He was one of the founders of the modern gay literature movement, particularly through his involvement with the literary salon the Violet Quill. He explains how Violet Quill came to be, and why he decided to co-found this literary society with six other gay writers in New York City, including Andrew Holleran and Edmund White. Their goal? To meet and give each other creative feedback at a time when gay literature wasn't being taken seriously at all. During his time in Greenwich Village's gay literary scene, Felice explains that he met many notable authors like Frank O'Hara, Allen Ginsberg, and yes even Truman Capote. In 1977, he founded Sea Horse Press, the country's first gay-oriented publishing house, and in 1981, he became editor-in-chief of The Gay Presses of New York. He continues to teach and write, and one day hopes that Hollywood matures enough to adapt more queer literature into films. This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Jen Rainin and Rivkah Beth Medow, co-directors of the critically-acclaimed documentary Ahead of the Curve which chronicles the career of lesbian-rights icon Franco Stevens who launched Curve, the best-selling lesbian magazine ever published. Against the hostile backdrop of hate crimes and family rejection in the 1990s, with few celebrities or politicians willing to be out publicly, Curve magazine dared to celebrate a full, inclusive range of lesbians, queer women, and nonbinary people, seeding some of the most pressing conversations around LGBTQ+ community today. Growing up, Franco never saw any representation of queer women — she didn't even know it was possible for a woman to be gay. When she realized she was a lesbian, it changed the course of her life. In 1990, Franco created a safe place for lesbians in the form of Curve magazine. Her approach to threats and erasure in the ‘90s was to highlight all kinds of LGBTQ+ women and make them beautifully visible. The magazine helped build the foundation for the movements being led by today's queer activists. In this episode host Michael Shields, Jen Rainin, and Rivkah Beth Medow dig deeply into what the existence of Curve magazine meant to lesbians and the lesbian community while marveling about the obstacles and adversities Franco Stevens navigated bringing Curve to life. They discuss the controversy and complexities surrounding the word “lesbian,” a dispute concerning the name of the magazine which almost brought the publication down, the important work of The Curve Foundation, and, ultimate, they celebrate the profoundly inspiring legacy of Franco Stevens and the magazine she created which meant so much to countless people. In this Brand Story episode, hosts Marco Ciappelli and Sean Martin engage in a thought-provoking conversation with Ben Fitzpatrick from Cymulate. The discussion explores the innovative approaches to cybersecurity that can help regions advance beyond their current situation.Fitzpatrick shares his insights on the lifecycle of security and technology, emphasizing the critical role of continuous monitoring and understanding the attack path for staying ahead of potential threats. He elaborates on Cymulate's use of cutting-edge tools and methods like automation, AI, and TTP to simulate high-level intrusion attacks without causing damage, providing a non-disruptive method for businesses to validate their security controls. An important aspect of the conversation revolves around risk prioritization. Fitzpatrick expresses the necessity for businesses, particularly CISOs, to conduct regular—even continuous—testing of all components of their infrastructure and applications. This approach allows for a comprehensive understanding of potential risks and the ability to prioritize their mitigation.Fitzpatrick also digs into the concept of response. He asserts that many companies are only at the cusp of realizing its significance in their cybersecurity strategy. Those of you who have watched or listened to Winfluence for a while know that I got my professional start in radio. I marched myself into the local radio station at 14-years-old and said, “I wanna be a deejay!” And for some reason they said, “Okay. You start Friday.” I pursued radio through high school and college, navigated the world of broadcasting and sports hoping to one day land at ESPN. I actually interviewed there the same week I interviewed for its parent company, ABC. My first full-time job out of college wound up as a producer at ABC Radio Sports in New York. My experiences included working on a nationally syndicated radio show, managing stringers and reporters for day-to-day sports coverage, producing longer-form feature pieces you could argue were essentially podcasts. But this was well before most people had access to the Internet and devices, bandwidth and such were affordable. Or even possible.  We talk about influence on this show and radio is one of those mediums that we're quick to overlook. My mother developed a nationally recognized, award-winning communications program a few years back in my small hometown in Eastern Kentucky. It wound up being a success because she knew what most of us don't know. In a rural community, the local morning show deejay is probably the most influential person in town outside of the county judge.  Tony Garcia knows the power of radio. Like me, he worked in the broadcasting industry back in the 1990s. He is the co-founder of a company called Now! Media. You may not recognize that company. But the other “company” he co-founded in conjunction with it is the Bob and Sheri Show. It is a nationally syndicated radio show hosted by Bob Lacey and Sheri Lynch. They're based in Charlotte, but are syndicated on 70 affiliates across the U.S. The weekday morning show is also heard in 177 countries and on 150 ships at sea along the American Forces Network.  