When a controversial moment goes live on a tape-delayed broadcast, who's really accountable — the person, the organization, or both?In this episode of The Common Knowledge Podcast with Marcus L-Spade Johnson, we break down the BAFTA incident involving Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, and John Davidson — the timeline, the apologies, and the bigger question everyone keeps arguing about: what does real accountability actually look like? We're talking intent vs impact, public apologies vs direct accountability, and why the people most affected should never be an afterthought. This isn't about cancel culture — it's about clarity, responsibility, and who gets centered when harm happens in public.

The BBC is apologizing after a racial slur was shouted during the BAFTAs last night in London. Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo (both Oscar nominees for "Sinners") were presenting the first award of the night when the n-word could be heard shouted out in the theater. The show host later apologized to the audience and blamed the outburst on a man's Tourette Syndrome. But that didn't stop an intense and heated debate online; many suggesting there's no way this was a coincidence. Whatever you do, please listen to the end of this episode where Amy and T. J. apply context and explain "coprolalia," a term you might not be familiar with but might explain why the incident might not have anything to do with racism. CW: This episode contains discussion of sexual assault and violence, including abuse of minors, in relation to recent revelations in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Listener discretion advised. Some Big News Weeks led us to a slightly unwieldy conversation about several topics alongside Joel Schumacher's 1999 thriller 8mm. Written by Se7en scribe Andrew Keving Walker and boasting a rich ensemble cast including Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, and Peter Stormare, the film explores elite depravity, snuff films, and the dark core of the American dream where desperate people's lives become a commodity. We first begin with some thoughts on recent events at the Berlin Film Festival and offer our definitive answer to the question on everyone's lips, "Is cinema political?" Then, we venture into Schumacher's film, a not-very-good grisly crime thriller with some resonant considerations about the brutalization of young women within the machinery of capital. Finally, we share some personal thoughts on the most recent releases from the Epstein Files, what they tell us about the nature of power in the world, and offer up an alternative movie title for those thinking more deeply about the case's reverberations. The show was provided legal guidance that the broadcast could trigger the FCC equal-time rule for two other candidates," and "The Late Show decided to present the interview through its YouTube channel rather than potentially providing the equal-time options." Welcome back to Not A Bomb!—the podcast where we resurrect cinema's most infamous box office disasters and ask the burning question: was it really that bad? We're celebrating five years of cinematic redemption. For the month of February, Not A Bomb is shining a spotlight on some of the greatest Black directors in cinematic history. This week, Troy and Brad take on their very first Spike Lee joint with his 1995 crime drama Clockers — a film that blends gritty realism, moral complexity, and Lee's unmistakable visual style.Set in a Brooklyn housing project, Clockers allows Spike Lee to use his sharp eye for cultural tension, systemic injustice, and the lived realities of urban America, the film becomes more than a crime story — it's a layered portrait of community, policing, and the cycles that trap people in impossible choices. Is Clockers one of Spike Lee's most underrated films? And how does it fit into the larger conversation about '90s crime cinema and Black storytelling on screen? Troy and Brad dig into all of it.Clockers is directed by Spike Lee and stars Harvey Keitel, John Turturro, Delroy Lindo, Mikhi Phifer, Isaiah Washington, and Ketih David. Kicking off the post-100-episode era with Episode 101 entitled “Some Pundits,” the first portion of the show is dedicated to the elongated hiatus that began around Christmas. After an injury that Trivelle sustained, he explains what happened and shares lessons learned from people who checked on him. Once reacclimatized and warmed up, the gang acknowledges the new world they find themselves in after six weeks before diving into the big news event of the 2026 Grammys that just passed. While discussing the show in general, they hone in on the Hip Hop and Album of the Year categories (with Kendrick Lamar, Clipse, Tyler, the Creator, and others) and how there's a kind of statistical pattern where early wins can indicate the likelihood of taking home bigger awards later...certain dominoes have to line up for that to happen. Although Trivelle makes some great points, the conversation expands to the Grammy tributes by Lauryn Hill and Justin Bieber's performance, the weight of jury-decided accolades versus sales, the requirements to be considered for awards, notable speeches, criticisms and more, giving the Grammy section a well-rounded discussion. Because two of the three hosts are involved with filmmaking, the conversation shifts to Oscar previews and the math of how certain Grammy wins can foreshadow bigger Oscar victories. They talk about Sinners, which broke the record with 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, and discuss which categories it can win and which it might lose while still having a successful run. They also give flowers to standout performances from Coogler, MBJ, Delroy Lindo, and Wunmi Mosaku. Talk turns to Marty Supreme and the competitive race for Oscar supremacy, then briefly touches on the Michael Jackson biopic and how its billion-plus projection could change, especially after OShauN reveals plans for a second movie and the idea of splitting the story becomes central. As J. Cole's new album The Fall Off is out now, Trivelle brings it up and they discuss expectations before OShauN tells the story of what happened with Cam'ron and Cole and the lawsuit. XP also highlights EverythingOShauN's latest song IMAX (GOOF) playing across Canada during an NBA broadcast to end off the 101st episode.

