This week, I'm tackling a question I get asked more than almost any other. Which social media platform should you actually be on? And what on earth should you post once you're there? I break down: Why a podcast feels lonely while social media doesn't, and what that taught me about marketing The reason it now takes 7 or 8 touch points before someone trusts you enough to get in touch Why "when you confuse, you lose" should shape every post you write The one platform I'd tell any accountant to start with, and why the algorithm is on your side Why your audience is on LinkedIn even when you're convinced they're not How to create content that gets a booked call, not just likes The contrarian truth about using AI to write your posts, and why I ignore the people who say don't Why video will make you stand out, especially if you're a female accountant How one of my Accelerator members found a warm lead worth £25-30k in fees within a week of posting daily This episode is sponsored by Karbon, the practice management platform we recently moved to after 12 years on our previous system. In this episode, I share how AI is transforming the way I work, market, create content, build systems, follow up with prospects, and even prepare accounts and tax returns. More importantly, I explain what this means for accountants and firm owners. Inside this episode you'll discover: ✅ Why I believe many accountants are still only scratching the surface of AI ✅ How I'm using Claude to save hours every week ✅ The AI-powered client acquisition system we're building inside Power Positioning Accelerator ✅ How AI can help you create content, dashboards, lead magnets and outreach campaigns ✅ Why LinkedIn remains the fastest route to winning new clients ✅ Practical examples you can start using immediately If you're wondering how AI will impact your firm over the next few years, this episode is essential listening. ---- If you've enjoyed my podcasts, here's how you can get more value from me: Free stuff Get a free copy of my book The Four Pillars from here Watch a short 8 min video on how you can win new clients whilst you sleep here Join 1500+ accountants owners in the Profitable Accountant Free Facebook group My inner-circle Join 150+ accounting firm owners in the Profitable Accountants Community (the PAC) to get access to the tools, training and tribe to help you grow your firm - without wasting time and money doing it the hard way. From micromanagement to missed promotions, hosts get real about bad bosses—and when the problem is you.Accounting ARCWith Liz Mason and Byron PatrickCenter for Accounting TransformationIn a candid, unfiltered episode of Accounting ARC, Liz Mason, CPA, CEO of High Rock Accounting, and Byron Patrick, CPA.CITP, senior product manager at Karbon and co-founder of TB Academy, confront one of the profession's most relatable—and uncomfortable—topics: bad bosses. But the conversation goes further than workplace horror stories. Mason and Patrick explore a more nuanced reality: sometimes the boss is the problem—and sometimes it's the employee. This week, I'm diving into one of the biggest bottlenecks inside accounting firms. Pricing. More specifically, why most accountants are still pricing from gut feel, comparing themselves to firms that also don't know how to price properly, and unknowingly leaving huge amounts of value on the table. I break down: • Why charging by the hour makes less sense than ever in the AI era • Why your real value is not the tax return or accounts • The hidden value accountants forget to charge for • Why access to you is the most valuable thing clients buy • How pricing systems remove you as the bottleneck • The variables that should drive pricing • Why clients should pay upfront and monthly • How to stop “making up fees” on the fly • The psychology behind premium pricing and client choice • How AI and agents are changing the future of accounting firms I also share behind-the-scenes updates on building Power Pricing, how AI is helping me build faster than traditional development ever could, and why systems are becoming essential for firms that want more time, better clients, and higher profits. And why that's not always a bad thing.Full show notes hereGear Up for GrowthWith Jean Caragher“Success doesn't have to look like going up and to the right,” says Ian Vacin, co-founder and director of partnership relationships at Karbon, in this episode of Gear Up for Growth, hosted by Jean Caragher, president of Capstone Marketing. “You have to understand what you want as a firm owner, align your revenue with your resources, and build the scaffolding to support that complexity. Otherwise, profitability falls, and you may not recover.”Vacin, along with Jason Blumer, founder and CEO of Thriveal and Blumer & Associates CPAs, wrote the new book, Scale with Purpose: The Service Entrepreneur's Guide to Intentional Growth. Drawing from research involving hundreds of firms worldwide, Blumer and Vacin reveal that only about 5% of firms successfully navigate their first major growth phase without setbacks. The authors say that organizational design must precede capacity planning. Without thoughtful structure, firms hit predictable scaling plateaus, particularly between 8 and 20 employees.READ MORE > > >

In this episode, I go from talking about loneliness as a firm owner… to where AI is rapidly taking the accounting profession. I share my thoughts on: • Why most accountants still feel stuck despite working harder than ever• How joining the right community changes your standards and beliefs• Why human relationships still matter in an AI world• The real reason some firms grow fast whilst others stay trapped in the weeds• How I used Claude AI to prepare accounts, working papers, and financial statements• Why the pace of AI change is much faster than most people realise• What firm owners should actually focus on over the next few years I also talk about buying back your time, building a business that gives you more freedom, and why the future belongs to accountants who learn to combine technology with strong business skills. This one is part mindset, part strategy, and part glimpse into what's coming next for the profession.

