The mayor receives some difficult news from her image consultants and goes under the knife to initiate a bid for the Senate. Rose hits a breaking point with Gaines as a domestic call turns into one of the stranger musical numbers either has witnessed. Vicki, Ruskin, and Campo take a back seat as guest characters and the chief of police take point in this week's songs. Is it a sign of things to come? Erik and Justin try to figure out the mystery of Paul McCrane's sudden presence on the show. The mayor's storyline comes under scrutiny as actor Barbara Bosson was married to creator Steven Bochco at the time. Justin comes to believe The Shield creator Shawn Ryan watched Cop Rock. On Dec. 11, 1961, Langston Hughes' musical play Black Nativity, a retelling of the Christmas story, premiered on Broadway. Featuring traditional carols infused with gospel stylings and original compositions, it was among the first plays by an African-American writer to be performed on Broadway. Born in 1902, Hughes was a celebrated poet, playwright, novelist, and social activist whose legacy as a cultural leader continues to resonate. He passed away in 1967, but his work endures. In 2013, Black Nativity was adapted into a film directed by Kasi Lemmons. The movie featured a star-studded cast including Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese Gibson, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. On 13th September 1996, Tupac Shakur died in a still-unexplained killing (well, unless Eminem just blew the case wide open). Writing partners Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had already managed to get several scripts made into films but there was plenty more left on the cutting room floor from projects that never got picked up or pieces of stories that were deemed too ambitious that the pair called their “murdered darlings.” Armed with those ideas along with an intense desire to write something that would scare each other, Collins and Piotrowski started to develop an idea for a new script that would deal with a subject that was truly terrifying — the intense reality of mortality. Despite never having suffered through any intense grief in their own lives yet knowing that death is looming around the corner for all of us and the ones we love, they decided to explore that as a setting for a film. The final story centered around a woman named Beth who is trying to make sense of her husband's shocking suicide and the trove of secrets he was keeping from her that she begins to uncover in the wake of his death.
