The Talking Heads is known as one of the more quirky bands of the 70's and 80's, and terribly innovative in their approach to both music and performance. Consisting of Tina Weymouth on bass, Chris Frantz on drums, Jerry Harrison on keyboards and guitar, and fronted by David Byrne on vocals and guitar, the Talking Heads helped to shape the landscape of alternative and new wave rock through the 80's and 90's. They really hit mainstream consciousness with their fifth album called "Speaking in Tongues" in 1983. They followed this up with the live album "Stop Making Sense," which showcased the elaborate stage setups and their visual presence, complete with Byrne's iconic "big suit" fashion wear.Little Creatures was their sixth studio album and the best selling album of the group's career. The Talking Heads toned down their experimental tendencies on this one in favor of a more stripped-down, accessible approach. While there are still elements of art music and new wave present in the tracks, they play a more whimsical role. The songs blend in pop, folk, and country influences as well, giving the album a bright, catchy feel in addition to the wit and quirkiness for which the group was known. The album cover was created by artist Howard Finster, and incorporates themes of Americana and everyday life. This complemented the songs well, and was selected by Rolling Sone magazine as the album cover of the year. The group would go on to produce two more studio albums before disbanding in 1991. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.Show co-founder Brian Dickhute is back to present this album in Bruce's absence for today's podcast. The Lady Don't MindThere's a certain amount of weirdness that is difficult to explain in the lyrics of just about every Talking Heads song, and this is no exception. This reggae-tinged song talks about a lady who is hard to pin down or figure out. "Last time she jumped out the window, well, she only turned and smiled. You might think she would say something, but you'd have to wait a while." Perfect WorldWhile most songs were written by David Byrne, this one features lyrics composed years earlier by drummer Chris Frantz. It is a deeper cut, and a mini-love story. Stay Up LateThis track was the fourth single released from the album. It is a song about Byrne's sister's baby, and describes an adult keeping the baby up late despite the consequences, just to have fun and enjoy this new life. Road to NowhereThis song was released as a single, and went to number 25 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Byrne describes it as "a song that presented a resigned, even joyful look at doom." The gospel choir that leads off the track was added after the song was concluded to complete what is essentially a two-chord song. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays (from the motion picture Spies Like Us)Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd star in this spy comedy where novice spies are sent into the Soviet Union.STAFF PICKS:West End Girls by Pet Shop BoysLynch starts the staff picks with a song about class and pressures of city life in London, inspired by a T.S. Eliot poem. It was released twice as a single, once in April 1984 when it became a club hit, and this version as a re-recorded single in October 1985. It went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.It's Not Love by DokkenWayne takes us in a more hair metal direction with a head banger tune from Dokken's third album, "Under Lock and Key." This was the third single released from the album. The video contains scenes where the band is playing from a flat bed truck, and was actually recorded on the road. They received several tickets during the process, despite having permission to film.Magic Power by TriumphRob features a Canadian power trio from their live double album, “Stages.” Originally recorded on their studio album, “Allied Forces,” the song describes the healing power of music. It is one of the group's signature songs, and the live format gives a good sense of the band's chemistry on stage.Tonight She Comes by The CarsBrian closes out the staff picks with a previously unreleased song from the Cars' Greatest Hits album, released in October 1985. Ric Ocasek wrote the song, and originally intended it for his solo album, but brought it to the group instead. It was their fourth and last single to be a top 10 hit. ὑπερηφανία, ας, ἡ (hoop-er-ay-fan-ee'-ah) is the phonetic spelling of the original Greek word for “pride”.By the middle of the 12th century, the Old English definition referred to the noun “priden” and defined as "to congratulate (oneself), be proud, indulge in self-esteem;" "be arrogant, act haughtily”.When we think of sexual narcissism, it is an individual or group's unnecessary promotion of their sexual preferences and behaviors. This is the basis for the month of June being celebrated as "pride month".In this rewind from June 2023, episode 25, “Love is Not Love”, I share how love is psychological, biological, and behavioral. Yet, it is often used to promote hypersexuality, premature sexual behaviors, and the promotion of psychological disorders rather than the encouragement of healing.Tonight, listen-in to hear about sexual narcissism as well as what love is and what love is not.In Science & Love,~ Dr. Renee' Carr #WhatIsLove#Psychology#HumanSexuality____________________________

