In 2020, our guest this week was named an Artist in Residence at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). Thus we are finally able to continue the theme established on episode 84 with Matthew Dear, a line of enquiry which I know many of you were keen to see more fully interrogated on the podcast.Daedelus has been making music since the 90s, releasing albums (on labels including Brainfeeder and Ninja Tune) almost every year this century, and performing with such virtuosity that they are now a professor of electronic music performance at Berklee's Electronic Production and Design Department. So we had much to discuss during this conversation, including the nature of extra terrestrial communication, government efforts to support the creativity, intellectual property and sampling, the making of albums, and the views and expectations of the new generation of musicians. This is a good one...If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features the show without ads, regular bonus podcasts, and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. You can also make a one-off donation to the podcast using a card, with Paypal, or your Ethereum wallet! Head over to scubaofficial.io/support.Plus there's also a private area for Patreon supporters in the Hotflush Discord Server... but anyone can join the conversation in the public channels.Listen to the music discussed on the show via the Not A Diving Podcast Spotify playlistFollow Scuba: twitter instagram bandcamp spotify apple music beatport Hosted on Acast. So it's come to this... A Dad Bod Rap Pod mailbag episode. We are celebrating our 300th episode by fielding questions from some people we respect. Show hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are extremely grateful to have met and interacted with so many talented and cool people over the past few years and we reached out to a few of them to send in some open-ended questions about hip-hop music and culture. Underground rap luminaries such as rappers Open Mike Eagle, Illogic, Rob Sonic, and Fat Tony, as well as producers Blockhead, Roper Williams, Cutso, and Maker, as well as comedian and top tier podcast guest across genres Josh Gondelman provided some funny, insightful and in some cases rather odd opportunities for us to bring you the nuanced rap discussion we have been working on for the last few hundred recording sessions. For this special episode we are also layering in some extremely humbling voice messages from a colorful cast of characters who were kind enough to call in and tell us what they like about the show. We were blown away to receive entries from such great artists as Daedelus, Murs, and Tajai from Souls of Mischief, among others. We would like to thank everyone who has ever listened to this program, everyone who's ever told a friend about us, everyone that's ever written us a check, all of the folks behind the scenes who help us out every week, all of the people who gave us advice over the years, especially in the beginning, and all of our past contributors, whether they were interview subjects, contributed music, or just interacted with us online. This has been one hell of a ride and we are very grateful to hip-hop itself, especially the underground scene that birthed us and has taught us so much about life and provided us with so many great opportunities. We love making this show and contributing in a small way to the culture that we have been obsessed with our entire lives. It's an honor and a privilege to get these takes off and to examine this amazing music, and while we're not planning on stopping anytime soon, we are in a reflective mood since we reached a round number in the episode run. Huge shouts out to Cutso and DEM ONE for our theme song, Taylor Weng for the audio adjustments, OME and the entire Stony Island massive for providing us a home. We hope you enjoy this week's episode. So, if you're working on a mix, get ready to take in some gems.As always, the conversation found its own way to some other interesting areas and topics to help you re-think how you're working and where you may be able to experiment. If you haven't already, go back and listen to Part 1 with Nothing_Neue to take in more of his experience and insights. I assure you, there are many. If you've already heard Part 1 with Nothing_Neue, I highly recommend listening to a previous episode you may have missed.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. CONNECT THE LONG-TERM AND THE DAY-TO-DAY.Adopting a long-term view and patience in how you build a project or career by definition creates a large project. Break apart the long-term view into actionable steps that can be taken today, at a pace that can be maintained indefinitely.2. YOU CAN SEE LESS THAN YOU CAN'T.Give yourself and others the benefit of the doubt. There are an infinite number of things happening in the lives of others that are not visible to you.3. BE AN ACTIVE AND GENEROUS MEMBER OF YOUR COMMUNITYHow can you share what it is you see to help others? Welcome to part one, of this two part episode with Nothing_Neue.Today's guest is Nothing_Neue, a Brooklyn born Producer/Beatmaker, and Artist, focused on creating worlds out of music. In 2023, he was signed to the Los Angeles-based, Alpha Pup Records, which as been considered a top-tier indie label for years, releasing projects from a wide variety of