This week is a lot, so naturally, we unpack all of it. From the alleged RFK Jr. messages that should've stayed private, to the passing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis following an encounter with federal agents that has sparked protests, outrage, and ongoing questions. We break down record deportations affecting Cuban communities in Florida, Trump's threat of massive tariffs on French wine and champagne, and France fast-tracking a social media ban for kids under 15. Amazon is cutting thousands of corporate jobs, TikTok is collecting even more user data, and the U.S. nightlife and alcohol scene is quietly collapsing. We also dig into cold-weather tragedies impacting unhoused New Yorkers, Delroy Lindo being mischaracterized in an interview, anonymous Oscar voters shading Ariana Grande, Brooklyn Beckham calling out his parents, Skai Jackson's baby daddy sentencing, Nicki Minaj vs. Don Lemon, and Cardi B going off over a football pick. Sinners received 16 nominations; a record-breaking nomination count for the most in Academy Awards history. The supernatural thriller received nominations for best picture; director (Ryan Coogler); actor (Michael B. Jordan); supporting actress (Wunmi Mosaku); actor in a supporting role (Delroy Lindo); and original screenplay. Timothée Chalamet is 30 years and 26 days old, Chalamet just became the youngest male actor to receive three Oscar nominations since Marlon Brando, who achieved this feat at age 29 in 1954. Steven Spielberg has broken his own record for the most Oscar nominations as a producer, bringing his total to 14 with the nomination for Best Picture for the film "Hamnet." One Battle After Another received 13 nods, including Best Picture. The Snubs:The Cold Shoulder: The Biggest Snubs of the 2026 Oscar NominationsThe Wicked Witch of the West... Gone? The biggest shocker of the morning has to be the complete erasure of Wicked: For Good. Just last year, the first installment picked up 10 nominations. This year? Zero. Zilch.Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who were both nominated for the first film, were completely shut out of the acting categories. Even the music branch turned its back on the franchise, ignoring the two new songs written specifically for the film. It seems the magic ran out for the sequel.Paul Mescal's Shakespearean TragedyIf you were betting on Paul Mescal picking up a nomination for playing William Shakespeare in Hamnet, you lost money today. While the film itself did well—and his co-star Jessie Buckley secured a nomination—Mescal was noticeably absent from the list. It's a tough break for an actor who has been a darling of the awards circuit lately. The Strange Case of Chase InfinitiHere is a genuine head-scratcher: One Battle After Another is a massive favorite, racking up 13 nominations. Yet, its breakout lead actress, Chase Infiniti, didn't make the cut. Some insiders think her limited screen time (she's in the movie for about 30 minutes) might have hurt her chances, but considering she's the heart of the film, her absence in the Best Actress category is glaring.Guillermo del Toro Gets the "Argo" TreatmentThe Academy clearly loved Netflix's Frankenstein—it scored nine nominations, including Best Picture. But they apparently didn't love Guillermo del Toro quite enough to give him a Best Director nod. The Directors branch is notoriously finicky, and this year, they left the beloved filmmaker off the list.Blockbuster FatigueAvatar: Fire and Ash failed to secure a Best Picture nomination, a category the previous two films sailed into easily. It seems voters might finally be feeling some Pandora fatigue.Star Power Didn't Save ThemBeing an A-lister didn't help anyone this morning.George Clooney & Adam Sandler: Their film Jay Kelly was completely shut out. Usually, a Noah Baumbach movie is catnip for voters, but this one came up empty.Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson: Despite a serious campaign for his dramatic turn in The Smashing Machine, he couldn't crack the lineup.Jennifer Lawrence: She gave a ferocious performance in Die My Love, but the film was likely too gritty and indie for the broader voting body. The show, hosted by Conan O'Brien, airs live on ABC on March 15th. It's our favorite morning of the year! Or one of them, at least. We had a great turnout for our annual Oscar nominations livestream on our YouTube channel. In case you missed it, here it is in podcast form. Ryan Coogler's Southern Gothic vampire musical "Sinners" made history with 16 nominations, including best picture, director and the new category of casting. Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" was second with 13. We woke up bright and early to talk about the nominations that excited us (Delroy Lindo! Amy Madigan!) and the omissions that surprised us (nothing for "Wicked: For Good" or "No Other Choice"). What were your thoughts on today's Oscar nominations? Was your favorite film honored? Let us know, and mark your calendar for Tuesday, March 10 at Noon Pacific, when LA Times awards expert Glenn Whipp will return to help make predictions, category by category. Thanks for being here!
The 2026 Oscar nominations have been announced, and 'Sinners' dominated the day, earning a historic 16 nominations, breaking the previous record of 14 held by 'La La Land,' 'Titanic' and 'All About Eve.' Along the way, the movie scored a surprise nod for supporting actor Delroy Lindo, but star Chase Infiniti was snubbed in the lead actress category. Awardist host Gerrad Hall, EW Sr. Writer Joey Nolfi, and Sr. Editor Joyce Eng break down all of the snubs and surprises (also including 'Wicked: For Good' and stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who were completely shut out), as well as analysis on what the 16 nominations could mean for Sinners' chance to win Best Picture. This week on Voice of The People DMV, the conversation moves effortlessly from the court to the culture, blending sports, entertainment, music, and real-life perspective the way only this platform can. The episode kicks off with sports, leadership, and legacy, breaking down AJ Dybansta's rise as a potential future #1 NBA Draft pick, the Knicks' NBA Cup Final victory, and Marshall Faulk's vision as he builds his coaching staff at Southern University. The hosts also dive into Sherrone Moore's defining leadership moment, unpacking the pressure, accountability, and expectations that come with coaching at the highest level. From there, the mic shifts to film, TV, and Hollywood culture, calling out Delroy Lindo's Golden Globe snub as another example of Hollywood missing the mark, recapping the Bel-Air season finale, and debating whether the upcoming Street Fighter reboot signals a turning point for video game movies. The heart of the episode lives in hip hop and industry talk, where bold opinions meet cultural memory. Is The Game really the best rapper on the West Coast? Why did the 2000s rap era feel so distinct and personal? Is the 50 Cent vs. Jim Jones beef still fun or just tired? The crew also unpacks 21 Savage's “F the streets” comment, Wale's ongoing Kai Cenat discourse, and rounds it out by naming the greatest songs and albums of the year. Things get deeper with mental health, relationships, and real life, as Kai Cenat opens up about the pressures of fame and internet expectations, followed by a candid conversation about Young Thug's proposal to Mariah The Scientist and how love, timing, and public perception intersect. To close, the show lightens up with “For the Girls (and the Grown): Beauty Staples Edition,” sharing must-have lip combos, go-to fragrances, and skincare essentials before jumping into fun, rotating debate topics that keep the energy high and the conversation honest. It's a full-spectrum episode — thoughtful, entertaining, opinionated, and unapologetically real — reminding listeners why Voice of The People DMV stays locked into the pulse of culture.
Merry Christmas, everyone! Preston A Whitmore II's This Christmas may not be a super popular holiday movie, but Michael thinks it's underrated and under-discussed, so he's invited William Bruce West and David May to watch and talk about it. The movie stars Loretta Devine, Delroy Lindo, Idris Elba, Regina King, Keith D Robinson, Mekhi Phifer, and others as members of a family coming together for the holidays after a few years apart and everyone has secrets. Shhh!