Now, a traditional, terrestrial radio show isn't something you'd think would flourish in our on-demand, always connected, internet world. But the Bob and Sheri Show is different. Not only have they spun the show and segments of it into podcasts and an active social media presence that includes a Facebook Group number over 115,000 members. But they have hacked the advertising and sponsorship model for even small businesses.  When I learned that, I knew we had to have Tony on the show. Because what they've built is a hidden gem of influence, both online and off. And we can learn from them. This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai. We are helping brands transform their digital marketing with user-generated content videos and images at scale. Come see us at CIPIO.ai. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12   https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Frank Slootman is the CEO at Snowflake. Frank has over 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur and executive in the enterprise software industry. Frank served as CEO of ServiceNow from 2011 to 2017, taking the organization from $100M in revenue, through an IPO, to $1.4B. Prior to that, Frank served as President at EMC following an acquisition of Data Domain Corporation, where he served as the CEO, leading the company through an IPO to its acquisition by EMC for $2.4B. He's also the best-selling author of Amp It Up. Notes: Frank's work ethic was developed as a child in the Netherlands. In his teens, he had summer jobs harvesting tulip bulbs and walking behind a tractor ten hours a day. He also cleaned factory toilets one summer in the plant where his dad worked. “The Man In The Arena” Theodore Roosevelt – Frank put this at the beginning of Amp It Up.  After retiring from ServiceNow in 2017, Frank had no intention of taking another CEO role, but people like him “have a hard time leaving the arena.” It's exciting to be back in a CEO role with Snowflake. Hiring -- “Hire people ahead of their own curve.” Hire more for aptitude than experience and give people the career opportunity of a lifetime. NO MBO -- “Another source of misalignment is management by objective (MBO). Which I have eliminated at every company I've joined in the last 20 years.” Push the pace -- Leaders set the pace. “Instead of getting back to me in a week, I asked, “Why not tomorrow?” Change the cadence. Push the pace. The leadership "must-have" qualities: A need to prove something Unbalanced They want to show the world something... They have passion High trust Need some ego, but it has to be in check Legacy? "I don't think about legacy much. When you're dead, you're dead." Frank's leadership team: We are not balanced, we are available to each other 24/7. Drivers vs. Passengers -- “Passengers are people who don't mind simply being carried along by the company's momentum …They are often pleasant, get along with everyone, attend meetings promptly, and generally do not stand out as troublemakers … While passengers can often diagnose and articulate a problem quite well, they have no investment in solving it.” Frank wants front-seat drivers who'll take ownership, make trouble, and help navigate. Raise Your Standards -- Push for insanely great. A leader must always push the standard higher. Focus -- “Founders don't have a mindset around operating companies. Focus is one of our number one things. You need to learn to have extreme, machine focus, and most people don't even know the beginning of what that means. They think they do, and they don't.” “I'm more of a Patton than an Eisenhower,” he says, known for constantly driving the troops forward. Sequoia's Carl Eschenbach remembers, “When we brought Frank into Snowflake, at our first board meeting he said, ‘Let me tell you how I'm running the board meetings and how you're going to participate. We're going to keep this very simple. I'm not even gonna tell you anything about the good stuff that's happening because you already know that—I'm going to dive into the shit that's broken and how we're going to fix it.'” Very Brief Retirement -- In 2017, Frank spent time regatta sailing, winning the iconic ocean race, Transpac. Race from Los Angeles to Oahu. (To win, “We focused on recruiting talent”). Put The Success of The Company Ahead of Your Own – If you want to build a Snowflake-sized company,  you can't be about the celeb-CEO lifestyle. “That's not real life. Real life is you're terrorized and uncomfortable every day of the week. People always ask me, ‘Is this normal?' I'm like, yep.” Snowflake - Hit the ground running on April 26, 2019.  Good news: They were on already on a tear. The bad news: “The company was quite impressed with itself.” Growth in all areas (revenue, retention rate, total customers, $1m Customers, Forbes Global 2000 Customers, Customer Satisfaction). The first 90 days as a new leader. It's a combat zone. You must quickly assess what's working, and what's not. Who should stay on the bus, and who should get off?

Today, we go through some of the news of the day through the prism of one theme: The GOP is always too little, too late. Republicans claim to have shut down the emergency declaration, but meanwhile, Biden is already pushing Warp Speed 2.0 before the GOP is willing to even fight the first vaccine genocide. Republicans are finally discussing the border now that their solutions would no longer work. Likewise, they are finally dealing with the trans issue, but only regarding female sports. Also, they spent years promoting domestic surveillance. Now the FBI and Homeland Security are sowing disquiet among Americans to foment chaos and further facilitate centralized authority. We already are China but don't even realize it. Finally, we're joined by Brad Geyer, a former DOJ attorney representing hundreds of people whose loved ones were killed by remdesivir. One of his lawyers just succeeded in advancing an anti-fraud suit against a California hospital for the use of remdesivir, which led to the death of a patient.
