Welcome to How Humans Heal. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. BreAnna Guan, a Naturopathic Doctor who, like me, graduated from Bastyr University. We talk about balancing women's hormones naturally, especially something rarely discussed: coming off the birth control pill and how healing your gut can help you to regulate your menstrual cycle. So many women struggle with menstrual-related symptoms, whether that is menstrual cramps, heavy bleeding, irregular cycles, which may or may not be diagnosed as endometriosis, PMOS, PMS/PMDD, or even peri-menopausal symptoms. The most common prescription in gynecology is a birth control pill (BCP) or hormonal IUD, which essentially takes over for the ovaries, however, doesn't address the real underlying cause of the menstrual issues. And can cause women to live in fear with side effects and risk – risk of HPV increases after 6 years of BCP use. More and more women are finding that they don't want to rely on synthetic hormones for years (if not decades) of their lives and are looking for help to balance their hormones naturally and optimize their ovary function, whether for pregnancy or for their health in general. Many school-based occupational therapists are working with students who have cortical visual impairment (CVI) but don't recognize it. Unlike ocular visual impairments, CVI is a brain-based processing issue that affects functional vision in ways that fluctuate with environment, fatigue, and sensory complexity. In this episode of PING, we talk with Willem Toorop from NLNet Labs and Ilyas Rahimi who recently completed a masters in Security and Network Engineering at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). They've been looking at the effects of local root serving. Ilyas was on a masters programme called “OS3” at UvA (from the triplet of Open Standards, Open Software and Open Security). NLNet labs is on the campus of UvA and Willem has been working with the masters programme for some time, pursuing research in DNS and DNSSEC with the students doing their masters thesis component. They conduct 2 1-month original research activities in the masters course, and write the second one up as their masters thesis. Locally served root is a model of operating a DNS resolver where it “pre-fetches” the state of the root zone, the apex of the entire DNS naming model. By fetching this data the idea is that both early termination of unresolvable domain names (names where the final terminal label can be seen not to exist under the root of the DNS) and a degree of privacy in fetching resolvable names can be gained, by looking in the local copy. There is a current proposal in the IETF to make this a “best current practice” or BCP. Ilyas looked at 3 different public code-bases (bind, unbound and the knot DNS resolver) and a total of 4 configurations, exploring both in-band and HTTPS bound fetch of the root zone. As well as identifying a bug in the model unbound used, which accounted for a spike in traffic, Ilyas has been able to show that under the update cycle typically seen for the root there is a surprising increase in apparent network traffic fetching the zone, compared to the many but far smaller events asking for uncached data from the roots. There is more work to do in this space, and with the OS3 masters thesis component now given more time in the degree program, there is hope that Willem can continue to work with UvA students, and carry forward the measurements. WIllem has been exploring how the system behaves if converted to incremental updates (IXFR) rather than an entire zone-fetch.

I wanted to ask you about Zen Basil. Is this something that we should also consider taking as well as a fiber source? It looks like there are 15 grams per serving! Thanks so much!! Bernice       Genel: Hi Dr. Cabral, thank you for your work. About 5 years ago I had tuberculosis and long-term treatment. Since then I've had ongoing issues: persistent joint pain and unstable weight. I struggle to gain weight and often lose it without clear reason. Recent labs showed elevated rheumatoid factor (147.6 IU/mL), high ESR (38), and slightly low hemoglobin, suggesting inflammation or rheumatoid arthritis. I currently take DNS, Omega-3, and D3. What additional supplements could help lower inflammation and support recovery? I live outside the US and can order supplements, but EquiLife support said lab results cannot be processed from my country. I don't want to make the detox cause I don't want to lose the little weight I have. What protocol can I follow? Thank you again for your guidance.      Katherine: Hi Doc. I notice when I eat a large breakfast, say from a restaurant, I can go basically the entire day without eating. Is it OK to flip meals - dinner for breakfast, regular lunch, and breakfast for dinner? Are there any studies or positive impacts of doing so? Why don't more health professionals talk about this type of practice? It seems as if it would be good for people. I'm desperate to try anything for my appetite and food noise problem. Thank you so much for answering my question!       Sheena: Hi Dr. C! hope you and your team are well. I'm a 46 year old female experiencing peri-menopause symptoms. My endocrinologist prescribed me birth control pills to help alleviate some of the symptoms which helped for about 8 mths only but now I'm considering HRT. I purchased the Big 5 and want to know if I need to come off BCP for accurate results? If so, how long should I be off before testing? If not, will I need to notify labs in advance? If I'm on HRT, will my results be accurate for Stress Mood test? And my last question, when doing the Detox, am I allowed to take herbal tinctures? Hope you and your team are well. I'm 45 yo and currently on low dose birth control pill to help control the severe perimenopause symptoms I was experiencing. It has REALLY helped which I am thankful for. Obviously I know I cant be on it forever, but the thought of going off and going through all the symptoms is so scary to me. I also know being on the BCP will mask when I'm actually in menopause. Do you have a suggestion as to how I can find out? Is it possible to figure out while on the pill? As instructed by my endocrinologist, I take the pill for 42 day straight, stop for 4 and start again. Could I test my fsh during that 4      Anonymous: Hi Dr. Cabral - I'm hoping you can help me.
