This week we're going down under for a look at the 1989 post-apocalypse sports movie, Blood of Heroes starring Rutger Hauer and Joan Chen. Also known as Salute of the Jugger, it's a late entry into the Maxploitation wave of the 80's but rather than being the usual quest for water or women, it's an underdog story about a team of misfits who play a violent future sport involving a dog's skull instead of a ball. What's a jugger? Don't worry about it, baby! Will they climb the ranks out of their place beating up on village and peasant teams? Will they make it to the big city and win it all when they face the pros? Probably. I mean, it's a sports movie at heart and that's what usually happens in those movies.Blood of Heroes sports a significantly better cast than you're probably expecting with Hauer, Chen, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Delroy Lindo all slumming it. The production is also executed by a surprising cohort of filmmakers who we have to thank for the original Mad Max movies which explains why it's so competently made and looks so authentically post-apocalyptic from the people who brought us the subgenre in the first place.Join the Bring Me The Axe Discord: https://discord.gg/snkxuxzJSupport Bring Me The Axe! on Patreon: https://patreon.com/bringmetheaxepodBuy Bring Me The Axe merch here:https://www.bonfire.com/store/bring-me-the-axe-podcast/

Jason G and I saw Sinners on April 17, 2025. We both enjoyed the movie. Initially, I felt it was boring and didn't care about the characters' backstory. I even dozed off a few times. Jason thought it was a little slow to start, but it improved as the movie progressed. We go into further detail in our spoiler review. Check out the audio and video we recorded right after seeing the film, as usual. Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. Mike and Kenny review and spot faith reflected in the latest film from writer / director Ryan Coogler which stars Michael B. Jordon in dual roles as Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" Moore, twin brothers returning from a mysterious time Chicago to their Mississippi Delta home town to start again. Set in the 1930's "Smoke" and "Stack," flush with cash and mystery on how they made it, seek to start again by opening a Juke Joint for the black community in their town. Amidst the challenges they were expecting such as from the Klan, their biggest threat is supernatural evil. Faith Spotted: The destructive power of temptation and greed, whether for riches, power, influence, or eternal life. Although sin and the brokenness of the world impact all of creation, people have freedom and choose to invite or let sin and unrighteousness into their lives. As taught in Scripture, God offers people the freedom to accept relationship with, and righteousness of, God. Likewise people choose to accept or invite sin/the Devil into their lives, rather than it invading or taking over. Life outside the grace and love of God is not a blessing but a burden that imprisons the body and destroys one's spirit. The film depicts the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 10:28 that one should not fear that which can kill only the body, but fear that which kills the soul. The vampire /Dracula mythology and symbolism that dates back thousands of years depicts the struggle of evil against good. The place and role of music in black culture and the black church.
From Ryan Coogler's vision to the captivating performances of Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo, "Sinners" is a horror movie that demands attention. We're dissecting the film's themes of redemption, race damnation, and the haunting power of blues music within a vampire narrative. It's the most talked about original film the industry has seen in years and it's definitely one we had to explore on Back To The Blockbuster as Coogler has truly crafted a masterpiece for the ages.

Have you ever been watching a classic vampire movie like “Fright Night” or “The Lost Boys” and thought, “This is good, but this could be great with two of the guy who played Apollo Creed's kid in those ‘Creed' movies as well as some blues music and a dash of racial commentary!”? Well, put up your black square on Instagram and clutch your George Floyd bobblehead in celebration because a celebration is a comin'! Your reason for celebrating is the movie “Sinners” from director Ryan Coogler. He directed the Black Panther movies and the first two Creed movies and sinks his teeth into the vampire genre with his latest movie. No “Wakanda Forever” in this. More like “Live Forever” in this southern-fried take on vampire movies. Coogler's favorite leading man, Michael B. Jordan plays both Smoke and Stacks (Get it. Smokestack!), identical twins who've made a name and some money in the criminal game. Now they're coming home back down south from Chicago to open up their own juke joint for dancing, drinking and gambling. Their own little taste of Vegas in the Deep South. Along the way they pick up their younger cousin, Preacher Boy Sammie, who is very talented with a guitar and a blues voice from the heavens. He's played by the impressive Miles Caton. Before long, some vampires show up to try to make the good times last forever but in a blood-sucking evil way and the movie goes from bluesy crime drama to stakes in the heart and burning vampires. Is it worth your time at the theater? Check out this episode to find out! “Sinners” also stars Delroy Lindo, Jack O'Connell, Hailee Steinfeld, Yao, Saul Williams and Omar Miller. Ryan Coogler's Sinners is one of the year's best films: a purposefully messy vampire metaphor just overflowing with passion and ideas, painted across a tapestry of folklore, diegetic blues, and epic horror. It's why we go to the movies. We discuss its deep roster of incredible performances and its myriad of themes that catapult it beyond standard bloodsucker fare.

