Suz and Doug remember the classic 60's TV show "That Girl" with Marlo Thomas on this episode of "On the Town with Suz and Doug". (dougmilesmedia)
One of the titans of early tv sitcoms, as well as a massively successful producer, singer, and philanthropist, Danny Thomas earned his stripes as a radio comedian (especially on The Bickersons) in the 1940s, then hosted his own radio variety show, then in the early 1950s jumped to television and began his classic show "Make Room for Daddy". After that, while Danny would continue to make tv and stage appearances (including a 1970's reboot called Make Room for Granddaddy), he also conquered the tv production world with shows including The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mod Squad, and That Girl (starring real-life daughter Marlo Thomas). Closest to Danny's heart, though, was the word he did to establish the world-famous St. Jude Children's Medical Center, the result of a promise a young and struggling Danny made to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of lost causes. As always find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Danny Thomas? A signature theme song was a must for early tv stars -- think of The Honeymooners -- and Danny Thomas was no exception with this fine jazz version of the Irish classic Danny Boy. https://youtu.be/rAMrzvqU2RQ?si=RutT59t7anfOh3_J To get a feel for Danny's comedy style, here's a great full episode of Make Room for Daddy from season six, back before tv discovered the world was in color. https://youtu.be/sJjFeM9ZvbU?si=lGXBgUiHE9RvTDI_ Late in his career Danny would take the occasional guest spot, as he did in Happy Days in 1978. https://youtu.be/qWxNS202fV4?si=vZaFGX990ROP5vF0 As with may 1960s(ish) era tv stars, Danny was happy to be a pitchman when needed and this is a great example -- a Maxwell House Coffee ad. "A Muggy Day in Central Park" (November 14, 1968) A contemporary of Bewitched, That Girl aimed for a more sophisticated audience than most sitcoms of its era. Not only does it look more cinematic, in a way that sitcoms generally wouldn't until the 2000s, but it's also more clearly a feminist show, where Marlo Thomas plays a woman braving big city life on her own. This episode does that tired thing where gay men, cross-dressers, trans woman and drag queens are conflated down to a single thing, but it's nonetheless interesting to see how a progressive show handles queer things fairly explicitly in the 1960s. Listen to the Monday Afternoon Movie episode about the Ted Bessell thriller Scream, Pretty Peggy.
HOLIDAY GAUNTLET: HALLOWEEN! This week on Must Have Seen TV, Barb and Ethan talk about the That Girl episode "Secret Ballot." What's scarier: fending off a werewolf attack — or talking to your dad about politics?! How did Marlo Thomas vote in 1968? Was the '68 election the beginning of the end? That last part has little to do with That Girl, it's just existential dread. Send us a textIn this special edition of our podcast we look back in Memoriam to three people who passed away in August of 2024. They are our podcasts legal advisor, James Wiles, a retired lawyer who lived here in Myrtle Beach and was active in Republican Party Politics, working on several campaigns for Horry County Council, Myrtle Beach City Council, and Myrtle Beach Mayor, he also helped in a couple of congressional Races and he worked on the Presidential Campaign of Rick Santorum. He later became an advisor to this podcast, starting around our 30th episode and really gave us solid advice as we dealt with the series on Former President Richard Nixon. He was a good friend and will be missed. When we were running our series on Richard Nixon we often heard the voice of CBS Newsman Phil Jones, he covered the Watergate story and then seven more Presidents from Richard Nixon to George W. Bush before retiring in the early 2000s He passed away in late August at the age of 87. Finally, we look back at television talk show pioneer, Phil Donahue. He made our show for two very personal stories to us at this podcast. He had Rita Jenrette on his show and it was then , in prime time that our Congressman called in and made national news. It was an episode everyone in Myrtle Beach in that era always remembered. Then there is a love story like no other. When Phil Donahue met Marlo Thomas on his television show and it