Joining me today is American drummer and producer Joey Waronker. Joey has played for some legendary names througout his career so far including Beck, R.E.M. Roger Waters, the supergroup Atoms For Peace featuring Flea from The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Thom Yorke from Radiohead. Paul McCartney, Norah Jones, Leonard Cohen and many more! Join us as we pick through Joeys' spectacular career so far including a large chunk about Roger Waters and a very long time on the road and how this affects family life with a wife and young son back at home. We talk about his recent performance with Beck and the Boston Pops Orchestra and how dynamics play a huge part in making this a success (in my opinion Joey is one of the most dynamic drummers around today). Joeys' British affiliation doesnt end with Roger Waters though, in late 23' he recorded an album with Liam Gallagher & John Squire that was released inMarch 24' to critical acclaim, he tells us about the experience of recording and touring with these two giants of the UK music scene. Huge thanks to Joey for taking the time to do this during a particularly crazy time! looking forward to part 2!

70 years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower went before the United Nations and delivered a speech unlike anything the world had ever heard. The president spoke in sweeping terms about the terrible destructive power of new atomic weapons. But he also had a message for the assembly, one with a more optimistic tone: Join us in harnessing the power of the atom for good — not evil. From the dawn of the atomic age, nuclear power branched into two distinct paths: nuclear energy, and nuclear weapons. A chain reaction of historical events would lead down one path to the creation and eventual detonation of the world's first atomic weapons in 1945. Down the other path, work forged ahead on peaceful uses of nuclear power. Join us on a trip through nuclear history, from "Atoms for Peace" to today.

Early in the morning of March 28th, 1979, equipment failures and a stuck open relief valve prevented the removal of heat from Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear reactor's core - an essential function that prevents reactor damage. And within hours, it seemed like things were on the brink of a catastrophic nuclear crisis. In the end, a true crisis would be averted... kind of. While the reactor's partial meltdown did NOT kill anyone... the media coverage of it DID nearly kill America's nuclear energy industry. Was that reaction justified? Now they we understand what really happened, should we now pick up where we left off with nuclear plant production in the 1970s? Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? Forró In The Dark's music is meant to be played under the cover of night. The band is named after forró, a type of Northeastern Brazil dance music. The New York based Brazilian ex-pats give traditional music an update with jazz, rock, psychedelia, folk and charismatic and attentive rhythms. Since their formation in 2002 (beginning as a birthday entertainment for lead singer, Mauro Refosco), Forró In The Dark has worked with musicians like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Thom Yorke's Atoms For Peace and David Byrne among others. Their cross-cultural sound takes on new elements on their 2015 album, Forro Zinho: Forro in the Dark Plays Zorn, where the group takes on American avant-garde sax player/composer John Zorn's works with a Brazilian twist. They perform in-studio. Setlist: "Forro Zinho" "Novato" "Life is only real then when I am" For more pictures from the session visit our Tumblr.

Before attaining massive success with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea was a wild child, roaming the streets of Hollywood. He and Joe discuss: the unfamiliar vulnerability he faced when writing his excellent memoir Acid for the Children; the cathartic experience of translating traumatic memories to text; the spiritual connection between jazz and punk rock; the seeming decline of active listening; and the kind of connection he seeks with drummers.

Joey Waronker is a drumming legend. He has played with Roger Waters, Thom Yorke, Flea, Air, Beck, R.E.M. and that’s just naming a few! His list of credits is a veritable who’s who of the last 20 years in popular music and I’ve been a huge fan of a whole bunch of the records he has played on. Somewhere amidst the mean back streets of Philadelphia you might stumble upon Alex Burkat, producer, disc jockey and all round good guy. Across the last four years he has released music on a variety of labels which includes Mister Saturday Night, Permanent Vacation, 100% Silk and Third Ear Recordings. His sound is often aligned with what you might describe as more melodically inclined house and electronic music, his tracks as listenable upon a long walk as they are purpose built for the club. As a disc jockey his variation in sound is aspirational, this mix features tracks from Outkast, Atoms For Peace, Roman Flugel and many, many more. A moderately paced mix of eclecticism and sublime taste.
In this podcast episode, we feature President Eisenhower delivering a speech named by others as Atoms for Peace at the United Nations in 1953. This speech was delivered during high tensions of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Berlin Blockade had only been resolved a few years earlier in 1948. That event nearly triggered a military confrontation between those who countries then. Both nations were rapidly developing new weapons with even more destructive force than used at Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War Two. This critical entry from Wikipedia providing more context for this speech and the U.S. intentions to influence the European allies and the Soviet Union. I was impressed with the deep analysis of the article. Rather than offering a commentary after this speech, I recommend reading the Wikipedia entry about the speech and the bigger issues.

To improve their nuclear weapons, both countries were conducting open air tests. The Limited Test Ban Treaty would not be signed by these countries for another decade to prohibit such tests. Both sides were also building many more nuclear weapons that could be used in a war of annihilation against one another or as a deterrent that would discourage a nuclear exchange. Joey Waronker possesses a powerful groove and a gift for nuance and shading. These attributes--combined with a deep understanding of production and a knack for electronic percussion--are what distinguish him as one of the leading drummers of the modern paradigm. He tells Joe about growing up in a musical family; studying with the legendary Freddie Gruber; his love of the punk label, SST Records; overcoming his neuroses through therapy; and working with artists like Beck and REM. He also answers listener questions.

