The Bearded Lady, Zip the Pinhead, Major Tom Thumb, The Elephant Man, The Hottentot Venus - we delve into one of the more controversial corners of popular entertainment: the world of Victorian freak shows — where the abnormal, the extraordinary, and the misunderstood were paraded as spectacle and sold as wonder. But who were these so-called “freaks” - vulnerable human oddities driven to make a living the only way they could, cictims of exploitation, or pioneers of performance who found power in their difference? We're joined by Dr. John Jacob Woolf, historian and author of 'The Wonders: Lifting the Curtain on the Freak Show, Circus and Victorian Age', a book that offers a deeply researched, empathetic, and eye-opening look at the lives behind the wonderful posters, at the performers who captivated crowds and challenged Victorian notions of normality. We explore Freakery and ask who are the modern freaks? Who do we gawp, marvel and laugh at? New episode out now! We watched the first episode of the ‘90s British mystery series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, titled “The Bearded Lady”. We discuss the character of Hetty and how she feels a little bit different than other characters who fit the “older lady who solves mysteries” description, and have differing opinions on whether or not we even like her. We try to figure out what actually happened in the episode with varying success, wonder if audiences are treated more with kid gloves nowadays, get confused by science experiments, and disagree on whether Dominic Monaghan has an “English cheekiness” quality but enjoyed him as the teen sidekick anyway. Katy tries to make excuses for Hetty and fails, Carrie does not want anyone in her home, Maddy harkens back to MapQuest days, and Mack shares a childhood memory. We also make fun of our mental scripts for hosting, would not put anything past the ruling class, reminisce about watching LOST live on air, and love libraries. Listen to hear more about Bluey, children being used by detectives, shrimp paste, and Scooby-Doo. Enjoy!TW: Scientific experimentation without consent, hormonal changes, difficulties of being an unhoused person, censorship of trans people, mention of human sterilization

This week the group goes around the horn to talk about Fatty's idea to buy a bar in New Jersey which Sarcastro suggests rebranding as The Bearded Lady which leads into an update on Fatty's septic system at his cabin and then into his poor choice of making a public restroom faux pas. Corporal shares his poor choice of the week of overdoing it in setting up his garden that led to some rough hands and old man soreness. This leads into an unexpected home gardening discussion in which Sarcastro and Banky learn that Fatty and Corporal are basically pepper professors. Intro and Outro music written and performed by Andrés Rodríguez (Androzguitar).

In Part 2, we hear about Chloe's first photo show, which took place at The Bearded Lady. Chloe describes The Bearded Lady as a hub, a place to do and get everything you could possibly need. It and the Kiki Gallery next door were both on 14th Street near Guerrero. Another queer artist, Cathy, liked Chloe's show and suggested that she go to art school. And so Chloe got into San Francisco Art Institute. She had a darkroom at her home and sometimes printed at Harvey Milk Photo Center in Duboce Park. But she was able to do so much at her school. At this point in the podcast, Chloe and I talk about photo editing and what that process was like in the analog film days. I name-drop Photoworks and Chloe mentions the photo labs at Macy's, then we end with Chloe's acknowledgement that people are embracing film again. I ask Chloe about the 2000s. Her daughter was born and they left The City, finding a new home in the East Bay to raise her kid. With the shift from film to digital, Chloe struggled to keep up and her life priorities changed. We talk about so many places that were important to the queer, dyke, and lesbian scenes closing in the Millennium. People from that scene started having kids and some pursued careers in other cities. Many wanted more space and couldn't get it in The City. The Dotcom boom happened, and folks were bought out or got priced out. That leads to a sidebar on the recent resurgence we're seeing here in San Francisco. There's Mother Bar of course, where we recorded, and Chloe mentions other new queer art spaces like Schlomer Haus Gallery. We wonder whether the pandemic was a correction event. The conversation shifts to how Chloe's photo book, Renegades, came about. Early in the pandemic, when everyone stayed home, her daughter came back from college to live with her. Her daughter saw Chloe's photos and told her to start an Instagram account. She did, but of course her daughter set it all up. They scanned many, many photos and started to post. The reaction was endearing and intense and overwhelming, she says. Chloe says it was like a high school reunion, with so many of her friends from the Nineties reemerging in her life on social media. The aforementioned Schlomer Haus Gallery saw what was happening and reached out looking for queer artists to show in their new space on Market. And so Chloe got a solo show in 2022. That show, Renegades San Francisco: The 1990s, set the stage for her book of the same name. That 2022 experience was still so new to her. But at the show's opening, people reconnected with one another and the work took on a life of its own. Chloe says people were in tears. They took photos of their photos that were in the show. 300+ people attended the opening that night and many of those went to the after party at Mothership Bar on Mission. "We all just showed up like nothing ever happened," Chloe says. Younger people at the opening told her, "This is why I moved to San Francisco," speaking to the scenes depicted in Chloe's photos. Renegades San Francisco: The 1990s the book is available at local bookstores like City Lights, Fabulosa Books, SFMOMA, and Green Apple. It's also available online. Go to Chloe's website for more info. We end Part 2 with Chloe's interpretation of our theme this season: "We're all in it." There's a special shout-out to photobooths. Follow Chloe on Instagram to stay up to date on shows and book signings. Photography by Jeff Hunt

