Notes Introduction and DC vs Marvel Omnibus (00:00 - 09:43) Case Aiken and Jmike Folson welcome Discord community member Logan Crowley as guest Discussion focuses on recently published DC versus Marvel omnibus The group plans to discuss Silver Surfer Superman crossover from the 90s Logan mentions it feels surreal to be on the podcast as a fan Ron Lim highlighted as perfect artist for Silver Surfer comics George Perez noted as writer for this issue (though the hosts prefer his art to his writing) Logan shares touching personal story about meeting George Perez at a convention Comic Setting and Character Power Levels (09:43 - 19:59) The comic features 90s 'Triangle era' Superman (post-Crisis, post-death) Superman is at his weakest power level compared to extremely powerful Silver Surfer Creative team: George Perez (writer) and Ron Lim (artist) Comic establishes two separate realities (Marvel and DC as different multiverses) The Contessa appears instead of Lex Luthor (specific to this Superman era) Silver Surfer's immense power emphasized - 'strides light year after light year in mere seconds' Silver Surfer discovers mysterious, rapidly evolving planet that shouldn't exist Plot Setup and Character Situations (19:59 - 29:44) Superman finds himself apparently on Krypton (with John Byrne-style mushroom dress designs) Silver Surfer crash lands in Metropolis and causes destruction with his powers Superman's powers begin to fade due to mental blocks related to the red sun Superman realizes he's not actually on Krypton and his powers return Introduction of Klert the Super Skrull as Superman's opponent (though it's a fake-out) Discussion of how the 90s-era Superman depiction differs from other versions Surfer in the Fortress and Character Revelations (29:44 - 39:35) Silver Surfer enters what appears to be Superman's Fortress of Solitude The Fortress attacks Surfer, first formally then with humor Mix of Fortress of Solitude and Batcave elements (dinosaur robot, giant coin) Superman realizes he's not actually fighting the real Super Skrull Brief glimpse of 'spaghetti-headed aliens' reveals the deception Superman punches 'Super Skrull' while shouting 'Game over imp' - suspecting Mr. Mxyzptlk Silver Surfer discovers Metropolis is bottled like the city of Kandor
In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Patchen Barss chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about his choices while crafting The Impossible Man: Roger Penrose and the Cost of Genius, the biography of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Roger Penrose. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Patchen Barss's painstaking research strategy How Patchen grasped complicated information about quantum physics and mathematics How he crafted erudite, poetic and propulsive narrative from seemingly incomprehensible scientific information and mathematical equations How he balanced Roger Penrose's scientific, public, personal and inner lives to craft a kaleidoscopic portrait of an extraordinary human being How he represented Roger's relationship difficulties truthfully and with sensitivity and dignity How Patchen navigated the perils of writing about a 93-year-old living subject who has a strong autobiographical voice Patchen's response to the question: ‘Who gets to be a genius, and who makes the sacrifices that allow an individual to be one?'

When he was six years old, Roger Penrose discovered a sundial in a clearing near his house. Through that machine made of light, shadow, and time, Roger glimpsed a “world behind the world” of transcendently beautiful geometry. It spurred him on a journey to become one of the world's most influential mathematicians, philosophers, and physicists. Penrose would prove the limitations of general relativity, set a new agenda for theoretical physics, and astound colleagues and admirers with the elegance and beauty of his discoveries. However, as Patchen Barss documents in The Impossible Man: Roger Penrose and the Cost of Genius (Basic Books, 2024), success came at a price: He was attuned to the secrets of the universe, but struggled to connect with loved ones, especially the women who care for or worked with him. Both erudite and poetic, The Impossible Man draws on years of research and interviews, as well as previously unopened archives to present a moving portrait of Penrose the Nobel Prize-winning scientist and Roger the human being. It reveals not just the extraordinary life of Roger Penrose, but asks who gets to be a genius, and who makes the sacrifices that allow one man to be one. Learn more about your ad choices. Music has always been a part of Todd Hearon's life and following a brief break for other creative pursuits, he's returned with a three-part album release and in this interview, we dive right into what this is all about. The Texas-born songwriter goes into the story behind his most recent release, “Impossible Man” and how it follows his 2021 and 2023 albums, “Border Radio” and “Yodelady.” We also talk about his musical hiatus to go to grad school in Boston and co-found The Bridge Theater Company, an independent troupe in Boston's Theater District. Todd shares how his poetry and other writings blend with his music, and gives us the story behind Myrtle, his 1950 Gibson J-50. Opening the interview is an excerpt from “Guillotine” and closing things out is the song “Looking Glass,” both of which are from the new album.

