Is happiness a skill you can develop? Or is it a place you find yourself, if you're lucky? Today's podcast is a bonus episode that I've recorded, from me to you, to demonstrate that yes, happiness is about more than just chance. These special Boxing Day podcasts are becoming a bit of a tradition now (look out for one I'll be releasing on New Year's Day too). And in this one, I share five powerful ideas with you – five happiness habits that can transform your life in meaningful ways. They're all explored in much greater detail in my book Happy Mind Happy Life: 10 Simple Ways to Feel Great Every Day, which is being re-published in the UK in an exciting new format on 1 January 2026. But you can leverage your happiness levels right away by listening today. Here's a quick overview of what you'll learn: 1. Happiness is a Skill - Discover the difference between ‘junk happiness' and ‘core happiness' to feel more content, in control, and aligned with your values. 2. Define Success for Yourself - Imagine yourself on your deathbed and identify three things you'll wish you had done. What can you do now to move toward that ending? 3. Eliminate Choice - We make thousands of decisions a day, and each one drains mental energy. By creating routines and reducing choice, you can reduce that stress. 4. Make Time Stand Still - Identify ‘flow state' activities that make you lose track of time, and schedule them as investments in your happiness. 5. Seek Out Friction - If someone upsets you, ask yourself why their words affected you so much. Rewriting their story with compassion will increase your own sense of control. I hope this episode helps you and your family cultivate lasting happiness in 2026 and beyond. I explore all these ideas and many more in my newly formatted book Happy Mind Happy Life - available here as a paperback or as an audiobook, which I am narrating. After years of trying to follow the industry's push to “scale,” I realized I didn't actually want a scalable offer. What I truly wanted was impact, freedom, and a business built on my terms. Let's dive into why becoming a true business genius starts with defining success for yourself—not based on what coaches, consultants, or the online space say you “should” want. The question we ask and answer in this episode is “what does success look like” on a college campus? Some may think that success is getting a 4.0 GPA or landing the “right” job when you graduate…but there's more…much more to God's design for your student. Listen and learn in this great final conversation with Parker and Abbi.

The CoCreate Work Podcast | Work. Culture. Personal Development.

