Momento Mori is a latin phrase that means, “Remember, you must die.” As a Christian should we be thinking about death? If so, why and does it make us overly morbid? And should I get a skeleton? History says, it might be a good idea. Today I'm discussing all this and more. Show Notes: sheprovesfaithful.com/podcast/spf225 Support $5 a Month: patreon.com/sheprovesfaithful

Dr. Corey Wilks is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Executive Coach, writer, and entrepreneur with over 15 years of psychological experience. After seeing so many people—patients, friends, and family—struggle to build their life around doing meaningful, purpose-driven work that fulfilled them, he started writing online to help people get more out of life through understanding and applying practical concepts from psychology. He now coaches entrepreneurs, content creators, and other driven individuals, and creates content to help people be more intentional with how they live, work, and create. In this episode, Corey and I discuss: Why and how he transitioned from clinical psychology coaching (and the difference between the two). The "Four Horseman of Fear"—fear of failure, ridicule, the unknown, and success—and how these get in the way achievement and pursuing meaningful work. Other self-limiting behaviors like perfectionism and self-sabotaging. Fear inoculation (building up "immunity" to what we're afraid of). "Side hustles" and the strategy of exploring one side hustle per month. Creating a "category of one"—the place where our interests, skills, and needs overlap. 4 year old Charley Ross and his 6 year old brother Walter had been playing in front of their home on a hot July morning in Germantown, Philadelphia, when they were approached by a horse and buggy driven by two strange men. The men offered them candy, and then came back the next day, and the next, slowly building the boys' trust in them before abducting little Charley. As I say repeatedly in this case, there are so many questions in this case and I definitely feel like I have more questions than answers. Don't forget to let me know your thoughts and theories on this case - I go back and forth on mine! I hope you enjoyed today's historical, bonus mini-sode and I will be back soon with another exciting case. Stay safe! Death has been with us since the beginning. In the Old Testament of the bible, we read stories of the Patriarchs living up to 900 years. In the Cuneiform tablets we read dates and records of Kings ruling for thousands of years. And in the Baghavad Gita we learn that the duration of the lifetime of a human in the Staya Yuga is around 100,000 years. Humans have been aware of life and death for hundreds and thousands of years and yet so many people still fear death and the unknown. Todays guest is Juan Acencion - creator of the Leo Method or Life Energization Optimization. The L.E.O. Method is a tool comprised of specific inner energy techniques. These techniques will help you to organically align, clarify and increase your energies from within. Juan wanted to talk about Fear, Death and I wanted to talk about Memento Mori and Freemasonry and this episode is the result. How do we connect all of this to Freemasonry? Listen and find out. And not to mention Masons do have a certain liking to a certain lion. Follow me on Instagram @Masonicmuscle357 or write to me with your questions, comments or ideas for topics. Are you loving enough? It's a hard question to ask ourselves. And often, it's a question we aren't asking ourselves until something tragic happens. In this episode, Lorissa shares some personal insights from the recent illness of her husband and the loss of his father and how reflecting on death can sometimes help us experience clarity in how we truly want to live.
