— Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. The unique confluence of Jim Wilson's two careers - piano technician/confidant to the stars and a globally successful recording artist - has led to extraordinary experiences with some of the world's most exalted music legends: singing Beatle songs with Paul McCartney, limo rides with Elton John, road trips with Carole King, and horseback riding with Dan Fogelberg. But beyond this everyman's unique telling of intimate celebrity tales, Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. Emerging from a troubled childhood in a broken West Texas home, a young man moves to Los Angeles to pursue fame and fortune as a singer-songwriter. He soon strays from his mission when his piano tuning sideline blossoms into a career as piano technician to the entertainment industry's biggest names. His help in the development of the world's first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano leads to him sharing adventures, sessions, meals, and laughs with dozens of his childhood heroes. His front row seat provides him with a rare and fascinating view into their creative processes. But when his world is shattered by his dearest friend's sudden and untimely death, he is forced to question the true meaning of success. He returns to his heart's purpose, takes a leap into the unknown, and sets out on a solo career, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Valeria interviews Jim Wilson — He is an Acclaimed Composer and Performer — the author of TUNED IN: Memoirs Of A Piano Man: Behind The Scenes With Music Legends And Finding The Artist Within. Jim Wilson could have simply dismissed himself as a competent piano tuner-technician, even an exceptional one. But he was, and is, so much more. From a broken home in Amarillo, Texas to a multi-award-winning recording artist, Jim Wilson's journey is a captivating tale of showbiz glamour, personal tragedy, self-discovery, and dogged determination. And, as is typical of Jim Wilson, he's turned out to be a pretty good wordsmith. Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man is a page-turner and a life-changer. It's a self-help book in the form of an autobiography. It is entertaining, revealing and full of lessons for musicians, fans, and all readers. Jim Wilson's life direction was set when he was given a guitar at age 7, then began composing songs at age 9. Soon after moving from West Texas to LA in his early 20's, he gained a reputation as a respected piano technician, catering to the highest echelon of the music industry. Jim helped develop the first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano in the 80's, which became an instant hit with artists and studios around the world. It was the shocking, untimely death of his closest friend that forced Jim to question the whole purpose of his life. With the love and support of his musical heroes — most significantly his friend and mentor, Dan Fogelberg — Jim set out on a solo career, composing, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Four of Jim's ten recordings have hit the Billboard Top-20, he's had two PBS specials, and his music has been streamed over 75 million times by fans around the globe. He was recently made a “Lifetime Member” of the Recording Academy. He enjoys scuba diving, skiing, pilot lessons, and mountain biking. Tuned In is Jim's first book. Episode Notes S6E10 - Join us as we sit down with the one and only Laura Pursell. She'll be telling us tales from acting to singing her hits and much much more. Her nostalgic, lush and heartfelt voice, Laura Pursell's smooth west coast vocals are backed by the genius of her famous father Bill Pursell, who wrote 8 out of 10 arrangements and played piano on all 10 tracks. The rich orchestration, recorded by Nashville's A-team players. Mr. Pursell is perhaps best known for his hit record "Our Winter Love," but also played piano on many of Johnny Cash's albums in the 1960s, and worked as a session musician and arranger for Patsy Cline, Johnny Paycheck, Hoover, Joan Baez, Eric Andersen, Scotty Moore, J.J. Cale, Willie Nelson, Dan Fogelberg, and others. In 1985, Pursell was named Composer of the Year by the Tennessee Music Teachers Association. At 18, she was cast as Dick Van Patton's niece in a nationally televised Christmas special, “The Gift of Song”, starring a host of country music stars. Relocating to LA in the early 90's, she studied at the South Coast Repertory and Beverly Hills Playhouse and has starred in countless stage productions all over LA, including "Blue Moon Dancing" by Ed Graczyk, "In the City for the Summer" (Variety singled out her gritty performance), and the farcical, outrageous "And Then There was Nun" which played to sold out houses for 2 extensions, where she did a hilarious sendup of Gloria Swanson. She was a long time member of the Company of Angels, LA's oldest repertory theatre, winning a Dramalogue Award for her saucy, sword-wielding performance in the mainstage production of “Zastrozzi”. She appeared in an