Stu Watts chats with Becki Whitton, who is an engineer, songwriter and producer working out of Melbourne's Carriage Studio. Her approach in the studio balances focus and ease, and centres on a thirst to find the most powerful expression of a song's emotional core. Becki has received ARIA, AWMA, MPEG and Music Victoria Award nominations for her sound work, and managed sound for Girls Rock! Camp ACT from 2016-2022. In her solo electronic choral project Aphir, Becki has been hailed as part of ‘Australia's new wave of female electronic innovators' and has performed around Australia and internationally including performances at Music Tech Fest (Berlin), Denmark Arts (WA), and Falls Festival. Since 2016, Becki has released music through experimental label Provenance Records, founded by Stuart Buchanan (New Weird Australia) and, following Buchanan's departure from the label, turned Provenance into an artist cooperative in 2021. Throughout 2020 - 2021 Becki embraced the challenges of pandemic lockdown through live-streaming on Twitch - first producing, recording, and mixing her 2020 LP, Republic of Paradise on livestream, and then pursuing marathon-length vocal improvisations on Twitch throughout 2021, culminating in a 12-hour performance on Boxing Day that year. Becki has been actively involved in the left-field music community through the creation of The Wettest 100 - an alternative to Triple J's Hottest 100 which was voted on Instagram and which celebrated 100 Australian tracks (narrowed down from 185 nominations) which sit outside the genre-world of the Hottest 100 countdown. Becki's sixth LP, ‘The Halo Is Shapeless', was released under her Aphir moniker in May 2023. After a slow start to the year due to extended government pandemic restrictions, the Australian live business burst back with encouraging figures. The response from industry leaders was that the domestic live sector is going into a golden era. Promoters and venue operators are not only expecting a solid return in 2023, but a robust 2024 as well. Looking at the Pollstar results, it is obvious the promoters and venues who took planning risks in the last few years of lockdown are now reaping the benefits. Meanwhile, Australian summer festival favourite Lost Paradise has announced a different kind of lineup. Organisers of the Central Coast event have just unveiled an extensive health and wellness program for this year's New Years bash, dubbed Shambhala Fields. It lines up an array of health, wellness and music-based workshops, talks, First Nations spaces and more, featuring some big names including: Triple j science guru Dr Karl master yogi Simon Borg-Olivier classically-trained dancer model and social media star Mimi Elashiry Byron Hinterlands-Bundjalung region based artist radio host Luen and many more! Described as an “oasis for boundary-pushing thinkers where curiosity is key”, the Shambhala Fields program will be packed with: Yoga classes belly dancing workshops deep tissue massages and countless other mind, body and soul-nourishing activities, in keeping with the festival's proud reputation as a place for exchanging future-facing ideas. There will be a cultural program completely orchestrated by First Nation Australians from Darkinjung country, as well as essential growth offering, Healing Haven, which will offer tarot card readings, acupuncture and loads more. This is all, of course, in addition to the Lost Paradise music lineup, which shares many artists in common with the 2022-23 Falls Festival, including headliners Arctic Monkeys, Lil Nas X, Peggy Gou and Jamie xx. It's no great secret that Glass Animals are a band who have steadily charmed the world with their affable and dreamy take on indie pop and rock. For over a decade, the beloved UK group have gone on to unveil three studio albums, including their most recent full-length Dreamland. Alongside releases, the band are also currently nominated for a Grammy award in 2022 - and closer to home here in Australia, their iconic track Heat Waves took out the coveted #1 spot on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020, of course, but more recently the track also scored the crown as Spotify's most streamed track in 2021, and also took out the #1 spot on the 2021 Aria end of year singles chart. Not too shabby for a track released a year and a half ago.Glass Animals are an anomaly in the best possible way, conjuring otherworldly psychedelic pop and hypnotic electronica in their recordings, while also often reworking their tracks to be more dance friendly for their live sets - and Aussie fans are set to cop the group live in technicolour action later this year, with the group lined up to play their biggest headline shows to date, including Perth, Sydney and Melbourne in July, and they're also on deck for the sold out Splendour In The Grass extravaganza lined up for July as well. And along for the ride, of course, will be a long-awaited live celebration of the group's sublime 2020 album Dreamland. But before the band return to their adoring fans here in Australia later this year (and for the first 2022 episode of The Green Room): today frontman Dave Bayley joins host Tiana Speter to discuss live shows, personal songwriting, what kept him going through the pandemic and new music confirmation and much more - including the fact that host Speter scarily and somewhat poetically had some glass shatter in front of her thanks to a storm the moment the interview Zoom call started.