Matt and Erik discuss what can people expect to see on Saturday and how we'd view the game in a successful light, what position group has the most to prove for Oregon week one, if the Ducks won't truly know how good they are until Week five of this season, and then our thoughts on the Oregon offense and if they're getting away from the run game or not. If you're anything like us, your answer to the title question might sound something like "well it depends...in what area?" What if we're asking the wrong question altogether? Our culture constantly pushes us to measure success in terms of work accomplishments, financial milestones, or social recognition. It's tempting to think of our life as an aggregate GPA, where we might be failing in one area, but hey, at least we're doing okay over here! It can be easy to hope our financial wins give us extra husband points, or our promotion at work makes up for all those missed ballgames. This week, we dive into powerful conversations exploring why success might be the wrong goal—and why faithfulness is the true target. We get into some of our favorite definitions of success, such as, "when those who know you best respect you the most" (thanks Mark!) or "being in the process of achieving a God-honoring goal." We'll also examine some biblical wisdom from Joshua, Psalms, Proverbs, and elsewhere to redefine our idea of prospering and effectiveness. Forget compartmentalizing life into separate scorecards. This episode is your invitation to embrace contentment, pursue incremental progress, and anchor your plans firmly in faithfulness to God.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------   Support the show and upgrade your fatherhood swag. Shop Range Leather and get 15% OFF with code MJ15 Grab some fresh beans! https://rangecoffee.com/   Join the Fatherhood Guard as a monthly donor: https://manhoodjourney.org/donate/fatherhood-guard/     Buy Kent's latest book: Don't Bench Yourself on Amazon  Read the new State Of Biblical Fatherhood report here: http://manhoodjourney.org/sobf Find tools to share the report here: https://manhoodjourney.org/sobf-tools   Have a topic you want us to touch on? After a twenty-year career as a business leader, he embarked on biblical Fatherhood ministry projects. He's appeared on television, radio, web outlets and podcasts. He's spoken at parenting and men's events. He's authored four books. The first, Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You, was written to help men learn how to find mentors and wise counsel. The latest, Don't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to Quit, aims to help dads stay present in their roles as fathers and husbands even when they feel like giving up. Kent's life has been radically affected by godly mentors and his lovely wife, April. They have been married thirty years and have five sons and one daughter-in-law. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky. Lawson Brown is husband to his high school sweetheart, a father of two young adult daughters, has been a business leader since 1995, and is a former Marine. He served as a small group leader for teenage boys for many years, helped start the Christian media ministry City on a Hill Productions, then later Sanctuary – a new church in Kennesaw, GA – where he served as its leader for Men's Ministry. Lawson's journey of faith has always been centered in a grounding from his wife, Audrey, and supported throughout by many men whom he's found as brothers along the way. His family is nearing an empty nest phase and has recently relocated to the Florida Gulf Coast beaches area.

How much value we place on birthday wishes from friends? Do they actually matter, or is it the thought (or the public shoutout) that counts? From there, we dive into a new study revealing a generational shift in how success is defined: younger folks are prioritizing mental and physical health above wealth, status, or career, with relationships, personal growth, and flexibility ranking higher than ever before. We open up about how our priorities have shifted over time, and a common link is when our mental health wasn't in a good place, we knew we needed to make lifestyle changes and have better boundaries with work. What is with the American cultural obsession with upward mobility? We discuss a few examples of other countries where it seems like work/life balance is much healthier. This week's recommendations are Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Andrew), The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart (Laura), and Color Wow Dream Coat (Pam).  And in this week's installment of After Dark, we're inspired by that cheating CEO/HR director pair at the Coldplay concert to spill some juicy deets about cheating couples we've known who also told on themselves. From getting tagged during a night out after lying about working to backroom hookups caught on camera, we live for the tea. Social media has made it easier than ever to catch people in a lie, and we share personal stories (and a few laughs) about how the truth always seems to come out... sometimes thanks to LinkedIn, Snapchat, or a poorly timed tag. I share some of my key success points with the families I work with – that sleep is easier, more restful, and that they navigate any changes with connection. IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon concludes a four-part series on winning at triathlon in 2025, emphasizing the importance of defining success, embracing the journey, and adopting a high-flex integration mindset. He highlights key strategies such as choosing races that align with strengths and weaknesses, avoiding common pitfalls like under-fueling and over-reliance on FTP, and prioritizing sleep and consistent strength training. Dixon also shares insights from a Purple Patch athlete, Dave Pray, who emphasizes the broader impact of endurance sports on health and longevity. Dixon explains how Pray and his focus on cycling and participation in the Purple Patch program has fueled his success and performance in triathlon and life. He emphasizes the importance of a high VO2 max for longevity and health, and how his training and social life are intertwined.  Matt Dixon explains the importance of defining success and embracing the journey, emphasizing that athletes should not live to race but live through the process. Matt Dixon advises athletes to choose races that align with their strengths and weaknesses, rather than just selecting races based on location or convenience. He lists 10 common pitfalls that athletes make, starting with the check-the-box mindset and the obsession with outcomes. What is the Success Complex? It is what is stopping you! Listen to author Adrian Kelly talking about time, control and performance psychology.  Adrian's greatest gift to us all is his work as the author of The Success Complex. From his home country of Ireland, he shared the journey that led him to write this transformative book. By trade, Adrian is a lawyer, having spent many years as a criminal defense solicitor. But the financial crash in Ireland in 2010 prompted a deep reevaluation of his life. This reflection led him to pivot from law to renewable energy, where he worked alongside an entrepreneur to develop innovative wind and solar energy products. For nearly a decade, Adrian applied his skills to shaping sustainable solutions, only to discover that his true passion lay elsewhere. He transitioned into government work, helping businesses navigate imports and exports. Yet, it was in coaching—helping entrepreneurs and businesses operate more effectively—that Adrian found his most fulfilling calling. It was through this coaching work that Adrian's curiosity about success deepened. Over the course of four years, he researched and wrote The Success Complex, a book designed to probe the barriers that hold people back from truly achieving success. The title itself—The Success Complex—reflects Adrian's central thesis: success is often a paradox. Like a psychological complex that inhibits action, the pursuit of success can sometimes leave even the most accomplished individuals unfulfilled. “I found, working with many entrepreneurs and business people over a number of years, that even people who were materially successful—successful on the outside—didn't feel successful on the inside. They didn't feel fulfilled,” Adrian explained. “In many cases, these individuals lacked something truly precious: time. Time to spend with family. Time to control their own lives. Often, their businesses ended up owning them rather than the other way around.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

There were no gatherings this Sunday, but here is Adam's message for the new year. How do we define success? Why is it difficult to find a person in the Bible whose "success" looked anything like what we define success as today? Adam discusses how if left to our own devices, we typically attach the idea of our being faithful to God as deserving success or recognition. How might God be inviting us to faithfulness even if the outcomes aren't what we had planned for our lives?

And let's be real; titles, money, or relationships alone will never feel like “enough.” So, let's break it down and figure out how to make sure you THRIVE in '25 -  and how you'll really know when you've made it. Define Success, Your Way Stop measuring success with other people's rulers. Ask yourself: What does success look like for you right now? Try a Vision Sketch Grab paper and sketch out your dream life—down to the details. Bonus: Send me your sketches! Write It Down Thinking isn't enough. Get clear, write them down, and live them. Cut the Toxic Ties You can't thrive with toxic people in your life. Make the hard choices. Create a Joy List Schedule joy like you schedule work. Prioritize what makes you happy. Forgive (And Let Go)Forgiveness is for YOU. Release the energy they take but stay in control of who stays in your life.