In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the third attempted large scale alien invasion in as many weeks. These aliens seem as powerful as the Impossible Man, but there were a lot more of them in this invasion. They debate whether Thor was only involved because he was acting at Donald Blake's bodyguard, and whether any of these shape-changing aliens are still among us.In this issue:Aliens from the planet Xarta decide to travel from another galaxy to invade the Earth for some reason. The Xartans can change their shape to impersonate others, and they use these abilities to replace various highly placed people in New York City and have them act erratically, thereby throwing the city into chaos. Thor notices that people are acting strangely and decides to investigate. He finds a Xartan ship, and he is then separated from his hammer for more than 60 seconds, which causes him to revert to his Donald Blake form. Thor, as Blake, is captured by the Xartans, who explain their invasion plan to him. First, they cause chaos through a complicated body snatching plan; and second, they invade with their space ships. The Xartans are tricked by Blake into letting him secretly turn into Thor, who then battles the two leading Xartans and defeats them, which leads to the mighty Xartan fleet hovering above Earth's atmosphere to leave. Thor then commands the remaining four Xartans from the landing party to turn into trees, condemning them to long, dull lives as non-sentient plants.Assumed before the next episode:The world has learned of this latest alien invasion and are left to wonder why the Xartans didn't just invade with their superior galaxy-hopping technology. This episode takes place:After the failed Xartan invasion. In this episode:Mike and Ed discuss the attempted invasion by the Impossible Man. As bad as it was, how much worse would it be if a full army of these incredibly powerful aliens arrived? Should we be creating a global defense shield against future alien attacks? In this issue:In today's meta-news, this comic book opens with the Fantastic Four walking by a newsstand as excited men, women, and children clamber to buy the latest Fantastic Four comic book. They briefly interact with their fans before returning home to the Baxter Building, whereupon Reed and Ben recount their friendship over the years. They recount their fateful rocket ship adventure which led to them, as well as Sue and Johnny Storm, flying through a cosmic storm and transforming into super-powered adventurers. The story continues with the introduction of the Impossible Man from the planet Poppup. He arrives on Earth and demonstrates his amazing powers to turn into anything he wants, with impish glee. The Fantastic Four are called into service by the police to deal with the childish menace posed by the Impossible Man. They find that they cannot defeat them head on, which leads to Reed telling the world to just ignore him so that he will go away, which he does.Assumed before the next episode:The world is united, briefly, in joy and satisfaction over their repulsion of the Impossible Man by treating him as an unruly infant. This episode takes place:After Reed Richards has recounted their origin story, and also after their adventure with the Impossible Man. Jace continues the Thanos reading order by taking a look at Silver Surfer #36 from 1990. The first half of the issue has the Surfer visiting the Avengers to learn as much as he can about his new foe Thanos. Captain America fills him in on their past dealing with the Mad Titan, but is very disappointed to hear that Thanos has returned and has plans to destroy half the universe. The second half of the issue is an interesting and humorous encounter with the Impossible Man. What purpose this might serve in the Surfer's fight against Thanos, we don't yet know.