Having PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) has caused me to deal with unwanted facial hair ever since I was a freshman in high school. I knew I was a Carnie folk in a past life, I just didn't want to be The Bearded Lady. Then, I was asked to audition for the role of The Bearded Lady...twice. And instead of focusing on the craft, the acting, being in the moment, I allowed being called "Sideburn Lady" in high school take precedence over being in the moment. I learned my lesson and am still dealing with unwanted facial hair. Hell, I'm still actually learning all the lessons. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/whosdatphatgirl/support
In this edition of his Search for Meaning podcast, Stephen Wise Temple Senior Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback hosts Josh Klausner, who, in addition to being Rabbi Yoshi's college roommate, is a screenwriter, playwright, and director.Klausner's writing credits include Wanderland (2018), Date Night (2010), and Shrek Forever After (2010). He's also worked as a second unit director on Dumb and Dumber (1994), Kingpin (1996), There's Something About Mary (1998), Me, Myself, and Irene (2000), Shallow Hall (2001), and Green Book (2018).While Klausner aspired to be an actor, his early interest in poetry and his dissatisfaction with the plays he read during his college years led him down the path to becoming a writer. His thesis advisor at Princeton wound up being none other than Tony Kushner, a four-time Oscar nominee who's won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a Tony Award for Best Play, and has collaborated with Steven Spielberg on Munich (2005), Lincoln (2012), West Side Story (2021), and The Fabelmans (2022).Fascinated by the immediacy and intimacy of theater and the moments just before sleep, and trying to process his own parents' divorce, one of his first works was a two-act play about divorce from the point of view of two brothers. A pre-ordination Rabbi Yoshi had a part in that play, Brothers of the Bearded Lady. Using one's own written work to process is far from an alien concept for Rabbi Yoshi, who does so with many of his sermons. The two discuss how writing can be a powerful way to work through ideas, concepts, and emotions, and a way to see older ideas in a new light as they are revisited years later in a different context. Through this lens, they discuss regret, life choices, personal discovery, and more in a deeply personal and philosophical conversation.

Please support the podcast by taking Airwave's short listener survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/airwave. ______ Today, gender is largely understood as a fluid concept. And while an increasingly loud minority insist that "men are men and women are women," and that's simply the way it's always been…a look through the lens of art history is just one way to quickly realize how flawed that worldview just might be. Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652) provides that lens in his 1631 portrait of Magdalena Ventura, subtitled 'The Bearded Woman.' Is this a depiction of a woman boldly defying gender norms? Or simply a person existing with the hand they were dealt by nature? Today's Image: Jusepe de Ribera, Magdalena Ventura with Her Husband and Son (La Mujer Barbuda) (1631). "Honesty is hardly ever heard." - Billy Joel Don't worry, we're not going all Billy Joel on you, but this week we're talking about the songs where honesty is heard loud and clear. True to this week's theme, we are elated to be joined by the brilliant writer Allison Landa, whose recently published memoir, Bearded Lady, is unflinchingly honest, bold, brave, vulnerable, funny-as-heck, and always engaging. Through Allison's eyes and sharp pen, we are all encouraged to find - and embrace - what makes us weird. Hey, we may not be Oprah and/or Michelle Obama, but this one is definitely endorsed by the O3L Book Club! Allison is also a friend of Brett's from high school, so that makes it extra special to have her on the show (Go Titans! Or Trojans! Or whatever!). Plus, Allison and Uncle Gregg battle it out in our latest world famous game, O3L Lie Detector! We also talk yogurt, chorizo, our ideal Lost Weekends, Danny Bonaduce, Carly Rae Jepsen, and why Gregg shouldn't always follow his "policy of truth." Oh, and there's smut. Lots and lots of smut. We guarantee that this one will bring a smile to your face. C'mon...would WE lie to you? For more information on Allison Landa and Bearded Lady, visit: https://www.woodhallpress.com/bearded-lady
What exactly is #PCOS and Hirsutism? This week we chat with Gennevieve Valliancourt aka Bearded Lady G. Gennevieve started growing facial hair at the age of 16 and tried to hide it for many years. After many trials and tribulations, she finally decided to let it grow, embarking on a inspiring journey of self love and acceptance. Hear Gennevieve talk about how she got to that place and what she's doing now to help other women with PCOS do the same.
Today, I'm joined by Allison Landa, writer and educator, to discuss the themes in her memoir, Bearded Lady. At the age of ten, Allison was diagnosed with congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which is a genetic hormonal condition that creates dark, obvious facial hair and other symptoms. We talk about the role of her mom in hiding her condition, Allison's process for accepting herself and opening up to the world, and why it's so important to recognize that everyone is going through a personal battle. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, Castbox, or on your favorite podcast platform. Topics Covered:● What congenital adrenal hyperplasia is and how it was expressed in Allison ● Allison's conflicting feelings when she discovered her mother had the same condition ● The incredible catharsis that Allison felt when she told her partner about her diagnosis ● How Allison became comfortable and confident enough to open up to the world about her experience with congenital adrenal hyperplasia● The kindness that comes from understanding that everyone is going through something Guest Info:● Order your copy: Bearded Lady: When You're a Woman with a Beard, Your Secret is Written All Over Your Face ● Allison's Website ● Allison's Instagram Follow Me:● My Instagram ● My LinkedIn● My Twitter● Art Heals All Wounds Website● Art Heals All Wounds Instagram● Art Heals All Wounds Twitter ● Art Heals All Wounds Facebook● Art Heals All Wounds Newsletter

PT Barnum was an American circus promoter, best known for his collection of "human freaks" such as Ang and Chang Bunker, the Four Legged Lady, the Bearded Lady and the Human Skeleton. But for most of his life he didn't work in a circus, he was a museum owner who built a museum in New York City. PT Barnum was also the inspiration for the movie The Greatest Showman, which all our moms liked. But he was also a congressman, one of America's first millionaires and a pretty smart dude at the end of the day. He also bought the Fiji Mermaid and live in New York.
