Growing up in Vallejo's Hillside neighborhood, B-Legit talks about his early days being influenced by the D-Boy culture of the 80s while also discovering hip-hop. While attending Grambling University for a year with E-40, they started rapping and decided to come back to Vallejo and form a group. From there, they created Sick Wid It Records and innovated business strategies to take independent rap music to the next level. This led to a deal with Jive Records and B-Legit has been a fixture in rap music ever since. In this episode he also discusses 2pac, Mac Dre, C-Bo, and many other highlights from his career. -- Sponsored by Christopher's Bakery @christophersbakery420 -- For promo opportunities on the podcast, e-mail: info@historyofthebay.com -- Produced by DEO @deo415, videography by @mvp_kingced --- Hat and hoodie by REBEL 8 https://rebel8.com -- History of the Bay Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3ZUM4rCv6xfNbvB4r8TVWU?si=9218659b5f4b43aa Online Store: https://dregsone.myshopify.com Follow Dregs One: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1UNuCcJlRb8ImMc5haZHXF?si=poJT0BYUS-qCfpEzAX7mlA Instagram: https://instagram.com/dregs_one TikTok: https://tiktok.com/@dregs_one Twitter: https://twitter.com/dregs_one Facebook: https://facebook.com/dregsone415 00:00 Intro 01:39 Growing up in a musical family 04:52 Vallejo in the 70s-80s 08:29 The D-Boy Era 13:49 Grambling University 17:05 MVP “The Kings Men” (first album) 24:09 The Click & mobb music 27:38 Sick Wid It Records 31:17 B-Legit the Savage “Tryin To Get A Buck” 33:33 Sick Wid It deal with Jive Records 38:28 Levitti 39:55 Bay Area rap scene 43:10 “Ghetto Smile” with Daryl Hall 45:33 “City 2 City” 47:30 Working with 2pac 53:49 Mac Dre 58:28 “Hempin Ain't Easy,” leaving Jive 1:03:27 The Bela Blunt 1:06:17 Longevity --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support
Until recently, a persistent narrative about women in hip-hop was that only one can succeed at any given time. But, that wasn't how the Bay Area rolled, especially in the 1990s as the region's hip-hop scene flourished. In the early decades of Bay Area rap, artists including Conscious Daughters, Suga T and Mystic established themselves as legends. They also built what they call a sisterhood: They recorded songs together. They showed up for each other's shows. And they helped their fellow female artists succeed in a cutthroat industry. We'll talk with women who pioneered Bay Area rap and how they continue to influence the genre today. Guests: Nastia Voynovskaya, associate editor, KQED Arts Carla “CMG” Green, one half of The Conscious Daughters, an American female hip hop duo from the Bay Area "SUGA-T" Tenina Stevens, rapper and singer from Vallejo, California. She is a founding member of The Click, a rap group that also includes her brothers E-40 and D-Shot and her cousin B-Legit. She is also an actress, speaker, business owner and nonprofit executive.

You are the service members, veterans or family and friends of veterans who stay up-to-date on military news, pay, benefits, fitness and veteran jobs. Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. For one day, we stand united in respect for you, our veterans. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars. We celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Suga-T joins us for this brand new exclusive interview
A 2016 VH1 Hip Hop Honors recipient and the First Lady of the BayArea’s multi-platinum royal family entertainment group, The Click. Along with her two brothers, E40 and D Shot, and cousin B Legit, The Click elevated Suga-T to become the biggest selling West Coast woman in hip hop, culminating with the multi-platinum hit “Sprinkle Me” with E40. “Sprinkle Me” was the first platinum hip hop hit by a brother sister duo. As a teen mom, Suga-T had responsibilities far beyond her own career ambitions and made it a point to take breaks away from hip hop, forced to create a variety of successful businesses both for survival and as a way of balancing out her fears of depending on music only. She knew before many artists that a star has to be a brand first, creating as many opportunities to make a living for yourself as possible to support the ones you love. In the midst of it all, she became a Young Grandmother, a matriarch of her own next generation responsible for two generations flourishing under her name. While re-inventing her brand to become a better role model, she experienced the good, the bad and the ugly. This experience gave Suga-T a lot of insight from a lot of perspectives which provided her the passion to increase her personal, professional and spiritual development. She shares all the nuggets and jewels that she experienced, and created The Winners Dictionary to better prepare others for their life journey or for the intervention in the middle of it.

Suga-T has a strong passion for teaching by experience and education and has decided to re-launch the “Be About It Movement” making available her life changing keynote, and trainings along with available upcoming launch of her new rapstress soundtrack titled “Ghetto Survived” and recently released songstress soundtrack “Unbreakable Me” that presents her soulful singing brand and life story that encourages personal development. Jeremiah Massaquoi, born March 8, 1991 with lineage stemming from as far reaching as Freetown, Sierra Leone, was born to a large yet impoverished family, and found his destiny through music.. His circumstances made life dim, until one day his uncle sent for him to come to New York to live with him. Taking singing gigs and working as a dishwasher in a local restaurant in Brooklyn to survive, music overwhelmingly became his passion. He felt like he didn’t want to be another Usher, Justin Timberlake or Chris Brown; he was his own person, his own creative force and in order to impact the world, he needed to find his own voice! After going through several music production companies in the tri – state area, he was recommended by a friend to seek the services and talents of a talented producer/songwriter name Anthony (Boogie) of Firestorm Entertainment. It was there where he found his voice and his place in this world as an artist.
