Well, here it is, the 2024 Retrospective, where we each give our Top 5 Favorite and Top 5 Worst genre films of the year that was 2024.  We also have quite a few honorable mentions and runners up this year. This is always a blast for us. When all was said and done all three of us were in general agreement with a great many others that 2024 was a great year for the horror genre particularly.  For fun, here were each of our Top 5 Favorite and Worst genre films the previous year, 2023: (as a reminder all three of us loved Godzilla Minus One, but only Jorge counted it in his Top 5 as a specific horror genre film) Jacob: Five Favorite: #1-When Evil Lurks, #2-Talk to Me, #3-Thanksgiving, #4-Infinity Pool, #5- Saw X Five Worst: #1-Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, #2-The Exorcist: Believer, #3-Children of the Corn (2023), #4-Cocaine Shark, #5-Beaten to Death Jorge: Five Favorite: #1-Godzilla Minus One, #2-When Evil Lurks, #3-Talk to Me, #4-Infinity Pool, #5-Project Wolf Hunting (stateside release 2023 nerds) Five Worst: #1-The Exorcist: Believer, #2-M3GAN "M threegan dude come on", #3-Knock at the Cabin, #4-The Mill, #5-The Pope's Exorcist (this dude didn't watch any movies) Rhett: Five Favorite: #1-When Evil Lurks, #2-Talk to Me, #3-Infinity Pool, #4-Thanksgiving, #5-Birth/Rebirth Five Worst: #1-The Exorcist: Believer, #2-Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, #3-Children of the Corn (2023), #4-Insidious: The Red Door, #5-Knock at the Cabin Runners Up for Worst (there's always so many): Pet Sematary Bloodlines, The Meg 2, The Nun 2, The Haunted Mansion, The Outwaters Runners Up for Favorite: all of us loved Godzilla Minus One but Jacob and Rhett excluded it from Top 5 horror, Beau is Afraid and Poor Things (both "horror adjacent"), Big Shark, Saw X (for Rhett and Jorge, #5 for Jacob), Huesera The Bone Woman, Project Wolf Hunting (for Jacob and Rhett, #5 fave for Jorge), muthafuckin Slotherhouse Join our Patreon to support the show! This week Derry Public Radio revisits the world of "Pet Sematary" with a dive into the recent adaptation, "Pet Sematary: Bloodlines". Join CM, Josh, and Eve as they dissect this prequel to the 2019 remake. Listen in as they explore the film's attempt to expand on Jud Crandall's backstory, the missed opportunities in storytelling, the strange motivations behind the characters, and the film's struggle to capture the essence of King's work. They also discuss the film's lack of emotional depth compared to the original source material and its failure to deliver on the promise of a compelling prequel. Amidst the critique, the hosts share their own creative pitches for stories within the "Pet Sematary" universe. Our dad is keeping us out of Vietnam for Episode 169, "Micmac Paddy Whack". There's singing, rage-induced laughter, a long personal story with only the thinnest connection to the topic, and plenty of other nonsense. So, it's an episode of Dread Media. Are you ready for another round of Pet Sematary? Stephen King films have been very hit and miss, and this project is probably no different. You're either going to love it, or you're going to hate it, I don't think there is an in between. "In 1969, a young Jud Crandall dreams of leaving his hometown of Ludlow, Maine behind, but soon discovers sinister secrets buried within. Jud is forced to confront a dark family history that will forever keep him connected to Ludlow." One of us was half a fan, and the other didn't really seem to like it all that much. It has some really cool scenes, but also some things that don't make much sense. As always, you should definitely go watch it in order to decide for yourself. With most of these Stephen King projects, it's pretty polarizing. It might be time to give these films to established creators, so that we know they're in good hands. Lindsey Anderson Beer's 2023 prequel to the 2019 reboot of Pet Sematary got something of a kicking by most critics on its release. There are the bones of a good film in their somewhere though, and the look and the soundtrack of the film, plus an eclectic cast, make it an interesting curio if nothing else. Joining me to discuss it is N.P. Cunniffe, the author of the new folk horror/Gothic novella The Wee Gee Man. It's a great, classically spooky story with an interesting format and some chilling twists. Plus, the book itself is a beautiful artifact, with a cover design by the author himself. I urge you to pick up a copy here, before the Wee Gee Man comes looking for you.... Thanks to Stephen L Parkes for tech, as always. Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. The story is based on an untold chapter of Stephen King's self-proclaimed, scariest property of all time. Up next, she will helm Paramount's Sleepy Hollow reboot as the writer, director, and producer. She also has several projects in various phases of development and production, including Disney's live action remake of Bambi, New Line's Hello Kitty, and Universal's Fast and Furious spinoff, which she wrote with Geneva Robertson-Dworet. Under her production banner Lab Brew, Lord of the Flies will be directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by Patrick Ness for Warner Bros."For me, I don't start a project unless I have a really clear understanding of who the main characters are and why this is a journey that's necessary for them to take. And why are these both the best and the worst people to be in this series? That's the question I ask myself all the time because you need to know: What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? What are the dramatic tension points going to be where these specific people can really succeed or really fail in this scenario?I love people who are passionate, and Quentin Tarantino is just so passionate. And I've never been in a writer's room or even really in any kind of development experience where a director was just so passionate and so full of kind of energetic ideas. And that was really inspiring. Somebody who just completely knows their own point of view and gets excited by their own ideas is just fun to watch.I was about to shoot Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I was finishing up my work on Star Trek 4, which I had to leave to do Pet Sematary, so I had been working with J. J. Abrams closely for a while on the script, and so I just asked if he had any advice, in terms of just practical stuff on set. And I mean, I've been on so many sets, but still, he's a director who's done so many projects. So he did give me some great advice just about, you know, making it through such long days and taking time for yourself and just kind of keeping your sanity that was kind of the focus of the advice. And he was just very generous and sweet about that.”www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast

Another hat-trick of directors on this week's beautifully-designed, utterly symmetrical Empire Podcast, folks. First, Ben Travis says what a marvellous day for a chat with David Gordon Green, director of The Exorcist: Believer. Then, Beth Webb (yes, actual Beth Webb, back on the podcast!) chats with Chloe Domont, the writer/director of the savage relationship drama, Fair Play. And then John Nugent travels to Venice to have a chat with the one and only Wes Anderson — who was wearing pyjamas monogrammed with his own initials — about his Roald Dahl short films, currently streaming on Netflix. John didn't have any pod equipment with him, which is why his audio is slightly spotty in this one. Then, back in the virtual podbooth, Chris Hewitt hosts and is joined by Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and Amon Warmann for a fun episode in which they review The Exorcist: Believer, Fair Play, The Great Escaper and Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, come to grips with an almost total absence of movie news, and answer a listener question (well, more of a challenge, really) that leaves Amon, Helen and James in particular shaken AND stirred.
