GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Dmitry Orlov is a Russian-American engineer, linguist and writer. He is a truly independent mind and a more and more popular guest of print and internet publications. He has written extensively about collapse in general and specifically, comparing the demise of the USSR to the US crisis. He has analyzed topics as diverse as the Ugandan Ik people, the Russian mafia and the Pashtun ethical code which enabled them to become the graveyard of empires. His book "The five stages of collapse" is an astonishing firework of ideas, many of them suggesting the readers should get collapseproof, because catastrophic demise is the inevitable destiny of empires and states; the bigger and more structured, the more catastrophic their collapse. Get ready for an interview with an original thinker and a constant flow of surprising arguments. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Graduated from the Russian National Research Nuclear University and got his Ph.D. in theoretical nuclear physics at Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy which is an equivalent of Los Alamos Lab. Forced into exile in 1976 for criticizing Soviet foreign and domestic policies. After emigrating to the United States, worked as researcher at the Laser Fusion Lab at the University of Rochester, NY, and Professor at the American University in Washington, DC. After the collapse of the USSR founded the American University in Moscow to promote US-Russia science and educational exchanges. Currently also a Professor at National Research Nuclear University and Moscow State University. He is the author of 14 books and several hundred science and political science articles in the American and Russian media.
For more than a decade, Becky Wright has been helping organizations identify challenges, navigate change, and turn their plans into reality. Two of her favourite words are “challenge” and “change," which are the concepts that drives and fuels her passion for Project Management. With her career starting out as an administrative assistant CNL and flourishing over the next 15 years of progressive responsibility in project management, training and process improvement, she decided to pursue her dream of running my own business, launching Milestone Scheduling & Consulting in 2016, resigning from her full time job in 2017 and is proud to have Canadian Nuclear Laboratories and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. as two of her valued consulting clients. In this episode, we chat about:
This week the ladies revisit an old favorite and discuss a woman who rose from the dead! First, Kelley revisits Sameera Moussa, a scientist of atomic energy who had the crazy idea that maybe this incredibly powerful technology should be regulated and it MAY have led to her untimely death. Then, Emily tells the terrifying tale of Anne Greene, a scullery made who found herself on the wrong end of her boss' grandson and was sentenced to death. But what should have been the end of Anne's story, was just the beginning. Grab a bottle of wine (or water if you're old) because you're a feminist baby and we're wining about herstory!
In this second episode of Satya Samvad by Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar, he speaks to Prof. R. K. Kotnala on his invention - the Hydroelectric cell as well as the movement towards realizing the values of Dharma with modern science. Bharat is surefootedly moving on the path to reclaiming its place as Vishvaguru. Bharatiyata advocates for a holistic and sustainable approach to life and society, innovation and development, rooted in the principles of balance, interconnectedness, and ethical responsibility. Within science and engineering, embracing Bharatiyata and its Dharmic premise means designing technologies and conducting research with mindfulness towards the delicate equilibrium of natural ecosystems. It involves integrating traditional wisdom with modern scientific knowledge to create solutions that harmonize with nature rather than exploit it. One of the most seminal works in this direction and in the world of science from Bharat in the 21st century has been undertaken by Professor R. K. Kotnala, in his invention of the hydroelectric cell, a milestone in the humanitarian movement towards net carbon zero in the world. Prof. Kotnala is widely respected in the scientific community for his remarkable achievements across various fields including solar cells, multiferroics, spintronics, clean energy, environmental sciences, and scientific ethics. He is chairman of National Accredition Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) and Raja Ramanna Fellow in the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. He was a former head of the Environmental Sciences & Biomedical Metrology Division as well as Chief Scientist at CSIR National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi. He undertook one of the first doctorate research studies on solar cells in the country. As of today, he has published over 560 research papers with more than 13,000 citations and an h-index 57. Dr. Kotnala hydropowers the path to a better tomorrow with green energy, clean energy, infusing Dharma into every scientific stride, nurturing not just a sustainable future, but a conscientious one. The International Atomic Energy Agency convenes this week as leaders call for Russia to get out of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Vladimir Putin meets with senior commander of Wagner mercenary group. What Ukrainian troops are doing to ensure children in their future.