iconic video for Weird Al Yankovic, spoofing Tanya Harding in the "Mmmm Mmmm" song (where she did her own figure skating). She appeared in several episodes of "Days of Our Lives" and had a small but pivotal role in "The Landlady" starring Talia Shire. In 2013, she was cast as one of the three leads in a hilarious coming-of-middle-age web series called "Living the Dream", and in 2015, she had the starring role in "Only the Moon Howls", a moving one act which won the Encore! Award at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Her performance was singled out for its "deep emotional access" and hailed as "heartbreaking", "truthful", "sensitive" and "vulnerable". A film version of the piece is planned for late 2015. In 2001, she landed a plum role, singing for Betty and President Gerald Ford in Palm Springs. Over the years, she has recorded and performed with some of the greatest jazz musicians on the west coast. She has performed in St. Petersburg, Russia, Dublin Ireland and in west coast venues such as Spazio, Vitello's, The Money Tree, Barone's, Monteleone's, The San Ysidro Ranch (Santa Barbara), Vicky's of Santa Fe (Palm Springs) and the Canyon Club. She appeared with Gary Tole's "Legends of Swing" orchestra and the Doug MacDonald's 13-piece "Jazz Coalition". She currently performs every Thursday at Mixology 101 in the Grove at the LA Farmer's Market with a stellar jazz trio. Send us a textEpisode 013 Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Tom Scott joins the Aerophone Academy to share his extraordinary musical journey from clarinet player to pioneering wind controller artist. With 13 Grammy nominations, 3 Grammy awards, and appearances on over 2,000 recordings, Scott's unmistakable sound has defined popular music across multiple decades.Scott takes us through his remarkable career path, beginning with his early musical influences from his father, a music director at NBC Radio during World War II. His professional journey started at just 14 years old, playing $15 gigs at country clubs – experiences that taught him valuable lessons about serving the music rather than his ego. "Don't try to insert your own personal opinion about how you feel about a certain tune. Just play the damn thing with as much feeling as you can muster."The conversation explores Scott's groundbreaking work with the Lyricon, the world's first commercially available wind synthesizer. We hear fascinating behind-the-scenes stories about his iconic wind controller solos on hits like Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean," Captain & Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time," Dan Fogelberg's "Heart Hotels," and Steely Dan's "Peg." These recordings revolutionized how electronic instruments could be integrated into popular music, bringing unprecedented expressiveness to synthesized sounds.Scott's masterful horn arrangements for Steely Dan's "Aja" album receive special attention, revealing his sophisticated approach to orchestration. "I'm going to write this like it's an Oliver Nelson arrangement," he explains, describing how he transformed simple chord structures into rich, complex voicings that enhanced these iconic recordings.Whether discussing his evolution through different wind controller technologies or sharing wisdom about musical restraint ("less is more very often"), Scott's insights offer invaluable perspectives for musicians at every level. This conversation celebrates not just technological innovation but the enduring importance of musicality in an increasingly electronic landscape.Subscribe now and join us next episode for part two of our conversation with this legendary musical innovator! If you'd like to send us a question for an upcoming episode, please email us at info@aerophoneacademy.comOr leave us a voice message that we can include in the podcast here. For more information about Matt, visit www.patchmanmusic.comFor great Aerophone courses, visit www.isax.academy
Maybe the name Jerry Hey doesn't ring any bells for you. But, you've been listening to songs that Jerry has played his trumpet on or has arranged for probably your entire life. He became one of Quincy Jones' main studio guys. He arranged strings on "Billie Jean," played on Brothers Johnson and Earth Wind & Fire and George Benson albums, that's him on Dolly's "9 to 5," and he's been on a ton of TV and movie soundtracks (yep, that's him on the CHiPs theme song). And, since I'm reengineering the "Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon" to "Seven Degrees of Dan Fogelberg"....that's Jerry on the flugelhorn for the "Longer" solo. Guess how many takes it took to nail that solo?Check out other episodes at RecordsRevisitedPodcast.com or one all your favorite podcast providers like Apple Podcasts, Castbox, iHeartMedia, and Spotify. What do Eudora Welty and Dan Fogelberg have in common? They both got their start at WZZQ in Jackson, MS, of course. Well, sort of. Watch WZZQ The Movie on PBS, just like The Guys did, and get all the deets, man. Though none of The Guys lived in the broadcast range of WZZQ, they still found their own personal connections to this iconic album rock radio station, a first of its kind in the state and beyond. Nightmare and Sleepy, on the other hand - this week's set of regrettable superheroes, may have been the last of their kind. Jay brings the celebrity obits in this episode, with the recent loss of Dabney Coleman and Susan Backlinie (you know her- you just don't know you know her.) Art has more news of potential Trekkie prequels and Robbie has a Vision for a sequel. Sit back and listen to this one on your FM stereo converter. Watch WZZQ - The Movie here at PBS.org.