A: Protocols from SCAT6 and other guidelines for hematomas or hemorrhages emphasize watching for loss of consciousness (LOC), altered mental status, and vomiting. Quickly identify these signs to avoid missing late concussions or other critical issues. Ensure the mechanism of injury (MOI) aligns with the trauma; diagnosis is challenging if it doesn't. Q: How can CSF be identified, and what is the "halo sign" red flag? A: The halo sign, also known as the ring sign, remains the best indicator for identifying cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is distinct: it has a clear-to-mucous color, is super thin, lighter than water, and does not mix with other fluids. For instance, a soccer player initially diagnosed with a concussion showed a bloody nose and consistent halo sign post-game, necessitating immediate emergency room referral. Q: What essential elements should be added to an Emergency Action Plan (EAP)? A: EAPs are becoming more comprehensive, focusing on three key areas. First, ensure resource accessibility by including contacts for ENTs, dentists, and eye doctors. Second, review the EAP regularly, two to three times a year, rather than just annually, using past injury knowledge to proactively improve it. Third, if using AI to draft EAPs, meticulously verify all listed resources. Q: What items should be included in kits for eye and tooth injuries? A: For eye and tooth injuries, kits should include 4x4 gauzes, an otoscope, a "Save a Tooth" system, eyedrops, nasal tampons, and Afrin. Physician-approved medications should also be added, along with an ENT kit, which is available online. Q: What are the risks and benefits of athletic trainers performing sutures on the field? A: On-field suturing depends on the location and type of laceration, with the cause (e.g., metal object) being crucial due to potential tetanus considerations. Athletes often return to play the same day with sutures. For facial lacerations, specific types and sizes of sutures are used, but caution is advised near the eye. Eyebrows and the skull are generally suitable for suturing if no underlying fracture exists. Control bleeding and inform athletes of the risks associated with playing with sutures; safety is paramount. Q: When can athletes return to play after tooth injuries? A: For primary (baby) teeth, if no secondary tooth injury is suspected, return to play (RTP) is generally straightforward. However, secondary tooth injuries involving complex factors can lead to lasting effects. It is important to document whether the injury involves primary versus permanent teeth. For younger children, involve parents to understand the mechanism of injury and the potential for future crown and root fractures. Q: What current sports medicine trends should recent graduates be aware of or learn in the classroom? A: Sports medicine is constantly evolving, with increased pressure for accurate decision-making. Recent graduates need to be proficient in current literature and comfortable with shared decision-making and escalating care. Walking by Faith, Training With PurposeFrom Cedarville to the Indianapolis Colts and now the University of Kansas Jayhawks, Kyler Conn's journey is one stitched together by purpose, perseverance, and a deep-rooted faith.A recent graduate of Cedarville University's rigorous BA in sports medicine and Master of Athletic Training five-year program, Kyler's path has never been just about tape and treatment tables. It's been about serving others through athletic training while staying grounded in his walk with Christ. He recently shared his story on the Cedarville Stories podcast, reflecting on the power of mentorship, faith, and family in his life.Kyler's hands-on experience began with high-level internships at Baylor University, where he worked with both the football and men's basketball programs. What if the research indicated there was an inexpensive breathing exercise device that, if utilized about 5 minutes/day, could significantly reduce blood pressure and improve exercise performance? Managed Access Programs (or MAPs) enable mechanisms for patients with unmet medical needs to get access to new medications outside of the clinical trial setting and well before marketing authorisation and reimbursement in a patient's country. Also referred to as Expanded Access Programs and Early Access Programs, these programs are not limited to the US. Capital Area Michigan Works!' Business Resource Network (or BRN as we typically call it) is a novel retention strategy that focuses on preventing employees from quitting or getting fired. The long-term goal is to improve employee retention for BRN member employers, which will boost productivity along with growth opportunities within their organization. Targeted services to employer members working with a BRN Success Coach aim to successfully remove barriers to employees that may affect retention while providing pathways for those facing obstacles to employment success. Question: How does the Business Resource Network assist employees? Employees meet with a BRN Success Coach and identify areas of improvement. The coach works with each employee individually working to connect them with area resources or provide soft skills training until they meet their goals. Coaches then follow up with employees until their employment is stabilized and they successfully complete the program. What can the Business Resource Network help with? Commonly, employees seek help for housing and transportation. However, the Business Resource Network can also support employees struggling with childcare, legal problems, and personal issues. We often tell employees that if they have a problem, we have a solution. Question: How is the Business Resource Network different from a company's Employee Assistance Program? Most EAPs provide confidential assessments and short-term counseling. EAPs are typically more clinical. Our Business Resource Network pairs easily with existing EAPs and often increases employees' usage of their EAP. BRN provides a Capital Area Michigan Works! Success Coach to the member company's workers. That Success Coach works closely with struggling workers, identifies areas of improvement, and supports the employee to make necessary changes to reach their goals. This may take the form of connection to community resources, direct financial assistance or soft skill training. The Business Resource Network also features direct referral through managers or human resource employees. Question: Why should an employer join BRN? In 2024, our employer BRN members averaged 778% return on their investment. Retention and productivity increase, and recruiting and training costs decrease. The Business Resource Network at Capital Area Michigan Works! understands employment needs and trends in the tri-county region. The BRN team works daily with member employers to address these needs and provide resources to develop solutions geared toward employee retention. When a company joins BRN, they have access to an on-site and/or virtual Success Coach who is dedicated to work directly with that company's employees to develop individual plans to get the services they need to not only stay but grow within that same organization. In 2003, I was in New Zealand to compete in the Triathlon world championships. It was an amazing time. I met some amazing athletes from around the world, most notably Champion Barb Lindquist and Sheila Taormina, who went on to become the first person to qualify for the Olympics in THREE different sports. Early access programmes (EAPs) for novel medicines are an often-misunderstood strategy outside of western markets. In a new pharmaphorum podcast, web editor Nicole Raleigh speaks with Cem Zorlular, CEO of Er-Kim Pharmaceuticals, a company that has been serving as a regional affiliate for pharma and biotech since 1981 in the CEE and Mediterranean. Market access strategies in many international markets do not function the same way as they do in the US or Western Europe and require a different approach. Zorlular explains how EAPs can drive revenue for pharmaceutical companies from international unlicensed markets, but that most importantly EAPs allow patients access to life-altering novel medicines. What's more, he says, EAPs can also help shape the biotech space by supporting the opportunity for RWD collection outside of the clinical trial setting and build momentum with local payers, regulators, and the medical community. Exploration. The search for the unknown has shaped the history of our species, molding our behavior in ways we are only beginning to understand. And that understanding is about to come into focus for us today, thanks to today's guest, best-selling author and one of my favorite writers, Dr. Alex Hutchinson.