was love at first sight and on live television. Everyone watching could see the chemistry on full display. We should all be so lucky. They were married for 44 years and there was just as much chemistry between them in their last appearance on TV as there was in their first. It is one of our hosts favorite stories to retell. So, we let him tell it here on this episode again. Rest in Peace, James Wiles, Phil Jones, and Phil Donahue Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Another one of those mind bending podcasts. Today Jennifer Shaffer's mom stopped by to say hello, to give Jennifer a frequency or feeling for when she's around her. Then we invited Luana Anders, our moderator on the flipside (LuanaAnders.com) to tell us if anyone had made her guest list. Luana moderates our podcast from the flipside - as recounted in the book and film FLIPSIDE and HACKING THE AFTERLIFE it was after Luana's appearance on the Charles Grodin Show courtesy of James Van Praagh that I became aware that she not only still existed but could direct the conversation. About ten years ago, she began to help Jennifer and me access a group of individuals on the flipside that Luana knew over her career of doing 300 film and TV shows. Luana introduced me to Charles Grodin, a good friend who is godfather to our children (my wife and I). Charles was close friends with Phil Donahue, so I suspected that since Charles has shown up recently (there was a screening in NYC of a documentary about his life) I wondered if Phil was ready to chat about his life. Sometimes they aren't - if they've just crossed over and had a lifetime of not believing it was possible to do so. However, as Phil notes - Charles visited him often in his later years to pave the way. Jennifer didn't know that Phil's father in law was Danny Thomas, nor did she know that he had made a "promised with God" to find a way to help people if God could help him in his time of need. That's where St. Jude's hospital came from, and his daughter, Phil's wife Marlo Thomas carries on that giving tradition. I know both Phil and Marlo - my wife and family have been to their home in CT, and as noted, Phil took photos of us and gave the prints and frames to us as a gift when we left. I still have them in our home. Cherished gifts. Some things to note; I didn't say the name of Vivian Maier - most don't know who she is, but I asked him about Vivian and if she influenced him at all (years after her passing, it turned out she was a preeminent photographer and her photos are now world famous of life in Chicago.) Phil reports that her demeanor influenced him in his career. He also said that his son James was one of the people to greet him on the flipside. Perhaps the most uncanny moment is when I asked him about his father in law - and his promise to God. Not something Jennifer is or was aware of - and when she's done with her sessions, she "shakes it off" and forgets pretty much everything that is said. So if it comes up again, I'd have to remind her of the fact that Phil's father in law was one of the most famous television actors of the 50's and 60's, and that his wife was "That Girl" Marlo Thomas. As we all get older, the fame of those who were before becomes a matter of history. It was fascinating to hear Phil talk about his "many life reviews" - meaning he becomes aware of all of his previous lifetimes. When asked "how many" he said "more than you could comprehend." But notably, in one of them he recalled being "mute" or not able to speak or express himself. He obviously made up for that lifetime with his career of over 7000 television shows, for inventing the format of speaking directly to audiences, and hearing what they had to say. If one takes the time to read his bio, he was as generous as the day is long - but more importantly he wanted to say that Marlo was not only the love of his life, but he continues to love her from the flipside, and reminds her that the dreams she has of him - or feeling his hand in hers - that is actually him doing that. It's why we do this work. I hope this helps someone out there on the planet who has lost a loved one. They aren't gone. They just aren't here. Please visit Hacking the Afterlife on Youtube and subscribe. Lots of fun information there as well.

A look back at my interview with Marlo Thomas and the late great Phil Donahue.
