On Dec. 11, 1961, Langston Hughes' musical play Black Nativity, a retelling of the Christmas story, premiered on Broadway. Featuring traditional carols infused with gospel stylings and original compositions, it was among the first plays by an African-American writer to be performed on Broadway. Born in 1902, Hughes was a celebrated poet, playwright, novelist, and social activist whose legacy as a cultural leader continues to resonate. He passed away in 1967, but his work endures. In 2013, Black Nativity was adapted into a film directed by Kasi Lemmons. The movie featured a star-studded cast including Forest Whitaker, Angela Bassett, Tyrese Gibson, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. On 13th September 1996, Tupac Shakur died in a still-unexplained killing (well, unless Eminem just blew the case wide open). What it turns out instead is a piece of content so forgettable, the CIA wouldn't have to lift a finger to disappear it from public memory.Initially, The Recruit appears to be a fish-out-of-water comedy. The first time we meet Owen, he's singing Taylor Swift to himself during a pee break while on a life-or-death mission in Russia; the second time we see him, after the show rewinds two weeks, he's slapping his knees to Nelly's “Hot in Herre” while waiting to meet his big-shot boss (Vondie Curtis-Hall) during his second day on the job. In no time at all, the rookie's gotten himself tangled up in a case involving a volatile off-the-books asset, Max Meladze (Laura Haddock), who's threatened to reveal damning agency secrets — and all before he's even figured out the office policies around booking plane tickets.But The Recruit is not really a comedy at all, despite a smattering of halfhearted jokes. (“The eagle has landed,” a CIA suit says of Owen, to which his colleague scoffs: “The eagle? More like the idiot.” Zing!) Nor does it seem quite thrilling enough to qualify as a thriller, though Doug Liman, who directed the first two episodes, brings some of his Bourne shaky-cam style to its occasional fistfights and gunfights. It's sort of meant to be a character study of Owen, I guess, except that The Recruit never seems able to make up its mind about who he's supposed to be either.The dialogue would seem to point one way: To hear his law school buddies tell it, he's a thrill-seeking playboy whose savior complex covers a bruised heart and a selfish streak — sort of a younger, greener, Gen-Z Bond. (One episode makes the comparison explicit when Owen, dressed in a borrowed tuxedo, is offered a martini; he turns it down for a White Claw.) Centineo's performance, on the other hand, reads as far too puppyish to sell the arrogance needed for that archetype. The show itself seems torn between laughing at Owen and admiring him, though many of his accomplishments don't actually seem that impressive: At one point, his colleague is bowled over to see Owen, a lawyer, bring a rogue agent to heel by reminding him that he could get sued.The weakness of Owen as a character might be forgivable in an ensemble piece, where other leads could take up the slack. But he's the center of the universe in The Recruit. Owen's coworkers seem obsessed with him, whether they're flirting with him in the hallway or cooking up new ways to sabotage him in front of their boss. Likewise his non-CIA friends — in particular his ex-turned-roommate Hannah (Fivel Stewart), who announces, “I don't want to be that girl who says she's worried about you” before spending the rest of the season worrying about him so hard that her own friends and family start to worry about her.Still, the world around Owen does yield some highlights. Haddock seems to be having great fun as Meladze, donning the half-smirk of a woman who knows she's winning a game no one else is even aware they're playing — and, later, the guarded pain of someone running from a past too painful to remember. The only aspect of her character she's not able to sell is the supposedly simmering sexual tension with Owen, not least because the tough, cunning Meladze seems like she could eat this clueless 24-year-old alive.Also entertaining is Bruun's Janus. The Recruit‘s one truly funny runner involves the never-ending battle between Janus, frazzled but offering prudent legal counsel, and the special operation team, whom he describes as being like “if meth became sentient and was given weaponry.” So determined is spec ops to embark on exciting but definitely illegal missions that they'll stoop to drugging him so he can't advise them to stop — a hilarious but disturbing window into the thought process that's gone into some of American intelligence's shadiest projects. It's in Janus that the show's potential for black comedy comes through most clearly, and it's too bad he's mostly relegated to the background of Owen's storyline.2. Hell Dogs, directed by Masato Harada, The movie runs for 2 hours Shogo Kanetaka (Junichi Okada) is a police officer, who suffers from trauma when his loved one was murdered. Since that horrific time, Shogo Kanetaka