EPISODE 3: SILVER SURFER AND SUPERMAN #1 Connor-El and Rey-Zod return to discuss a very different tale for our Man of Steel. This time around, we look at a one-shot pitting two titans of two giant universes - Marvel and DC! The Last Sons look at the similarities between the Silver Surfer and Superman; do an in depth review of the story as written by George Perez, and look at the background of Perez and his involvement both with the cosmic universes of both Marvel and DC... There's plenty to love here and the Last Sons have a blast with this one! Surprises aplenty; expectations denied....the universe works in mysterious ways! CREDITS: Silver Surfer / Superman Released November 1996 Writer: George Perez Artist: Ron Lim Inker: Terry Austin Colourist: Tom Smith Letterer: John Costanza Executive Editor: Mike Carlin SYNOPSIS: Written by Rey-Zod Superman surveils the city of Metropolis, scouring the streets for any sign of trouble. All seems in order, and even the prying eyes of the Contessa from Lexcorps doesn’t seem to faze the Man of Steel. As she plots to keep eyes on the Kryptonian, he suddenly disappears into thin air with a little ‘Pop’. In another universe, altogether, the Silver Surfer comes across a planet which he has never seen before in all his cosmic travels. Although it seems uninhabited and a ball of fire and molten lava, the Surfer senses voices pleading for someone to save them. Before he can do anything, he too disappears with a sudden ‘pop’. Both mighty figures appear to have traded places and now inhabit each others’ universe. Superman at first thinks he’s landed in Krypton, but it soon becomes apparent that all is not what it seems. A quick encounter with the locals culminates in Superman finding himself face to face with another adversary - one familiar within the Marvel Universe - the Super Skrull! The Silver Surfer appears to have landed on Earth though he senses it is not of the same universe of which he is familiar. The Surfer immediately gets attacked upon by robotic defence units whilst the citizens flee in terror. The Surfer’s powers appear haywire, but he manages to still control his board and with it he soars high into the sky, hoping to reach orbit. To his surprise, outer space is missing, and in it’s stead, he crashes through what appears to be a barrier enveloping Earth. Back with Superman, the fight with the Super Skrull rages - and Superman appears to be beat. The Super Skrull let’s slip of a ‘game’ in which he’s involved and this is enough for Superman to gain a sniff of what is really going on. No longer afraid and apparently vulnerable to the Skrull’s attack, Superman delivers a knockout blow. It so happens Superman’s suspicions are incorrect too, as he believes it’s Mxyzptlk… he is indeed wrong and surprised when he finds out it is none other than the Impossible Man! The Surfer discovers he has actually freed himself from a miniature city encased in glass and finds himself in some sort of unknown dimension. He peers in towards the glass casing, whilst the miniature citizens look in horror at the silver behemoth. It’s not long before he is set upon by droids and dinosaurs and Norrin Radd soon figures out it is not a mechanised program, but a living entity which is playing a deadly game. The Impossible Man reveals to Superman the motives behind the game - both he and MxyzPtlk have plotted together to form a game to entertain themselves, with Superman and Silver Surfer as their main pieces. Each are to convince their targets they they are the ones behind the mayhem and the Impossible Man claims the prize with his manipulation of Superman. In the distance, both eye off an armada which seems to be heading their way - an armada of Skrulls! The miniature citizens of Metrpolis are in a state of panic as their world appears to be crashing down on them. The Impossible Man is maddened by this as one of the rules was that no one would get hurt. Having felt that MXYZPTLK is breaking the rules, the Impossible Man goes head to head against MXYZPTLK and a flurry of Marvel and DC characters collide as the two powerful beings continually change forms as they fight. When it’s all he can take, the Silver Surfer transforms the Impossible Man to a form of Superman to cease the bickerings between the reality changing beings and calls for reason. The Surfer and the Impossible Man trick MXYZPTLK to bring Superman to the unknown dimension where they all are, and with all four of them together the Surfer calls the game forfeit. With the game seemingly over, the Surfer offers to return the city to it’s rightful scale and location, whilst