Or is it a device that we all hold in our hands that can cost just a few hundred dollars. A device that there are literally five billion of on this planet? AR platform Blippar is betting on the latter while not ignoring the former, and in this TechFirst we chat with the CEO Faisal Galaria about exactly why. Today's guest is naturally hyper curious - as a technology entrepreneur, angel investor and business advisor, Jess Butcher MBE has many strings to her bow. As the co-founder and CMO of Blippar from 2011-2015, Jess was at the helm during its ascent to become one of the global tech pioneers in the field of Augmented Reality. Today, as one of the four recently appointed equality and human rights commissioners in the UK, Jess focuses her time and energy mentoring the next generation of entrepreneurs, and public speaking and writing about subjects she's incredibly passionate about, such as women in tech, work-life balance, and polarisation within our culture and society. “The most successful entrepreneurs aren't motivated by money per se, but by impact and the scale of the impact that they can have. And that typically correlates with huge success and huge wealth.”In this episode of Hyper Curious, we discuss the dilemma that all entrepreneurs have to balance our drive for business impact, versus personal matters, why we women should stop apologising for our decisions, and the need for nuanced conversations in our highly polarised world.“It's incredibly simplistic and binary, how we talk about women in the workplace. And much of the broader narrative around feminism is very, very binary.”From building a big beautiful scrappy portfolio career, to co-founding Blippar, finding co-founders, to the self awareness needed to change roles within the organisation, and debunking unconscious gender bias:“The best way to challenge stereotypes is simply to live beyond them and demonstrate you're doing that - you are not that stereotype and bollocks to it, quite frankly.”On today's podcast: The superpower of a scrappy CV The Blippar journey Finding co-founders Why the broader narrative around feminism is binary Debunking unconscious bias Links: Twitter:  jessbutcher Instagram: jessbutchermbe LinkedIn: Jess Butcher Book - The Coddling of the American Mind Book - The Power Of Bad by John Tierney

And Layar, he was the worldwide head of customer development; Layar sold to Blippar back in the day. And I want to invite Matt to the show. Thank you so much for joining me on the show. Matt: Thanks for having me. Alan: Thanks Matt. This is really an honor to meet you, and you have so much experience in this industry that we can all learn from. You’ve been doing this, it seems like, since the beginning. So why don’t we start with what you’ve seen as the progression of augmented reality over the last decade that you’ve been involved? Matt: Using words like “decade” brings it home. I mean, I got into AR from working for the company called Openwave that invented the mobile phone browser, and seeing that phones were being connected to the Internet, and started to think about what was next. And realized that interfaces were getting more natural, and we were going to end up connecting our senses to the Internet. You can connect a sense of sight — our dominant sense — that was going to be a really big deal. And I learned that was called augmented reality; that ability to sort of blend digital information and the real world into what you see. I kind of jumped in expecting it to be happening pretty soon. And at the time, there was nobody. At the first AWE conference back then, I think there was 300 people in total. And that was the entire professional AR industry. That included a bunch of researchers, a bunch of, like, science fiction authors, just a bunch of weirdos and a handful of people with some sort of commercial expertise. I think the interesting thing is that, even back then, the use cases and the kind of interactions and those sorts ideas around, these are the things that AR is going to be good for in the earliest days is still the same ones. It wasn’t like anything’s changed; they’ve stayed the same. What’s gotten better is the user experience around those use cases. The technology is improved. There’s like 100x or 50x more processing capacity in our hands. The algorithms have gotten better. And the same use cases that we knew were good ideas back then are now like, oh, these are starting to work now. Enterprises and consumers are starting to get some value out of it. Alan: So let me interject quickly, for the people listening who are not familiar with this industry: what are these use cases? What are the use cases that have stood the test of time? Personal branding Mike received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) with recognition from Her Majesty The Queen for his contribution to the UK digital economy. Personal branding was synonymous with success! In his business life Mike