Come meet Robert A. Stambovsky "Stambo" my first local in person interview. Robert served his country proud for 39 1/2 years in the United States Marines. After returning home from Vietnam in 1967, Robert decided to go back to school, and while going to school he wanted to go back to the military, so he joined the Marines. Eventually he would go Active Duty and spend 39 1/2 years active duty before being forced to retire due to military age requirements in 2004. Since retiring he also retired from NASA as an Engineer and his now flying and instructing out of Fox Airfield, Lancaster, California. Please come listen in!

In this episode, we discuss Stambovsky v Ackley, also known as “The Ghostbusters Ruling”. We had a ton of fun recording this episode. 

When a woman sells her home and doesn't disclose that friendly ghosts haunt it, the subsequent court case leads to the New York Supreme Court officially declaring the house haunted. In 1989, Helen Ackley sold the 18-room Victorian mansion that she'd lived in for 24 years. Located at 1 Laveta Place in Nyack, New York, overlooking the Hudson River, and lovingly restored by Helen and her late husband when they first purchased it in the 1960s, it was the perfect home for the Stambovskys, a Wall Street Trader and his wife, who purchased it. Except for one thing--the house was haunted. Helen Ackley was proud of her ghosts, and seemed to consider them close friends. When a local architect mentioned the house's paranormal reputation to the new buyer, Stambovsky immediately sued to get his down payment back, and refused to move into the home. That led to a court case, widely known as the Ghostbusters Ruling, that went to the New York Supreme Court--twice--and cumulated with a pun-filled ruling that quoted the ghost from Shakespeare's Hamlet, as well as the hit 1984 movie Ghostbusters. The judge had spoken: "as a matter of law, the house is haunted." Selling a Haunted House? Legal Experts Give Advice on Scary Business It’s that time of year. October 31st is hiding around the corner. Halloween and haunted houses. Both scary business. WMU-Cooley Law School Professors give practical advice to home owners with chilling concerns for more than just one day out of the year. Professor Christopher Trudeau teaches Stambovsky v. Ackley in his Property I class. The case covers the disclosures of paranormal activity during the sale of a home. Professor Trudeau has also done extensive research on other statutes and laws regarding such cases. For instance, there is a law in Louisiana that requires individuals to disclose whether their house has a reputation of being haunted. Other cases actually cause people to disclose that a house ISN’T haunted as a marketing tool.
