Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 11, 2024 is: quirk KWERK noun Quirk refers to an unusual habit or way of behaving. It can also refer to something strange that happens by chance, as in “a quirk of fate.” // For an icebreaker, we were each asked to share a noteworthy quirk about ourselves. Mine was that I have to make sure every square of my waffles is buttered evenly before I eat them. See the entry > Examples: “The hip-hop legend [E-40] has been rapping for more than 30 years, carving his own corner of the rap world with his inimitable vocal quirks and a freewheeling cadence that made songs like ‘Sprinkle Me,' ‘Tell Me When to Go,' and ‘U and Dat' transcendental hits.” — Andre Gee, Rolling Stone, 28 Nov. 2023 Did you know? Those whose quirk is to zig while others zag (and conversely those who zag while others zig) will appreciate the origins of today's word. Not its etymological origins, mind you—no one knows whence quirk came—but the twists and turns of its meanings across the centuries. The oldest known use of quirk dates to the mid-1500s, and referred to a clever verbal dodge of the kind one might use to turn the tables on someone in an argument or debate. It didn't take long for quirk's meaning to expand to cover all kinds of twisty, turn-y things, from witty retorts and curlicue flourishes made with ink on paper to the vagaries or twists of fate. The sense of quirk meaning “a peculiarity of action or behavior” refers to a twist of sorts as well, insofar as our quirks often flip others' expectations of us, perhaps even causing them to quirk their eyebrows now and again. In a surprising twist, quirk began to be used as a verb meaning “to curve or twist” in the late 1800s.

Earl "E-40" Stevens put his hometown of Vallejo on the map with songs like "Tell Me When to Go" and "Sprinkle Me." Now the rapper is expanding his empire with his own wine and tequila, and a popular, deep-fried Filipino food that he calls his "favorite dish in the world!" KTVU's Sal Castaneda sat down with E-40 to talk about his humble beginnings, his rise to fame, and his goals for the future.
A 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors recipient and the First Lady of the BayArea’s multi-platinum royal family entertainment group, The Click. Along with her two brothers, E40 and D Shot, and cousin B Legit, The Click elevated Suga-T to become the biggest selling West Coast woman in hip hop, culminating with the multi-platinum hit “Sprinkle Me” with E40. “Sprinkle Me” was the first platinum hip hop hit by a brother sister duo. As a teen mom, Suga-T had responsibilities far beyond her own career ambitions and made it a point to take breaks away from hip hop, forced to create a variety of successful businesses both for survival and as a way of balancing out her fears of depending on music only. She knew before many artists that a star has to be a brand first, creating as many opportunities to make a living for yourself as possible to support the ones you love. In the midst of it all, she became a Young Grandmother, a matriarch of her own next generation responsible for two generations flourishing under her name. While re-inventing her brand to become a better role model, she experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. This experience gave Suga-T a lot of insight from a lot of perspectives which provided her the passion to increase her personal, professional and spiritual development. She shares all the nuggets and jewels that she experienced, and created The Winners Dictionary to better prepare others for their life journey or for the intervention in the middle of it.

E-40 is one of the greatest rappers of all time. This mix is a tribute to him in the tradition of my previous mixes devoted to DJ Quik, R. Kelly, Gang Starr and Too $hort (the latter with DJ Eleven). If you've heard any of them, you know I go all out-- meticulously selecting, sequencing and mixing songs to put together the best possible representation of those artists' music. This mix is no exception. Yay Game draws 40 songs from all eras of E-40's career, from 1990's "Let's Side" to his current single, "Function". His catalog is so vast and deep that choosing just 40 songs to represent him was incredibly tough, but I've tried to fit in everything from mob slumpers and album sleepers to radio and club hits. If you enjoy this, go grab E-40's three (!) new albums, Block Brochure Volumes 1-3! These are the songs in the mix: 1. Da Bumble 2. Sideways feat. B-Legit 3. Bitch feat. Too $hort 4. L.I.Q 5.
