Dare to say his name five times in the mirror? Bernard Rose's 1992 horror classic Candyman continues to haunt our nightmares with its perfect blend of urban legend, racial commentary, and genuine terror. We journey through the decaying hallways of Chicago's notorious Cabrini-Green housing project alongside Virginia Madsen's Helen, a graduate student whose research into urban legends leads her to the horrifying truth behind the hook-handed killer. As we dissect this influential film that scored 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, we explore how the tragic origin story of Daniel Robitaille transforms what could have been a standard slasher into a haunting meditation on America's racial history and the power of belief. From the unforgettable performance of Tony Todd (who earned $1,000 for each of his 23 bee stings during filming!) to Philip Glass's ethereal score and those disturbingly realistic practical effects, we examine why Candyman remains so effective three decades later. The infamous bathroom scene still makes our skin crawl, while the film's social commentary feels more relevant than ever.Whether you're a longtime fan who can't look in mirrors without anxiety or a curious newcomer wondering if this classic holds up against modern horror, our deep dive reveals why Candyman transcended its slasher roots to become a genuine horror milestone. The hook-handed killer's legacy extends far beyond its three sequels, influencing everything from Jordan Peele's 2021 sequel to how we understand the intersection of horror and social issues.Follow us on Instagram @ScreamStreamPod and visit ScreamsAndStreams.com for more horror film discussions that will keep you up at night. Life is full of sweet highs and terrible merlots on today's Script Apart as Alexander Payne – director of movies like Election, The Holdovers, Nebraska and About Schmidt – joins us to raise a glass to an indie drama that has aged like a fine wine. The brilliant Sideways was released in 2004 and soon earned four Academy Award nominations, taking home Best Adapted Screenplay. It won six Independent Spirit Awards, was picked up for Japanese remake and instigated a huge tourism boom in the California wine country that forms the film's backdrop. Co-written with frequent collaborator Jim Taylor, it told the tale of two friends on a wine tasting expedition, each struggling to break out of a certain middle-aged, middle-class male malaise (one of Alexander's screenwriting specialties). The result? A dramedy widely regarded as one of the best of its decade. The film saw Paul Giamatti play Miles – an aspiring author whose dreams of literary stardom are misfiring, much like his love life. Recently divorced, he and his old college friend Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, hop in the car to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. But Jack – a washed-up soap opera actor – is intent on hooking up with women as part of one last sexual hurrah before marriage. Caught up in the mix as the pair quarrel and cause trouble is Virginia Madsen's Maya, a barmaid that Miles strikes up feelings for. Professing those feelings in a serious way, though, is difficult for the wine aficionado and English teacher – a man so mired in regret about what was, he's unable to grasp the now and what could still be. Much is often made about the recurring quote-unquote “losers” that lead Alexander's films, and what they might have to say about modern American man. The filmmaker, though, has always been pretty resolute that his movies centre the downtrodden and dopey simply because, deep down, these films are comedies – a genre the historically sides with the little guy, going all the way back to Charlie Chaplin. But how does he define the mix of pathos and hilarity that fill his characters? Where does Alexander's affinity towards road trip stories come from? What's so relatable and real about Miles' fear that his literary dreams might amount to nothing – and that a life of feeling like a loser awaits? And what was the inspiration behind the film's beautiful ending – a knock at the door that we as an audience never see answered? All is revealed across a fascinating thirty-minute sit down with the auteuer.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Tune in as the program keeps the holiday season rolling onward for the second week of December! This time around, filmmaker friend Robyn Zabukovec (https://twitter.com/thefinalgirly?s=21) hops back into her guest seat for a breakdown of Better Watch Out, the 2016 Christmas horror-comedy that follows a 17-year-old babysitter and a couple adolescent boys as they try to fend off a home invasion during Christmastime. An arachnophobic actor summoning up the guts to work with real huntsman spiders on set, a PSA against drunk driving, and a thematic correlation that this movie may share with Adventure Time comprise some of the talking points for this episode. Directed by Chris Peckover, Better Watch Out stars Olivia DeJonge, Levi Miller, Ed Oxenbould, Aleks Mikic, Dacre Montgomery, Virginia Madsen, and Patrick Warburton. We're toasting the twentieth anniversary of a film about wine, friendship, and love among the vineyards of the Santa Ynez Valley, California. Directed by Alexander Payne and based on the novel by Rex Pickett, this 2004 hangout/road comedy from Fox Searchlight became a critic's darling, sweeping the “Big Four” critics' awards and winning the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA, WGA, and Critic's Choice awards for Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor. The movie also marked breakthrough performances for its entire lead cast: Paul Giamatti, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen, and Sandra Oh. The corky, uh, quirky comedy even affected wine sales, causing a spike in pinot noir sales and a dip in merlot sales. But will praise of this film die on the vine with our three hosts, or will we find that it goes down easy despite its vintage? Join us as we give you the straight story on Sideways! Say their name multiple times. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss Candyman (1992) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024), as well as Beetlejuice (1988). We start by sharing our experiences and reactions to watching Candyman, including the key imagery and ideas that stand out. We praise the score from Phillip Glass, the writing work of Clive Barker, the direction and vision from Bernard Rose, and the commendable acting work and charisma of Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd. We then discuss Beetlejuice (1988), with Sarah watching it for the first time for this episode, which then moves into our reactions and experiences to watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). We talk about the connections between the two films and how we seem to connect films in more surprising ways than we initially realise. We discuss the wider state of "Legacy-quels" and the repeated trope of the grown-up lead as a sad parent. We talk about the urban and suburban exploration in both films and how it mines the fears of modern-day audiences.