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:Glass Animals being "honorary Australians" and finally returning down under to tour their album DreamlandThe history of Glass Animals playing in Australia, and a particularly memorable Falls Festival moment for Dave featuring an Aussie fan and a belt made out of goon bagsWhy Dave loves playing at festivals, and Dave accidentally reveals his go-to festival disguise to get out and about in the crowdWhat we can expect from a Glass Animals show in 2022, and what it was really like to play their first live show post-lockdown in the UK (hint: there were nerves and possibly tears)The contributing factors that led to their 2020 album Dreamland being more personal than previous Glass Animals material, and how the band felt when the album was finally releasedThe incredible success for Heat Waves, both globally and here in Australia, and the contribution the love down under had to Dave traversing the COVID-19 pandemicDave chats about his love of Australia, Aussie crowds compared to other countries and how his mum's new boyfriend may contribute to him being in Australia more oftenWhy Dave currently finds himself loving festival shows compared to more intimate venues (for now)Dave reminisces about the first ever official Glass Animals live show, warts and all, as well as how it helped them positively evolve and led to their early Australian performancesWhat bands and artists caught Dave's ears in 2021, including Aussie artist D. The first time I saw him I said to myself, I have to be with him, I just have to be with him. And the first time we actually kissed I looked up at him and said, oh I've missed you so much. It just popped right out. He said, what do you mean, we just recently met. I said, I don't know, I've just missed you! And it was such a palpable feeling. I have since learned through spirit that Ron and I have had at least 6 lifetimes together.  I know one of our soul contracts was to come back and be legit married in this lifetime and we're now on 30 years this September! Sarah - Meeting Katie when I was traveling from Melbourne to Tasmania, we kept running into each other and actually her boyfriend took a photo on the ferry of my friend and I as the trip began. There is such a strong soul connection and we've learned that we've had many lifetimes together. ****************Why do people call it a soul contract? Because it was made as a soul. When you're making the soul contract before you come into this lifetime, it carries enormous weight on a soul level. This is because you're making an agreement, a promise or a vow to uphold what you need to do for your greatest good, what you need to do to move your soul forward. You've made this soul contract and it's not just something you can cancel even once you know about it. ****************Affirmation: I now understand with complete clarity that people and situations present in my life to fulfill my soul contract. We had the pleasure of interviewing Eliza & The Delusionals from the House of Blues in San Diego! *This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic*  Eliza & The Delusionals have never been afraid to think big. “The goal has always been to play huge shows,” says singer-guitarist Eliza Klatt, who founded the Northern New South Wales/Gold Coast band in 2015. Over the past few years that dream has slowly become a reality as the group’s sweetly snarling, anthemic brand of indie rock has led to supports with artists such as Grinspoon, Nothing But Thieves, Dear Seattle and Killing Heidi, appearances at landmark festivals such as BIGSOUND, Falls Festival and Canadian Music Week, and major radio support both locally and internationally. After a slew of well-received early singles, the band’s climb was kickstarted in earnest by 2017 debut EP The Deeper End. A potent mix of buzz-saw guitars, ear-worm melodies and Klatt’s undeniable vocal hooks, singles such as “Salt” instantly caught the attention of national broadcaster triple j. “We’re just writing songs we want to hear ourselves,” says guitarist Kurt Skuse. “You hear us in our purest form in our writing.” Skuse and Klatt go back years, living down the street from each other as kids. They reconnected in the Gold Coast’s thriving band scene, with Skuse joining alongside guitarist Ashley Martin, a friend of Klatt’s at university, to solidify the line up. The extended periods on the road since have acted as a steep learning curve, while fusing the band into a tightly-wound live unit. "We learned how to put our live set and show together through the experience of watching bigger-scale bands do it” says Klatt. You can hear that experience in recent singles “Pull Apart Heart” and “Just Exist”, the first taste of the group’s forthcoming second EP. The latter in particular introduces a more mature subtlety to their sound, with Klatt ruminating on finding a balance between creativity and good mental health against a slowly building and insistent melody. The song has connected in a big way, particularly in the United States and Canada, with Alt Nation – the flagship alternative rock channel of SiriusXM – crowning it their ‘Critical Cut’ and adding “Just Exist” to high rotation. The listeners responded in kind, voting it Number 1 on the Weekly ALT18 countdown, where it remained in the Top 10 for more than a month. The flow on effect has been remarkable, with more than a dozen stations across