In this electrifying episode of Jack Dappa Blues, we sit down with the powerhouse that is Honeychild Coleman—a pioneering force in the world of punk, blues, and avant-garde music. A Louisville native and Brooklyn-based artist, Honeychild's journey has taken her from busking in the New York subway to collaborating with legends like The Slits, Mad Professor, and Greg Tate's Burnt Sugar Arkestra. As the frontwoman of blues-punk outfit The 1865, Coleman fuses raw energy with historical narratives, crafting sonic landscapes that echo the struggles and triumphs of Black American culture. Her music has graced films, documentaries, and television screens, all while staying true to her ethos of artistic resistance and community empowerment. In this candid conversation, Honeychild delves into the intersection of punk, blues, and Black identity, sharing how her lived experiences and sociocultural activism inform her art. From her early days in the underground NYC music scene to shaping spaces like Sistagrrl Riots, she continues to be a trailblazer for alternative Black voices in music.Join us as we explore the roots of rebellion, the power of storytelling through sound, and the unapologetic spirit of punk blues. My Songs“  (Dir. Schyda Vasseghi, GERMANY), the MAKERS storytelling platform for trailblazing women (USA), "Fireflies" and "Getting My Name Up There" (Katarina Cibulka, AUSTRIA), Rock Chicks:I Am Not Female To You (Marita Stocker, GERMANY), and upcoming “Rude Girls” (Brigid Maher, USA). The moment I met this week's guest, Ingrid Hu Dahl, I knew we'd create something beautiful together. She was working on a memoir about identity, loss, and living her truth, and needed a coach to walk the author journey with her. Spoiler: it was me. Her beautifully written book comes out next year. In this episode, we discuss her story growing up mixed-race, including her rock background and current work as the founder and CEO of her coaching and consulting business, specializing in leadership and inclusion, and life transitions. She also shares about her author journey and how she navigated sharing a highly personal story alongside her work as a leadership coach and speaker. And we talk about owning the stage, including some practical tips to show up as your authentic self in front of hundreds of people. Ingrid's career journey includes leadership roles at Meta, Gap Inc, Capital One, KQED, and several nonprofit organizations. She is a TEDx speaker; a founding member of the Willie Mae Rock Camp for girls in Brooklyn, NYC; has performed in multiple touring bands; and has written, filmed, and directed two short films on identity and mixed-race experiences. Her memoir, Sun Shining on the Morning Snow, will be published in May 2025 by Page Two Publishing. This week my guest is Emmet Moeller. Emmet and I sat down in February and talked about non-profits, music, politicizing work, and just how good farm fresh produce is. You can find more about Emmet and his work at Common Table here or join their substack here. If you live in NYC or the greater Kingston area, check out their full fridge club and other offerings and events :) More about Emmet: Emmet Moeller is a queer & trans chef living and working in NY's Hudson Valley. After 13 years of loving and learning in Brooklyn, Emmet and his partner moved north to Rosendale, where they have happily lived for just over 6 years. In a past life, Emmet worked for Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, where he met a lot of incredible musicians who taught him so much about leadership and care. These days, you can find him leading a small team of queer geniuses at Common Table, his personal chef and meal subscription business (and generally queer little kitchen where we do whatever we want) in Kingston, NY.  Outside of work, Emmet has lately centered his attention on resistance, pushing and pulling, moving his body now that he can finally feel it, staring at the waterfall in his backyard, and eating as many delicious things as possible.  To join my substack, click here. This week's conversation is with LaFrae Sci, a friend, colleague, and superstar in my Impact Accelerator! LaFrae is an accomplished musician, imaginationist, and Executive Director at Willie Mae Rock Camp, where she created the innovative and transformational Willie Mae Future Sounds STEAM-based curriculum.I've been excited to talk with LaFrae on the podcast for a number of reasons. First, I think that her story of stepping into the ED role at Willie Mae at a time of flux and stewarding the organization's growth through a pandemic is instructive and inspirational for other leaders. As I reference in our conversation, the org has grown in budget and impact in the under 2 years that she's been at the helm, and I've wanted to shine a light on her journey and experience as part of a broader dialog opening up and creating transparency about what leadership looks like in practice. The second reason I've been excited to talk to LaFrae is more personal. She and I vibe out via email and on some of our coaching calls, about the role that having intentional abundance and gratitude practices have played in our lives. She leads from a place of abundance and gratitude, and I've wanted for a long time to invite her to share what that means in practice, and how those practices have helped her stay grounded and avoid overwhelm during the craziness of these past years. Finally, I just love shedding light on incredible leaders as part of this podcast, and LaFrae is an incredible leader.  This is a great conversation, I hope you enjoy!

Disclosure,  WDEK Ep. 18 does not cover the Government Shutdown, Miley Cyrus or twerking.   Shonali and Christian question the intentions behind gift giving. Christian is impressed by Shonali's first official home office chair with movable arm rests and lumbar support.  Shonali is screening her short film Sardines Out of A Can in NYC on Oct. 24th at Wythe Hotel.  Christian had a role on Guiding Light, better than that, he auditioned for All My Children via a self taped video and we have the proof.  The next generation of techies are gamers.   Kids today can sneak on to planes, steal SUVs and hack phones and tablets.  The empathy sucker - smartphones as per Louis CK and Christian.  Our special guest is a former Apple technician, teacher, writer, musician and DJ extraordinaire Rashida White.  Rashida and Shonali met as volunteers at Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. Have you tried Alchemy Vegan Ice Cream.  Shonali tried to make a video letter for Bloomberg.  Our song of the episode is Lazy Soldier by Sam Jayne (Love As Laughter).
