This episode questions the authenticity and health benefits of products such as scented candles with labels like “Palo Santo”. Pondering the use of synthetic fragrances and the lack of regulation in the fragrance industry, I question what we are actually inhaling when burning such candles. Broader issues of ethical sourcing and the environmental impact of ingredients like soy wax are considered as well as the importance of intention behind using products like candles and essential oils. Overall, advocating for mindfulness and awareness of what we breathe in and put on our bodies is paramount: why is it “buyer beware”? And what's the difference between a dead, soulless synthetic Palo Santo and the real Palo Santo, from which the essential oil is obtained from dead wood? The second part of the episode starts by exploring the relationship between cleanliness and scent. Which is an excuse to talk about Lavender, or Lavandula, derived from the Latin "Lavare," meaning to wash. This presented another excuse to talk about the various Lavenders to be aware of (again, buyer beware). Essential Oils: Country, Benefits, and Practice Arin and Josie discussed the differences between oils from various countries, specifically focusing on the use of essential oils and their therapeutic benefits. They clarified that aroma essential oils, particularly sweet gum, are not amber oils. Arin also highlighted the benefits of sweet gum oil such as boosting immunity, promoting relaxation, and improving skin health. The discussion also touched on the use of myrrh and wild orange oils. Arin suggested an anointing practice using all these oils. Sacred Oils and Feng Shui Practices Arin discussed the practice of anointing oneself with sacred oils as a way to feel more holy and whole. The oils were to be applied to the third eye, or pineal gland, and the heart. Arin also highlighted the significance of wild orange in Feng Shui practices for symbolizing abundance and prosperity. He suggested creating an abundance blend using wild orange, frankincense, geranium, and cinnamon oils, which could be used for anointing oneself or one's wallet to attract more abundance. Frankincense and Myrrh: Synergistic Benefits and Symbolic Representation Josie highlighted the synergistic benefits of using frankincense and myrrh together, particularly in relation to their effect on brain chemistry and neurotransmitters. She also discussed the symbolic representation of these oils as embodying both vertical and horizontal forces, and their ability to bring about alignment, which is beneficial for cells, including those affected by cancer. Arin and Ariana contributed their personal experiences with these oils, sharing their preferred blends and their appreciation for the protective qualities of the frankincense, wild orange, and Roman camomile combination. Essential Oils Holiday Emotions Gathering Arin invited everyone to a special holiday offering, a virtual gathering every Wednesday in December at 5 PM, where she would teach how to use essential oils to manage holiday emotions. She also encouraged attendees to invite their customers and others interested in essential oils. The indigenous Bundjalung people of eastern Australia have long used Tea Tree as a traditional medicine for many years in a variety of ways, including inhaling the oil from the crushed leaves, rubbing leaves on their skin and brewing an infusion of the leaves to make a tea. Palo Santo wood is highly prized for its unique essential oil, which is only produced by the tree once it starts to die. The oil is extracted from the heartwood after the tree has fallen and been lying on the forest floor for several years. The tree's natural defence mechanism against insects and disease involves producing a resin rich in limonene, an insecticide and antifungal compound. As the tree dies, the resin concentrates in the heartwood, developing the aromatic properties of the oil. Extracting the oil through steam distillation is a time-consuming and labour-intensive process, adding to its value. Since Palo Santo trees are endangered, sourcing the oil sustainably and ethically is crucial. The essential oil is used for various purposes, such as insect repellent, respiratory health, calming nerves and spiritual practices like energy cleansing and connecting with spirit realms. There are many ways to utilise Palo Santo oil benefits for the body, head, heart and spirit, but the mainstay of this video is about the essential oil's benefits for spiritual and soul work. Antonio Morales is a licensed clinical social worker and the founder of The Liberated Self Therapeutic Services, LLC, a private practice dedicated to serving the mental health needs of Black and Brown folk, across communities. Our mission is “to disrupt and dismantle the psychological chaos and confusion of white supremacy, as we facilitate a transformative healing process that will allow Black and Brown folk to transcend the adverse impact of our current and historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma.” Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Antonio identifies as a mixed race Afro Boricua and honors his indigenous African and Taino ancestors through his work, while grappling with the dilemma of knowing that European blood runs through his veins. As a product of the European colonization of the Western Hemisphere, Antonio understands the importance of addressing the historical, intergenerational, complex racial trauma that exists within him, as well as the communities he serves. Antonio believes that healing from and transcending the adverse impact of white supremacy is, by default, revolutionary. Chef Santiago Gomez of Palo Santo in Atlanta joins host Jennifer Zyman. Gomez is. Mexico City native who worked at Nobu in Mexico and Miami. After 10 years in Miami, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and co-created Botanico Hospitality Group. In 2022 he opened Palo Santo, a supper club-style restaurant and rooftop influenced by Mexican modern cuisine and Georgia ingredients.