America – including national network Music Choice and influential outlets in New York, California, Texas and Florida – adding “Just Exist”. The band’s Spotify listenership has jumped by nearly 100% overall and a whopping 400+% in America, while “Just Exist” has exceeded 600,000 streams. Recently crowned Amazon’s Music’s “Weekly One” and “Song of the Week” in the States, the band’s Shazams have also surged by more than 900%. Having signed with renowned US agency APA for North America, the doors are well and truly starting to open for Eliza & The Delusionals internationally. Australia's live entertainment sector has welcomed the federal Government's long-overdue rescue funds and its adoption of a roadmap for the rebirth of concerts. On Friday, Federal Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts Paul Fletcher unveiled a plan for re-opening live entertainment, and confirmation of $60 million in grants that should “flow immediately” under the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund. Drawn into Fletcher's “Roadmap” is a relaxation for venues and events, that would allowed to operate at up to 75% capacity in states that have had 14 days with no new locally acquired Coronavirus cases. Separately, the trade body welcomed the “adoption of a roadmap for live performance to return so we can reconnect audiences, performers and venues in a safe and sustainable way.” Speaking at the Sydney costume workshop for the award-winning musical Hamilton, due to open next March at the Lyric Theatre, Fletcher revealed than $60 million of the $75 million RISE Fund had been allocated. Grants of between $50,000 and almost $2 million were approved to 115 projects in support of arts and entertainment sector organisations that are trying to “restart, re-imagine or create new cultural and creative activities,” reads the 20th November update. The pie is split with 71 percent of funding going to small-to-medium sized organisations, and 21 percent to those in regional spots. Also, $34 million is earmarked for not-for-profits and $26 will be funneled to commercial operations and sole traders. Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival organisers Secret Sounds Group have received a grant of over $1.5 million to launch a new music festival in 2021. Details of the new event are yet to be revealed, with the Herald quoting the company's co-chief executive Jessica Ducrou only as saying they were grateful to receive support for the “exciting innovative project [they] look forward to launching in 2021.” Other organisations that have received financial assistance as part of the program include Bluesfest. Organisers of the Byron Bay festival were granted $1 million to assist in running the next iteration of their event across the Easter long weekend next year in a COVID-safe fashion. The news arrives after both Splendour in the Grass and Falls were cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Splendour is set to return in July 2021 for its 20th year, with Gorillaz, The Strokes and Tyler, the Creator locked in as headliners. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. The Victorian government has announced $13 million in funding for the recovery of the state's live music industry, as it looks to rebuild when coronavirus-related lockdowns are eased. Over 100 live venues in Victoria – including Northcote Social Club, The Grace Darling, Castlemaine's Theatre Royal, The Corner Hotel, The Night Heron and many more – will share in a total of $9 million worth of grants as part of the Victorian Live Music Venues program's first phase. Meanwhile, the four-year legal saga that proceeded the tragic stampede at Falls Festival's 2016 Lorne Leg has finally wrapped up, with the Victorian Supreme Court approving a multi-million dollar settlement for those injured. As the ABC reports, 77 victims of the crowd crush will share in a $7 million cash settlement, after launching a class action lawsuit against the festival in 2017. The stampede incident at Falls Festival 2016/2017 occurred on Friday, 30th December. Thanks for listening! Be sure to subscribe for more content. He's spoken out against Andrew Bolt receiving a platform at the 2016 Festival of Dangerous Ideas and garnered some media attention last month when he offered to give away his Falls Festival ticket to anyone who could prove they had convinced radio station triple j to change the date of their massive annual song countdown, the Hottest 100, from "Australia Day" on January 26th. Here Brendan (eloquently) explains his thinking and the ideas behind the #changethedate movement, reacts to the subsequent response from triple j and the public and discusses the murky distinctions between the expression of "challenging views" and hate speech, holding our public institutions to account and how we balance the importance of calling out racism with the goal of actually changing people's minds.  Boundless Plains To Share at the Belvoir Theatre, January 2017 Comedy 4 Karma in Daylesford, Saturday October 15th Brendan's letter in Independent Australia: An Open Letter to Creators of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas  Footage of Andrew Bolt's session at the Festival of Dangerous Ideas Article: triple j Hottest 100 Man Starts Competition to Change The Date Article: Briggs Reckons triple j Should Change The Hottest 100 Date  triple j statement: triple j's Hottest 100 is staying on January 26...for now.
