Bitters have been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years, and in cocktails for centuries. But they receive far less attention than the spirits in our glass. So today we're talking with the founders of a bitters company that has taken the craft cocktail scene by storm: Joseph Bennett & Yana Crow of Bennett Bitters. We discuss bitters in general; the complex process they use to produce some of the best bitters currently on the market; the inspiration behind Bennett Bitters; how they got started; and more.RELATED LINKS:Check out the Blister Craft CollectiveBecome a BLISTER+ MemberBennett BittersTOPICS & TIMES:How Joseph Got into Bitters (1:32)What are Bitters?? Todays episode is on current state of education, international students in the U.S., and the disconnect between universities, job markets, and the harsh realities faced by graduates.1. US universities urge international students to return to campus before Trump inaugurationhttps://www.cnn.com/2024/12/26/us/international-students-us-colleges-trump/index.html* Universities in the U.S. are urging their international students to return to the country before potential political changes occur, especially with the possibility of Donald Trump being sworn in again.* The fear stems from potential changes in immigration policies and visa rules that could impact students' ability to stay in the U.S.* This has created uncertainty among students and their families, as they are now worried about completing their education and securing jobs in the U.S.Read more on this story in above link. This was the Top News Story this week , which made headlines in national news. Very high level, this looks like because in 2016 trump restricted entry to U.S from few nations, so universities are taking caution to let their students return back to U.S before trump inauguration. This is not just about travel bans which may come up, there is a dark reality behind this news. 2. Record Numbers of International Students to US To understand why Universities are making this request. Check this link for actual facts about number of international students coming to U.S annually. https://opendoorsdata.org/annual-release/international-students/* In 2023/24, the total number of international students in the U.S. increased by 7% to a record high of 1,126,690 students.* The number of international students coming to the U.S. in 2023 has broken records, surpassing even pre-pandemic levels.* Universities have been offering more seats for postgraduate programs to international students, prioritizing revenue without factoring in the job market's ability to absorb these graduates.* This influx of students has led to oversaturation in some fields, particularly in technology and computer science.* Also Students moving here, International graduate students and students on OPT reached record highs. OPT: The number of international students who remained in the United States to gain practical work experience through Optional Practical Training (OPT) reached a record high of 242,782 students, an increase of 22% from the prior year.3. Disconnect Between Universities and Job Markets* Many universities are increasing enrollment in postgraduate programs, ignoring the availability of jobs in those fields.* Universities mainly focus on revenue by filling seats rather than on the actual job market conditions.* Students—both international and domestic—are graduating with high expectations of lucrative jobs that may not exist.* The gap between academic programs and industry needs is widening, leaving graduates frustrated and underpaid.4. U.S. Tech Job Market Reality* The U.S. tech job market has been volatile, with massive layoffs from companies like Google, Amazon, and Meta over the past year.* Entry-level positions in technology have become scarce, making it challenging for new graduates to secure employment.* Even when graduates find jobs, many are underpaid, earning as low as $35 per hour (~$70,000 per year).* In cities where tech jobs are concentrated—like San Francisco, Seattle, or New York—this pay is not sustainable due to the high cost of living, which often requires an income of $135,000 or more per year to live comfortably.5. Challenges for 2022 and 2023 Batches of Students* The 2022 batch of postgraduate students has started entering the job market in 2024, but many are struggling to find jobs six months into their Optional Practical Training (OPT) period.* The 2023 batch will face even greater challenges in 2025, as the tech job market continues to struggle with layoffs and economic uncertainty.* International students face additional challenges as they have limited time during their OPT period to secure employment, or they risk losing their legal status in the U.S.6. Salary Disparity and Cost of Living* Many jobs offered to international and domestic students in tech are paying far below market expectations.* Living expenses in major cities make it nearly impossible for graduates to save money or pay off student loans.* Students are increasingly questioning the return on investment (ROI) of U.S. higher education, given the low starting salaries compared to the high cost of education and living.7. Universities' Role in This Crisis* Universities are failing both international and domestic students by overselling the promise of well-paying jobs after graduation.* They are prioritizing their financial gain, enrolling record numbers of students, and not considering the long-term impact on students' careers.* U.S. universities have been criticized for not offering adequate support to international students, such as career counseling, job placement assistance, or realistic expectations about job prospects.* Domestic students, too, are suffering due to skyrocketing tuition costs and student loan debt, with no guarantee of securing jobs that allow them to pay off this debt.8. Shifting Trends in Education* More domestic students in the U.S. are opting out of traditional four-year college programs due to the high costs and poor job market outcomes.https://www.pbs.org/newshour/education/why-more-americans-are-skipping-college* Instead, they are enrolling in short-term skill-based programs, such as Google's six-month certifications, which are much more affordable and lead to well-paying jobs.https://grow.google/* Companies like Google and Microsoft are offering alternative pathways to employment that challenge the traditional education model, such as online courses, apprenticeships, and job-specific training.https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/training/* These programs provide students with practical skills in months rather than years, at a fraction of the cost of a traditional degree.9. The Outdated Narrative Around Education* The old belief that pursuing a postgraduate degree guarantees a high-paying job in a top-tier company no longer holds true in the U.S. job market.