We are continuing our summer tradition at Here's The Thing, where members of the staff select their favorite interviews from the archives. This week, we revisit Alec Baldwin's 2021 conversation with actress and activist Marlo Thomas, who has been breaking barriers for women for more than five decades. She first became a household name as Ann-Marie, the lead in the television show “That Girl,” a woman who, in the late 60s, wanted a career more than a family. An outspoken feminist, Marlo then launched “Free to Be...You and Me,” which was first an album, then a book, and eventually, an Emmy- and Peabody-award-winning TV show for children that challenged gender norms and became a touchstone for a generation of feminists. Her best-selling books include a memoir about growing up an adored daughter of TV star Danny Thomas. In 2020, she released a book, “What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life,” and a podcast, “Double Date,” with her late husband Phil Donahue. All in all, quite a life for That Girl.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Phil Donahue dead at 88 Hebrews 9:27 says, “It is appointed once for man to die and after that the judgment.” Iconic TV talk show host Phil Donahue, who hosted the Phil Donahue Show from 1967-1996, is dead at 88 years of age after a long illness, reports NBC News. He was a life-long Catholic, and “not a very good one,” in his own words. Phil Donahue interviewed atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair For 29 years, his daytime talk show pioneered an intriguing mix of serious topics, provocative guests, well-known celebrities, and questions from the audience members. In 1988, he interviewed atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Listen to his introduction. DONAHUE: “Mrs. O'Hair is probably the world's most famous atheist. She is certain that there is no God. Mrs. O'Hair, as you probably know, is singly responsible for one of the most controversial decisions in the history of the United States Supreme Court, the banning of the official reading of prayer in public schools.” Here's a soundbite from their dialogue. DONAHUE: “Now, this really bugs me, Madalyn.” O'HAIR: “I know it does.” DONAHUE: “See, you say, ‘I don't know how this all began.' And I say, ‘I want to know why, if you don't know how life began, how you're so certain there is no God.' To be consistent, I think you should say, ‘I don't know where life began, and I don't know if there's a God.' O'HAIR: “All right, let me finish it then, because, this is the thing. Since we don't know about this, since none of us know.” DONAHUE: “Know what?” O'HAIR: “How it began, or why, or when, or if it began at all. What we have to do is take all of the evidence. If we pile the evidence up, and all of the evidence of science -- and it's really massive -- is on one side, and on the other side is a book that we know, for the most part, when it was written and how it was written, etc. -- and this flies in the face of all of the other evidence, then you discard the book. You say, ‘It's no good.'” DONAHUE: “But discarding the book doesn't necessarily prove that there is no God. Let's talk about a higher being.” O'HAIR: ‘No, not a being.” DONAHUE: “What do you call it?” O'HAIR: “Some higher entity.” DONAHUE: “Alright, a higher entity. You are saying you don't know if there is one, aren't you?” O'HAIR: “That's right.” DONAHUE: “That's not atheism. That's agnosticism.” (O'Hair giggles) Donahue was married to Margaret Cooney, his first wife, for 17 years with whom he had five children. Then, Donahue married actress Marlo Thomas, his second wife, for 44 years. It's day one and the big moment tonight is expected to be when President Joe Biden passes the torch to Kamala Harris. While massive security efforts are keeping things under control inside the arena - there was already some chaos outside. And cops say he's a double offender - allegedly grabbing two girls, ages 15 and seven, and trying to force them into his car in kidnappings just an hour apart. It could have been much worse if not for a brave aunt who says she went into warrior mode. Plus, it's the interview from Blake Lively's past that is coming back to haunt her. Some are saying that she was very difficult during an interview years ago, the reporter says she almost changed careers! Now, Lisa Guerrero is speaking with that reporter at the receiving end of the actress now being called a “mean girl.” And legendary TV host Phil Donahue has died at 88. He was surrounded by family including his longtime wife, actress Marlo Thomas. Donahue was a trailblazer who changed the face of daytime talk shows to include audience participation. Greg Mullavey on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson When one of my life's heroes walks off the screen into the reals and supersedes all expectations, that's a home run. So goes it with Mary Hartman Mary Hartman's, Greg Mullavey. I got a taste interviewing him on the Zoom a few years ago, but this go ‘round witnessing him honoring his craft onstage at The Garry Marshall Theatre as Jules Feiffer, in The People VS Lenny Bruce, being eyeball to eyeball sans screens for the first after the show, sharing a warm hug, and culminating with this chat, a master class on auditioning, acting and keeping it real, on screen, on stage, and in life, well, wow! We talked Greg's early days, his pro-basball