Superman convinces MXYZPTLK to assist with Impossible Man to bring them back to their rightful universes. Metropolis is restored and once again MXYZPTLK is tricked into allowing both Superman and Silver Surfer to return to the Surfer’s universe to deal with the Skrulls. His fearsome reputation makes short work of the armada and the Surfer vows to protect the planet known as Bridoon from now on. With one final gesture, Superman is then returned to his rightful universe, with MXYZPTLK under obligation due to a technical loophole. The Two titans say their goodbyes, knowing full well that their memories of the adventure will fade. Both the Impossible Man and MXYZPTLK depart too, seen bickering and heckling each other to the bitter end. As the Silver Surfer rides into the distance, he smiles at what had just passed and what had been accomplished. It’s not long before the memory fades, as do the two reality warping entities...and with their disappearance, a small pop is heard. God also amplifies Touya's physical, magical, and cognitive abilities to a certain degree as a further apology for the inconvenience of killing him. George Perez Saves Stan Lee! Hello, and welcome to episode 240 of The Fantasticast. Each week, Steve Lacey and Andy Leyland guide you through every issue, guest-appearance and cameo of The Fantastic Four. This week, we're arriving at the much-anticipated Fantastic Four #176, in which The Impossible Man shatters the fourth wall, causing havoc and mayhem in the Marvel Bullpen. With a Jack Kirby cover inspiring the action, Roy Thomas, George Perez and Joe Sinnott pull out all the stops, puncturing egos and giving cameos to just about everyone in the Bullpen. Joining us for this madcap comic is frequent podcast e-mailer, comic book inker, and lifelong Fantastic Four fan Charles Yoakum. Together, we attempt to identify every single creator cameo, play a round of Starlin or Salicrup, and try and squeeze the entire show through Steve's Poppuppian filter. (It's a joke about an important piece of podcasting equipment, you see.) (Not, admittedly, a very good joke.) (Ah, well...) Welcome back to Baxter Building, the podcast reading through the first 416 issues of the Fantastic Four! Today, Graeme McMillan and Jeff Lester put on the sparring gloves over Fantastic Four issues #171 through #184 by Roy Thomas, George Perez, John Buscema, Ron Wilson, Sal Buscema, Gerry Conway, Bill Mantlo, and the ever-steadfast Joe Sinnott. Yes, one of our hosts thinks there is a lot of fun here in this batch of issues with admittedly a poorly timed dud issue...and the other person thinks the majority of these stories are trainwreck on fire. Who is right? Tune in and decide for yourself, as well as hear about the return of Galactus, the debut of Gorr, The Golden Gorilla, the invasion of the Impossible Man, the attack of the Brute and much, much more in the two-plus hour podcast. Show notes eagerly await you at waitwhatpodcast.com, we welcome your comments and questions at WaitWhatPodcast@gmail.com, and we invite you to look out for us on Twitter, Tumblr, and Patreon!

The Lee/Kirby stories of the Silver Age are a tough act to follow, but the Fantastic Four in the Bronze Age has a lot to offer the interested reader as well, as this episode endeavors to prove! Inside you'll find scripts by Thomas and Conway, pencils by Perez and Pollard and Buckler and Buscema, and covers by Kirby; Medusa and Luke Cage as substitute FFers; Earth (TWO of 'em!) under siege by Galactus; the emergence of Franklin Richards' powers; the menace of Overmind; the courtship of Crystal and Quicksilver; the return of the Impossible Man; the deposition of Dr. Doom; and other '70s sensations sampled from the second 100 issues of the World's Greatest Comic Magazine. Excelsior! (1:52:38)

Through a partnership with Iambik Audiobooks, we bring you the first chapter of Andrew Kaufman's novel All My Friends Are Superheroes, published by Coach House Books. Gordon Mackenzie reads the chapter aloud. All Tom's friends really are superheroes. There's the Ear, the Spooner, the Impossible Man. Tom even married a superhero, the Perfectionist. But at their wedding, the Perfectionist was hypnotized (by ex-boyfriend Hypno, of course) to believe that Tom is invisible. Nothing he does can make her see him. So she's moving to Vancouver. She'll use her superpower to make Vancouver perfect and leave all the heartbreak in Toronto. With no idea Tom's beside her, she boards an airplane in Toronto. Tom has until the wheels touch the ground in Vancouver to convince her he's visible, or he loses her forever.