* Students are following outdated advice without considering the current realities, such as economic instability, a competitive job market, and rising living costs.* Many students are not researching job market trends, relying instead on the assumption that a U.S. degree will automatically lead to success.10. Future Challenges for 2025 and Beyond* The large number of students graduating in 2025 will likely overwhelm the job market further, especially in fields like computer science and data analytics.* Students need to start exploring alternative career paths, upskilling in niche areas, and networking early to improve their chances of employment.* International students must also prepare for uncertainties surrounding visa rules, OPT timelines, and job search challenges.11. Call to Action for Universities* Universities must align their academic offerings with job market demands, reducing oversaturation in popular fields like computer science.* They should offer more transparent data on career outcomes, helping students make informed decisions about their education.* Career counseling, internships, and partnerships with industry leaders should be mandatory to prepare students for the job market.* Universities should also advocate for policy changes that support international students, such as extended OPT timelines or simplified visa processes.12. Advice for Students and Families* Research the job market in your chosen field before committing to a degree program.* Consider the cost of living in the area where you plan to work after graduation and how much income you'll need to break even.* Look into alternative education paths like certifications, apprenticeships, and bootcamps that provide practical skills in a shorter time frame.* Network early, gain practical experience through internships, and focus on acquiring in-demand skills to improve employability.13. Closing Thoughts* The U.S. education system is facing a major crisis, with students graduating into a market that cannot meet their expectations or needs.* Universities need to prioritize students' futures over their own financial gain.* Students and families must make informed decisions, keeping the current economic and job market realities in mind.* It's time for a shift in how we view education and career preparation, moving away from outdated models and toward practical, skill-based learning. That is all for this week. Badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== Patreon.com/the_whiskeyshaman Foundnorthwhisky.com FOUND NORTH Each batch of Found North whisky is a careful selection of casks blended to bring out the best and most distinctive qualities of the chosen whiskies. Every release is unique, but each also builds on previous batches and fits into the unfolding saga of Found North. All our whiskies are non-chill filtered with no coloring or additives. Batch 001 and Batch 002 were released in April 2021 and both received Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Batch 003 was awarded Double Gold and Batch 004 won "Best Canadian Whisky" and was awarded Double Gold at the John Barleycorn Awards Spring 2022. Found North Hell DiverFirst Flight Description Hell Diver First Flight is the newest addition to our High Altitude Collection. Unlike our Batches where we blend fully matured whiskies, our High Altitude Collection is defined by the process of blend, finish, reblend. Adhering to this creation philosophy, Hell Diver started as a blend of 15, 22 and 23 year old corn with 18 and 19 year old rye, which we recasked into Pedro Ximénez Sherry, Cognac, and New American oak casks. Over the following year, we meticulously tracked these casks' progression, pulling and vatting them as they reached their peak maturation. To achieve the correct balance, we only used two-thirds of these casks in the final blend. We designed the original blend with Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks in mind. Sherry casks are heavy-handed and prone to overwhelm meek-spirited whisky. A domineering cask requires an imperious spirit. As such, we created a deep, rich and viscous original blend with prominent orchard fruit preserves, earthy rye spice and pronounced rose blossom water top notes. We believed this foundation would handle the sweet and dry resonance of PX Sherry casks. Flavor Notes A swirling aura of fig preserves, chocolate pound cake and straight cacao waft from the glass as the first pour flows from the bottle. The nose evolves into caramel, shortbread wafer and candied apricot with coffee ice cream and chocolate covered raspberries.‍Hell Diver lands like a power chord, strumming cinnamon, dark chocolate and wood spice on the front palate. This whisky is a maelstrom of layered flavor and texture. Like the wind and the tide, the oily-sweet viscosity on the tongue merges with the crackling nutmeg spice on the roof of the palate, meeting in the middle to create a tempest of tannin, graham cracker, vanilla and allspice, all tinged a deep shade of ruby red fruit. If your palate had eyes it would see claret. The flavors coalesce, the sea calms and the finish leaves you with reverberating notes of candied dates and cloves. Why We Made This Whisky For us, Found North is an ongoing journey, an unfolding story. When we made Peregrine, we had a vision for an elegant, elevated whisky; a bird, a blend and a style that could wear the crown of the High Altitude Collection. The resulting whisky embodied the high-soaring Peregrine Falcon that reaches for the heavens. As we contemplated the next chapter in the collection, we wanted to create Peregrine's counterpart. Though the loon is a great flier, traveling upwards of 500 miles in a single day, it is known for its aquatic prowess and its eerie nighttime call that haunts the foggy northern lakes of North America. Nicknamed the Hell Diver, the Common Loon is an uncommonly heavy bird allowing it to propel itself below the water's surface. And if you read this far Batch 10 release is right now so get it while you can.