Jesus points out that not all suffering or affliction is the direct result of Sin. When the disciples assumed that the man born blind was being punished because of sin…John 2-3 2 His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi (Teacher), who [a]sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God might be displayed and illustrated in him Scripture is just as clear, however, that sickness may be the direct result of sin. Because some of the Corinthian Christians had abused and unworthily participated in the Lord's Supper, Paul told them, 30 That [careless and unworthy participation] is the reason why many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep [in death] 1 Cor 11:30 Physical weakness, sickness, and even death can result from persistent sinning. When Ananias and Saphira lied to the church about the proceeds from the sale of their property, they also lied to the Holy Spirit. Their wickedness caused them to die on the spot, (Acts 5:1–11). At the end of 1Timothy we hear Paul giving some instruction to Timothy on handing a few tough situations. He reminds him to 'fight the good fight when contending with false teachers, keeping your faith - leaning completely on God and absolute trust and confidence in His guidance, and having a good conscience, for some people have rejected their moral compass and have made a shipwreck of their faith. Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander who I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be disciplined and taught not to blaspheme. - they were expelled from the safety of the church. Perhaps the man did repent. He may be the one spoken of in 2 Corinthians, whom Paul said should be forgiven and comforted and for whom they should reaffirm their love, “in order that no advantage be taken of us by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his schemes” (2:5–11). A disciplined brother is still a brother and is never to be despised, even when unrepentant (2 Thess. 3:14–15). And if he repents, he is to be forgiven and restored in love (Gal. 6:1–2). Idle words: We will be accountable for every idle/careless word. We are held accountable to our WORDS - which the bible helps us to see, are powerful! A follower of Jesus moves into obedience, forfeits the old life, moves into being transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, move into purpose filled living with blessings and let's go of the 'worldly things'. https://biblereasons.com/idle-words/ Jesus said, “I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken” (Matthew 12:36). The KJV translates “every empty word” as “every idle word”; the ESV says, “every careless word.” The Greek phrase is rema argos, meaning “careless or inactive or unprofitable words.” In context, Jesus is contrasting the “good things” within a good person with the “evil things” in the heart of an evil person. We are admonished to make the best use of our words, because words express what is in our hearts: “The mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Matthew 12:34). Other passages give additional insight. Ephesians 4:29 sets the standard: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” James 3:8 advises us on how hard it is to control the tongue: “No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” Then in James 4:11–12, “Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?” Given the weighty consequences of our words—even our “careless” ones—we must learn to yield our body's members, including our tongues, to the control of the Holy Spirit—the only One who can tame the tongue. “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3). Scripture for Jesus talking about demons being cast out of a person, going to dry places, coming back with 7 others finding the house is swept clean. Luke 11 24“When a demon is cast out of a person, it goes to wander in a waterless realm, searching for rest. But finding no place to rest, it says, ‘I will go back and reoccupy the body I left.' 25When it returns, it finds the person like a house swept clean and made tidy, but empty. 26Then it goes and enlists seven demons more evil than itself, and they all enter and possess the person, leaving that one in a much worse state than before.” Destroyer(s) words over HUMANITY are LIES You must know what God says about you, you must know His voice, His word and carry it with you everywhere you go Jesus is the LIGHT Lucifer was the Light BEARER/Bringer Deception - scripture references: https://www.openbible.info/topics/deceivers Counter voice - may sound reassuring but it's very destructive Complaining grows the demonic strength/hold and their logs against you will grow Destroyer brings emptiness and art of distraction and self-focus Keeping us away from God's word and purpose for us Self-worth is IN CHRIST - scripture references: https://bible.knowing-jesus.com/topics/Self-Worth Matthew 22:39-40 37Jesus answered him, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with every passion of your heart, with all the energy of your being, and with every thought that is within you.' 38This is the great and supreme commandment. 39And the second is like it in importance: ‘You must love your friend in the same way you love yourself.' 40Contained within these commandments to love you will find all the meaning of the Law and the Prophets.” How are you going to love others AS you love yourself, if you're not loving yourself? LEARN WHAT LOVE IS (and what it is NOT) Love - agape - unconditional love - this is how we are to love others Why did Jesus need to come to earth? 1 John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil Why did Jesus have to die? Colossians 1:13 For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, Who is the author of Confusion? Conflicts and rebellions have their source in Satan, the author of confusion in both the physical and spiritual worlds. Physical evils in nature and among mankind are among Satan's works that Jesus came to overcome and destroy. Love cannot be divorced from God's Word. In John 17, Jesus said that God's Word is Truth. God's Word is not just "a" truth. It is "THE TRUTH". It is impossible to define what love is apart from God's Word. It is the standard by which we measure everything else. If God and His Word are one, and they are. And if Jesus is God's Word made flesh, and He is. And if Jesus is The Truth, and he is. That means we must take any ideology, teaching, saying or belief about love and measure it by God's Word. If Truth (Jesus) isn't in it...It's Not Love.