One of India's longest running and most prolific stage names; Gaurav Raina - as one half of the Midival Punditz - is a familiar name for music lovers and peers alike. In a step in a new direction, his solo project 'GRAIN', showcases a musician within a musician. Sonic textures that are deeper, darker – even melancholic – zigzagging through genres with confidence. In our eyes, some of his most technically adept and exciting output thus far. ‘Grey to Silver’ is GRAIN’s debut LP out this month via Times Music. Featuring collaborations with the likes of Karsh Kale, Monica Dogra, Anoushka Shankar, Ankur Tewari, Brooklyn Shanti and Talia Bentson - it doesn’t disappoint. Like something created by any of the worlds longest standing producers, Grey To Silver will want you to pat yourself on the back for sticking with it. It's beautiful, ugly and also a little bit weird. And in that vain so is his Wild City mix. In an unexpected turn from the producer it includes tracks from acts such as The Bug, Darkside, Atoms For Peace and Zola Jesus. One more of these forms of output that reveals more and more about its creator over time. An inspiring example of how, free of pressure, Raina has blossomed into something definite, yet at his own pace. In a bare-faced attempt to up the ante, Rob and Clive invite The Little Unsaid, AKA John Elliott, into Studio 2A for some musical shenanigalia. John performs a new song, and covers tracks by Nick Cave and Atoms For Peace. John also joins us for a robust discussion on the merits of and surprising facts around the world of the cover version. Rob and Clive reveal the music blogs they can heartily recommend (and the ones that they'll cheerfully never go near again) and guest sound engineer Alex Purkiss shows us up with a radical uptick in sound quality over the bits he's in charge of. Endearingly shambolic is the way we roll, wise guy! Stop making us look bad! All this and the usual level of Z-grade pun-slinging and punditry from the crew that put the K in kwality.

FeedBack w. Wes Nyle. EP19. Jack White. 07.13.12July 9th marked the birthday for one of Detroit’s most notable musicians, a player who simultaneously revolutionized and resurrected true American Blues, but never let one type of music define who he was or who he would be collaborating with.In the documentary It Might Get Loud Jack White stated that Son Houses’s Grinnin In Your Face is his favorite song of all time. The grit and simplicity of this song may shed light on the why White uses tried and true techniques to keep his relatively fresh concepts in a lo-fi time capsule.White started banging on a drum set at age 6, and mulled around the garage rock scene of Detroit for years, contemplating where his overactive drive lead him. His Catholic upbringing would find him as an altar boy in younger years and nearly bring him to a seminary in Wisconsin, with aspirations of becoming a priest. His musical mind would eventually get the better of him when he realized that the school may not let him play his new amp in the dorms. In 1997 Jack created The White Stripes, a highly stylized two piece, with his now ex-wife Meg White, known for their simplistic writing and garage band static. The early years of the band created rumors about what the true relationship was between Jack and Meg. And in 2003 as the duo’s infamy continued to expand, Wayne Coyne and The Flaming Lips touched on the hype, and insanity that surrounded The White Stripes, on the song titled Thank You Jack White. Two years down the road Jack’s creativity and thirst for collaborative art would help cast the mold for The Raconteurs: a legit four piece featuring two members of the Greenhornes, bassist Jack Lawerence and precisionist Patrick Keeler. The band’s first full length was recorded in the home of the bands 4th member, Brendan Benson: a multi-instrumentalist and successful solo artist. Both Raconteurs albums claimed gold success in the UK.2009 was the year of the super group, bringing the US rock genre powerhouses like Dead By Sunrise, Atoms For Peace, Tinted Windows, and Them Crooked Vultures. Jack White was not going to be left out. Even if the band didn’t admit to being labeled as a super group it was hard to deny The Dead Weather combined the talents of Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, Allison Mosshart of The Kills and the other “Jack” Jack Lawrence. White and Allison credit Captain Beefheart as a major influence on the band’s sound as did the band I featured a couple weeks back Jukebox The Ghost. Here’s a taster of that influence. It wasn’t till his 37th year on this planet; White would use his partners in musical genius to help create his solo album Blunderbuss. This new album defines what White is through and through. The album uses almost exclusively 1st takes with limited track doubling, coupled with recording done using analog tape, and ribbon mics. The signature sound brings forth exactly what White wants. A warm tone that sounds best played from vinyl. A vinyl that can be purchased from Jack’s record store/ label 3rd Man Records. Marketing ploy or not a thank you is deserved to a man who cherishes American music at its greatest and stopped at nothing to shine a beacon on what great music sounds like and how it is created.Happy Birthday Jack White.Tracks Heard In This Podcast: Grinnin In Your Face – Son House Let’s Build A Home – The White Stripes The Hardest Button To Button – The White Stripes Thank You Jack White – The Flaming Lips Store Bought Bones – The Raconteurs Cut Like A Buffalo – The Dead Weather BlunderBuss – Jack White