The Movie Madness Podcast is celebrating its 500th episode with a conversation 20 years in the making. Erik Childress has had many conversations with his guest over the years, but this one is a look back at where Nick Digilio and him were in their lives in 2004 when they, respectively, named Sideways and Garden State as their favorite films of that year. They talk about why those films were so personal to them, almost exactly ten years apart in their respective ages, at the time and if revisiting them two decades later is the same experience. The conversation veers into personal struggles, “manic pixie dream girls”, lost opportunities and soundtracks.

https://open.spotify.com/show/2BsfYRiIzhDgs6EBByeUuL?si=c7f306c63a1d467a Dune is a 1984 American epic space opera film written and directed by David Lynch and based on the 1965 Frank Herbert novel Dune. It was filmed at the Churubusco Studios in Mexico City. The soundtrack was composed by the rock band Toto, with a contribution from Brian Eno. Its large ensemble cast includes Kyle MacLachlan's film debut as young nobleman Paul Atreides, Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif, Dean Stockwell, Virginia Madsen, José Ferrer, Sean Young, Sting, Linda Hunt, and Max von Sydow. The setting is the distant future, chronicling the conflict between rival noble families as they battle for control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. The planet is the only source of the drug melange (spice), which allows prescience and is vital to space travel, making it the most essential and valuable commodity in the universe. Paul Atreides is the scion and heir of a powerful noble family, whose inheritance of control over Arrakis brings them into conflict with its former overlords, House Harkonnen. Paul is also possibly the Kwisatz Haderach, a messianic figure expected by the Bene Gesserit sisterhood. After the novel's initial success, attempts to adapt Dune as a film began in 1971. A lengthy process of development followed throughout the 1970s, during which Arthur P. Jacobs, Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Ridley Scott unsuccessfully tried to bring their visions to the screen. In 1981, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis hired Lynch as director. The film underperformed at the box office, grossing $30.9 million from a $40–42 million budget. At least four versions have been released worldwide. Lynch largely disowned the finished film and had his name removed or changed to pseudonyms. The film has developed a cult following,[4][5] but opinion varies between fans of the novel and fans of Lynch's films.[6] Wikipedia Prepare for a wild excursion into the heart of Belizean jungles and the ruins of Laminai as we recount an adventure that's part comedy, part thriller, and all real-life in this episode of Sounds Awesome Patreon.