Pray for our Sinners….so that we might have GREAT CINEMA!!!!Brilliant, commercially and critically successful director Ryan Coogler has gifted us with Coogler #5: Sinners, a Jim Crow-era set, period drama-hybrid-horror-musical fusion. The Boys review the film starring Michael B. Jordan playing twins(!) and a wonderful cast of veterans (Delroy Lindo, Omar Benson Miller, Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell) and newcomers (Miles Caton, Li Jun Li, Jayme Lawson). HAPPY 400TH EPISODE - Thanks to all listeners and subscribers for your continued support!!! :)Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) are twin brothers who also are both recent World War I veterans and Chicago gangsters. It's 1932 and they have now returned to their home town in the MIssissippi Delta to start their own juke joint. They find the right spot and recruiter plenty of friends and family to get involved including their cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) who plays a mean guitar and Smoke's ex-wife Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) who cooks some great catfish. They gather various talent and kick off what looks like a promising night of blues music and merry......though there appear to be some unexpected visitors who come calling lead by Remmick (Jack O' Connell) and needless to say, these guys seem to be thirsty....though not for what you would expect. :o And what results is one wild, CRAZY night....not every one is likely to survive that night either! Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Jayme Lawson are also part of this extended cast in this raucous horror musical (?) from Oscar-nominated director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed). Send us a textA stunning achievement in genre filmmaking, "Sinners" transports us to the Mississippi Delta of 1932 where twin brothers find themselves caught between supernatural evil and the harsh realities of Jim Crow America. Ryan Coogler's masterful direction elevates what could have been a standard vampire tale into something truly extraordinary – a rich, textured exploration of brotherhood, community, and survival against impossible odds.Michael B. Jordan delivers what might be his career-best performance, portraying twins Smoke and Stack with such distinct personalities that you'll forget you're watching one actor in dual roles. The brothers return to their hometown with dreams of uplifting their community through music and business, only to face threats both supernatural and all-too-human. When Irish vampire Jack O'Connell arrives with his coven, promising eternal life but demanding blood sacrifice, the brothers must decide what they're willing to sacrifice to protect their people.Shot on breathtaking 70mm IMAX by cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw (the first woman to use this camera format), every frame feels like a painting that deserves to be studied. The film embraces darkness in ways few mainstream movies dare, creating a visual language that enhances both the horror elements and the historical setting. Ludwig Göransson's blues-infused score weaves throughout, becoming as essential to the storytelling as the dialogue itself. What makes "Sinners" truly special is how it refuses to be contained by genre expectations. Coogler seamlessly blends horror, drama, action, and even musical elements without ever losing focus on the emotional core of his story. The supporting cast shines throughout – Haley Steinfeld brings fire and strength, newcomer Miles Catton impresses in his debut, and Delroy Lindo delivers gravitas as Delta Slim. Yuami Masuku's portrayal of a hoodoo practitioner adds another layer to this richly textured world.Don't miss this landmark film that critics are calling the most original and exciting theatrical experience of the year. See it in IMAX if possible – your eyes, ears, and heart will thank you.Support the show
IAP might have a different, and very likely unpopular, opinion about Ryan Coogler's new highly acclaimed film SINNERS. For this episode host Wood asks three major questions about details that the bigger, more popular podcasts seemingly overlooked. Overall, salute to Coogler, lead actor Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Benson Miller, Delroy Lindo and Hailee Stanfeld. However, I dig the movie but hold onto some degree of objectivity to question why some choices were made with character development, as well as historical accuracy when it comes to the dialogue. So let's talk about the hottest movie of 2025. And if you don't dig the opinions and views shared here - well, It's Always Personal.
No half-measures on the podcast this week as we cover some of the year's best content. On the movie side, we talk about 'Sinners,' Ryan Coogler's mind-blowing 1930s historical Delta blues movie–with vampires. Stephen Garrett hadn't even heard of this movie until about two weeks ago, and it was a five-star shocker for him. Neal Pollack, equally skeptical, equally and totally blown away. Coogler delivers a show-stopping musical number at the movie's midpoint, at which point a ton of vampire mayhem sets in and completely transforms the narrative. But it's testimony to how amazing Sinners is that the movie is perfectly entertaining even before the vampires take over. And then, once they do, it's as thrilling a horror movie as you'll ever see. Michael B. Jordan gives a career-defining performance as the twins at the center of the narrative. Hallee Steinfeld absolutely steams off the screen as a femme fatale for the ages. Jack O'Connell is one of the most sinister and compelling movie villains that we've seen in a long time, and Delroy Lindo lands a sure Oscar nomination as an old Delta bluesman who's comic relief, except when he's not. This is one of the best American movies in a long while, and it will be certain to be a huge contender for an awards season that doesn't start for another nine months. Sinners gets the BFG podcast's highest recommendation. Also heavily in the plus column, though maybe not quite as heavily, is the new season of Black Mirror. Omar Gallaga swoops into the pod dome to talk to Neal about the seventh season of Charlie Brooker's tech dystopia sci-fi anthology show. By this point we're all comfortable enough with Black Mirror's twists and tropes that they've ceased to be shocking, but there are few things on TV as satisfying as a well-executed Black Mirror episode. And this season is well-executed even by Black Mirror standards. Omar thinks that some of them run a bit long, but there are still plenty of twists and and thought-provoking ideas about tech, as well as some dark laughs and plenty of Easter eggs for true fans. It's a great week to be a fan of pop culture, and to listen to the BFG Podcast!

Exactly one year after his historic comeback in the seminal Pulp Fiction (which he received an Oscar nomination for), John Travolta followed it up with this slick and crime caper/satire adapted from the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name. Here he plays Chili Palmer, a mob enforcer from Miami who LOVES movies, is visiting Los Angeles for the first time, and finds himself very eager to get into the movie business. Once there, he meets a schlock producer (Gene Hackman - RIP), a scream queen (Rene Russo), a pretentious movie star (Danny DeVito), and a menacing wanna-be producer (Delroy Lindo)....among several others. And wouldn't you know it....Chili finds himself getting involved in the movie business. :) Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men In Black), this would go on to be on of the more quotable and fondly remembered crime comedies of the '90's featuring a cast including several other legends including Bette Midler, the late great Dennis Farina, and the late, great James Gandolfini. "Sinners" is the newest film by director Ryan Coogler, and it's quite unlike anything else you'll likely see this year. It is a Deep Jim Crow South-era gangster film that turns into a vampire action horror film with its soul infused with blues music.
