Xero co-founder Philip Fierlinger shares the story behind building one of the world's most successful accounting platforms, Xero He discusses his early inspiration from car dashboards and the gamification of bank reconciliations. Fierlinger also reveals how his latest startup Upstock is transforming the inefficient B2B food ordering process and levelling the playing field for small suppliers. Many of our listeners will know Philip Fierlinger as one of the 5 co-founders of Xero, but let me share with you a bit of background about Philip: For over 5 years, Philip has been creating digital products and experiences that have set new standards of design, business and technology. In 1992 a university project landed Philip an internship at General Magic where he conceptualised the “Mediaphone” a digital walkman, letting you download music anywhere, anytime. To give you some context this was 9 years before Steve Jobs introduced the iPod and 15 years before Jobs introduced the iPhone. Philip went on to create a digital agency, with his brother in 1994, doing work for Apple, the Beastie Boys, Comcast, Disney, Dreamworks, Macromedia, Palm, Sony Playstation, among many others. After moving to NZ, Philip co-founded Xero in 2006, where he was Head of Design for nearly 10 years. Philip was instrumental in Xero becoming a disruptive platform, an iconic global brand, and a market leading public company worth billions of dollars. And I suspect as he had a focus on design, he had something to do with making Xero beautiful software. Philip is currently Co-CEO of Upstock, a B2B wholesale platform that's transforming the way the foodservice industry operates. Along the way Philip has been an investor and advisor to numerous startups and scaleups including Sharesies, Milanote, Deputy, Atomic, Karbon, Chartio (sold to Atlassian) – helping with product, marketing, growth, team & culture, and investor strategy. In this episode, I talk to Philip Fierlinger Co-Ceo of UpStock.app about . . . Career journey from car design to tech entrepreneurship. Xero's history, developing an accounting system with a focus on bank feeds and beautiful design. Prioritising business operations over tax compliance with real-time cash flow visibility. How a three year old inspired the innovative design of Xero Launching a foodservice marketplace, digitising B2B transactions. The business model and pricing for a B2B marketplace. Streamlining foodservice industry operations with UpStock platform. A platform for farmers and suppliers to connect and grow their businesses. You have been listening to the Cloud Stories podcast. Casey Fenton ~ Founder of CouchSurfing and Upstock ~ Current Series ~ 100 Interviews with 100 Major Influencers Imagine being a young man hacking the University of Iceland's directory to meet new people and trying to find a couch to crash on for a free place to stay. Then turning that concept into a 20 million person platform that changed the way people travel. Casey Fenton is that young man and the platform he built is called Couch Surfing. Casey joins us on the podcast today for a really exciting chat. These days Casey has built a new business called Upstock that is modernizing an antiquated stock option system that allows team members and employees to earn equity instantly without an undue cash burden on the company. He got this idea from his days at CouchSurfing when he didn't have the ability to give his team and employees a shared part of the company. This frustrated him and it created a passion that started Upstock and the drive to help businesses help themselves. We dive into Casey's passion about Upstock today but also chat about the book on human egos that Casey is writing. He has another mission to help people understand their egos better and how we can use them for good. Of course, we also discuss about the Couch Surfing story and how it led Casey on a wild ride of world travel, startups, venture capitalists, challenges with the US taxation system, helping business grow and changing the way people travel all around the world. 04:19: Climbing the Great Pyramids 08:46: Casey on His New Business Upstock 17:50: Examples of Sharing Equity w/ Team Members 23:16: Casey on Gamifying Business 26:06: Ideas on Gamifying for Entrepreneurs Today 31:46: Ego Hacking 45:01: The First Couch That Casey Surfed On 48:47: Number One Lesson from CouchSurfing 51:32: Other Lessons from CouchSurfing 55:31: Casey on Influence Contact Info: https://upstock.io/ http://www.caseyfenton.com/ http://bit.ly/egohack

In this episode Trent and Casey discuss some of the techniques Casey has been researching and presenting that are going to be included in his new book which he's still working on. "It is so important to think about how we become our identity. We have to be very careful with how we are programmed. What is in our identity? What does that cause? We automatically find more of it, whatever it is. A lot of the time the authentic self is intuitively what I feel in my heart and soul, but maybe that authentic self was programmed by society, maybe that was no programmed by you. Maybe that authentic self means self author." "It is interesting, is the ego, is the identity, are the things inside me, are they self authored? Or are they authored by others? We want to rationalize who we are, we want to feel good. We want to say, 'oh well I made all that stuff,' but did we?" -Casey Fenton Check out part two of this interview: Health Hacks with Casey Fenton Production and music by Derek Bernard - https://haberdasherband.com/production Host: Trent Lapinski - https://trentlapinski.com