Cade and Diane discuss two films starring Paul Giamatti and directed by Alexander Payne: Sideways (2004) and The Holdovers (2023). Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Two hosts. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Sideways is a 2004 American comedy-drama road film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Jim Taylor and Payne. A film adaptation of Rex Pickett's 2004 novel of the same name, Sideways follows two men in their forties, Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti), a depressed teacher and unsuccessful writer, and Jack Cole (Thomas Haden Church), a past-his-prime actor, who take a week-long road trip to Santa Barbara County wine country to celebrate Jack's upcoming wedding. Sandra Oh and Virginia Madsen also star as women they encounter during their trip. The Holdovers is a 2023 American comedy-drama film directed by Alexander Payne, written by David Hemingson, and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa. Set in 1970, it follows a curmudgeonly history teacher at a New England boarding school who is forced to chaperone the handful of students with nowhere to go over Christmas break.
Grad student Helen Lyle is determined to find out why the residents of the Cabrini-Green housing development in Chicago are petrified by the Candyman, a ghost who allegedly appears if you say his name in the mirror five times. After jokingly summoning him with Trevor, her philandering professor husband, Helen heads to Cabrini-Green with her pal Bernadette to interview residents and track down the truth. Instead she discovers what might just be the Candyman's lair, an abandoned apartment laid out strangely like her own. Soon enough, she's standing face to face with the man himself. And he hasn't brought a bag of Skittles. This guy's got a hook for a hand, bees on his knees, and a desire to possess Helen, who may or may not resemble the woman he once loved. After her encounter with the Man, Helen awakes to find herself on the floor of an bathroom covered in blood, her crazy nightmare just beginning. One of the most noteworthy slashers of its period, Candyman centers upon a Chicago semiotics student (Virginia Madsen) who blunders into the wrath of a supernatural folklore spirit (Tony Todd). Based on a Clive Barker short story that uses ghosts to symbolize income inequality in Liverpool, writer/director Bernard Rose moved the setting to Chicago and gave the narrative a subtext that comments on American racism. Ryan is joined by Rachel for a lengthy discussion about this atmospheric, moody, and complicated film. While citing a handful of the extensive academic commentary done on Candyman, Ryan and Rachel remark upon how Candyman was made, the contemporary reactions to the film, and how its storytelling reflects America's relationship with urban decay, affordable housing, policing, superstition, symbolism, segregation, stereotype, and the white savior trope. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ryan-valentine3/support

Candyman is a 1992 American gothic supernatural horror film, written and directed by Bernard Rose and starring Virginia Madsen, Tony Todd, Xander Berkeley, Kasi Lemmons, and Vanessa E. Williams. Based on Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden", the film follows a Chicago graduate student completing a thesis on urban legends and folklore, which leads her to the legend of the "Candyman", the ghost of an African-American artist and the son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century for his relationship with the daughter of a wealthy white man. Skeptical graduate student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) befriends Anne-Marie McCoy (Vanessa Williams) while researching superstitions in a housing project on Chicago's Near North Side. From Anne-Marie, Helen learns about the Candyman (Tony Todd), a knife-wielding figure of urban legend that some of her neighbors believe to be responsible for a recent murder. After a mysterious man matching the Candyman's description begins stalking her, Helen comes to fear that the legend may be all too real. If you say Spooky Season 5 times in a mirror, nothing happens, but you might just hear the feint voices of Max and Spencer discussing a classic horror movie. That also might be because you left this episode playing on your phone. Either way, they discuss Max's first time watching the slasher classic from the minds of Bernard Rose and Clive Barker, and the iconic performances of Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen. They discuss the social and racial commentary it makes (both positively and negatively), get into what the white savior trope means, and discuss all the gruesome details of what makes this movie stand out amongst the rest.

Escape with us to the Santa Ynez Valley for a lovely little romp in the vineyards. Based on Rex Picket's first novel in his Sideways Trilogy, and directed by Alexander Payne, this little ruby of a film brought accolades for a wonderful ensemble cast featuring Paul Giammati, Virginia Madsen, Thomas Haden Church, and Sandra Oh. In 2004, it was the little film that drew audiences in and received multiple awards noms and nods winning Best Picture at Golden Globes, and a Best Screenplay Oscar. Set in the towns of Solveng and Buellton, Payne textures the wine scene with quirkiness, silliness, and snark, but this is also a delightful film about friendship, life transitions, and love reaching its fullest potential, like fine wine. We are very fortunate to have as our guest co-host, our dear friend and resident wine expert Mr. Bill. Think of this episode as a “twofer” — a film discussion with a bonus FREE wine class. Deepers Creepers was started in November 2022, November is the 11th month, 11 is just 1 and 1. 22+1=23. BOOM!! 23 is everything…. Just kidding this movie is full of people who need years and years of therapy and 23 is just a number. But it is, as the movie says, a number that is good at making people go a little mad. What the hell was Virginia Madsen thinking in this movie? And why is all the math so overly confusing. Pink is 23 but so is Red? As baffling and hilariously bad as it is, The Number 23 is actually a pretty fun watch and Jim Carey's emo boy look really works for us. https://twitter.com/deeperscreepers https://instagram.com/deeperscreepers?igshid=NTdlMDg3MTY= https://www.tiktok.com/@deeperscreeperspodemail: deeperscreeperspod@gmail.com Get the full RSS feed here: https://media.rss.com/deeperscreeperspod/feed.xml artwork done by Yuzumaki Ketsueki, instagram.com/yuzumaki_ https://instagram.com/yuzumaki__?igshid=NTdlMDg3MTY=All music and videos are owned by the respective artist and production companies. Sure, building a rocket to space in your barn is kind of dumb, but Thorton, along with his wife (played by Virginia Madsen) and family make it a dumb idea that you root for.
