Chapter 29 of Star Wars: Dark Force Rising (1992) (EU: 9 ABY) by Timothy Zahn. Full Show NotesShare the online player for this episode## The Story So Far ##Grand Admiral Thrawn has been plotting the downfall of the Rebellion. Since his return from the Unknown Region, he has discovered the Emperor's Wayland Storehouse of technological prototypes. Taking ysalamiri from Myrkr, they discovered clone Jedi Joruus C'baoth and made an alliance; C'baoth's battle meditation to augment the Imperial warfront, in exchange for the capture of Force-sensitives Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa Solo. Thrawn claimed the technology held within Mount Tantiss and established a new Imperial military outpost.Warships are in short supply between the two factions, and with the re-emergence of the Katana Fleet, both superpowers race to find it. The New Republic joins forces with Karrde's Smugglers and Garm Bel Iblis's Rogue Rebel Faction in the final hours of the race. They arrive too late to claim the entire Katana Fleet, but manage to repel the Imperials from possessing the last fifteen ships (including the Flagship, the Katana itself) by ramming one of the dreadnaughts into Imperial Star Destroyer Peremptory. Thrawn and C'baoth's alliance has been an unsteady one, and at that critical point C'baoth used his unnerving Force-powers to coerce an audience to renegotiate their agreement, having forced Thrawn to send the now-destroyed Peremptory in his stead.## Chapter 29 ##Luke uses the Force to achieve the impossible task of locating Mara among the debris of the space battle. She is barely alive and rushed to a medical frigate by Karrde's people. Luke wonders why she was so important to save. Although already on his way back to the Katana, Han radios to hasten his return. They look down at the dead Imperial soldiers of the boarding party, suddenly understanding how the Empire plans to crew their new dreadnaught fleet.Elsewhere aboard the Chimaera, Thrawn and C'baoth bristle over their current alliance. To place himself in a position that he cannot be overlooked or discarded, C'baoth declares himself overseer of the Mount Tantiss Project: the Imperial Spaarti cloning operation.## Join Us ##Discuss with us on Discord or YouTubeSupport us on PatreonOur WebsiteSupport the show

Welcome to the 2nd installment of the Unknown Regions Podcast's Late & Lazy Reader's High Republic Book Club in which we discuss the darker & intriguing THR novel, "THE RISING STORM" by Cavan Scott! The High Republic slaps, & we are blessed, once again, with guidance from our lovely friend, SARAH (Friends of the Force Podcast, @seh221), to help us process all the goings-on in this darker middle chapter of Phase 1 of The High Republic novels.
Grand Admiral Thrawn was inspired by key historical and fictional figures, like Sherlock Holmes and Alexander the Great. In Timothy Zahn's original trilogy of Thrawn books, which launched the now defunct Expanded Universe, beginning with Heir to the Empire, the Chiss military genius, was charged with the onerous task of keeping the Empire together after the death of the Emperor and the destruction of the Second Death Star. The only non-human to ever be given the rank of Grand Admiral, he hailed from the Chiss Ascendancy in the Unknown Region. Unlike Darth Vader, Thrawn didn't use brutality and fear to keep his crew in line, instead the Grand Admiral inspired his underlings with his leadership and vision, and only rarely resorted to violence to maintain discipline. He proved quite the impediment for our heroes, outwitting them at effectively every turn and almost succeeding in restoring the Empire, but was defeated at the very last moment by Rogue squad. Prior to this most recent season of The Mandalorian, we as an audience assumed that the remnants of the Empire fled into the Unknown Regions of the galaxy and became the First Order. While that is true from a certain point of view, this series has revealed that there is a loosely united Imperial Remnant that is under control of Grand Admiral Thrawn, at least in theory. So that raises the question: what is the relationship between the Shadow Council which governs the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling First Order? Join me as I theorize responsibly. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pageturnerstheywerenot/message

In an exhausted stupor after 4 days of Star Wars Celebration 2022 & sleep deprivation, we decided to talk at length about John Williams's "Obi-Wan" which he composed for the new Disney+ series, "Obi-Wan Kenobi". Sound analysis or incoherent ramblings? You be the judge. But regardless, this new piece is a gift from JDubs. It's beautiful. It's heartbreaking. It's complex. It's a masterwork. We also discuss some of our fave & least fave moments from Star Wars Celebration 2022. AND PLEASE ENJOY THE NEWLY MASTERED INTRO OF "FIRE ON THE BASE", THE UNKNOWN REGIONS PODCAST THEME composed by Collin Wittlich himself!

Today we discuss Crisis of Faith, Timothy Zahn's prequel to the original Thrawn trilogy. The Grand Admiral faces one of his toughest opponents in the Unknown Regions, a ruthless being known as Nuso Esva.
The Praetorian Guards aren't messing around, and neither is John Williams! Joining me today is Kyle Katarn. Together, we attempt to break down the sensational combat scoring, sound design, and awkward aftermath in minutes 106-110 of The Last Jedi. Discussion topics/Highlights: The music feels suspended in air before the first lightsaber clash. John Williams's music is just as well choreographed as the fight. Rey's theme is stated in a steady, declarative rhythm. DJ's line "they blow you up today, you blow them up tomorrow" might be a Battlefront II reference (specifically an attack scenario from Starfighter Assault map called Unknown Regions). Proficiency of lightsaber fighting and how the Force is involved. Praetorian guards! Their weapons, levels of articulation in the armor, family relationships. John Williams's exciting combat scoring. Rather than an "aggressive dance," it sounds more disorienting, like a "horn section falling down the stairs." Comparisons to Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, etc. The sound of Kylo Ren's lightsaber when he impales a guard and the crackling is going through his body. Kyle Katarn's favorite lightsaber sound in the saga is Luke Skywalker's green lightsaber in Return of the Jedi (specifically the sharp, piercing snap-hiss of the ignition) Awkward aftermath and "the talk." The musical silence while Rey and Kylo are talking heightens the intimacy of the scene. Kylo Ren's insecure, vulnerable, desperate manipulation. Kylo's "hesitant," meandering theme. How the music underscores Kylo and Rey's discordant aims. They're a dyad moving in opposite directions. Determined, purposeful music when Holdo gears up to take action. Possible reasons why Rey calls Kylo "Ben" so consistently.