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Jim Wilson, Award Winning Composer, Pianist & Recording Artist, Author, “Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man” About Harvey's guest:Today's special guest, Jim Wilson, is a multi-award winning composer, pianist, concert and recording artist who has just released a fascinating, entertaining and insightful memoir entitled, “Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man: Behind the Scenes with Music Legends and Finding the Artist Within”. As a young man, he moved from his home in Texas to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a songwriter, musician and performer. But his ambitions took a major detour when his sideline job as a piano tuner blossomed into a hugely successful career as a piano technician for some of the greatest music artists of our generation, including Burt Bacharach, Elton John, Phil Collins, Quincy Jones, Bruce Springsteen, Carole King, Paul McCartney, Lionel Richie, David Foster, Dan Fogelberg – and believe me, I'm just scratching the surface. Our guest got to know many of his legendary clients very well, and through his book, we get an up-close-and-personal glimpse into their lives off-stage. Following the sudden death of a dear friend, and with the encouragement of music superstar Dan Fogelberg, our guest made the life-altering decision to confront his insecurities and anxieties, emerge from the sidelines and follow his dreams and step into the limelight as a music artist in his own right. And what a career he's had. He played keyboards, served as music director, and was frequently the opening act on tour for Stephen Bishop for 16 years. He's recorded 10 piano-featured instrumental albums, 4 of which have hit the Billboard Top 20: “Northern Seascapes”, “Cape of Good Hope”, “Remembrance” and his beautiful tribute album to the late Dan Fogelberg, entitled, “Leader of the Band”. Some of my other favourite albums are “My First Christmas With You”, “Playing Favourites”, and “My Mother's Son”. Our guest has had 2 PBS specials: “Cape of Good Hope and Other Musical Portraits”, and “Jim Wilson: A Place in my Heart”. And his music has been streamed close to 80 million times by fans around the world. He was elected to the Board of Governors of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and he was recently made a “Lifetime Member” of the Recording Academy. Darren Newberg, guitarist and vocalist of the band Coyote Circle, started playing with a co-worker, Paul Hanson, the bassist, a few years ago, hoping to start a new group. Nahani Freeman, vocalist, joined this new group from a different band they had formed. After that, Dave Sechler, guitarist and vocalist, joined as well. To round out the group, Khristine Barr, drummer, as well as a former Gilpin School student, joined most recently and helped get this new group their first serious gigs.Sechler was raised in a musical family, as his father played guitar and his grandmother sang in a church choir with her sisters, so he was raised with a lot of music. In particular, he was raised with 70s music like Neil Young, Dan Fogelberg, and John Denver. He picked up the guitar for the first time at around age 14, sticking with it over the years and playing with a wide variety of people. Jim Wilson about his memoir Tuned In: Memoirs of a Piano Man: Behind the Scenes with Music Legends and Finding the Artist Within. “In Tuned In, I write about some of my favorite memories of singing Beatles songs with Paul McCartney, limo rides with Elton John, road trips with Carole King, and horseback riding with Dan Fogelberg,” Wilson says. Praise for Tuned In: “Tuned In is much more than I expected. With humor and insight, Jim shares his adventures and experiences with some of the world's greatest music icons. His story is inspiring and relatable. Highly recommended.” Ray Romano, Emmy-winning actor “I adore this memoir so. A truly fascinating tale by a fascinating man.” Martin Short, actor, comedian, singer, writer Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives.

His first project was John Lennon and Yoko's “War Is Over (if you want it)” Christmas card, which led to the worldwide WAR IS OVER billboard campaign that continues to this day. He designed The Beatles' Let It Be book and album package and the Abbey Road album cover, as well as John & Yoko's Wedding Album boxed set.
