EMDR in Practice: The Functional Model – When Do You Become a Qualified Counsellor? In Episode 367 of the Counselling Tutor Podcast, your hosts Rory Lees-Oakes and Ken Kelly explore three timely and important topics for counsellors, psychotherapists, and students. Firstly, in Ethical, Sustainable Practice, Rory and Ken explore talking to clients about AI in therapy, discussing the growing presence of artificial intelligence (AI) in clients' lives and why therapists need to address the risks, ethics, and boundaries of AI use within the therapeutic contract. Then, in Practice Matters, Rory is joined by Andrew Kidd for the second part of their conversation on EMDR, focusing on the functional model and how EMDR works in practice to help clients reprocess trauma. Finally, in Student Services, Rory and Ken unpack a common source of confusion for trainees: when you actually become “qualified” as a counsellor, and how this differs from accreditation and employability. Talking to Clients About AI in Therapy [starts at 03:08 mins] Rory and Ken explore talking to clients about AI in therapy, examining why counsellors need to understand and address clients' use of AI and how to ethically integrate this into therapeutic practice. Key points discussed include: Many clients are already using AI tools (such as large language models) for emotional support and guidance, often without understanding the risks. AI does not hold duty of care, ethical accountability, or safeguarding responsibilities, unlike a trained therapist. Responses from AI can sound confident and empathic but may be inaccurate, inappropriate, or harmful. Client data shared with AI tools may be stored, analysed, and used commercially, with no guarantee of confidentiality. Including AI use within the therapy contract helps protect clients and supports ethical, defensible practice. EMDR in Practice: The Functional Model [starts at 41:03 mins] In this second interview, Andrew Kidd explains how EMDR works in the therapy room and how it helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories. Key points from this conversation include: Trauma is understood not as what happened, but as what happens inside the nervous system as a result of events. EMDR works by activating the brain's natural healing mechanisms through bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones). Bilateral stimulation helps clients stay grounded in the present while safely processing past memories. Clients do not need to recount traumatic events in full detail for EMDR to be effective. After reprocessing, memories often feel more distant and less emotionally charged, allowing clients to live more freely in the present. When Do You Become a Qualified Counsellor? [starts at 01:02:11 mins] Rory and Ken clarify the difference between being qualified, accredited, and employable within the counselling profession. Key points include: Completing a recognised counselling diploma (with supervised practice) means you are technically a qualified counsellor. The best leaders are the ones that can hold space for both—care personally and challenge directly. Work never happens in a vacuum. Field calls, customer pressure, travel, and deadlines compound the very real mental load carried by water professionals. In this conversation, Dr. Andy Melton, a professional counselor and executive coach at  www.andymelton.com—shares clear, practical ways leaders and teams can recognize mental health warning signs, set the right boundaries, and respond with care without stepping outside their role.  Care Personally, Challenge Directly—Inside Clear Boundaries Managers aren't neutral parties, and that matters. Andy explains the built-in conflict of interest when a supervisor probes too deeply into an employee's personal struggles. You still need to check in—but do it in role: use open-ended, performance-anchored questions (“What's been challenging for you lately?”), document observations, and offer resources instead of diagnoses. He also highlights Kim Scott's “Radical Candor” frame—care personally and challenge directly—as a durable leadership posture for tough conversations.   Spotting Decline Early—Behavioral, Cognitive, Physical  Before missed KPIs and callbacks spike, there are tells: sudden drops in productivity, withdrawal, irritability, rising absence/tardiness, markedly negative self-talk, and physical complaints (fatigue, headaches, stomach issues). Andy shares a simple “dashboard” self-check—sleep and eating patterns—plus trackable 1–10 scales for stress, energy, engagement, and mood stability to catch trends early.  When It's Serious—Safe Paths and Resources  Anonymous surveys can surface urgent risks—including suicidality. Andy outlines responsible next steps: widen communication, invite follow-ups, and immediately involve a mental health professional or crisis resources. Know the number 988 and your local mobile crisis team information; publish those options prominently so help is never far away.  Grounding Under Load—3 Techniques You Can Use Anywhere  For anxiety (mind racing ahead) and depression (mind stuck in the past), uniting mind and body in the present increases bandwidth. Andy teaches three job-friendly tools: the four-second “box” breath, a five-senses “sensory scan,” and a head-to-toe “progressive muscle relaxation.” Each can be done discreetly at a desk, in a service truck, or before a customer meeting.  Strong operations require strong people. Build a culture that normalizes check-ins, provides resources, and keeps performance expectations clear. Learn about facial injury red flags, CSF identification, EAP essentials, and return-to-play guidelines for athletes from Dr. Rehal Bhojani. Q: What are the red flags for hematomas? A: Protocols from SCAT6 and other guidelines for hematomas or hemorrhages emphasize watching for loss of consciousness (LOC), altered mental status, and vomiting. Quickly identify these signs to avoid missing late concussions or other critical issues. Ensure the mechanism of injury (MOI) aligns with the trauma; diagnosis is challenging if it doesn't. Q: How can CSF be identified, and what is the "halo sign" red flag? A: The halo sign, also known as the ring sign, remains the best indicator for identifying cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is distinct: it has a clear-to-mucous color, is super thin, lighter than water, and does not mix with other fluids. For instance, a soccer player initially diagnosed with a concussion showed a bloody nose and consistent halo sign post-game, necessitating immediate emergency room referral. Q: What essential elements should be added to an Emergency Action Plan (EAP)? A: EAPs are becoming more comprehensive, focusing on three key areas. First, ensure resource accessibility by including contacts for ENTs, dentists, and eye doctors. Second, review the EAP regularly, two to three times a year, rather than