artists, including: Mike Gao, Nosaj Thing, Free The Robots, Dibia$e, Jonwayne, and Daedelus. In the first part of this two part episode, we talk about:Nothing_Neue's signing to AlphaPup and its impact on his life as an artist.Learning to embrace and trust your own judgment.Internal and external encouragement and its role in pursuing goals. How Nothing_Neue processes feedback that doesn't line up with his own feelings about his work. How Nothing_Neue applies an entrepreneurial mindset to his art.Embracing longevity as a strategy in an era of instant feedback and gratification. How achievement of a big goal can bring about sadness. And, Nothing_Neue brings a few songs for us to listen to and discuss. As always, this was a lot of fun and provides insight and context into Nothing_Neue's musical perspective.Top 3 Gems From This Convo:1. ACHIEVING A BIG GOAL CAN BRING ABOUT SADNESS.Do not make the mistake of thinking that achieiving that big goal (e.g. getting signed to a label) will solve the problems in your life. Be thoughtful and intentional about the way you set expectations and goals for yourself.2. OPERATE FROM A PLACE OF TRUTHYou don't have to take part in business to make music, but if you want to participate in the music business, you will have to figure out how to make this work for you in a way that matches your prinicples. If you feel like making money from your music requires a fundamental compromise of your values, do not do it. You can earn money in many other ways.3. LONGEVITY AS A PRIORITYIf your goals are to build a durable and lasting career, ensure that the way you work and build are aligned accordingly. It will take practice, but learn to say no to the short-term and surface level wins that are not harmonious with your goals.Listen on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.Tap in with toru:Substack: Instagram: @torubeattiktok: @torubeatTap in with Nothing_Neue:Instagram: @nothing_neueTo jump to a specific moment in the conversation:0:00 Intro 2:04 Welcome 2:38 Listening Session, Track 1 6:44 Discussion, Track 1 9:08 Listening Session, Track 2 13:09 Discussion, Track 2 17:06 Listening Session, Track 3 20:18 Discussion, Track 3 24:50 Alpha Pup signing 27:50 Double Down On You 31:40 Encouragement 33:50 How to take outside feedback and opinion 37:00 People pleasing 37:30 Entrepreneurial Mindset As An Artist 41:00 Longevity As A Priority 43:25 Sensitivity Around Money And Art 45:00 Don't Infringe On Your Truth 46:26 Transparency 48:00 Reaching A Big Goal Can Bring About Sadness 50:44 OutroReferenced:Yoofee - I KnowShowbiz & A.G. - All OutFlying Lotus - Massage SituationDesigner Signed by KanyeThanks for reading toru's Substack! In which Sean and Andy finally start getting mercenary and talk shit behind the paywall. This week we tackle the blinkered stupidity of last week's 'Starbucks baristas are bourgeois' discourse. Is there even a crumb of meaning that we can glean from this meltdown? Anyways, we had fun with it. Tread Perilously's summer Grab Bag month continues with its first look back at Space: Above and Beyond -- an episode called "Level of Necessity." When an operation on planet Daedelus ends with heavy casualties, Lt. Colonel McQueen notes Damphousse's "anomalous intuition" for saving the 58th Squadron. The notation in his mission report attracts the attention of Colonel Matthew Burke, chief of the largely-discredited Psy-Ops department. He's convinced Damphousse's intuition is the proof of precognitive abilities he's been looking for and arranges for the squad to return to Daedelus for a hit-and-run mission. Will putting the grunt in danger unlock the secret powers of her mind? And will anyone survive their fifth trip to the alien-controlled world? Erik and Justin can't get over the episode's notion that lovable character actor Richard Kind can play a heavy. The pair also recall the monthly Comic Book & Science-Fiction Convention at the Shrine Auditorium. Erik's doppelganger ends up part of the discussion. The cast of Space: Above and Beyond prove to be knock-offs, off-brands, and potentially the greatest problem with the series as a whole. Erik and Justin attempt to recast Colonel Matthew Burke. Dan O'Bannon makes another unexpected appearance and Giovanni Ribisi becomes a psychic friend.

QRTR is an electronic music producer and DJ based in Brooklyn, NY. With a reverence for house music, QRTR fuses air-tight dance hooks with dreamy downtempo textures. Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Daedelus, Booka Shade, and Tiga, to name a few. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges. Though her original tracks do not place within a specific genre, DJ Mag describes QRTR's music as a meeting between “art house film composer and basement rave.” QRTR's sophomore album, infina ad nausea, released on LA-based record label Dome of Doom is a treasure trove of hypnotic grooves that vortex around the many intricacies of her experimental approach and leave a testament to her growth as an artist. Dubbed as an "euphoric trip through the mind" by Pitchfork, the album has also received support from BBC Radio 6's Tom Ravenscroft, The Wire Magazine (UK), Paste Magazine, XLR8R, Bandcamp Daily and more. Extensive years working in the film world has shaped her music sonically and conceptually, adding a tonality and design to her works that is rare in dance music.