Spotify ruined everything about uploading anything at all to the used to be called "anchored podcasts"... They put it to where you can only upload one file. At all. And you can't actually look through all the places. You can have audio files except for the PC desktop version, and a shittier version of the browser window on your phone. So you can't also record on the main app anymore either which is how I used to record these podcasts. In batches too. Now everybody's going to be getting like smaller pockets now because Spotify is a b**. And a piece of s* a literal piece of poop when it comes to anything that deals with in designing or anything else... It looks like I'm actually going to have to start freaking editing now for real if I'm actually going to get anything done to the original length that I used to do. Because used to I could record them. Batches not worry about it and it'd be done.

Jake and Scott sit down with the two newest Batches of the Jack Daniel's Aged Series of Tennessee Whiskey.  These include Batch 2 of the 12 Year and Batch 3 of the 10 Year.  How do they stack up and are they worth the hunt?  Find out in today's episode! The Jack Daniel Distillery recently announced the release of Batch 2 of its 12-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey and Batch 3 of its 10-Year-Old Tennessee Whiskey. The expressions are the latest in the Jack Daniel's Aged Series, an annual release of age-stated expressions launched in 2021 to honor the brand's whiskey-making traditions. While batches within the Aged Series will have slight variations, the predominant notes of oak, butterscotch and tobacco can be found in each whiskey. Jack Daniel's 12-Year-Old Batch 2 has predominant notes of pipe tobacco, oak, and butterscotch, while Jack Daniel's 10-Year-Old Batch 3 is oak-forward with layers of fruit and cocoa. Both expressions were charcoal mellowed and aged in new, toasted, and charred American white oak barrels first in the upper floors of our barrelhouse before being relocated to the lower ricks to extend the maturation process. Ever wished you could join a group of friends on a bourbon barrel picking adventure? Brace yourself, because that's exactly where we're taking you in our latest episode. We, the Scotchy Bourbon Boys, are thrilled to share our recent escapade at Heaven Hill in Bardstown, Kentucky, where we handpicked a unique nine-year-old barrel from the C923 batch. But that's not all, we'll also guide you through the intriguing batch numbering system and its release process at the gift shop. Now, let's talk about the pièce de résistance of our episode—the highly coveted C923 Barrel Proof bourbon. This bourbon has charmed many, including us, at the Bourbon in the Air event. With its rich amber color, thick viscosity, and complex flavors encapsulating caramel, hazelnut, cherry, and chocolate, it's a drink unlike any other. Despite its high proof, you'd be surprised by how smoothly it goes down. We cannot stress enough how much we recommend letting it sit in the glass for a bit—it's an experience you won't forget. But we're not done just yet! We have some exciting news about another Elijah Craig barrel proof pick and our upcoming Christmas party for Scotchy Bourbon Boys members. Setting up our podcast studio, planning the party at Gervasi Vineyard, discussing potential giveaways, reviewing the C923 batch—it's all happening and we can't wait for you to be a part of it. As always, we believe that the best things in life are good bourbon, good times, and good friends. So grab a glass, sit back, and join us on this enthralling journey. Cheers! Are “Bad Batches” of mRNA Causing Adverse Reactions? Dr. Vibeke Manniche Discusses Danish Research w/ Dr. Kelly Victory – Ask Dr. Drew – Episode 255

Are there differences between batches of mRNA vaccines – and are some more dangerous than others? Dr. Vibeke Manniche recently joined John Campbell to discuss a peer-reviewed research paper she coauthored titled “Batch-dependent safety of the BNT16b2 mRNA Covid-19 vaccine” published in the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, which appears to show connections between mRNA adverse reactions and specific batches. Scott Schara – father of Grace Schara – also joins the show to discuss his case against Ascension Health and the dangers of healthcare being entangled with financial incentives. Dr. Vibeke Manniche is a Danish physician, PhD, and author of 35 books. For over 34 years, she has focused on epidemiology and rare diseases. Dr. Manniche has spoken widely against lockdowns and COVID mandates since the earliest days of the pandemic. Dr Vibeke Manniche is a danish MD, Phd (within social medicine), author of 35 books mainly about children, family, sleep, and medicine and as a result is a very well known public figure in Denmark. Vibeke has been working with epidemiology in some way or another for most of her 34 years as a doctor. Both concerning rare diseases and public health. During the so called Covid Pandemic, she was the only danish doctor who from the very beginning spoke out against lockdowns and highlighted the lack of proportionality. Vibeke was vocal about the severe consequences that would arise with lockdowns. According to her "the numbers and science never allowed lockdowns - but fearmongering did". Although she has been a danish public figures for more than 30 years, this changed after March 2020 when she was heavily censored by the danish press. In this podcast we talk about a paper she co-authored looking into "bad batches" of the mRNA Covid experimental jabs. Enjoy.