What is love? According to the liberal left and the LGBTQ community, Love Is Love. But is that true? According to the Bible that statement is false...it is a lie! Love is NOT Love! The Bible says that God Is Love. The Bible also says that God is Holy. If the love isn't holy...then it is not God's Love and the love that is God. For the next two weeks I am going to be teaching about love. The Bible clearly defines what love is...in fact...it is what the whole Bible is all about!

In today's episode, Matthew and Kim speak to Jason and Therese Benedict, two successful business owners with a unique story. Jason and Therese are co-founders of The Automation Agency. Therese is also an author with an Amazon best-selling novel titled ‘Days Go By, Not Love'. Despite having both faced extraordinarily difficult childhoods, their deep love for each other and great understanding broke the cycle of abuse and neglect. Their marriage has withstood its challenges, but their bond has proven to be unbreakable. Their testimonies are powerful and inspiring.Key Topics: Overcoming childhood hardships Breaking the cycle of abuse and unloving parentsRules and boundaries Self-worthQuotes: “One of the things that Terese and I have always done is we've embraced each other's love and we've embraced the hardships we've embraced the beautiful triumphs but we do it hand in hand.” - Jason“Your childhood does form you and I wouldn't change anything that I've been through I think the challenges and the hardships that I went through helped me to become a stronger person today, it helped me become a better husband, a better lover, it helped me to recognize the lack of love and what that can do to a person.” - Jason“My mom was not loved... So she didn't know how to give the love to love us...so when I had children I wanted to make sure I broke that link.”- Therese “To commit is to never ever take for granted the relationship that we have and the love that is being given. Our love, we are putting in each other's hands and we're asking those hands to make sure that love is safe and taken care of.” - Therese “I believe in no matter what situation you're in or what degree of frustration you are in, be good at biting your lip because it's not worth hurting the person you love because of that moment” Therese “A thought is priceless… when I know Jason is going to be having a really difficult day I'll say ‘okay do you need anything' and then we come up with a plan... ‘If you need anything, text me' even though our offices are side by side.”- Therese “When you have a servant's heart and you put everybody else's needs in front of your needs and your wants, it's the greatest gift you can give to people in your life.” -Jason “I was in abusive situations… but it showed me that it was worth waiting for the right person and I was worth loving” - Therese For access to workshops with professional therapists, keynote speakers, hot seat training and more exclusive content join our online learning community at: https://matthewphoffman.comFollow us:Instagram: @kickasscouplesnationFacebook: @KickasscouplesnationTwitter: @kickasscouplesPre-Order Kickass Husband Kickass Husband: Winning at Life, Marriage, and Sex by Matthew Hoffmanhttps://matthewphoffman.comLeave a review to show your support!