Jason Ackerman, Co-Managing Partner at BNA Advisors, helped grow the firm from a $1.5 million firm to over $7 million organically, without acquiring a single practice. He joined his father's firm in 2012, scaled the team from 14 to 35 people, and built systems that allow the firm to handle more than 2,000 individual tax returns per year. His approach combines practical technology adoption, intentional pricing strategy, and a long view on people and talent. This is the fifth episode in our Power of Focus series and Jason's story is a strong example of what is possible when a firm stops trying to do everything and starts doing the right things well. This episode digs into the specific tools and tactics Jason's team is using right now, during tax season. His firm is rolling out 8821 authorizations for every client so they can pull IRS transcripts through Tax Now, catching payment discrepancies and missed filings before they become problems. They are also using a payment platform called Remission to schedule quarterly estimated payments for clients in one place. They're reducing the back-and-forth and keeping the firm proactive rather than reactive. Both moves are part of a broader philosophy: reduce what the client has to do, increase what the firm can see.The through line of this conversation is intentionality. Jason is not automating things for the sake of automation, he's not chasing every new AI platform, and he's not pricing low to win volume. Every decision connects back to a clear standard: does this make the practice better, or does it just add noise? That kind of focus, applied consistently over more than a decade, is how a $1.5 million firm becomes a $7 million firm without a single acquisition. This episode is for CPA firm owners curious about building scalable systems without outside capital, practitioners ready to revisit their pricing strategy before the next season, firm managers wondering how to develop staff into more business-aware team members, and accounting practice owners thinking ahead about talent and technology in a changing industry.Timestamps00:36 - Jason Ackerman introduces BNA Advisors: $7M firm, organic growth, and co-founding a software startup01:08 - Growing a CPA firm from $1.5M to $7M without acquisitions since 201202:21 - Series context: practice management tactics for tax season 202603:23 - Why tax compliance still requires real expertise despite the shift toward advisory05:07 - The 8821 strategy: pulling IRS transcripts proactively for every accounting client06:46 - Using Remission to schedule and track quarterly estimated tax payments08:24 - The biggest operational pain points BNA solved as the firm scaled to 35 people09:22 - Why Karbon became a cornerstone of BNA's CPA firm practice management system10:52 - How to approach technology adoption: change one thing at a time12:15 - How Jason evaluates new software as an early adopter in the accounting industry13:22 - A measured take on AI tools: waiting for the market to shake out15:56 - How private equity is reshaping the accounting talent pipeline27:42 - Why value pricing is the single biggest lever for CPA firm owners preparing to sell29:21 - Why pricing high from the start attracts better accounting clients and protects your time30:38 - Book recommendation: discussion of the Karbon co-founder book featuring BNA Download Now: https://poegroupadvisors.com/accounting-practice-academy/increase-letter/Price increases are nothing to fear.

Mary Delaney, CEO of Karbon, opens Episode 250 of The Unique CPA with a powerful story: she tells Randy about a neighbor whose accountant didn't just crunch numbers but delivered life-changing advice that transformed his business into a legacy. That moment crystallizes what technology can unlock for the profession. Rather than something to be feared, it has the potential to grant us the freedom to focus on advisory work that truly matters. Mary explains how automation handles the mundane, potentially flipping the statistic that 80% of small businesses fail by year ten. With the right technology, every small business could access some level of advisory support. But accountants must make a critical shift: to stop thinking like practitioners and start running their firms as businesses. Mary shares her own experience growing a compliance-heavy services company from single-digit margins to 25%, emphasizing the importance of identifying levers, whether that's increasing referrals, automating workflows, or offshoring strategically. Empowered people deliver exceptional client experiences, and it's not people first or clients first, it's both, simultaneously. Get the full show notes and more resources at TheUniqueCPA.com
