Edouard is the CEO of Stellantis Insurance, having spent his career building new ways to solving insurance-related needs globally. He is responsibile for creating insurance solutions to support Stellantis' growth objectives in their automotive business, where insurance can enable or hinder those aspirations. He formerly worked at Volvo and Stellantis' predecessor, PSA. He joins the show as he winds down his time leading Stellantis' efforts in Insurance, and on the back of a major announcement with Bolt on embedding auto insurance in the US market. We met over a year ago when we were part of research Capgemini was doing on the future of Mobility and its impact on insurance as part of their World Insurance Report in 2023, which Lars Boeing joined the show to discuss. I shared my work on the Future of Auto Insurance with Edouard, and was excited to bring him on the show to discuss his take on the question given his rich background in the space and being a key driver in where things are heading. Highlights from the Show Edouard began his insurance career while still in school, doing his master's dissertation on new entrants into insurance That lead to a roll at Volvo Group to setup an insurance business, which then lead to a roll with PSA (now Stellantis) to build their insurance business Why would car companies (OEMs) get into insurance? Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) - if insurance for a given car model is too expensive, people won't buy your car, so OEMs want to work to control insurance cost as part of TCO Diversification of Revenues - important in any business, and if you run it right, there's attractive margin in insurance Opportunity - insurance is a way to demonstrate to consumers that you care, and the perception of most insurers is that they're against you rather than trying to pay your claims, so OEMs are well positioned to be the solution to that issue But can OEMs succeed? They're very well positioned with existing assets – brand name with high loyalty and affinity, logistics and supply chains, key purchasing moments, repair and distribution networks, deep understanding of the physical product being insured, etc. They have the assets and resources, but the remaining challenge is execution There's also a question of whether the OEM has to be the insurer, or simply partner with insurance providers and capacity This depends on risk appetite, which is trickier in insurance since you don't know the cost of product until after it is sold Stellantis has looked at multiple models, from building their own insurer to partnering with insurers to working with platforms like Bolttech in each of their global markets to meet local needs Partnership matters because, even if you have your own insurer, you cannot and do not want to take every risk that comes in Car dealers still need to make the sale, so they need solutions beyond an OEM's insurer to be sure they don't get forced to say "No" to a customer who needs coverage We discussed whether OEM's push into subscription services means insurance mustbe part of the equation, but there are local regulations that need to be navigated that may not allow this, so Stellantis must have options for customers that could include an embedded insurance offering but has to include other paths The technology we have to enable new pathways for OEMs to sell insurance are completely different than ever before It's important for insurers to create far more technical capabilities to partner with OEMs as most insurers currently are not flexible enough for most OEM needs You can get the report at future-of-insurance.com/capgemini2023 Download The Future of Auto Insurance: Connected, Embedded, Subscribed for free today This episode is brought to you by The Future of Auto Insurance: Connected, Embedded, Subscribed, which you can download for free today, thanks to support from Guidewire. To shed light on these dilemmas, we invite you to join our conversation with Curtis Lee, a seasoned startup founder, currently serving as the VP of Global Payments and Cash at Microsoft. Curtis embarked on his entrepreneurial path by founding Luxe, a premium valet and auto-concierge system, in 2013. After Luxe's successful acquisition to Volvo Group, Curtis returned to the entrepreneurial arena with the launch of Pinwheel, a fintech specializing in payroll API, in 2021. During this discussion, Curtis will share the intricacies of how he charted his entrepreneurial path, strategically navigating tech giants, startups, and investment firms, to fulfill his aspirations. Additionally, Curtis will impart how his firsthand founding experience has transformed him into a more emphatic investor, particularly for early-stage startups in their foundational phases. HPQ Silicon and its France-based affiliate, Novacium SAS have developed a low carbon, on demand, hydrogen production system that has completely re-imagined hydrogen production. Unlike traditional electrolysis-based hydrogen production systems, Novacium's process operates without the need for electricity, extensive storage and complex transportation infrastructure, making it a truly autonomous solution. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Deloitte Touche Study states that achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 will require the development of a clean hydrogen market equivalent to 170 million tonnes (MtH2eq) by 2030. However, as of 2021, less than 1 million tonnes (Mt) of hydrogen demand out of a total of 94 Mt came from low-emission sources, with the rest produced from unabated fossil fuels. UNLOCKING HYDROGEN POTENTIAL: A MULTI-PARTY COMMITMENT FOR INNOVATION In a strategic move that promises to reshape the landscape of eco-friendly energy solutions, HPQ Silicon Inc., NOVACIUM SAS and LN INNOV join forces with ARQUUS, to explore the integration of Novacium's revolutionary hydrogen production system into ARQUUS tactical and logistic vehicles. HYDROGEN WITHOUT LIMITS: NOVACIUMS'S GAME-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY As previously stated, Novacium's process doesn't rely on electricity, massive storage, or intricate transportation setups. The system produces hydrogen at industry-standard pressure levels (200 to 1,000 bars), eliminating bottlenecks in the conventional hydrogen production chain. ECO-FRIENDLY ALLOYS: THE KEY TO SAFE AND EFFICIENT HYDROGEN PRODUCTION Novacium's Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Jed Kraiem PhD, emphasizes their approach: "Unlocking hydrogen in water using eco-friendly and low-cost alloys provides a safe and efficient alternative for on-site energy. Our method ensures a low-carbon footprint, catering to the needs of both industrial and military applications." A DUAL-APPLICATION MARVEL: FROM MILITARY TO CIVILIAN USE Designed for military and civilian applications, Novacium's hydrogen production system meets ARQUUS' demand for a low-carbon, on-demand, high-pressure autonomous hydrogen source. Deployable globally, even off-grid, this system prioritizes safety without compromising efficiency. COMMERCIALIZATION MILESTONE: A CATALYST FOR NOVACIUM'S HYDROGEN MANUFACTURING Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of NOVACIUM SAS and HPQ Silicon Inc., "This multi-party commitment with ARQUUS marks the initial stride in commercializing Novacium's hydrogen manufacturing process. It has the potential to redefine hydrogen's role as a clean and safe on-site energy source in various industrial applications." FRANCE'S HYDROGEN RENAISSANCE: A STRATEGIC MOVE FOR ENERGY SOVEREIGNTY Mrs. Nathalie Mazeau, LN INNOV' CEO, highlights the broader implications of this partnership: "Hydrogen represents an opportunity for France and its armed forces. The energy transition strengthens economic prospects, enhances energy sovereignty, and rejuvenates our Armed Forces' technological capacity." A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN GREEN TECHNOLOGY As Novacium's hydrogen technology aligns with ARQUUS' commitment to innovation, the signing of this multi-party commitment marks a pivotal moment in the commercialization of a revolutionary hydrogen manufacturing process. The future holds promise as these industry leaders embark on a journey to redefine clean energy solutions. Don't miss the exclusive interview with Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of NOVACIUM SAS and HPQ Silicon Inc.