just annually, using past injury knowledge to proactively improve it. Third, if using AI to draft EAPs, meticulously verify all listed resources. Q: What items should be included in kits for eye and tooth injuries? A: For eye and tooth injuries, kits should include 4x4 gauzes, an otoscope, a "Save a Tooth" system, eyedrops, nasal tampons, and Afrin. Physician-approved medications should also be added, along with an ENT kit, which is available online. Q: What are the risks and benefits of athletic trainers performing sutures on the field? A: On-field suturing depends on the location and type of laceration, with the cause (e.g., metal object) being crucial due to potential tetanus considerations. Athletes often return to play the same day with sutures. For facial lacerations, specific types and sizes of sutures are used, but caution is advised near the eye. Eyebrows and the skull are generally suitable for suturing if no underlying fracture exists. Control bleeding and inform athletes of the risks associated with playing with sutures; safety is paramount. Q: When can athletes return to play after tooth injuries? A: For primary (baby) teeth, if no secondary tooth injury is suspected, return to play (RTP) is generally straightforward. However, secondary tooth injuries involving complex factors can lead to lasting effects. It is important to document whether the injury involves primary versus permanent teeth. For younger children, involve parents to understand the mechanism of injury and the potential for future crown and root fractures. Q: What current sports medicine trends should recent graduates be aware of or learn in the classroom? A: Sports medicine is constantly evolving, with increased pressure for accurate decision-making. Recent graduates need to be proficient in current literature and comfortable with shared decision-making and escalating care. As athletic trainers often serve as primary sports medicine providers, they require broad skills across various domains. Q: How can these emerging sports medicine competencies be effectively taught? A: Teaching these competencies is challenging due to the need for comprehensive exposure. Educational methods vary by setting, and the field has expanded significantly. Training provides a broad scope, so it's important not to be narrow-minded. Past experiences remain relevant, and post-training, continuous reading and skill refinement are crucial. In a controlled educational environment, students should learn as much as possible, as quickly as possible, to prepare for real-world practice.

Walking by Faith, Training With PurposeFrom Cedarville to the Indianapolis Colts and now the University of Kansas Jayhawks, Kyler Conn's journey is one stitched together by purpose, perseverance, and a deep-rooted faith.A recent graduate of Cedarville University's rigorous BA in sports medicine and Master of Athletic Training five-year program, Kyler's path has never been just about tape and treatment tables. It's been about serving others through athletic training while staying grounded in his walk with Christ. He recently shared his story on the Cedarville Stories podcast, reflecting on the power of mentorship, faith, and family in his life.Kyler's hands-on experience began with high-level internships at Baylor University, where he worked with both the football and men's basketball programs. From assisting in sideline emergencies to supporting long-term rehab for elite athletes, Kyler's experiences gave him a close-up view of what it takes to perform under pressure at the highest level. Then came the NFL — an internship with the Indianapolis Colts where Kyler worked alongside seasoned professionals in one of the most competitive sports environments.It was during his time in Indy that he connected with a strength coach who recognized Cedarville's name and faith foundation. He eventually invited Kyler to College Park Church, which became a spiritual home during that season.While sharpening his skills on the field, Kyler also invested in the classroom. His academic research centered on Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) — the critical blueprints sports medicine teams follow during catastrophic injuries or athlete collapse. He examined how preparedness, communication, and clearly defined roles can save lives in high-pressure moments. For Kyler, EAPs aren't just paperwork — they're lifelines, and he's passionate about equipping teams to respond with precision when seconds matter most.He's also a strong advocate for mentorship, crediting much of his development to those who invested in him. “I wouldn't be where I am without the guidance of those ahead of me,” he shared.Now, Kyler is preparing to join the University of Kansas as the athletic trainer for men's basketball and baseball. What if the research indicated there was an inexpensive breathing exercise device that, if utilized about 5 minutes/day, could significantly reduce blood pressure and improve exercise performance? Resisted breathing – or what the science refers to as “inspiratory muscle strength training” – or IMST - isn't new. I remember reading about it, but at the time it appeared to be all fluff as our intercostal breathing muscles were almost never utilized at capacity, so who cares if we strengthen them? Fast forward a decade or so and it turns out we might all care. Whether you or a loved one has high blood pressure and would like to access options beyond just medications, or you're a runner, triathlete, swimmer or cyclist looking to optimize your performance – IMST may be worth a closer look. Today we'll take that closer look with Dr. Daniel Craighead, who's groundbreaking work in this area is both fascinating and eye-opening. Dr. Craighead is a leading exercise physiologist and cardiovascular health researcher at the University of Minnesota, where he focuses on innovative, time-efficient interventions to combat age-related declines in cardiovascular and metabolic health. His research on high-resistance inspiratory muscle strength training has shown that just five minutes a day of targeted breathing exercise can significantly lower blood pressure, enhance vascular function, and improve exercise tolerance — all without traditional aerobic training. In 2003, I was in New Zealand to compete in the Triathlon world championships. It was an amazing time. I met some amazing athletes from around the world, most notably Champion Barb Lindquist and Sheila Taormina, who went on to become the first person to qualify for the Olympics in THREE different sports. But the most interesting person I met? Today's guest, Tricia Downing.Among a sea of mental toughness, resilience and grit, none exceeded Trish. She'd become a triathlete after a serious bike wreck left her paralyzed from the waist down. While the rest of us swam, cycled and ran the course, Trish did it with just her upper body. Incredible.