The announcement that Rwanda will partner with German-Canadian company, Dual Fluid, to conduct a Critical Demonstration Experiment is probably the biggest news this month. Why? Because this experiment is the first step in Rwanda's nuclear journey. This partnership is really exciting for me because this means that Rwanda is on the cusp of joining the exclusive club of nuclear states. And for a country like ours that needs cheap, sufficient power for both people and industries, nuclear is a game changer But the thing is, after the excitement, comes the fear. When you think of nuclear fusion, and its ability to create power, you also think about what happens when things go wrong. You think about the Fukushima and Chernobyl nuclear disasters. So, to discuss not just Rwanda's partnership with Dual Fluid, but also what nuclear regulators are doing to ensure that the expected nuclear power generation doesn't become a hazard for the millions of people that call Rwanda home, I am joined this week by Dr. Fidele Ndahayo, the CEO of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board. Created in 2020, the mission of the Rwanda Atomic Energy Board is to promote the peaceful use of atomic energy for sustainable socio-economic development. If you want to share your thoughts on the topics I discuss use the hashtag #LongFormRw on Twitter and follow us on Twitter and Instagram on our handle @TheLongFormRwBe a part of the conversation.

Early in the morning of March 28th, 1979, equipment failures and a stuck open relief valve prevented the removal of heat from Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island Unit 2 nuclear reactor's core - an essential function that prevents reactor damage. And within hours, it seemed like things were on the brink of a catastrophic nuclear crisis. In the end, a true crisis would be averted... kind of. While the reactor's partial meltdown did NOT kill anyone... the media coverage of it DID nearly kill America's nuclear energy industry. Was that reaction justified? Now they we understand what really happened, should we now pick up where we left off with nuclear plant production in the 1970s? Want to apply for the Cummins Family Scholarship fund? As she was a regular contributor to the Oprah Winfrey show, she opened millions of peoples eyes to topics like sex, relationships and love. In 2021, her mission shifted. Dr. Laura is living proof that in moments of deep pain it is possible to experience flickers of joy. Her testimony and her years of research were met with a collision of unimaginable darkness that defies this world's natural order of existence. On February 7, 2021, Dr. Laura walked into her sixteen-year-old son's bedroom to have a chat with him and found him lying on the floor aspirating. Despite a valiant effort from medical responders, he remained listless and unresponsive. That moment was the demarcation of a new way of existing. On that heartbreaking day, Dr. Laura began a life that was void of the earthly connection to the child who infused laughter and joy into her life.Dr. Laura immediately accessed her default mode. By nature, she is a helper, and through her blinding pain, she knew she had to reach out to help others. She understood that her celebrity status could help spare other mothers the pain of losing a child. Within hours, she had shared her story on social media.“My beautiful boy is gone. 16 years old. Sheltering at home. A drug dealer connected with him on Snapchat and gave him fentanyl-laced Xanax or Percocet (toxicology will tell) and he overdosed in his room. They do this because it hooks people even more and is good for business but It causes overdose and the kids don't know what they are taking. My heart is completely shattered and I am not sure how to keep breathing. I post this now only so that not one more kid dies. We watched him so closely. "

It's a little girl's eighth birthday. She wakes to a sight that looks like the end of the world. A radioactive mushroom cloud rises 130,000 feet in the air. And the world wakes up to the devastating fallout of nuclear weapons. In this new mini series from Sideways, writer and Times columnist Matthew Syed is calling for a nuclear awakening. Since the end of the Cold War, when relations between two of the world's nuclear superpowers - the former USSR and the USA - seemed more rosy, Matthew argues that many of us have slipped into a kind of comfortable amnesia about the presence of these destroyers of worlds. The wake up call came when President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February accompanied by veiled nuclear threats. It was a reminder of the mind bending fact that there are weapons in existence that are capable of eradicating our species. Over four episodes, Matthew explores the intellectual and strategic frameworks birthed by the bomb and the tensions of the Cold War, which sought to contain the ultimate destructive force. From deterrence to disarmament and non-proliferation, these ideas all aim at one goal - protection from catastrophic nuclear use. Understanding their origins and complexities is urgently needed, Matthew argues. Ultimately, Matthew will be asking if the actions of Putin in Ukraine call for a new intellectual framework to help make our world safe.