playing father, a Red Sox, a White Sox, who went on to coach the Dodgers, first in Brooklyn then in LA which got Greg to Hollywood and transitioned him from stage to screen and back again. A late bloomer, first appearing onstage in the Army post his philosophy degree, 100+ shows later from Broadway to stages across the country to Los Angeles, most recently reprising his role as King Lear, Off-Broadway, 25 years later, and hoping to do so yet again. We talked acting school - his cronies, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper, and Harry Dean Stanton, and how a certain someone scored an Easy Ride… his first TV role opposite Telly Savalas, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman––Louise Lasser, Norman Lear, Mary Kay Place, Dabney Coleman, Martin Mull, Fred Willard… Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice and how both went over with his folks… meeting Meredith MacCrae, their high profile marriage, his Broadway debut (the thrill), opposite Mia Farrow, co-starring off-Broadway with Marlo Thomas, iCarly and a new generation and his ongoing important theatrical collaborations with lawyer Martin Garbus and playwright Susan Charlotte shining a spotlight on human rights. We talked health, well-being, supplements, COVID, how he met Ariana, his partner of 25ish years, and why they made it legal. Greg's still starring on stage appearing on screen, coaching young actors, with no evidence of slowing down. And he's still learning lines - King Lear, for heaven's sake. I'll have what he's having! I adored Greg Mullavey before I met him - now getting to know this talented, whipsmart, inspiring, warm, kind, generous, compassionate man, I adore, more! Marlo is a trailblazer, her show "That Girl" was the first to portray a single career woman and paved the way for actresses to follow like Mary Tyler Moore, Murphy Brown and Moore. Hear how Marlo landed the role of "That Girl" and how she parlayed that into an amazing 45 year-career in TV, film and on Broadway.

Ep 089: In our meetings with retirees, they sometimes express to us that they feel lost. What previously gave them purpose in their career was no longer there and they sometimes lack motivation to get up, get out of the house, and embrace life. Questions such as “who am I?”, “What should I do with my time?” and “What next?” occupy their thoughts. So how do we go about answering these questions and finding ourselves in this next chapter? How do we reinvent ourselves now that we have time to do so? That's what this episode helps answer! Our next guest had a 37-year career as a probation officer. Since retiring, she has become an actress, author, public speaker, and blogger. She has appeared in television, film, commercials, theater, and print jobs. Her transition to becoming an actress in her senior years has been written about in Time Magazine, the Los Angeles Times newspaper, AARP, and in Marlo Thomas' 2014 book, It Ain't Over…Till It's Over, which profiles different women who have reinvented themselves. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Jeff Lieberman, Writer, Director, Producer, “BELLA! This Woman Belongs In The House” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Jeff Lieberman, is an award-winning journalist, producer and filmmaker whose documentary films have won him world wide acclaim. His 2013 film entitled “Re-emerging: the Jews of Nigeria” got rave reviews at the world's most prestigious film festivals and was proclaimed by critics as one of the must-see documentaries of the year. In 2015 he released his celebrated film entitled, “The Amazing Nina Simone”, which had a hugely successful theatrical run in 10 countries and is widely considered to be THE definitive cinematic tribute to this legendary music artist. And now, our guest is about to release a monumentally important film about the first and the greatest female trailblazer in the history of American politics: the unstoppable force of nature known as Bella Abzug. In 1970, when America – and the world – was a patriarchy ruled by men, Bella Abzug challenged the status quo, running a groundbreaking grass roots campaign from the streets of Manhattan, that elevated her all the way to the halls of Congress from 1971 to 1977. With her irrepressible energy, fearless Bronx swagger, and captivatingly blunt oratorical frankness, she was determined to break up the “old boys' club”, and that she did. She battled for women's rights, seniors' rights, children's rights, gay rights, racial equality - in fact, she fought for civil rights for everyone. She fought vigorously against the Vietnam War. She endured the mounting forces from both the right and the left, and the powers of the Nixon Administration, the CIA, FBI, and of course, the media. The film is entitled, “Bella: This Woman's Place is in the House”, and it won the prestigious Library of Congress Ken Burns Prize for Film. This fascinating and compelling film includes never-before-seen home movies, audio diaries, newly-discovered news footage, and interviews with Hilary Clinton, Barbara Streisand, Shirley MacLaine, Lily Tomlin, Gloria Steinem, Marlo Thomas, and many more. There can be no question that Bella Abzug paved the way for future generations of female leadership, not only in politics, but in EVERY field. And thanks to our guest, the whole world is FINALLY going to know this amazing woman once and for all.
