There is not one human being who feels happy when they see another human being living on the street– it's safe to say that we all agree homelessness is something everyone cares about and no one is for. If you've ever been moved with compassion for families with children experiencing homelessness and wondered what can be done, then this inspiring episode is for you! Join us as we speak with positive and innovative Christine Mirasy-Glasco from Upward Bound House. She shares the successes they've seen at UBH as they address this issue in Los Angeles and remind us of our common humanity. UBH provides housing, training, and support, helping families get back on their feet and become self-sufficient. Going beyond physical needs, they address psychological issues such as PTSD from being on the street and the like with love and care. These efforts result in families feeling more stable and hopeful for their futures, many times breaking the cycle of what brought them to homelessness in the first place. Ally Piddock also joins us to highlight Home Run For Kids, their hugely successful, collaborative fundraiser that brings together the entire community. 

Since 1995 Paul has been writing and teaching Do-It-Yourself investors about the Ultimate Buy and Hold Portfolio. In this 2022 update he uses the UBH table (70-30) and UBH tables (50-50) to make the case for 10 equity asset classes he thinks investors should consider owning in the equity portion of their long-term investments. The key takeaways: The S&P 500 can easily be “beat” without taking more risk. The impact of adding just 10% of another equity asset class can improve long-term returns. The impact of even .1% more return can be life changing over long periods of time. Adding more risky asset classes can substantially reduce risk. Diversification of equity asset classes is as important as diversification of individual stocks. Rebalancing is not about higher returns but is about limiting risk. Adding international equities can have a meaningful impact on long-term returns whether you add 30% or 50% to the portfolio. There is not risk in the past, we always know what we should have done. The UBH Portfolio is not designed to get the best return, but is designed to get a better return than the S&P 500 without substantially more risk.

In May, Paul Merriman, founder of The Merriman Financial Education Foundation, and Chris Pedersen, director of research, were guest presenters at two ChooseFI online events, via Facebook Live on May 9 and Zoom on May 16. On May 9 Chris and Paul made separate presentations: Paul on “12 Investment Decisions Guaranteed to Change Your Financial Future" and Chris on “2 Funds for Life.” They were joined by Chief Analyst Daryl Bahls to answer questions. I am intrigued by your 4-fund portfolio However, my respectful criticism of that portfolio is that it does not have any international exposure. There is a contributor on the Boglehead's forum who has supposedly done a series of backtesting and shown that the following combo has an identical long term returns as the UBH portfolio. The holdings: US LGB + US SCV + Intl LGV + Intl SCB. What are your thoughts on this portfolio? 59:26

Upward Bound House nonprofit helps homeless families with children in #LosAngelesCounty get off the streets and into housing with supportive services, everything from job training, mental health services, placement, and helping to acclimate kids back in school. Today we speak with Kristina Ortega, a woman with four children now thriving after working with #UBH for nearly a year. We also talk with philanthropist #LauraAnderson (#LisaElson is under the weather), and she’ll explain how Upward Bound does this, and also tell us about a race this Sunday along San Vicente Blvd. to raise money for this amazing organization.