was CEO of Telecity, a company he helped successfully from a market cap of 6 Million to well over 3 Billion. Growing the company was quite a journey, with several acquisitions along the way. Mike tells me about his personal brand and how it helped him along the way and how it is more longer lived than a business brand. He now spreads his time between 14 different non executive roles in South Africa, USA, Moscow, Hong Kong, Spain,Belgium, Amsterdam and his homeland the United Kingdom. Mike also enjoys charity work and is passionate about the education and empowerment of children in particular. He ran 40 Marathons in 40 days for the Prince’s trust 4oth anniversary. He also sleeps in the street once a year to support action for children, an initiative to get children off the streets. When he was a CEO he wrote a book called “Forget Strategy Get Results” as a public company CEO the shareholders loved the book of course! He has his second book coming along in the next few months. Mike Shares His Personal Branding Strategies In terms of personal branding helping him in his career, it was incredible for him personally and synonymous with the businesses success. He had a caricature of himself on a business card and through an app called Blippar his character would pop up and start talking to you through your phone. It had an image of him with his shirt open three buttons down, he still wears the same necklace today. Another one of his business cards had Mike on it and if you needed any more information he probably didn’t want to speak to you anyway! When presenting the results for the company people would ask if his shirt buttons were done up or open and not even attend the briefing. He would leave the three buttons undone if the results were good and only one was open if they were not as good. Personal Branding is All About Personality We agreed personal branding is about personality and how that plays into the businesses he is involved with is crucial. You are always selling yourself first, personal branding is so important because you can be selling anything or doing anything at work and you are still always selling yourself; it is about building confidence and trust and creating the sense of trust between you and someone else. When Mike learnt how to sell the gentleman that taught him explained that every unsuccessful attempt only gets you one step closer to success. When you are a vacuum cleaner salesperson statistically you know that not all the houses in the street will buy, and the likelihood of success is low. When you knock on that door you should be happy as you are one step closer to selling the vacuum cleaner. If you get on a bicycle you will fall off, if you gave up the first time you tried you would never manage it and if you bought all the books in the world to help you to ride a bicycle you would still fall off when you first got on! Failure is almost part of success and you should embrace it as it is part of the journey. Finding Work/Life Balance Mike’s new book is called “Live, Love, Work,Prosper” we agreed the work life balance doesn’t exist, it is difficult to achieve harmony. Nelson Mandella is a great inspiration to Mike but his home life was a disaster and trying to be focused on your career and having a home life and a business life you need to integrate them somehow otherwise one element suffers. Mike puts his mobile on the table every time he goes to dinner and some people think this is rude, but he has businesses in every timezone in the world and if his phone is on the table at least he can see it when it rings. He thinks this is better than putting the phone in the briefcase as it wastes brain cycles th...

“You could say I’m the father of AR marketing” this (tongue in cheek) quote comes from Jerry Daykin Head of Digital Media Partnerships at Diageo. Jerry works at a brand, he talks about innovation AND gets innovation projects live - how often does that happen? He did the first Shazamable ad in the UK and the ran first brand campaign on Blippar. And he’s not just a new platform junkie, his marketing knowledge is wide and deep. If you follow #digitalsense you will find a global marketing conversation that centres around him. Jerry’s shiny new object is Augmented Reality because “if AR becomes the OS of the future - Facebook becomes obsolete.” This is punchy stuff from a man who knows his onions. And he doesn’t stop there as he tells us “there’s a battle going on to be the AR operating system.” It was a rare treat to get Jerry’s undivided attention for an hour and there’s a lot to learn in this interview especially why he gets asked if he “feels feel morally responsible for the state of social.” #TV #twitter #data #tech #google #marketing #advertising #AI #artificial #intelligence #brands #privacy #future #futurism #comms #agency #agencies #creative #creativity #futuring #strategy #blockchain #mobile #user #experience #Facebook #worktech #voice