“The rescue services need to know that the vehicle is safe to approach… with this app, we have a 3D view of each truck and this augmented reality view.”With many governments making commitments toward zero-emission targets, more and more of the trucks on our roads are becoming electric. Whilst good news for the environment, it can present challenges for emergency responders, who may not be familiar with how these types of trucks are built. In the event of an accident, emergency services need to be able to access vehicles safely, and potentially, rescue people trapped inside. This means knowing things like where the battery is, where high-voltage cables are or which parts of the truck can be safely cut through. Volvo Group is the market leader in the manufacture of electric trucks in Europe, and as has been the case for decades, they're improving safety through clever innovation. They've developed an app for use at the scene of an emergency which guides those on the scene around the important components of the truck using 3D images as well as augmented reality. This means that first responders simply need to type the licence plate of the truck into the app and look at it through their device, and they can see information about the important components and potential hazards overlaid on the image. Our producer Lasse Edfast travelled to Volvo Group's HQ in Gothenburg, Sweden to meet Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director, and Vincent Barnoux, AR Expert & Business Solution Engineer at Volvo. They demonstrate the app for us on one of their trucks and talk about the benefits of using this kind of technology to safely guide users around electric vehicles. Nils Jaeger, President, Volvo Autonomous Solutions, Volvo Group joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss Volvo Autonomous Solutions commercialization strategy. The conversation begins with Nils discussing how the Volvo Group is approaching autonomy. It's about leveraging autonomous tech for productivity gains, for efficiency gains. – Nils JaegerVolvo Autonomous Solutions is operating in the quarry and mining, ports and logistics and hub-to-hub sectors. These sectors were chosen as they compliment each other and are viewed as long-term growth markets. As a stand-alone business area inside of Volvo Group, Volvo Autonomous Solutions has full development responsibility and are responsible for the commercialization of Volvo Group's autonomous solutions. Being structured this way, means Volvo Autonomous Solutions has full P&L responsibility. With P&L responsibility, Nils and the team at Volvo Autonomous Solutions are focused on building a business. For us it's not just the technology, it's building a business. Building a business is really the core reason why Volvo Autonomous Solutions was created. Having a clear focus on commercialization and having an attractive business model. – Nils JaegerThe commercial business model for Volvo Autonomous Solutions is not a one-size fits all model. It's a model that is tailored to each one of the sectors where they operate. In the Dallas Fort-Worth region, Volvo Autonomous Solutions will be operating a hub-to-hub autonomous transport solution as a service. Commercializing the hub-to-hub autonomous transport business will require partnerships. As part of the initial roll-out, Volvo Autonomous Solutions has partnered with DHL and Uber Freight. To prepare for autonomous operations, Volvo has begun hauling freight manually in the Texas Triangle. We have actually started this year to pull loads manually for both DHL and Uber Freight. We are putting in place all of the procedures, the processes which are needed to develop this new transportation value chain and to do this of-course in a safe and reliable form. – Nils JaegerFrom a truck asset perspective, Volvo Group is going to own the autonomous trucks on their balance sheet as the service begins commercialization. In these early days there will not be a minimum amount of volume needed to tap into the service, however the volume will have to make economic sense. Wrapping up the conversation, Nils discusses the driver-out fully autonomous operations at the Brönnöy Kalk mine in Velfjord, Norway.Chapters:0:00 The Road to Autonomy Index0:56 The Road to Autonomy Introduction 1:23 Volvo Group's Approach to Autonomy 7:14 Volvo Autonomous Solutions Commercial Business Model17:33 Volvo Autonomous Solutions Terminal (Hub) Strategy21:16 Autonomous Truck Assets & Virtual Driver Strategy24:22 Economics of Volvo Autonomous Solutions Transport as a Service Model 27:57 Volvo Autonomous Solutions Quarry & Mining Business 35:20 The Future of Autonomy Recorded on Thursday, August 22, 2023--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles and logistics.