Download this episode Living the Corporal Works of Mercy First thing I want to point out that one of our most recent exemplars of living the corporal works of mercy is St. Teresa of Calcutta. She wasn't a part-timer in this area. She EMBODIED the Corporal works of Mercy. She literally fleshed-out this way of being and living. However, what I am going to talk about are 4 highly essential tips to live the Corporal Works of Mercy. Just like we know that we CANNOT become the saints God has called us to be unless we have a solid prayer life, we cannot be the Catholic we are called to be unless we live the Corporal Works of Mercy. We need to put in the time. TIP #1 I'm sure you already know that so I'm going to start with my FIRST TIP -WHEN to find the time. This is for those who need help in this area. So the first question we need to address is WHEN we are to fulfill a Corporal Work of Mercy. Sometimes we tend to sit back and WAIT for the opportunity to serve. We'll just think to ourselves, “well it's my intention to serve others so I'll keep my eyes open for an opportunity when I see someone in need.” Yes, that's all find and dandy, but this strategy lacks one thing, DECISION. If you choose this way, then you avoid having to make the time and the decision to help. When it comes to the spiritual life, it's both quality AND quantity of your time that matters. Just like any relationship, would you feel content and satisfied for the rest of your life spending only 1 hour a week with your boyfriend, gilfriend, husband, or wife, then to only find their minds were only half way engaged that 1 hour? So do you think we could build a strong relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior spending only a half-hearted hour a week during Mass with Him? When I began to made this comparison in my spiritual life in my early 20's, I began to realize why I couldn't break away from my bouts of depression and anxiety. I didn't have a physiological problem. I had a spiritual problem because of the half-hearted and slothful way I approached everything in my life – especially my Catholic faith. I lacked decision and resolve to build my relationship with Christ. We reap what we sow and, we build this relationship with Christ uniquely through the Love of Neighbor. This is a VERY SPECIAL CALLING. It's one that can ONLY be done in this physical world. Once we leave this world and move on to our eternal reward, we can no longer serve and love in this way. So there's still the question of WHEN. Just like setting aside time to pray, we HAVE TO set aside time live the Corporal Works of Mercy. It's not just about putting it on your schedule. It's about building your life AROUND these precious works of love. Otherwise, it's just a thing to do on your schedule like walking your dog or doing laundry. You know you need to do these things, but your life is not built around them, or at least I hope not. So for example, if you want to feed the homeless twice a week, then make sure every Tuesday and Thursday when you plan to do this, you take care of things you normally would've done at those hours ahead of time. Make sure you get enough sleep for the energy you need and maybe earn a little extra income for supplies, etc. TIP #2 Now this ties into my next tip WHERE SHOULD I SERVE? Now you may say, “well, I just don't know where I fit in or my heart still hasn't led to the place where I feel I should serve.” I totally get that. Finding your “place,” especially when there are so many ways to serve, can be a daunting thing. But there is a danger to be aware of here. To serve should not be based on a FEELING. Because FEELING is NOT LOVE. Our Church tells us that LOVE is a DECISION TO WILL THE GOOD OF THE OTHER. The Catechism of the Catholic Church uses the words Love and Charity interchangeably. Look up the index of the Cathechism online and if you look up “LOVE” it also says “see also Charity.” Let's look at the life of St. Teresa of Calcutta. Once she decided to be obedient to God, she had to make daily choices. I'm sure she was faced with decisions like whether she should stay to feed a hungry child or leave to pick up a dying man on the street. Which would you choose? Which is easier? Which is harder? Here's a little story… As a kid, I would have never believed I'd speak in front of an audience in any capacity. I was too shy to speak in front of anyone in school. I'd make sure to listen to everything the teacher said in class because I was terrified to ask a question. If I did have a question, I'd make sure everyone was gone after class before approaching the teacher. And even that took guts. The very first time I had to speak in front of a group was about 25 years ago. My mom was a CCD teacher and I was her assistant. She had to step out of the class for something urgent and I needed to take over. There were about a dozen middle-schoolers staring at me, waiting for me to say something. I had a panic attacked and I couldn't breathe. When I did have the courage to open my mouth, my voice was quivering and I thought I was to pass out. Luckily