The Kellys and the Smileys, two families competing in the Max reality show Coming From America, tell Tavis what it's like to move from the U.S. to Ghana and Zambia.

Show follows Beacon family's move to Africa Many Americans bluster about leaving the country over political tension and other heated issues, but in 2021, the Smiley family of Beacon bailed for Zambia. Their participation in an HBO Max show about four families that became expats in various parts of Africa, Coming from America, which began streaming last month, came through happenstance. Evidenced by a Zoom call and the family's social media channels, the Smileys are living up to their name and enjoying a laid-back lifestyle. The family appears to have seamlessly integrated into the daily rhythms of the country's capital, Lusaka (population 3 million). Their new home also serves as a launchpad to tour the world, and they have returned stateside for visits (school-age children, River and William, attend a Beacon summer camp). The family still owns a house on Jackson Avenue, which is rented out. When asked if they plan to return, Gabe slowly shakes his head, "No." Elaine looks wistful. She misses her family in Brooklyn and upstate, but her mother, Marjorie Baynes, overcame a fear of flying and joins them on some jaunts. After meeting in Brooklyn, the couple found themselves priced out. Eight years ago, they moved north after discovering Beacon during upstate escapes to ride bicycles. Elaine worked a health care job in Manhattan, Gabe as a career counselor at the Poughkeepsie Day School. He says they became increasingly uncomfortable with "racism, generally, and volatile politics" and began looking for a job abroad. After getting an offer in Belgium and another at Lusaka International Community School, they jumped into the heart of Africa. Then, a friend of a friend told them about the Max show and helped make it happen. "I love Beacon, it's a bubble," says Elaine. "It's progressive and all, but I felt tokenized." Shortly before the move, though, she met a lot of "women of color with similar lefty values whom I wish I'd met years ago," which softened her views. But she also mentions "Karens" and the "white cop on the corner." Their social media videos tick off some things they miss (tacos and sidewalks) and others that they were glad to jettison (commuting and the rat race). Instagram videos show them zipping around on four-wheel dirt bikes and visiting their adopted country's Kafue National Park. Over three years, they've racked up mileage points jetting to the Philippines and just about every country that surrounds landlocked Zambia, which is centrally located in the continent's sub-Saharan southern section. Elaine took a solo birthday trip to Mauritius. Now that they're outside the U.S. looking in, they sometimes find it hard to describe their feelings. "In Zambia, there's classism, but no internalized racism and no ultra-macho attitudes," says Elaine. "People are calm. Almost everyone is Black and, for me, that's empowering. I can wear my hair any way I want." Before the move, friends and relatives gave them an earful. Someone asked Elaine: "What are you going to do, sell mangoes on the street?" Hardly: The couple created the Zambridgian Leather Co. The name, which mashes up Zambia and Gabe's hometown of Cambridge, Massachusetts, hints at a metaphoric span between countries and continents. Besides Elaine's mom, the Smileys' friends and neighbors from Beacon, Matthew Condon and his 91-year-old mother, Nancy, have visited twice and plan to return this month. The Condons have taken a safari, swam in the Devil's Pool, visited Victoria Falls and walked with lion cubs. "It's a wonderful, stress-free place; they're so relaxed over there," Matthew says. Condon recalled visiting a high-end steakhouse "where you could cut the meat with a fork because there's no steroids." The check was $100 for six adults and two children. There are downsides, like bad sushi, power outages and the locals' surprise that they take their dog, Mango, on walks. Arzt und Patient reden im Sprechzimmer zu wenig - und oft aneinander vorbei. Die Forschung sagt: Das könnte und müsste längst anders sein. Keine acht Minuten dauert ein Gespräch zwischen Arzt und Patient in Deutschland im Durchschnitt, das hat eine Studie in Berliner Hausarztpraxen ergeben. Und schon nach knapp 20 Sekunden werden die Patienten das erste Mal unterbrochen. Dabei schreibt das Patientenrechtegesetz von 2013 eigentlich vor, dass jeder über seine Behandlung mitentscheiden darf. Die Medizinjournalistin Silke Jäger hat recherchiert, was die Forschung über die Kommunikation im Sprechzimmer weiß, wie weit Reformansätze in Medizinstudium und Facharztausbildung sind und wie sich das auf die Krankheitsrisiken ärmerer und bildungsferner Menschen auswirkt. Blueticks are slow. Blueticks have bad feet. Bluetick breeders are kennel blind. Blueticks have never won the UKC WORLD HUNT. The list could go on and on. In spite of it all, Bluetick folks are dedicated. Brian cut his teeth coonhunting with some of the greats. Indiana is home to more UKC World Championship trophies than any other state, by a wide margin. So, Brian could have gone any direction with any of the hound breeds but he found his groove with a line of blueticks commonly referred to as the Rambo Line. Lonnie Smiley and Kevin Leach took Brian in and raised him up in blue tick tradition. Brian is now sharing this inheritance with his son Conor. Chris, Brian and Conor spend a morning talking about hunting and hounds with a deep dive into this sliver of Bluetick History. Spielend Essen ist eine ernste Sache. Jedenfalls wurde mir das als Kind so beigebracht. Es hiess nämlich immer mal wieder "mit dem Essen spielt man nicht!" Ohne dies zu hinterfrage habe ich gehorcht - und mit dem Essen eben nicht mehr gespielt. Schade. Seltsam fand ich, weshalb man Kuchen oder andere Desserts so liebevoll gestalten und mit Smileys etc verzieren darf. Meine Schlussfolgerung: mit dem Essen spielt man nicht, aber mit dem Dessert geht das. Obwohl man dieses ja auch isst. Vielleicht sind nicht alle Speisen als Essen zu betrachten. Das wäre eine andere Erklärung. Aber am Ende stelle ich nüchtern für mich fest: Essen darf eine freudvolle Angelegenheit sein, vor allem in fröhlicher Gemeinschaft. Und darum finde ich: mit dem Essen darf man spielen - so lange man respektvoll und nicht unachtsam oder verschwenderisch damit umgeht. Und dies - so meine ich - betrifft im Leben eigentlich jeden Bereich, nicht nur das Essen. Daher: spielerisch-fröhliches Sein! Das Ergebnis: Während Tiere recht gut vertreten sind, sind vor allem Pflanzen, Pilze und Mikroorganismen stark unterrepräsentiert. Und auch einige Tiergruppen sind nur oberflächlich dargestellt: Während Weißkopfseeadler und Koala klar erkennbar sind, fehlt es an Insekten und Spinnentieren. Dabei gibt es viel mehr Gliederfüßer als Wirbeltiere in der Natur. My short term goal is to start school and my long term goal is to be the best dad I can be. What I'm most thankful for right now in life is my family and when all is said and done, I'd like to remembered for just being "me" - being myself." Kwasi and his family were on their very first PCS across the U.S. as a family. Trucks were loaded and babies were crying yet they were having a good time and excited about their move from New Mexico to Florida. Half way through the trip a group of professional criminals hot-wired their vehicle attached to their U-Haul, and stole all of their belongings. Personal documents, heirlooms, furniture, pictures, electronics...gone in the blink of an eye.  His supervision acted fast and created a go-fund-me for $10K. After friends and family desperately tried to spread their story around - Eventually this news hit the infamous AMN/NCO/SNCO Facebook page and his story went viral. Organizations like the Eglin First Sergeant Council, EveryWarrior.org, and Black Rifle Coffee Company (Niceville) chipped in and his family walked away with $15K. Although this doesn't replace everything - the love and support from the Veteran community was felt by the Smileys and it helped tremendously.