This episode is for anyone staring down the end of the year wondering if they "succeeded"—comparing themselves to external markers, measuring their worth by what didn't happen, or feeling behind despite doing the work. We explore how to define success on your own terms, celebrate what actually matters, and set yourself up for meaningful progress ahead. The Big QuestionHow do I define success as I reflect on the past year and plan for the next? What We CoverGround yourself in your actual goals – Compare yourself to what you originally set out to do, not what others achieved or external markers say you should have done.Account for pivots – Document when your plans changed. Those adjustments often represent good leadership, not failure.Balance input and output goals – Focus on what you control (inputs like sending weekly newsletters) alongside desired outcomes (outputs like business growth). Input goals give you agency and realistic measures of success.Get specific with your vision – "Getting a job" isn't enough. Define the job you want, at the company you want, doing work you want to do.Give yourself grace – Sometimes success is showing up through a hard year. No one else knows the battles you fought.Key TakeawaySuccess isn't just about hitting January's goals. It's about acknowledging what shifted, celebrating the inputs you controlled, and defining what matters to you—not what external markers say should matter.Resources MentionedRuchika Malhotra, Uncompete: Rejecting Competition to Unlock SuccessResources:Navigating a big transition? What’s one thing you wish you learned earlier in life? What do you think would’ve changed for you if you learned it sooner? Today, Jay reflects on the lessons he wishes he’d learned in his twenties and thirties, wisdom shaped by mistakes, growth, and years of inner work. He opens up about how easy it is to get swept up in chasing outcomes or living for other people’s expectations, and how those patterns can quietly pull us away from our true path. Jay also explains why success and happiness are completely different skill sets, and how understanding that early on can save you years of unnecessary frustration. Jay also talks honestly about what healing really feels like, the side no one prepares you for. He explains that growth doesn’t always look inspiring; sometimes it shows up as exhaustion, confusion, or feeling like everything is falling apart. But that discomfort is often just old patterns breaking down so new ones can take shape. Through empathy, personal stories, and practical insights, Jay walks us through the “decade of firsts,” from first jobs to first heartbreaks, and reminds us that feeling lost isn’t failure. It’s a natural part of becoming someone stronger, clearer, and more aligned with who you’re meant to be. In this episode, you'll learn: How to Hear Your Inner Voice Again How to Define Success on Your Own Terms How to Build Confidence Through Self-Trust How to Turn Rejection Into Insight How to Break Free From Others’ Expectations How to Heal Even When It Feels Messy You’re not behind, you’re growing at the pace your life is asking you to grow. If you're anything like us, your answer to the title question might sound something like "well it depends...in what area?" What if we're asking the wrong question altogether? Our culture constantly pushes us to measure success in terms of work accomplishments, financial milestones, or social recognition. It's tempting to think of our life as an aggregate GPA, where we might be failing in one area, but hey, at least we're doing okay over here! It can be easy to hope our financial wins give us extra husband points, or our promotion at work makes up for all those missed ballgames. This week, we dive into powerful conversations exploring why success might be the wrong goal—and why faithfulness is the true target. We get into some of our favorite definitions of success, such as, "when those who know you best respect you the most" (thanks Mark!) or "being in the process of achieving a God-honoring goal." We'll also examine some biblical wisdom from Joshua, Psalms, Proverbs, and elsewhere to redefine our idea of prospering and effectiveness. Forget compartmentalizing life into separate scorecards. This episode is your invitation to embrace contentment, pursue incremental progress, and anchor your plans firmly in faithfulness to God.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/   Join the Fatherhood Guard as a monthly donor: https://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/     Buy Kent's latest book: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon  Read the new State Of Biblical Fatherhood report here: http://manhoodjourney.org/sobf Find tools to share the report here: https://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools   Have a topic you want us to touch on? After a twenty-year career as a business leader, he embarked on biblical Fatherhood ministry projects. He's appeared on television, radio, web outlets and podcasts. He's spoken at parenting and men's events. He's authored four books. The first, Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You, was written to help men learn how to find mentors and wise counsel. The latest, Don't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to Quit, aims to help dads stay present in their roles as fathers and husbands even when they feel like giving up. Kent's life has been radically affected by godly mentors and his lovely wife, April. They have been married thirty years and have five sons and one daughter-in-law. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Lawson Brown is husband to his high school sweetheart, a father of two young adult daughters, has been a business leader since 1995, and is a former Marine. He served as a small group leader for teenage boys for many years, helped start the Christian media ministry City on a Hill Productions, then later Sanctuary – a new church in Kennesaw, GA – where he served as its leader for Men's Ministry. Lawson's journey of faith has always been centered in a grounding from his wife, Audrey, and supported throughout by many men whom he's found as brothers along the way. His family is nearing an empty nest phase and has recently relocated to the Florida Gulf Coast beaches area.

How much value we place on birthday wishes from friends? Do they actually matter, or is it the thought (or the public shoutout) that counts? From there, we dive into a new study revealing a generational shift in how success is defined: younger folks are prioritizing mental and physical health above wealth, status, or career, with relationships, personal growth, and flexibility ranking higher than ever before. We open up about how our priorities have shifted over time, and a common link is when our mental health wasn't in a good place, we knew we needed to make lifestyle changes and have better boundaries with work. What is with the American cultural obsession with upward mobility? We discuss a few examples of other countries where it seems like work/life balance is much healthier. This week's recommendations are Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Andrew), The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart (Laura), and Color Wow Dream Coat (Pam).  And in this week's installment of After Dark, we're inspired by that cheating CEO/HR director pair at the Coldplay concert to spill some juicy deets about cheating couples we've known who also told on themselves. From getting tagged during a night out after lying about working to backroom hookups caught on camera, we live for the tea. Social media has made it easier than ever to catch people in a lie, and we share personal stories (and a few laughs) about how the truth always seems to come out... sometimes thanks to LinkedIn, Snapchat, or a poorly timed tag. Outcomes matter, but they have to be understood within the context of your individual baby or toddler's unique needs and capabilities. I share some of my key success points with the families I work with – that sleep is easier, more restful, and that they navigate any changes with connection. I also want them to understand their baby's needs and feel more confident in their responsive approach.
