Today we have a special program — the first issue of Great Tape, an audio magazine from KZMU News. We're telling personal stories of the West and providing audio snapshots of what it's like to live and work here — all in the creative spirit of an alternative weekly (except it won't be weekly, at least not yet). Every show will have a different theme which we'll explore in a bunch of ways. And our first theme is “Off to the Races.” In this episode we jump from one daily race to another in Moab — following a baker, newspaper editor, delivery man and nursing-home resident. We also have stories about political races, the race to exterminate an invasive plant and the race to put goods on our shelves. And we have fiction and music! We have a radio drama about Moab's only Uber driver, an excerpt from a book about discovering the West and a song about deep time and the imperceptible natural rhythms of our environment. Contributors were Marlow Mewborn, Emily Arnsten, Veronica Verdin, Lauren Carmona, Brian Laidlaw and The Family Trade. Featured interviews include John Schwoger, Curt Brewer, Jamison Wiggins, Doug McMurdo, Randall Lewis, Liz Ballenger, Kya Marienfeld, Izzi Weimholt, AJ Long, Victor Beltran, Raymond Munson, Joel Swett and Marge Logan. Original art was created by Veronica Verdin. See detailed show notes here: https://www.kzmu.org/great-tape-off-to-the-races/

This week, we talk about optimal stickiness, quest concepts, and brain sharing. Pair programming is like piloting a Jaeger. Drifting off each other's brain powers makes the process of extra-dimensional creature conjuring easier and quicker. Warning! So much brain power in one place may result in brain pain. Featuring highlights from Tape/Off, Full Flower Moon Band, Moreton, Elder, Chalk, Tralala Blip, TOP nachos, TOTTY, Polygon Woods, The Stress of Leisure, Hound, HEXDEBT, Ex Catholics, Jess Ribeiro, Desperada and Julia R. Tape/Off: Previously featured on Live Delay in 2013 and 2014, Tape/Off have been a reliable presence in Brisbane's music community going on a decade. Anchored by the founding partnership of singer/guitarist Nathan Pickels and drummer Branko Cosic, Tape/Off released their first EP, "Unreel Unravel", in 2010, followed shortly by "...And Sometimes Gladness" in 2011. By the time their debut album, "Chipper", came out in 2014 the band had locked down the lineup of Pickels, Cosic, bassist Cameron Smith and second guitarist Ben Green. Production of album #2 began immediately after the release of "Chipper", though it would be four years before the result, "Broadcast Park", saw the light of day in 2018. Since then, the band have gigged and toured regularly, and in October 2019 released a new single, "Work Xmas Party". Recorded live at Sonic Masala Fest in Greenslopes on the 17th of August 2019. Elder: A relatively new but much beloved presence around Brisbane, Elder are fronted by singer/guitarist Matt Burton and backed by Henry Reese on bass and Talia Bond on drums. After playing their first gig together in February 2018, the following month footage of Burton playing a solo cover of the Violent Soho song "Like Soda" at the Milton Markets went viral, raising the profile of the band. Since then they've played regularly around Brisbane, releasing debut EP "Cyril" in December 2018 on Valley Heat Records. Elder were previously featured on Live Delay a year ago in episode 259, but this set features an almost-entirely different collection of songs, a testament the band's restless, creative spirit. Recorded at The Bearded Lady in West End on the 18th of April, 2019.
Tape/Off were in great form on their recent "Vigorous Lover" Aussie tour. It was a gem of a show with The Aerial Maps and Billy Burke supporting. Catch the pics (and a little vid with Tape/Off cameo appearance) from their Sydney Vic On The Park gig las...
Musician/community radio host/audio engineer/local legend Branko Cosic talks to Scott about Simpsons-inspired songwriting, the steady rise of his band Tape/Off and finding his friends at the dearly departed DIY venue The Hangar.
Biscotti: Biscotti is Melbourne based producer and multi instrumentalist Carla Ori’s solo project. While also playing as a part of Empat Lima, Biscotti allows Ori to fashion evocative sounds which create otherworldly landscapes and guide the listener through different scenes. Her first EP titled Make Me Feel Good was released independently in 2013 which lead Biscotti to perform nationally and internationally at music festivals such at Falls Festival, Wide Open Space and Mata Air Festival (Indonesia). Another EP, Alternator, followed in 2015 before the debut long player Like Heaven In The Movies in 2017. Recorded at the PBS FM Studio’s in Melbourne on the 9th of February 2018. Engineered by Owen McKern. Dumb Things: Brisbane hangover pop quintet Dumb Things released their debut self titled album in 2017, signing with French label Hidden Bay Records for its European release. Strong local radio support has seen the band play alongside other Brisbane favourites Tape/Off, Baskervillain, Good Boy and Future Haunts. Recorded at Sonic Masala Fest in Brisbane on the 19th of August 2017. Recorded and mixed by Reuben Aptroot.
Our friend David Karp returns this week to help us wrap up our longest series on Radiohead's longest album. Plus: the end of the tour, Ed's impending solo record, and what's been discovered on those AMSP deluxe edition studio tapes. Look back in two weeks for our first foray into The Eraser!
Gerald Keaney and the Gerald Keaneys: Gerald Keaney and The Gearlad Keaneys is the band of Brisbane philosopher and social activist Dr. Gerald Keaney. They play what could possibly only be referred to as ‘deconstructed pop music’ – which I know doesn’t have the same ring as ‘Grunge’ or ‘trip hop’. Partly sarcastic, mostly satirical, they have an ‘Abbreviated Pop Song’ as well as another ‘Song of Songs’, a witty one about the every-growing concern in the music industry about having too many songs. Sort of, not really but we can agree that Gerald Keaney and The Gerald Keaneys are anti-capitalism without having to resort to Beatles covers or ‘Free Hug’ placards. Recorded by Josh Watson. Mixed by Dusty Anastassiou. Recorded at 4 Layers of Zed, Mar 29 2014. Tape/Off: They’ve been making music under that name since 2009, and all the members are heavily involved in other bands and creative pursuits. Recently they released the first single and accompanying music video from their upcoming album, which is set for release mid year through Sonic Masala. Pedestal Fan is short and sweet, it’s a bit punk without being too rough. To me, it’s got that in common with the best Aussie rock from the 90s and we all know that we do it better than the yanks anyway. Recorded by Matt Hall. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at 4 Layers of Zed, Mar 29 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 9 May 2014. Show production and engineering: Josh Watson.