has only thought about revenge. He then receives an order to go undercover as a yakuza member. The police instructs Shogo Kanetaka to pick a fight with yakuza member Hideki Murooka (Kentaro Sakaguchi) as a stepping stone to gain entrance into the organization. The police have data that shows Shogo Kanetaka is matched with Hideki Murooka 98%. Meanwhile, Hideki Murooka is the son of a death-row convict. He has a physical condition, where is he always hungry and constantly eating. Writing partners Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had already managed to get several scripts made into films but there was plenty more left on the cutting room floor from projects that never got picked up or pieces of stories that were deemed too ambitious that the pair called their “murdered darlings.” Armed with those ideas along with an intense desire to write something that would scare each other, Collins and Piotrowski started to develop an idea for a new script that would deal with a subject that was truly terrifying — the intense reality of mortality. Despite never having suffered through any intense grief in their own lives yet knowing that death is looming around the corner for all of us and the ones we love, they decided to explore that as a setting for a film. The final story centered around a woman named Beth who is trying to make sense of her husband's shocking suicide and the trove of secrets he was keeping from her that she begins to uncover in the wake of his death. A North Carolina native, Anthony grew up with the desire to act from an early age. His college years were interrupted by some harrowing twists and turns, but Anthony graduated from East Carolina University in 1992 with a BFA in Communication Arts. In 1993, he drove west with a friend to Los Angeles where he slept on the floor of his high school friend, Keith Coulouris' apartment in Studio City, CA. Keith was instrumental in Anthony getting a bit part in, Dead Man's Revenge, a USA network movie of the week, starring Bruce Dern, Michael Ironside and Vondie Curtis-Hall. Upon realizing the high cost of living in LA, Anthony returned to the East Coast, to study, as he had no business on a film set without formal training. He spent just shy of two years in Atlanta, taking classes and auditioning, before his then agent, Ted Borden urged him to make the big move to Manhattan to study at The Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. In 1995, Anthony did just that. He lived in a NYU dorm with a student he met on his flight to New York after the living situation he had arranged prior to the move fell apart upon his arrival. The front door to the apartment that he was to be staying in had been kicked in and the tenants robbed the night before. He ended up bouncing between apartments on the Upper East and West Sides of the city for a few years. Concurrent to his studies at Strasberg Anthony studied privately with acting coaches Michael Margotta and Geoffrey Horne. While performing off-off Broadway in numerous black box theaters, Anthony met Lamya Jezek in 1997. Two years later, upon her graduation from NYU's Tisch School for Acting, the newly engaged couple moved to Los Angeles as Lamya had secured representation. They were married July 14, 2001, in North Carolina. In LA, Anthony studied with Milton Katselas at The Beverly Hills Playhouse and later took classes with Lesly Kahn in the Hollywood Hills, but found that the best training of all, was working on sets with other actors. He had the privilege of working with Academy Award Nominated actor, Edward Norton for nine years on several films as well as Academy Award Winner, Billy Bob Thornton on four films. Anthony maintains a number of relationships in NY and LA, but chose to leave the city life to return to his Southern roots to raise his family. Anthony and his family have resided on the East Coast since 2008 where he has been blessed beyond his wildest dreams by being able to work consistently in film and television as a character actor. Some of the highlights of Anthony's career have been working with some of Hollywood's most celebrated actors. He has had roles on both the small and big screens. On television Anthony has made appearances on “Homeland,” opposite Damien Lewis, “Revenge,” “Nashville” and “The Red Road,” opposite Martin Henderson and Jason Momoa. Anthony can be seen in the upcoming USA drama “Complications” opposite Jason O'Mara. He has feature film roles in “The Hunger Games” opposite Jennifer Lawrence, “Iron Man 3,” “Prisoners” opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Anthony will be seen in the upcoming films, “Cell,” opposite John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, “Project Almanac,” and the new reboot of Marvel's “Fantastic Four” franchise opposite Tim Blake Nelson. Anthony wrote and produced a short film entitled “Times Like Dying,” a post Civil War drama that recently World Premiered at the Cucalorus Film Festival. “Times Like Dying” is currently making the film festival rounds.
