“The rescue services need to know that the vehicle is safe to approach… with this app, we have a 3D view of each truck and this augmented reality view.”With many governments making commitments toward zero-emission targets, more and more of the trucks on our roads are becoming electric. Whilst good news for the environment, it can present challenges for emergency responders, who may not be familiar with how these types of trucks are built. In the event of an accident, emergency services need to be able to access vehicles safely, and potentially, rescue people trapped inside. This means knowing things like where the battery is, where high-voltage cables are or which parts of the truck can be safely cut through. Volvo Group is the market leader in the manufacture of electric trucks in Europe, and as has been the case for decades, they're improving safety through clever innovation. They've developed an app for use at the scene of an emergency which guides those on the scene around the important components of the truck using 3D images as well as augmented reality. This means that first responders simply need to type the licence plate of the truck into the app and look at it through their device, and they can see information about the important components and potential hazards overlaid on the image. Our producer Lasse Edfast travelled to Volvo Group's HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden to meet Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director, and Vincent Barnoux, AR Expert & Business Solution Engineer at Volvo. They demonstrate the app for us on one of their trucks and talk about the benefits of using this kind of technology to safely guide users around electric vehicles.  Find out more about Volvo here.Find out more about Vuforia here.Your host is Paul Haimes from industrial software company PTC.Episodes are released bi-weekly. Jay Wright is the founder and CEO of Campfire 3D, a company that is focused on holographic collaboration for design and engineering workflows. Prior to Campfire, Jay spent 10 years building Vuforia from inception to becoming the leading augmented reality platform for developing handheld and headworn applications. Vuforia is currently part of enterprise software and services company, PTC, but Jay originally created Vuforia while at Qualcomm. There he was responsible for global commercialization of non-radio technologies, ranging from computer vision to neuromorphic hardware.Previously, Jay had created two software companies focused on the cutting edge of mobile computing, dating back to the mid 1990s. On the whole, he has been a technology entrepreneur building his vision for future computing platforms for more than 25 years. In this conversation, Jay shares stories from early days of mobile software, starting with his work on Apple's Newton and his subsequent efforts to create the first App Store. We discuss the impetus for building Vuforia at Qualcomm, the lessons he learned about the AR market from that experience, and how that led to Campfire 3D.We get into the problem he's trying to solve with Campfire, and the specific strategy he's pursuing. We go on to discuss his perspective on the AR hardware efforts at Facebook and Apple, and the historical clues about how quickly we can expect general purpose consumer smartglasses to arrive.Jay shares a lot of wisdom about entrepreneurship and AR.It's worth noting when we recorded this interview, Facebook was still named Facebook, and Meta referred to an early entrant building productivity-focused headworn AR. They shut down a few years back. You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.

So today I decided to turn a sketch on paper into an interactive art piece using Unity, Augmented Reality, and Vuforia. The goal was to see how awesome I can make a simple drawing and push the idea of combining technology and art as far as I could take it. At the end of this little journey, I ended up with a sketch of a character named Cubey, an AR app for my Android phone, and a pretty cool experience to play with. With all sorts of amazing future tech demos, PTC’s Executive VP of AR Products Mike Campbell understands how businesses might want to implement the most far-out features of XR technology right away. But he says there’s plenty AR can do perfectly right now that more industries should take advantage of. Alan: You’re listening to the XR for Business Podcast with your host, Alan Smithson. Today’s episode is with Mike Campbell, executive vice president of Augmented Reality Products at PTC. Mike leads the Vuforia product team, and is responsible for driving the product and technology strategy of PTC’s leading solutions for the development of augmented reality applications. You can learn more about the work they’re doing at ptc.com. Mike, welcome to the show. Mike: Hey, Alan, it’s great to be here. Thanks for having me. Alan: It’s my absolute pleasure. I’ve been really, really looking forward to this, because I went to LiveWorx in… was it June? Mike: June, yep. Alan: My God. I had no idea, first of all, how big PTC was and how important Vuforia and your augmented reality strategy is going to be and is becoming to all sorts of different industries. I got to fix a tractor. I got to work on an ATV. I got to look in retail. Is there any industries that this won’t affect? Mike: Well, PTC’s focus is really in the industrial enterprise domain. And I would say across all of the verticals there — heavy equipment, automotive, aerospace, medical devices — I mean, all of those places are ripe for transformation, thanks to the power of augmented reality. Alan: It’s amazing. You even had a boat there. Mike: We did, we did, yeah. One of our customers is Beneteau. Alan: Yeah. So let’s start from the beginning here. What is PTC? What do you guys do? Where did it come from? Let’s start there. Mike: Ok. So PTC is a billion-dollar plus software company headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. We have been around for a long time and we got our start back in the late 80s, early 90s by revolutionizing the 3D solid modeling industry. Basically, we invented a better mousetrap that allowed companies to create products virtually in 3D much faster and more effectively than ever before. Fast forward from then, we not only have a 3D solid modeling CAD offering, we have a great offering used in engineering for lifecycle management. And about 10 years ago, we recognized the trend of the Internet of Things, this explosion of connectivity and ubiquity of sensors, and companies wanting to leverage that information so that they could create products and manufacture products and service products better. We invested pretty heavily at that time. And once we did that, we were thinking a lot about this idea of IOT and products broadcasting information about themselves in the form of digital data. And we were thinking about our 3D heritage and we recognized that augmented reality was a great way to unlock some of that digital data in the context of the physical world, where you do your work. And that’s really what got us into AR. I have been at PTC — as you said — for a long, long time. And I’ve been involved in our AR journey since the beginning and it’s been a fantastic ride. Alan: Vuforia was an acquisition. Was that something that you guys made a decision to– can we build this in-house, or should we just acquire it? How did that come about? Mike: So we were th