my mom walked back in a few minutes later and I was relieved! About 4 years later, God placed the desire in my heart to teach CCD. I signed up and I was placed in a classroom with almost 30 middle-schoolers. But this time was different. In those 4 years, God noticed my desire to do His Will, even with all my failings and imperfections. I learned to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and made the process easy for me. Beginning with helping my mom as a CCD assistant, then having the courage to do His Will and teach my own CCD was the training ground for what I do today. You may say, “well Alexandra, I'm not out to change the world and do something great.” I want to say you are very much mistaken. You ARE meant to change the world and make a big impact. No matter what occupation you choose, whether be a stay-at-home mom or a brain surgeon, your interaction with just 1 person can change THEIR world. You are impacting the world every single day. I heard someone say once that, “somebody in need is waiting on the other side of your obedience.” So please, listen to the simple little callings you get daily. It's not just about the big stuff. Jesus wants to see if He can trust you with the simple things before he places more graces on your soul to serve in a different capacity. So I have a short answer to the question of where. Start with those closest to you. If your mother-in-law or someone close to you is ill, don't say, “well she or he's given me hell for 30 years, they deserve to be suffering the way they are, it's out of my hands.” Or, “they were alcoholics and wife beaters, it's their own fault so I don't want to help there.” I say… that's a perfect place to start, LOVE THE UNLOVEABLE, AND BE CHARITABLE EVEN WHEN YOU DON'T FEEL LIKE IT. CHARITY BEGINS IN THE HEART. We need to be OBSESSED with wanting to fulfill our purpose for the love of God. TIP #3 My next tip is to commit for a SPECIFIC PERIOD OF TIME. Once you've decided on where you want to begin serving, my next tip is to decide for how long you want serve in that way. Let's say you want to visit the sick in hospitals. Check with your parish to see if they have a hospital ministry to coordinate with them. Commit for a certain period of time, let's say 30-60 days. That way, you have freedom to stop and reflect on your experience and decide whether you want to continue or change direction. Maybe the Holy Spirit will call you to serve somewhere else. He will open the doors and guide your steps if you leave yourself open to God's will, not your own. Committing to a specific period of time will give you the freedom to choose and give God the freedom to direct you where He needs you to be. TIP #4 My final and, most important tip, is to discern WHY. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS? Why are you here? Is it because it makes you feel good? Is it because so want others to see how good of a person you are? Because you know that the Bible tells us that we will reap what we sow, do you expect God to grant your wishes, answer your prayers, or give you consolations in exchange for your service? When you serve, do you expect to see the fruits of your labor immediately and be showered with gratitude? If it's for any of those reasons then your service will be short-lived. Once the feel-good and glamour wears off will you abandon the CALL? Or are you in this for the love of God? In the midst of St. Teresa's dark and lonely moments, while serving the poorest of the poor. Do you not think she was tempted to abandon the life-long task Jesus asked of her? You will be challenged and you WILL be tempted to abandon your calling as well. I can guarantee that. What do you think kept St. Teresa going? It was the quality and quantity of time she had spent building a relationship with our Lord Jesus. It was her fervent prayer life. Abandoning her call meant abandoning Jesus. She built her relationship with Him through her service for others. Every action she took, from feeding the hungry to comforting the dying was a prayer to Jesus. They were not just actions for the sake of helping, but movements of the heart for the love of Jesus. Just imagine what will your relationship with God look like if you spent 1 hour a week serving through the Corporal Works of Mercy. Imagine what it would look like if you did this for 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years? That is not including the lives you will touch through your generous compassion and charity. Imagine what your life will look like in 1, 3, or 5 years from now if you didn't fulfill your calling? Like I said earlier, there is somebody waiting on the other side of your obedience. I will conclude this talk with Matthew 6:1-4 “[But] take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you." Heavenly Father, Thank you for allowing me to share in the Mercy that flows through your precious heart through the Corporal Works of Mercy. Lord, you know many times I fail to be a light to those in need. Send me the grace to serve people with greater needs than my own – both the lovable and unlovable. Please help me to see that I am enough, even in my brokenness, to be your instrument of Mercy. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle… Most Sacred Heart of Jesus… Have Mercy on Us. Our Lady of Sorrows… Pray for us. Saint Joseph… Pray for us. Saint Therese of Lisieux… Pray for us. Saint Teresa of Calcutta… Pray for us. Our guardian angels… Watch over us In the name of the Father… My dearest Catholic Servants, please don't hesitate to let me know your special intentions so we can pray for you during our next family Rosary. Love in your marriage is built on the art of patience. As the Bible says, "Love is patient. Love is kind." Why do you think it was written in that order? Because by human nature, we fall short. Therefore, no relationship will be perfect except for the baggage we bring each day from our shortcomings. Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. http://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact We all meet that perfection on a daily basis unfortunately. But God challenges us. He is patient with us. Hence, He expects us to be patient in our marriage. "Love is patient. Love is kind." ~ 1 Corinthians 13:4 Now let's first paint a picture of what patience is not. Imagine you are listening to your spouse complain about something or yelling at you directly. When all is said, you walk out. Nothing said. Do you think that is patience? Some would say yes. But actually, it is not mirroring the patience God shows us. Instead, listen with an empathetic ear in order to understand how your spouse is feeling on the inside. Ok. Hold on. I understand how you might be feeling. He has no right to speak to me that way. Yes, there is a difference from having a disagreement and heated discussion than verbal abuse in a marriage. I experienced this yesterday with my husband. He was raising his voice as we discussed a situation that was not life or death, but urgent. But what I caught myself doing was taking his frustration that had nothing to do with me, and internalize it as he was yelling at me. Honestly, he really wasn't. Yes his tone of voice had a bite, and his volume was greater than normal. But it wasn't about me. That was my take on it. So then what happened? With my lack of patience, I became defensive and that brought no quick resolution to the pressing issue. UGH!!! This is NOT "Love is patient." If you want to build a strong foundation in your marriage, you must master the art of patience. That translates into listening with God's heart. The K.I.S.S. ~ Listen with God's heart! Shut your mouth. Open your ears. Understand your spouse's perspective. Love them where they're at. "No strings-attached" love (unconditional love). The art of patience is listening with God's heart. Myriad elements contributing to chaos and human suffering are listed extensively and identified so listeners can begin to inventory their personal notes of attunement.
Encouragement For Each Maturity Level 1 John 2:12-14 – This is a passage that has puzzled a lot of people over the years. There is some repetition here, but enough differences that you notice them. It's Not Love, It's Just Paris (Grove Press) Join us as Patricia Engel reads from her debut novel It's Not Love, It's Just Paris, a vibrant, wistful narrative about an American girl in Paris, who navigates the intoxicating and treacherous complexities of independence, friendship, and romance. Lita del Cielo, the daughter of two Colombian orphans who arrived in America with nothing and made a fortune with their Latin food empire, has been granted one year to pursue her studies in Paris before she must return to work in the family business. She moves into a gently crumbling Left Bank mansion known as “The House of Stars,” where a spirited but bedridden Countess Séraphine rents out rooms to young women visiting Paris to work, study, and, unofficially, to find love. Cautious and guarded, Lita keeps a cool distance from the other girls, who seem at once boldly adult and impulsively naïve, who both intimidate and fascinate her. Then Lita meets Cato, and the contours of her world shift. Charming, enigmatic, and weak with illness, Cato is the son of a notorious right-wing politician. As Cato and Lita retreat to their own world, they soon find it difficult to keep the outside world from closing in on theirs. Ultimately Lita must decide whether to stay in France with Cato or return home to fulfill her immigrant family's dreams for her future. Praise for Patricia Engel: “With unsparing psychological precision . . . Engel has fashioned . . . an arresting voice: immediate, unsentimental, and disarmingly direct.”–Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times Patricia Engel's short story collection, Vida, a The New York Times 100 Notable Books of the Year, established her as one of this country's best young writers, winning praise from Junot Díaz, Uzodinma Iweala, Francisco Goldman, and others. She has been widely published and has won numerous awards, including the Boston Review Fiction Prize. She lives and teaches in Miami, Florida.
