[00:30] Swords Into Plowshares (55 minutes) World War I saw great advancements in warfare. World War II saw even further advancements, where mankind could destroy all flesh off of the Earth. And now Germany is rearming again with all kinds of new and destructive technology. Imagine what the world will be like when all of man's creative genius is turned to productive uses! This is the reality coming soon, pictured by the Feast of Tabernacles.
In the latter days, the nations will flock to the Mountain of the Lord to learn Torah. During that time peace and plenty will reign. Also during that time the Lord will regather and heal the dispersed of Israel and reform them into a mighty nation.
In this episode, we see a vision of God's kingdom in it's fullness and we talk about becoming peacemakers in our time!
This week we continue with our series covering chapters from my book “Duty to Defend.” In this episode we discuss the chapter by Rev. Larry Beane II about Isaiah 2:4 and the idea that, to be good Christians, we should encourage people to melt down their guns and turn them into farm implements. The massive bronze sculpture of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, in uniform, astride his horse Traveller, stood in a downtown Charlottesville park for nearly a century. It was at the center of a deadly white nationalist rally in 2017, when Neo-Nazis and white supremacists tried to stop the city's plans to remove the statue. It came down to cheers in July of 2021. Dr. Jalane Schmidt has been part of the group of activists, scholars, and historians fighting not only to have the statue removed, but to doing something transformative and radical with it - melt it down. In this interview, she discusses the long legal battles to arrive at this moment, the ways armed Neo-Conferederates terrorized the public space surrounding the monument for years, and why melting it down was a moral risk worth taking. Take up the hatchet; Hatchet man; Hatched-faced; Scalpel, not an ax
Anyone born this century has only ever really known a world with one major power or another at war, and our communities and country often feel uncivil and conflicted. We have more technology than ever to keep track of our many responsibilities, but it doesn't give us relief from the anxiety of it all. We are aching for peace, but as something deeper than just a quiet, comfortable feeling. There has to be a difference, in other words, between being at peace... and being numb. In this year's Advent series, pastors Sarah, Erica, and Steve are seeking to "unsentimentalize" the major themes of this season that leads up to Christmas, which means explore what peace really is, and how it might move us to greater action in the world rather than less. In a conversation that ranges from ancient prophets to contemporary poets, and which mixes Star Trek references with Wendell Berry's environmental philosophy, we invite you to a deeper consideration of being people of restless peace.

Spears to pruning hooks. Conflict to peacefulness. Violence to brotherhood. It's not realistic. It's better than that—it's a promise from God.

This week BibleWorm reads Isaiah 36:1-3, 13-20; 37:1-7; and then 2:1-4 - a set of texts that calls us to sit with questions about the power of rhetoric to confuse, mislead, and exhaust us in times of fear and conflict. How can we preserve our energy for the proverbial moment of birth, when the stakes could not be higher? What would the world be like if political struggle and violence could be taken off the table – what could we turn our attention to instead?

In this episode, we'll tackle yet another area where so many evangelical Christians have adopted a power-over mindset: the way current partisan political discussions speak about guns. I want us thinking about this issue as kingdom citizens FIRST, Americans SECOND, and see what, if anything, the Bible has to say on the matter. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unbinding-the-bible/support
My guest here today on DITD is Vincent Kay a lifelong resident of Connecticut. Vincent happens to be one of Connecticut's top garlic growers. The U.S. has averaged over eleven mass shootings per week in 2022. At least 344 people have been killed and almost 1,400 wounded. Is this the kind of world we want to live in? What if I told you we get to create the world we want to live in? Last week we looked at imagination. This week we move to integration. The prophet Micah uses the image of beating swords into plowshares to evoke the process of transformation. Instruments of death are transformed into instruments of life. Today we talk about guns + hearts.

Outside the UN headquarters in New York City, stands a bronze sculpture of a man holding a hammer high in one hand, using it to beat a huge broadsword into the shape of a farming tool. The inscription reads: “We Shall Beat Swords Into Plowshares.” The UN says the sculpture symbolizes “man's desire to put an end to war and convert the means of destruction into creative tools for the benefit of all mankind.” Today's episode shows some examples from around the world of people converting weapons into life-enriching tools.
